The mammalian genome contains ~20,000 genes. Some of these genes are essential for the cellular processes of most, if not all, cells, and are therefore expressed across a variety of cell types. Other genes, however, are involved in specialized processes such as defense against pathogens. These immunity-related genes are often only expressed in immune cells that require them to function. My dissertation addresses how the expression of immunity-related genes is regulated, with the rationale that such knowledge will inform the development of therapies to turn on/off immune genes, as a way of activating/inhibiting the effector functions of immune cells, which …

Molecular Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) are polymer based solid phase extraction (SPE)recognition systems. MIPs were formulated using Acrylic Acid (AA) and Ethylene glycoldimethacrylate (EGDMA) to selectively target the following compounds Bisphenol A (BPA),Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and caffeine. This study presents novel MIPs for each targetqualitatively analysed with Raman Spectroscopy with Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy(SERS) substrates. SERS can greatly enhance Raman signals allowing for detection of lowconcentration solutions. BPA, a possible carcinogen and hormone disruptor, is a very commonreagent in manufacturing as is known to leech into environmental and consumer products.PFOA, a constituent of polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), can cause kidney and thyroiddisease, …

INTRODUCTION: The use of addictive substances remains a major health problem in the U.S. An increase in drug overdose and mortality was observed during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in underserved populations. This surge also impacted pregnant women especially with the use of marijuana (THC) and opioids.

METHODS: Retrospective study analyzing mother-infant dyads with reported Meconium Drug Screen (MDS) results, from January 2018 through April 2023 at a reference hospital serving an urban and rural area of Arkansas. Neonatal infections, a significant contributor to infant morbidity and mortality worldwide, are predominantly caused by pathogenic bacteria. Globally, bacterial sepsis accounts for 11.3% of neonatal deaths with Group B Streptococcus (GBS) being the leading cause, along with Escherichia coli, and coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS). Neonatal infections caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria is now a worldwide concern, further increasing mortality rates and associated healthcare costs. This report describes the design, development, and optimization of an electrochemical deoxyfluorination of arenes using a tetrafluoropyridine-derived leaving group. NEt₃·3HF serves as the fluoride source, and the reactions are conducted using either constant potential or constant current electrolysis in an undivided electrochemical cell. Mechanistic studies support a net oxidative pathway, in which initial single-electron oxidation generates a radical cation intermediate that is trapped by fluoride. The resulting radical undergoes a second oxidation reaction, followed by the loss of the leaving group to yield the fluoroarene product.

Monroe Work was a Chicago School trained sociologist, criminologist, and researcher who, despite not being well-known in the social sciences, produced a body of research that is exemplified in what is now known as public sociology. Work was associated with prominent sociologist and activist W.E.B. Du Bois while working in Savannah, Georgia, and later with Booker T. Washington, with whom he worked at the Tuskegee Institute, heading the records and research department. Work was a talented researcher who worked behind the scenes with both Du Bois and Washington to provide needed research in a time of intense racial conflict. …

This study is essential because opioid use disorder affects people worldwide, and the number of people diagnosed with opioid use disorder rises annually. Annually, thousands of people overdose, with a plethora of these overdoses resulting in death, due to opiate use. This paper explores the possibility that informal property right systems evolve unique features as a function of the characteristics of the resources over which they are established. We develop an experimental environment that allows us to test this hypothesis by comparing the emergence of property in (virtual) land when resource yields are either high- or low-variance and renewable or non-renewable. Previous research suggests that high-variance resources may lead to relatively insecure claims to property. Intuition suggests that this may be amplified when those resources are renewable. Glioblastoma (GBM) tumors exhibit extensive genomic, epigenomic, and transcriptional diversity, with significant intratumoral heterogeneity, complicating standard treatment approaches involving radiation (RT) and the DNA-alkylating agent temozolomide (TMZ). In this study, we employed an integrative multi-omics approach, including targeted proteomics, transcriptomics, genomics, and DNA methylation profiling, to investigate the response of a representative panel of GBM patient-derived cancer stem cells (CSCs) to astrocytic differentiation and RT and TMZ treatments. Differentiated CSC progenies retained the expression of key stemness genes and survival pathways, while activating the BMP-Smad signaling pathway and upregulating extracellular matrix components. Large-scale whole-genome sequencing (WGS) studies have improved our understanding of the contributions of coding and noncoding rare variants to complex human traits. Leveraging association effect sizes across multiple traits in WGS rare variant association analysis can improve statistical power over single-trait analysis, and also detect pleiotropic genes and regions. Existing multi-trait methods have limited ability to perform rare variant analysis of large-scale WGS data. We propose MultiSTAAR, a statistical framework and computationally scalable analytical pipeline for functionally informed multi-trait rare variant analysis in large-scale WGS studies. Pregnancy through early childhood is a period of tremendous neural and behavioral development. Neuronal birth and migration occur prenatally and result in the formation of neonatal functional and structural networks. These early brain networks are a building block for postnatal development wherein infants rapidly learn a variety of new skills, including socioemotional skills such as emotion regulation and moral understanding. During the acquisition of these skills, even typically developing toddlers can act aggressively or impulsively; however, toddlers with high levels of externalizing behaviors are more likely to develop clinical externalizing disorders later in childhood and adolescence. Individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) require lifelong treatment to manage their symptoms, and many also struggle with comorbid substance use disorders (BD-SUD) that complicate treatment adherence. Despite these challenges, there has been limited research on what factors predict successful treatment adherence in this population. This study was thus conducted to identify key predictors of adherence among individuals with BD-SUD. Several factors were examined, including age, gender, type of substance used at admission, opioid medication-assisted therapy, length of stay in inpatient psychiatric care, type of discharge service, and participation in self-help groups before discharge. The burgeoning scholarly interest in the concepts of deification and Paul’s “in Christ” participatory soteriology necessitates a deeper exploration of their interrelation with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Regardless of the increase in recent scholarship, the connection between participation in Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit remains underexplored. This study examines the relationship between deification, Pauline participatory soteriology, and pneumatology through an exegetical analysis of Romans 8:1–17.
