Joint Force Quarterly
The article explores the unpredictable and uncertain nature of war, arguing that understanding war requires a descriptive rather than a predictive approach. Strategic forecasting often fails, and the true nature of war is often only clear in hindsight. By examining historical conflicts, we can anticipate challenges in future conflicts. The article seeks to determine the best way to study war to enhance the strategic judgment of future leaders. It emphasizes the importance of a long-term perspective, focusing on the constantly changing character of war rather than the unchanging nature. A history-led approach can create a foundation for future military strategies.

Intersection Between Psychopathy And Aggression In Correctional Officers, Lindsay Bergeson
Intersection Between Psychopathy And Aggression In Correctional Officers, Lindsay Bergeson
Theses and Graduate Projects
Excessive use of force incidents within the last decade has resulted in high media coverage. One consequence of this high media coverage is the community more frequently questioning the personality characteristics of police and correctional officers. While the literature has begun to dive into the maladaptive traits of police officers and its relationship to excessive use of force, research on this topic in correctional institutions is scarce. The present study examined the relationship between psychopathy, aggression, and use of force in 27 correctional officers (COs) in Minnesota. The study collected self-report data from COs enrolled in Crisis Intervention Training. Using …

Intrauterine growth-restricted (IUGR) fetuses exhibit systemic inflammation that contributes to programmed deficits in myoblast function and muscle growth. Thus, we sought to determine if targeting fetal inflammation improves muscle growth outcomes. Heat stress-induced IUGR fetal lambs were infused with eicosapentaenoic acid (IUGR+EPA; n = 9) or saline (IUGR; n = 8) for 5 days during late gestation and compared to saline-infused controls (n = 11). Circulating eicosapentaenoic acid was 42% less (p < 0.05) for IUGR fetuses but was recovered in IUGR+EPA fetuses. The infusion did not improve placental function or fetal O2 but resolved the 67% greater (p < 0.05) circulating TNFα observed in IUGR fetuses. This improved myoblast function and muscle growth, as the 23% reduction (p < 0.05) in the ex vivo differentiation of IUGR myoblasts was resolved in IUGR+EPA myoblasts. Semitendinosus, longissimus dorsi, and flexor digitorum superficialis muscles were 24–39% lighter (p < 0.05) for IUGR but not for IUGR+EPA fetuses. Elevated (p < 0.05) IL6R and reduced (p < 0.05) β2 adrenoceptor content in IUGR muscle indicated enhanced inflammatory sensitivity and diminished β2 adrenergic sensitivity. Although IL6R remained elevated, β2 adrenoceptor deficits were resolved in IUGR+EPA muscle, demonstrating a unique underlying mechanism for muscle dysregulation. These findings show that fetal inflammation contributes to IUGR muscle growth deficits and thus may be an effective target for intervention.

Microglia are the resident macrophages of the central nervous system (CNS) that control brain development, maintain neural environments, respond to injuries, and regulate neuroinflammation. Despite their significant impact on various physiological and pathological processes across mammalian biology, there remains a notable gap in our understanding of how microglia perceive and transmit mechanical signals in both normal and diseased states. Recent studies have revealed that microglia possess the ability to detect changes in the mechanical properties of their environment, such as alterations in stiffness or pressure. These changes may occur during development, aging, or in pathological conditions such as trauma or …

A THz radar, with its wide bandwidth, is capable of high-resolution imaging down to the centimeter scale. In this study, a THz radar is applied to detect hydrometeors generated in a spray chamber. The observed backscattering signals show fluctuations at centimeter scales, indicating various hydrometeor distribution patterns along the radar beam. A co-located High-Speed Imaging (HSI) sensor is used to measure the Drop Size Distributions (DSD) in the spray chamber. The radar sampling beam is well aligned with the HSI probes, allowing an objective comparison between the remote sensing and in situ observations. In this study, the observed radar power …

Auditory Sensory Gating: Effects Of Noise, Fan-Yin Cheng, Julia Campbell, Chang Liu
Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) indicate that noise degrades auditory neural encoding, causing decreased peak amplitude and increased peak latency. Different types of noise affect CAEP responses, with greater informational masking causing additional degradation. In noisy conditions, attention can improve target signals’ neural encoding, reflected by an increased CAEP amplitude, which may be facilitated through various inhibitory mechanisms at both pre-attentive and attentive levels. While previous research has mainly focused on inhibition effects during attentive auditory processing in noise, the impact of noise on the neural response during the pre-attentive phase remains unclear. Therefore, this preliminary study aimed to assess …

