Morphological And Scanning Electron Microscopy Characterization Of A Spirurid In A Wild Sunda Pangolin (Manis Javanica), Punnarat Vibulchan, Chong Shin Min, Chiharu Okumura, Piyanan Taweethavonsawat Jan 2025

Morphological And Scanning Electron Microscopy Characterization Of A Spirurid In A Wild Sunda Pangolin (Manis Javanica), Punnarat Vibulchan, Chong Shin Min, Chiharu Okumura, Piyanan Taweethavonsawat

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This study identifies and characterizes a spirurid in a wild Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica) using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Native to Southeast Asia, the Sunda pangolin faces critical threats from poaching, illegal trafficking for its scales and meat, habitat loss, urban conflicts, and disease. Despite this, little is known about the biology of wild Sunda pangolins. In this research, spirurid parasites were recovered from a pangolin fatally injured in a vehicular collision. The parasites were preserved and analyzed with SEM, revealing key morphological features such as papillae, lip-like structures, and an anal opening in females. This study enhances …

Charting A New Vision: Lessons On Vision & Change From A Network Of Biology Educators, Jeremy L. Hsu, Anjali Misra, Michael J. Wolyniak, Carlos C. Goller, Stephanie Mathews, Uma Swamy, Dina L. Newman, Michael E. Moore

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

The 2011 Vision & Change report outlined several recommendations for transforming undergraduate biology education, sparking multiple pedagogical reform efforts. Among these was the Promoting Active Learning and Mentoring (PALM) network, an NSF-funded program that provided mentorship and training to instructors on implementing active learning in the classroom. Here, we provide a perspective on how members of the biology education community in PALM view the recommendations of Vision & Change, drawing upon our experiences both as members of PALM and as leaders of an associated project funded by another NSF grant that hosted PALM alumni at various conferences. These efforts …

INTRODUCTION: Sex as a biological variable (SABV) may help to account for the differential development and expression of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms among trauma-exposed males and females. Here, we investigate the impact of SABV on PTSD-related neural alterations in resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) within three core intrinsic connectivity networks (ICNs): the salience network (SN), central executive network (CEN), and default mode network (DMN).

METHODS: Using an independent component analysis (ICA), we compared rsFC of the SN, CEN, and DMN between males and females, with and without PTSD (n = 47 females with PTSD, n = 34 males with PTSD, …

"It's Definitely New And Different...It's Really Engaging": Understanding The Power Of Storytelling Towards Secure Password Creation, Rizu Paudel, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen

Computer Science Student Research

There is a dearth in existing literature to attain systematic understanding of leveraging digital storytelling in security designs. As we begin to address this gap, we focused on user authentication where the existing password composition policies and password meters often fail to help users around creating a strong and memorable password. To this end, we conducted a lab study with 19 participants, where we updated our initial designs in an iterative manner based on their feedback. We then conducted a between-subject online study with 104 participants over Amazon Mechanical Turk to evaluate our designs. We found that all of our …

Spin Caloritronics As A Probe Of Nonunitary Superconductors, Taiki Matsushita, Takeshi Mizushima, Yusuke Masaki, Satoshi Fujimoto, Ilya Vekhter

Faculty Publications

Superconducting spintronics explores the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism, sparking substantial interest in nonunitary superconductors as a platform for magneto-superconducting phenomena. However, identifying nonunitary superconductors remains challenging. We demonstrate that spin current driven by thermal gradients sensitively probes the nature of the condensate in nonunitary superconductors. Spin polarization of the condensate in momentum space induces the superconducting spin Seebeck effect, where a spin current is generated along thermal gradients without a thermoelectric charge current. Notably, the nonvanishing superconducting spin Seebeck effect provides a smoking gun evidence of nonunitary superconductivity because it reflects the spin polarization of the condensate in momentum …

From Theory To Practice: Understanding And Characterizing Stream-Aquifer Exchange In Anthropogenically Modified Fluvial Systems, Benjamin Ledesma Jan 2025

From Theory To Practice: Understanding And Characterizing Stream-Aquifer Exchange In Anthropogenically Modified Fluvial Systems, Benjamin Ledesma

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The interactions between groundwater and surface water significantly influence water quality, availability, and ecosystem health worldwide. However, characterizing these exchanges remains challenging due to their occurrence across multiple spatial and temporal scales. This research addresses these challenges for lowland channelized streams, where anthropogenic modifications have altered natural exchange patterns. First, a systematic evaluation of field methods led to the development of an integrated characterization approach combining electromagnetic induction, potentiomanometers, and temperature profilers. Application of this methodology along 19 kilometers of the Loosahatchie River and Nonconnah Creek in Shelby County, Tennessee, revealed distinct patterns of stream-aquifer connectivity influenced by both geological …

Examining The Creative Process Of Visual Artists: A Phenomenological Study, Filiberto Vargas Jan 2025

Examining The Creative Process Of Visual Artists: A Phenomenological Study, Filiberto Vargas

Dissertations

Creativity fuels problem solving and innovation, driving both economic growth and individual success. Yet, many schools and organizations fail to nurture it. Today, there is a decline in creativity scores among U.S. students. This is concerning since many of these students will be the future leaders of organizations and communities. For this reason, this dissertation explores the creative process of visual artists to better understand how creativity can be cultivated. Visual artists' perspectives and sense-and-meaning-making processes offer a unique view of innovation and creativity. However, there is limited research on the creative processes of contemporary visual artists from culturally diverse …

Developing Real-Time, Online Beam Control Of Uhdr Irradiators To Facilitate Flash Translational Investigations, Austin M. Sloop

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

The field of radiation oncology seeks novel techniques to increase the therapeutic ratio to treat malignancies while minimizing damage and toxicities in healthy tissues. While it was observed that delivering therapeutic doses at high dose rate could elicit lower biological effects over a half-century ago, the field of ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) radiation therapy (colloquially known as FLASH RT) has seen a resurgence in recent years due to an alignment of accelerator capability, dosimetric advances, and improved biotechnological techniques. This has opened the door to studying potential underlying mechanisms such that we may leverage the effects of FLASH tissue sparing …

Heavy Metals Pollution In Roadside Ecosystems, Lilian Matafu Jan 2025

Heavy Metals Pollution In Roadside Ecosystems, Lilian Matafu

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Heavy metals refer to metallic elements that are characterized by having a relatively high density and they are toxic or poisonous even at low concentration. They are environmental pollutant owing to toxicity and longevity in atmosphere and ability to accumulate in living things via bioaccumulation. They tend to enter in different system such as food chain. Analyses of water, soil sediment and the surrounding growing plants (Cynodon dactylon and Cyperus species) for selected heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Zn and Cu) were conducted on a roadside pond located at Boko MSB, Dar es Salaam. Pond water, soil sediments and plant samples …

Guarding Against Informants In Wrongful Conviction Cases. “The Trust Of The Innocent Is The Liar’S Most Useful Tool.”, Marc Consalo Jan 2025

Guarding Against Informants In Wrongful Conviction Cases. “The Trust Of The Innocent Is The Liar’S Most Useful Tool.”, Marc Consalo

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

By some estimates, tens of thousands of individuals are currently wrongfully convicted and serving time in the United States’ prison system for crimes they did not commit. Further concerning is that one of the most common reasons for these unjust outcomes rests with the use of jailhouse informants who often lie in exchange for time off their own sentences. While many other reasons exist for this epidemic, curtailing corrupt jailhouse snitches in order to reduce the harm they commit against innocent citizens is within our grasp. This Article purports to offer several solutions to reduce and in some cases eliminate …
