Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Florpyrauxifen-benzyl is a new synthetic auxin herbicide labeled in rice with a broad spectrum of control, typically more potent on broadleaf weeds. It has garnered some interest as a potential broadleaf weed control option for use in corn at low rates. Field experiments were conducted in Fayetteville, Arkansas, from 2019 through 2021 to examine the response of corn to postemergence applications of florpyrauxifen-benzyl at three rates (7.5, 15, and 30 g ae ha-1), as well as mixtures of the herbicide with atrazine (at half or full rate), mesotrione, or a combination of atrazine (at half rate) and mesotrione. Injury and …

Therapeutic Targeting Of The Janus Kinase/Signal Transducer And Activator Of Transcription Pathway In Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma, Alisha Kashyap, Julia Dai, Xiao Ni
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Background/Objectives: Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) is a rare group of non-Hodgkin lymphomas characterized by the clonal expansion of malignant T cells. While current treatments can alleviate symptoms and significant progress has been made in treating leukemic CTCL, a definitive cure remains elusive. Dysregulation of the Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) signaling pathway is a key driver of CTCL pathogenesis. As a result, therapeutic strategies targeting JAK/STAT signaling have gained momentum, with the increasing use of JAK inhibitors and other agents that effectively suppress this pathway. These immune-modulating therapies have broad effects on physiological processes, inflammation, and …

The Last Interglacial (∼129,000–116,000 years ago) provides key insights into temperate European vegetation dynamics before significant anthropogenic impacts. Using LOVE (Local Vegetation Estimates) and REVEALS (Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites) models, this study reconstructs vegetation patterns across local (∼9 km²) and regional (∼100 km²) scales. Local landscapes presented a heterogeneous mosaic, with averages of 17 % open vegetation, 21 % closed forests, and 63 % light woodlands, reflecting high fine-scale heterogeneity. Importantly, weak local-regional correlations highlight the importance of localised drivers. Longitude and, to a lesser extent, precipitation explained some variation in local vegetation openness, but heterogeneity …
Options For Sustainable High Seas Fisheries Management In The Southwest Atlantic, Cornell Overfield, Jessica Yllemo
Options For Sustainable High Seas Fisheries Management In The Southwest Atlantic, Cornell Overfield, Jessica Yllemo
International Law Studies
The Southwest Atlantic lacks a regional fishery management organization, leaving one of the world’s largest squid fisheries at risk of overfishing during high seas migrations. This article reviews measures available to coastal States as they seek to protect regional ecosystems and their economic interests. The ideal policy response is to conclude a regional fisheries management organization covering squid and other key regional stocks. This body should follow best practices and include the relevant coastal and fishing States. Other options that provide some value for managing regional fishing and its environmental consequences include reviving and expanding catch information sharing, ratifying and …

Circadian medicine, the delivery of therapeutic interventions based on an individual's daily rhythms, has shown improved efficacy and reduced side-effects for various treatments. Rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory diseases are characterized by diurnal changes in cytokines, leading to inflammatory flares, with peak disease activity in the early morning. Using a combination of synthetic biology and tissue engineering, we developed circadian-based gene circuits, termed "chronogenetics", that express a prescribed transgene downstream of the core clock gene promoter, Period2 (Per2). Gene circuits were transduced into induced pluripotent stem cells that were tissue-engineered into cartilage constructs. Our anti-inflammatory chronogenetic constructs produced therapeutic concentrations …

Mutations in the genes encoding TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP43) or TANK- binding kinase 1 (TBK1) have been strongly associated with neurological disorders, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia. TDP43 is a key component of pathological protein aggregates found in more than 90% of ALS cases, while TBK1 plays a critical role in innate immune signaling and autophagy. Despite these associations, the precise molecular mechanisms linking TDP43 or TBK1 dysfunction to neurodegeneration remain poorly understood. The present study examined the impact of TDP43 on TBK1-mediated type I interferon (IFN1) production in HEK-293T cells. The findings demonstrated that co-expression …

Additional Geographic Records Of Dekay’S Brownsnake (Storeria Dekayi) In Nebraska, Including A Late Seasonal Observation And Likely Range Expansion, Lauren Bahe, Dan D. Fogell, Keith Geluso
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Dekay’s Brownsnake (Storeria dekayi) occurs across much of eastern North America, inhabiting diverse environments such as marshes, woodlands, woodland edges, and urban areas. In Nebraska, recent studies documented its presence beyond the extreme southeastern region of the state, indicating a potential range expansion to the west and north. Our study continues to update its distribution with four additional county records. Two counties, Franklin and Harlan, represent the farthest west observations for Dekay’s Brownsnake in the state, further indicating a likely westward expansion. An observation from 6 December 2023 also represents the latest seasonal observation in the state. Despite …