Assessing The Climate Resilience Of Quercus Garryana In The Portland Metro Region, Jess Rose Nettle Shamek
Dissertations and Theses
In the context of rapid global climate change, understanding the resilience of local tree species is essential for fostering effective environmental stewardship and community hopefulness. Oregon white oak (Quercus garryana), an emblematic species in the Pacific Northwest, has faced significant habitat loss and degradation since settler colonization. However, it also exhibits a predicted resilience to climate change, potentially leading to a range shift and expansion. Species resilience refers to the capacity of a species to persist and adapt in the face of rapid global climate change. Beyond vulnerability assessments and niche models, we know little about this species' …

Leptomeningeal disease (LMD) remains a rapidly lethal complication for late-stage melanoma patients. Here, we characterize the tumor microenvironment of LMD and patient-matched extra-cranial metastases using spatial transcriptomics in a small number of clinical specimens (nine tissues from two patients) with extensive in vitro and in vivo validation. The spatial landscape of melanoma LMD is characterized by a lack of immune infiltration and instead exhibits a higher level of stromal involvement. The tumor-stroma interactions at the leptomeninges activate tumor-promoting signaling, mediated through upregulation of SERPINA3. The meningeal stroma is required for melanoma cells to survive in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and …

Background Wheat grain development in the first few days after pollination determines the number of endosperm cells that influence grain yield potential and is susceptible to various environmental conditions, including high night temperatures (HNTs). Flag leaves and seed-associated bracts (glumes, awn, palea, and lemma) provide nutrients to the developing seed. However, the specific metabolic roles of these tissues are uncertain, especially their dynamics at different developmental stages and the time in a day. Tissue- and time-dependent metabolite profiling may hint at the metabolic roles of tissues and the mechanisms of how HNTs affect daytime metabolic status in early grain development. …

INTRODUCTION: Oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) occurs most frequently in patients >60 years old with a history of tobacco and alcohol use. Epidemiological studies describe increased incidence of OSCC in younger adults (years). Despite its poor prognosis, knowledge of OSCC tumor microenvironment (TME) characteristics in younger adults is scarce and could help inform possible resistance to emerging treatment options.
METHODS: Patients with OSCC were evaluated using TCGA-HNSC (n=121) and a stage and subsite-matched institutional cohort (n=8) to identify differential gene expression focusing on the extracellular matrix (ECM) and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) processes in younger (≤45 years) vs. older adults …

Chromosome-Scale Assemblies And A Pangenome Reveal Ltr Repeat Dynamics As A Major Driver Of Genome Evolution In Chenopodium, Kate E. Jaggi
Theses and Dissertations
The genus Chenopodium, which comprises around 150 species globally, is characterized by its wide geographic distribution and ecological adaptability, particularly in temperate regions. Some species, such as Chenopodium quinoa and Chenopodium pallidicaule, have served as domesticated staple crops in the Andean region of South America for centuries, valued for their robust nutritional profile and adaptability to adverse environmental conditions. In contrast, wild Chenopodium species exhibit broad geographic distributions and diverse niche adaptations, functioning as reservoirs for beneficial traits, including disease resistance and climate hardiness, essential for enhancing domesticated crops through introgression and breeding efforts. However, taxonomic classification within the genus …

RAS pathway mutations, which are present in 30% of patients with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) at diagnosis, confer a high risk of resistance to and progression after hypomethylating agent (HMA) therapy, the current standard of care for the disease. Here, using single-cell, multi-omics technologies, we seek to dissect the biological mechanisms underlying the initiation and progression of RAS pathway-mutated CMML. We identify that RAS pathway mutations induce transcriptional reprogramming of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) and downstream monocytic populations in response to cell-intrinsic and -extrinsic inflammatory signaling that also impair the functions of immune cells. HSPCs expand at disease …

Impacts Of Stream Habitat Restoration On Macroinvertebrate Assemblages: A Systematic Literature Review, Morgan E. Seitzer
University Honors Theses
Globally, river restoration has become a popular tool for improving the health of a watershed and restoring ecosystem services, but still has significant knowledge gaps. In certain areas and scientific communities, special attention has been given to the response of macroinvertebrates as a measure of restoration success. This systematic literature review aims to highlight and discuss the patterns in studies that have comparable before-and-after restoration data on macroinvertebrates after reconnecting stream channels to their floodplains. Macroinvertebrate sampling is a simple if not time-consuming task that can reveal important data about habitat quality. Because they serve as an important food source …

Feature selection (FS) plays a vital role in minimizing the high-dimensional data as much as possible to aid in enhancing the classification accuracy and reducing computational costs. The purpose of the FS techniques is to extract the most effective subset features, which might enable the machine learning (ML) algorithms to better grasp the input data’s patterns and improve their classification performance. Although several metaheuristic algorithms have been recently presented to solve this problem, they still suffer from several disadvantages, such as getting stuck in local optima, slow convergence speed, and a lack of population diversity, which prevent them from achieving …
