A Turn-Off Fluorescent Sensor For Metal Ions Quantifies Corrosion In An Organic Solvent, Lianlian Liu, Zechariah Pfaffenberger, Mark Siegel, Anuj Saini, Lydia Kisley

Faculty Scholarship

We demonstrate that the corrosion of AISI 1045 medium carbon steel and pure aluminum can be quantified by the turn-off fluorescent sensor Phen Green-SK (PGSK) in ethanol-based solutions. We first evaluate the dependence of the chelation enhanced quenching of PGSK on iron and aluminum ion concentrations. Subsequently, we apply PGSK to examine the anodic dissolution of metal corrosion. The observed time-dependent PGSK-quenching quantifies the corrosion rates of two metals over 24 h of immersion in ethanol-based solutions. The PGSK-based quantification of corrosion is compared to scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical techniques, including open circuit potential and Tafel extrapolation. The corrosion …

Can Chatgpt Keep A Secret? An Evaluation Of The Applicability And Suitability Of Trade Secrecy Protection For Ai-Generated Inventions, Gina Campanelli

Duke Law & Technology Review

The rising popularity of generative artificial intelligence has sparked questions around whether AI-generated inventions and works can be protected under current intellectual property regimes, and if so, how. Guidance from the U.S. Copyright Office and recent court cases shed some light on the applicability of copyright and patent protection to AI-generated products; namely “authors” and “inventors” are limited to natural persons. But further developments in copyright and patent law are still lagging behind generative-AI’s rapid growth. Trade secrecy emerges as the most viable path forward to protect AI-generated works and inventions because ownership of trade secrets is not limited to …

The RNA-binding protein PNO1 plays an essential role in ribosome biogenesis. Recent studies have shown that it is involved in tumorigenesis; however, its role in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to examine whether PNO1 can be used as a biomarker of HCC and also examine the therapeutic potential of PNO1 knockout for the treatment of HCC. PNO1 expression was upregulated in HCC and associated with poor prognosis. PNO1 expression was positively associated with tumour stage, lymph node metastasis and poor survival. PNO1 expression was significantly higher in HCC compared to that in …

Activation Of Interleukin 33-Nfκb Axis In Granulosa Cells During Atresia And Its Role In Disposal Of Atretic Follicles, Jean Wu, Colin Carlock, Kiana Tatum, Junbo Shim, Cindy Zhou, Yahuan Lou

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

It has been previously shown that the cytokine interleukin 33 is required for two processes, i.e., autophagic digestion of granulosa cells and recruitment of macrophages into atretic follicles, for full disposal of atretic follicles. Now, this study shows that activation of interleukin 33-suppression of tumorigenicity 2-Nuclear Factor ĸB (NFκB) axis in granulosa in early atretic follicles may regulate those two events. Injection of human chorionic gonadotropin has been shown to induce a transient peak of interleukin 33 expression with synchronized atresia. In this model, interleukin 33-independent expression of suppression of tumorigenicity 2 in granulosa cells was detected in early atretic …

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Due to the high incidence of CVD in older adults, low levels of habitual physical activity, and poor dietary habits, it is imperative to determine an effective minimal dose of exercise that is attainable to mitigate adverse postprandial (post-meal) responses. This study is the first to our knowledge to assess whether accumulated exercise to expend 25% of the calories consumed in a high-fat meal (HFM) of moderate intensity walking will lower postprandial triglycerides (TRG), glucose (GLU) and metabolic load index (MLI: summation of GLU and TRG), compared to continuous exercise, in middle-aged and older adults (OA). Methods: Ten OA (n=10, …

Characterizing The Expression Of The Sphingosine 1-Phosphate Pathway In Injury And Post-Traumatic Fibrosis, Nicole Cubbage May 2024

Characterizing The Expression Of The Sphingosine 1-Phosphate Pathway In Injury And Post-Traumatic Fibrosis, Nicole Cubbage

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Following injury, tissue repair allows for the restoration of the architecture and function of the injured tissue, while tissue replacement is characterized by severely damaged or non-regenerable tissue that is repaired by the laying down of extensive connective tissue, also known as fibrosis. The fibrotic process should be arrested at its early stage to have the greatest impact on preventing or reversing associate sequelae and promoting the regeneration of normal tissue. Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P), a metabolic product of cell membrane sphingolipids, has emerged as a pathway that may be involved in fibrosis. Most of S1P’s actions are mediated through the …

Assessing Structural Variation In And Out Of The Classroom: Characterizing Structural Variation Within Campanula Americana And Effects Of Long Read Sequencing On Students Learning, Tyler Gandee

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Cytonuclear incompatibilities are proposed to be one of the first genetic barriers to arise during speciation, so understanding the underlying evolutionary forces that contribute to cytonuclear incompatibilities is important. Many studies have looked at SNP level variation in the plastid genome and its relationship with cytonuclear incompatibility, but no studies have examined structural variation and its relationship to cytonuclear incompatibility, particularly at the early stages of speciation, i.e. within species. Campanula americana is a great system for this because it exhibits cytonuclear incompatibility and the family in which it is found, the Campanulaceae, exhibits rapidly evolving plastid genomes, including …

