Heavy Metals Pollution In Roadside Ecosystems, Lilian Matafu
Heavy Metals Pollution In Roadside Ecosystems, Lilian Matafu
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Heavy metals refer to metallic elements that are characterized by having a relatively high density and they are toxic or poisonous even at low concentration. They are environmental pollutant owing to toxicity and longevity in atmosphere and ability to accumulate in living things via bioaccumulation. They tend to enter in different system such as food chain. Analyses of water, soil sediment and the surrounding growing plants (Cynodon dactylon and Cyperus species) for selected heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Zn and Cu) were conducted on a roadside pond located at Boko MSB, Dar es Salaam. Pond water, soil sediments and plant samples …
Guarding Against Informants In Wrongful Conviction Cases. “The Trust Of The Innocent Is The Liar’S Most Useful Tool.”, Marc Consalo
Guarding Against Informants In Wrongful Conviction Cases. “The Trust Of The Innocent Is The Liar’S Most Useful Tool.”, Marc Consalo
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
By some estimates, tens of thousands of individuals are currently wrongfully convicted and serving time in the United States’ prison system for crimes they did not commit. Further concerning is that one of the most common reasons for these unjust outcomes rests with the use of jailhouse informants who often lie in exchange for time off their own sentences. While many other reasons exist for this epidemic, curtailing corrupt jailhouse snitches in order to reduce the harm they commit against innocent citizens is within our grasp. This Article purports to offer several solutions to reduce and in some cases eliminate …

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers
Individuals with chronic inflammatory and immune disorders are at an increased risk of atherosclerotic events and premature cardiovascular (CV) disease. Despite extensive literature exploring the relationship between "non-traditional" atherosclerotic conditions and CV risk, many aspects remain unresolved, including the underlying mechanisms promoting the "non-traditional CV risk", the development of an innovative and comprehensive CV risk assessment tool, and recommendations for tailored interventions. This review aims to evaluate the available evidence on key "non-traditional" CV risk-enhancer conditions, with a focus on assessing and managing CV risk factors. We conducted a comprehensive review of 412 original articles, narrative and systematic reviews, and …

Between Pedagogical Content Knowledge And Confidence: A Case Study Of Pronunciation Training And Teacher Preparation, Lena Barrantes-Elizondo, Joshua Gordon
Faculty Publications
While many teachers do not feel confident teaching pronunciation because of limited preparation in different areas, research has demonstrated positive effects of training in pronunciation pedagogy, as teachers who receive such training develop cognitions (i.e., knowledge, beliefs, thoughts, actions) that align with current tenets of pronunciation pedagogy. Drawing on this assertion, this paper reports the results of a qualitative case study with five pre-service teaching-English-to-speakers-of-other-languages (TESOL) teachers enrolled in a pedagogical pronunciation course as part of their teacher training program. The study’s main purpose was to understand the role of training in developing content knowledge (CK) and pedagogical content knowledge …

Findings indicate that people with higher mathematical literacy solve problems more efficiently, especially in budgeting, as accurate calculations minimize financial mistakes and facilitate long-term financial planning. In cooking, proportional reasoning ensures the accuracy of recipes, thus providing consistent culinary results. Travel …
The State Of Global And African Ecology, Peter Knox
The State Of Global And African Ecology, Peter Knox
Landas
This article recounts the growth of concern for the environment in the latter half of the 20th Century, and its entry into Catholic magisterial theology. It expands on the ecological theory of planetary boundaries, and identifies how the theory surfaces in Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’. Based upon solid contemporary science, the encyclical is well founded to outline an appropriate and compassionate moral theology of care for creation. The article cites multiple instances where African people are at the nexus of environmental and social crises, focusing on how contemporary ecological factors affect women in particular. Environmental crises should not …

Background/Objectives: Lung cancer is the primary cause of cancer-related deaths. Most patients are typically diagnosed at advanced stages. Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) has been proven to reduce lung cancer mortality, but screening programs using LDCT are associated with a high number of false positives and unnecessary thoracotomies. It is therefore imperative that a certain diagnosis is refined, especially in cases of solitary pulmonary nodules that are difficult to technically access for an accurate preoperative diagnosis. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) involved in intercellular communication may be an innovative biomarker for diagnosis and therapeutic strategies in lung cancer, regarding their ability to carry …

Chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CART) targeting CD19 through CD28.ζ signaling induce rapid lysis of leukemic blasts, contrasting with persistent tumor control exhibited by 4-1BB.ζ-CART. We reasoned that molecular dynamics at the CART immune synapse (CARIS) could explain differences in their tumor rejection kinetics. We observed that CD28.ζ-CART engaged in brief highly lethal CARIS and mastered serial killing, whereas 4-1BB.ζ-CART formed lengthy CARIS and relied on robust expansion and cooperative killing. We analyzed CARIS membrane lipid rafts (mLRs) and found that, upon tumor engagement, CD28.ζ-CAR molecules rapidly but transiently translocated into mLRs, mobilizing the microtubular organizing center and lytic granules …

Conventionally, the size, shape, and biomechanics of cartilages are determined by their voluminous extracellular matrix. By contrast, we found that multiple murine cartilages consist of lipid-filled cells called lipochondrocytes. Despite resembling adipocytes, lipochondrocytes were molecularly distinct and produced lipids exclusively through de novo lipogenesis. Consequently, lipochondrocytes grew uniform lipid droplets that resisted systemic lipid surges and did not enlarge upon obesity. Lipochondrocytes also lacked lipid mobilization factors, which enabled exceptional vacuole stability and protected cartilage from shrinking upon starvation. Lipid droplets modulated lipocartilage biomechanics by decreasing the tissue's stiffness, strength, and resilience. Lipochondrocytes were found in multiple mammals, including humans, …

Animals requiring purposeful movement for survival are endowed with mechanoreceptors, called proprioceptors, that provide essential sensory feedback from muscles and joints to spinal cord circuits, which modulates motor output. Despite the essential nature of proprioceptive signaling in daily life, the mechanisms governing proprioceptor activity are poorly understood. Here, we identified nonredundant roles for two voltage-gated sodium channels (NaVs), NaV1.1 and NaV1.6, in mammalian proprioception. Deletion of NaV1.6 in somatosensory neurons (NaV1.6cKO mice) causes severe motor deficits accompanied by loss of proprioceptive transmission, which contrasts with our previous findings using similar mouse models to target NaV1.1 (NaV1.1cKO). In NaV1.6cKO animals, we …

In 2005, the International Conference on Harmonisation’s (ICH’s) ‘’Q9’’, aimed at providing the biopharmaceutical sector with guidance towards a science and risk-based approach to quality management was published. The concepts outlined in ICH Q9 focused on the fact that evaluation of the risk to quality should be based on scientific knowledge and ultimately link to the protection of the patient.
The purpose of ICH Q9 is to offer a systematic approach to quality risk management (QRM). It serves as a foundation or resource document that is independent of yet supports other ICH Quality documents and complements existing quality practices, requirements, …

While the authors have published widely on the need to unite the twin enablers of ICH Q10 [1], quality risk management (QRM) and knowledge management (KM), how to integrate QRM and KM in practice has proven to be quite challenging. QRM and KM are wide-ranging activities that impact many elements of pharmaceutical manufacturing and regulation. Pharmaceutical manufacturers and their regulators work to apply risk-based approaches to their work and strive to use knowledge in a smart and efficient way, but so far, in the experience of the authors, it has proven difficult to get these things right.

This research aims to overcome the difficulties of surgical tumor removal, especially in brain tumors that needs precision and time saving of the operations. The traditional surgical approach often is slow and targeting accurate manual cutting of the tumor, which is time-consuming and increase the risk to the patient. The error in cutting the deep layers of the tumor can occur, which increase the cost and dangerous for the patient.
To overcome these challenges, a proposed solution involves designing a robot that can quickly and accurately remove tumors by following their contours as it comes from the medical imaging data, …

A finite difference model is developed to simulate the thermal behaviour of the PV system with an innovative cooling system. The proposed cooling system combines an aluminium heat spreader (AHS) with phase change material (PCM) placed at the backside of the solar panel. The new non-standard model is solved using MATLAB software and is validated with real experimental data collected under hot climate conditions. The new nonlocal model is found to be more effective in analyzing heat transfer processes throughout the entirety of the PV system compared to conventional PV models. Additionally, the new cooling PV system has been compared …
