Applying Mathematical Modeling To The Study Of Family Systems, Dahlia Maxwell Apr 2024

Applying Mathematical Modeling To The Study Of Family Systems, Dahlia Maxwell

Theses and Dissertations

Mathematical modeling provides a powerful framework for insight into current scientific theories as well as hypothesis generation for further research. Despite its undeniable potential to enrich scientific advancement, the application of mathematical modeling remains conspicuously scarce in the field of family science. The complexity inherent in family dynamics, coupled with the intricate interplay of emotions in the individual, underscores the necessity of a robust analytical approach. Addressing this critical gap in the literature, this thesis introduces a sophisticated mathematical model of family dynamics integrating essential elements from family systems theory, emotion dynamics, and appraisal theory. The model is implemented as …

Electrochemical Phosphorus Recovery From The Anaerobically Digested Sludge: Mechanism, Performance, Application, And Solids Disposal, Zixuan Wang Apr 2024

Electrochemical Phosphorus Recovery From The Anaerobically Digested Sludge: Mechanism, Performance, Application, And Solids Disposal, Zixuan Wang

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Phosphorus (P) is life’s bottleneck element and an essential nutrient for food production. However, phosphate rock is a non-renewable resource and its geological distribution is highly uneven, making P recovery a crucial step for a circular economy. Approximately 55% of mined phosphorus ends up in centralized wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), where up to 90% is captured in the sludge. This sludge, treated in anaerobic digesters to produce anaerobically digested sludge (ADS), emerges as a viable secondary source for phosphorus recovery. Recovering phosphorus from ADS typically involves leaching and separation. Leaching mobilizes phosphates from sludge solid phase into a liquid phase, …

Using Therapeutic Writing To Deconstruct Recovery From Postraumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd), Pamela Phillips

Dissertations

Exposure to physical and psychological trauma has produced a post-millennial epoch of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a debilitating anxiety disorder that occurs after exposure to an extreme stressor or prolonged victimization. After an extensive review of treatment protocols in 2008, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) exhorted clinicians to focus on defining the concept of recovery, concentrating on symptom reduction, removal of the PTSD diagnosis, and end-state function. Although the IOM report mobilized large-scale efforts to quantify treatments and standardize delivery of treatment protocols, PTSD recovery remains a concept that has been largely unexplored. The primary aim of this study was …

Microglia help limit the progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) by constraining amyloid-β (Aβ) pathology, effected through a balance of activating and inhibitory intracellular signals delivered by distinct cell surface receptors. Human leukocyte Ig-like receptor B4 (LILRB4) is an inhibitory receptor of the immunoglobulin (Ig) superfamily that is expressed on myeloid cells and recognizes apolipoprotein E (ApoE) among other ligands. Here, we find that LILRB4 is highly expressed in microglia of patients with AD. Using mice that accumulate Aβ and carry a transgene encompassing a portion of the LILR region that includes LILRB4, we corroborated abundant LILRB4 expression in microglia …

Investigating The Role Of Circular Rnas In Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Progression, Sidi Zhao Apr 2024

Investigating The Role Of Circular Rnas In Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Progression, Sidi Zhao

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most common gastrointestinal malignancy and a leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S.A. More than half of CRC patients develop metastatic disease (mCRC) with a 13% average 5-year survival rate. Despite advances in our understanding of primary CRC oncogenesis and biology, the mechanisms of tumor metastasis remain poorly characterized. To date, CRC research has primarily focused on the dysregulation of protein-coding genes to identify oncogenes and tumor suppressors as potential diagnostic and therapeutic targets, thereby under-representing the critical role of many classes of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). One emerging class of ncRNAs, circular RNAs (circRNAs), …

Dihydroceramide Desaturase Governs Endoplasmic Reticulum And Lipid Droplet Homeostasis To Promote Glial Function In The Nervous System, Yuqing Zhu Apr 2024

Dihydroceramide Desaturase Governs Endoplasmic Reticulum And Lipid Droplet Homeostasis To Promote Glial Function In The Nervous System, Yuqing Zhu

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Dihydroceramide desaturase converts dihydroceramides to ceramides in the final step of de novo ceramide biosynthesis. Reduction of dihydroceramide desaturase DEGS1 function in humans leads to hypomyelinating leukodystrophy-18, but the etiology of this disease remains unclear. Using mutants from a forward genetic screen, we discovered that infertile crescent (ifc), the sole Drosophila dihydroceramide desaturase, governs central nervous system development and morphology. ifc is primarily expressed in glia and acts cell-autonomously in glia to control glial morphology and function during nervous system development. Loss of ifc leads to severe glial defects, particularly in cortex glia, including endoplasmic reticulum expansion, glial swelling, compromised …

Interleukin-1Α And Leukemia Inhibitory Factor Promote Cancer-Induced Extramedullary Hematopoiesis, Derek Arthur George Barisas

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Hematopoiesis, the formation of blood and immune cells from stem and progenitor cells, is a central biological process that alters in response to the organismal state. Many cytokines that accompany diseases have an impact on the rate, cellular output, and underlying mechanisms of hematopoiesis. Deepening our understanding of the alterations to hematopoiesis that occur with disease may offer therapeutics that normalize hematopoiesis and promote health. One component of hematopoiesis that is often overlooked are the non-hematopoietic cells of the stem cell niche that have crucial roles in affecting the parameters of hematopoiesis. While progress in understanding the hematopoietic stem cell …

Thirty patients with inactive SLE (15 renal, 15 extrarenal), 17 with renal active AAV, and 32 healthy volunteers were selected as control groups. Serum and urine IP-10, galectin-9, and SIGLEC-1 were tested using ELISA.Results: Levels of sIP-10 (p = 0.046), uIP-10 (p < 0.001), sGalectin-9 (p = 0.03), and uSIGLEC-1 (p = 0.006) were significantly higher in active SLE group compared to the inactive SLE; however, no differences were detected in the comparison of uGalectin-9 (p = 0.18) and sSIGLEC-1 (p = 0.69) between two groups. None of the biomarkers discriminated patients with active renal SLE from active extrarenal SLE. ROC analyses revealed an AUC of 0.63 (0.52–0.73) for sIP-10, 0.78 (0.68–0.86) for uIP-10, 0.64 (0.53–0.74) for sGalectin-9, and 0.68 (0.57–0.77) for uSIGLEC-1 in discriminating disease activity in SLE, which did not outperform C3 (0.75, 0.64–0.84) and C4 (0.72, 0.61–0.82). sIP-10 (p = 0.001), uIP-10 (p = 0.042), and uGalectin-9 (p = 0.009) were significantly increased in patients with active renal SLE compared to active renal AAV. sGalectin-9 (p < 0.001) and sIP-10 levels (p = 0.06) were decreased after 8 (5–22.5) months of treatment. Conclusion: sIP-10, uIP-10, sGalectin-9, and uSIGLEC-1 reflect global disease activity in SLE but do not outperform C3 and C4. sIP-10 and uIP-10 may be specific for active SLE compared to active AAV. sIP-10 and sGalectin-9 might be valuable in monitoring response after treatment.