Dynamics Of Skin-Based Gene Expression In Red-Sided Garter Snakes (Thamnophis Sirtalis Parietalis): Sex And Seasonal Influences, Emily C. Plant

Masters Theses, 2020-current

The skin is the key organ regulating the animal-environment interface and is particularly sensitive to the abiotic factors of temperate environments, such as extreme cold and aridity during winter. Previous research found that, in the skin, temperate birds and reptiles upregulate expression of lipid synthesis genes to prevent tissue freezing and evaporative water loss in winter. My study species, the red-sided garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis), has seasonally variable skin lipid composition, and females produce a modified set of these lipids that function as a sex pheromone. The pheromone is maximally produced in the spring breeding season following …

Role Of Dunc-13 Isoforms In Alcohol Sensitivity In Drosophila, Makenzie Havard May 2024

Role Of Dunc-13 Isoforms In Alcohol Sensitivity In Drosophila, Makenzie Havard

Honors Theses

Functional alcohol tolerance is an adaptation made by the nervous system to high doses of alcohol, and is seen by a significant reduction in sensitivity to this drug. This tolerance is a significant contributing factor in the progression to Alcohol Use Disorders. A major goal of alcohol research is to understand how alcohol induces this tolerance. Dunc13 is a presynaptic active zone protein essential in synaptic vesicle docking and priming. Alcohol binds to the C1 domain of Dunc13 at physiological concentrations, which inhibits Dunc13 from binding Diacylglycerol. This inhibition is predicted to reduce Dunc13 activity and presynaptic activity. Yet, genetically …

This thesis examines the linguistic representation of African peoples and cultures in French popular culture, specifically as this pertains to immigration. The foundational research question of this project is: how has the representation of Africans in French popular culture evolved since the colonial period? In order to answer this question, I examine seven sources of popular culture, all works of either literature or cinema, depicting three different time periods: 19th-century French colonization in Algeria (1830-1900), the post-World War II “Trente Glorieuses” [Thirty Glorious Years] (1945 to 1975), and the contemporary era (1990-present). I lay out and analyze the language present …

Guardian's Goals And Gains: The Relationship Between Need Satisfaction And Parenting Goals In Parents Of Toddlers, Kallen E. Mitchell May 2024

Guardian's Goals And Gains: The Relationship Between Need Satisfaction And Parenting Goals In Parents Of Toddlers, Kallen E. Mitchell

Honors Theses

Self Determination Theory (SDT) theorizes that when three core psychological needs are met (i.e., competence, relatedness, and autonomy) then humans reach their highest level of optimization (Deci & Ryan, 2000). One common way people tend to satisfy these needs is through social relationships, typically ones where their efforts can be reciprocated; however, not all relationships are reciprocal. This study looks at the psychological needs within an asymmetrical relationship between a parent and their toddler aged child. Given an already established relationship (Smith et al. 2023) between need satisfaction and the types of goals parents have for their college aged kids …

The Effects Of Vigorous-Intensity Acute Exercise On Hippocampal- And Prefrontal Cortex-Dependent Memory, Lauren Hord

Honors Theses

Acute exercise has been shown to differentially impact memory, dependent on whether the task is considered prefrontal cortex- or hippocampal-dependent. More specifically, acute exercise has been shown to impair PFC-dependent memory while enhancing hippocampal-dependent memory. No study has compared whether exercise differentially impacts separate types of cognition, so this experiment was designed to determine the relationship between high-intensity acute exercise and both prefrontal cortex-dependent and hippocampal-dependent memory. This study consisted of five total visits for 55 participants. In the first visit, participants engaged in a maximal exercise test, where their heart rate reserve was obtained. In visits 2-5, participants engaged …

Childhood Food Insecurity As It Relates To Adult Intuitive Eating Patterns, Lily Langley May 2024

Childhood Food Insecurity As It Relates To Adult Intuitive Eating Patterns, Lily Langley

Honors Theses

Many American families struggle with food insecurity and do not have the economic capabilities to obtain a sufficient quantity of nutritious food. Childhood food insecurity is associated with negative health effects and altered relationships with food as an adult. Intuitive eating, a non-diet framework that emphasizes mindful eating, may attenuate these effects. It includes unconditional permission to eat, eating for physical rather than emotional reasons, reliance on hunger and satiety cues, and body-food choice congruence. Previous research has not examined whether childhood food insecurity can affect one’s ability to eat intuitively as an adult. The goal of this study was …

Functional Connectivity Of The Hippocampus In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Noah Watts May 2024

Functional Connectivity Of The Hippocampus In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Noah Watts

Honors Theses

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurological developmental disorder that affects around 1/44 of individuals in the United States. ASD individuals tend to struggle with things such as communication and socialization. This disorder has been found to affect many brain regions; however, autism’s effect on the hippocampus has been heavily understudied. Since the hippocampus is not commonly referred to as the brain region affected by autism, the importance of the hippocampus in ASD may have been unrecognized. While ASD hippocampi have been very narrowly researched (only size and shape), there is compelling evidence that the hippocampus could be another part …
