Climate Change And Perceived Vulnerability: Gender, Heritage, And Religion Predict Risk Perception And Knowledge Of Climate Change In Hawaii, Kevin Showalter, David López-Carr, Daniel Ervin
Climate Change And Perceived Vulnerability: Gender, Heritage, And Religion Predict Risk Perception And Knowledge Of Climate Change In Hawaii, Kevin Showalter, David López-Carr, Daniel Ervin
The Geographical Bulletin
This study explores climate change related risk perception among residents of the ‘Big Island’ of Hawaii, an environmentally vulnerable region. Adapting established instruments, we investigated potential links among socio-demographic variables, risk perception, and perceived preparedness and knowledge, as they relate to climate change. Results reveal relationships between risk perceptions for climate change and gender, with females significantly more aware of the risks posed by climate change, but less prepared than men. Additionally, indigenous and native respondents felt that climate change events posed more risk and felt less prepared compared to non-indigenous. Results suggest that an understanding of how risk perceptions …
Locational Analysis Of Seasonal Migration Of Nomadic Pastoralists In A Part Of Northern Nigeria, Nathaniel Olugbade Adeoye
Locational Analysis Of Seasonal Migration Of Nomadic Pastoralists In A Part Of Northern Nigeria, Nathaniel Olugbade Adeoye
The Geographical Bulletin
There seems to be paradigm shift in the direction of seasonal migration among the nomadic pastoralists in southern Nigeria owing to recent social events and hostility confronting them in their communities. This study examined the new directions of seasonal migration among nomadic pastoralists, the migration pattern, distances covered during migration, period of return to the home area, factors responsible for the migration pattern, and the challenges encountered in the new area. The study relied mainly on primary data, which emanated from a survey questionnaire. The resultant data were used to elicit information on the relevant variables of the study. One …

Can An Equine-Assisted Learning Course Improve Emotional Intelligence In Undergraduate Students?, Danielle Y. Clark, Julia M. Mack, Kenneth G. Mccurdy
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Background: Emotional intelligence, a construct that many experts consider an essential component of life success, is moving in a concerning direction among American college students. Equine-assisted interventions may be an innovative modality for influencing these skills. Purpose: This study explores the effectiveness of a 15-week equine-assisted experiential learning course on emotional intelligence among undergraduate college students. Methodology/Approach: The intervention group consisted of 18 students who participated in a three-credit psychology course entitled Horses for Interpersonal Skills, which involved classroom instruction and an equine-assisted learning (EAL) component. This group was compared to a no intervention sample of 26 students enrolled in …
Lingual Histiocytic Sarcoma In A Dog: A Case Report, Seulgi Bae
Lingual Histiocytic Sarcoma In A Dog: A Case Report, Seulgi Bae
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
An 8-year-old spayed Maltese dog was presented for the evaluation of a lingual mass. The dog had excessive drooling and dysphagia. Oral examination revealed a soft, fluctuating mass at the left side of the tongue. Computed tomography showed a 21 × 32 × 66 mm lingual mass and enlarged left medial retropharyngeal lymph node. On cytology of the lingual mass, a round cell tumor was suspected; however, it was not responsive to glucocorticoid therapy. Because of severe complications, glossectomy and lymphadenectomy were performed; unfortunately, the patient died because of dyspnea in the postoperative period. Histopathologic examination and immunohistochemistry revealed lingual …
Synthesis Of Zno: Zro2 Nanocomposites Using Green Method For Medical Applications, Mohammed J. Tuama, Maysoon F. Alias
Synthesis Of Zno: Zro2 Nanocomposites Using Green Method For Medical Applications, Mohammed J. Tuama, Maysoon F. Alias
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
These days, nanocomposites are very popular, especially in medical applications. The spread of diseases in general, and those caused by microbes and cancerous diseases in particular, and the increased resistance of these diseases to antibiotics, have led to the need for the rapid, low-cost, and environmentally friendly production of nanocomposites. To create the chemical G-ZnO: ZrO2 and S-ZnO: ZrO2 (green technique), two different plant extracts were utilized: Z. officinal and S. aromaticum. The effective synthesis and acceptable properties features of the nanoparticles were confirmed using characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) , diffuse reflectance spectroscopy …

Enhancing Rna-Lipid Nanoparticle Delivery: Organ- And Cell-Specificity And Barcoding Strategies, Pu-Sheng Wei, Nagasri Thota, Greshma John, Evelyn Chang, Sunjae Lee, Yuanjun Wang, Zitao Ma, Yu-Hsuan Tsai, Kuo-Ching Mei
Pharmacy Faculty Scholarship
Recent advancements in RNA therapeutics highlight the critical need for precision gene delivery systems that target specific organs and cells. Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) have emerged as key vectors in delivering mRNA and siRNA, offering protection against enzymatic degradation, enabling targeted delivery and cellular uptake, and facilitating RNA cargo release into the cytosol. This review discusses the development and optimization of organ- and cell-specific LNPs, focusing on their design, mechanisms of action, and therapeutic applications. We explore innovations such as DNA/RNA barcoding, which facilitates high-throughput screening and precise adjustments in formulations. We address major challenges, including improving endosomal escape, minimizing off-target …

Gsep Research Symposium Proceedings - 2024
GSEP Research Symposium
The 8th Annual GSEP Research Symposium, was themed "Dismantling Barriers between Research and Practice: Shining a Light on Global Interdisciplinary Solutions," took place on July 18-19, 2024, at the picturesque Château d'Hauteville in Saint-Légier-La Chiésaz, Switzerland.
The annual symposium is hosted by the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology (GSEP). The symposium served as a dynamic platform for students, faculty, alums, and staff to come together and explore innovative ideas across multiple disciplines. Featuring 69 selected presentations under five distinct tracks, the proceedings showcase groundbreaking research, foster meaningful discussions, and promote professional development.
The symposium aimed to bridge …
Deciphering Evolutionary Co-Option By Studying The Origin Of Self-Fertility In Caenorhabditis Nematodes, Jonathan P. Harbin
Deciphering Evolutionary Co-Option By Studying The Origin Of Self-Fertility In Caenorhabditis Nematodes, Jonathan P. Harbin
Theses and Dissertations
In my research, I examined the characteristics of male and female sex-determination mutants in C. nigoni and investigated the regulatory pathway they define. This work tested whether flexibility in the sex-determination pathway was a preexisting condition that favored the origin of self-fertility in Caenorhabditis. Furthermore, I developed an approach for using interspecies hybrid mutants to assess the robustness of the C. nigoni pathway. My findings showed that the C. nigoni pathway is highly robust and canalized, suggesting that changes leading to self-fertility must have involved the impairment of this canalization in the germ line, to allow eventual alteration of germ …