SUMOylation, the post-translational modification of proteins by small ubiquitin-like modifiers, plays a critical role in regulating various cellular processes, including innate immunity. This modification is essential for modulating immune responses and influencing signaling pathways that govern the activation and function of immune cells. Recent studies suggest that SUMOylation also contributes to the pathophysiology of central nervous system (CNS) viral infections, where it contributes to the host response and viral replication dynamics. Here, we explore the multifaceted role of SUMOylation in innate immune signaling and its implications for viral infections within the CNS. Notably, we present novel proteomic analyses aimed at …

What is new?
While Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have, in recent years, placed greater emphasis on promoting good research practices, it is yet relatively unknown what leadership approaches are best suited to cultivating a positive culture of research integrity (RI) in HEIs. This small-scale exploratory descriptive study therefore sought to uncover initial findings from within the European context on practices research leaders found to be most effective in leading positive change in this space.
What was the approach?
The design was constructed using semi-structured interviews with five senior research leaders. Countries that were members of the European Network of Research …

Ophthalmic diseases such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), and optic neuritis involve complex molecular and cellular disruptions that challenge current diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models offer a novel lens to analyze these diseases by integrating diverse datasets, identifying patterns, and enabling precision medicine strategies. Over the past decade, applications of AI in ophthalmology have expanded from imaging-based diagnostics to molecular-level modeling, bridging critical gaps in understanding disease mechanisms. This paper systematically reviews the application of AI-driven methods, including reinforcement learning (RL), graph neural networks (GNNs), Bayesian inference, and generative adversarial networks …

Although variation in effect sizes and predicted values among studies of similar phenomena is inevitable, such variation far exceeds what might be produced by sampling error alone. One possible explanation for variation among results is differences among researchers in the decisions they make regarding statistical analyses. A growing array of studies has explored this analytical variability in different fields and has found substantial variability among results despite analysts having the same data and research question. Many of these studies have been in the social sciences, but one small “many analyst” study found similar variability in ecology. We expanded the scope …

Examination Of Protective Mucosal Immune Responses To Viral Sexually Transmitted Infections, Aisha Lee
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Sexually transmitted infections (STI) are a prominent global health issue that affect the sexual and reproductive health of billions worldwide. Viral STIs present a particular challenge due to limited availability of treatment options and their frequent establishment of lifelong infection. One of the most common viral STIs is genital herpes, a recurrent ulcerative disease caused by chronic infection with the human alphaherpesviruses, HSV-1 or HSV-2. Women are particularly susceptible to morbidities of infection ranging from increased risk of HIV-1 acquisition to vertical transfer to neonates, for whom infection can be fatal. Previous efforts to develop a prophylactic vaccine for genital …

Aviation Maintenance Technicians’ Perceptions Of Safety Management System Implementation At Maintenance, Repair, And Overhaul Facilities, Stanley Matthew Losiewicz
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A safety management system (SMS) is challenging for an aviation maintenance facility and even more significant for the aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs) entrusted to perform the work due to organizational, methodological, and consistency issues. The incorporation of an SMS is new in the United States for maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities that operate under the Code of Federal Regulations Part 145. AMTs constitute the bulk of the workers in an MRO. By default, a safety culture and safety consciousness existed in MROs prior to an SMS, and this study was conducted to understand the perceptions of the AMTs in …

Color vision is thought to play a key role in the evolution of animal coloration, while achromatic vision is rarely considered as a mechanism for species recognition. Here we test the hypothesis that brightness vision rather than color vision helps Adelpha fessonia butterflies identify potential mates while their co-mimetic wing coloration is indiscriminable to avian predators. We examine the trichromatic visual system of A. fessonia and characterize its photoreceptors using RNA-seq, eyeshine, epi-microspectrophotometry, and optophysiology. We model the discriminability of its wing color patches in relation to those of its co-mimic, A. basiloides, through A. fessonia and avian eyes. Visual …

Background: Neuregulin 1 (NRG1) fusions are recurrent oncogenic drivers found in multiple solid tumors. NRG1 binds to human epidermal growth factor receptor 3 (HER3), leading to heterodimerization with HER2 and activation of downstream growth and proliferation pathways. The efficacy and safety of zenocutuzumab, a bispecific antibody against HER2 and HER3, in patients with NRG1 fusion-positive solid tumors are unclear.
Methods: In this registrational, phase 2 clinical study, we assigned patients with advanced NRG1 fusion-positive cancer involving any tumor type to receive zenocutuzumab at a dose of 750 mg intravenously every 2 weeks. The primary end point was overall …

Mosaic loss of Y (mLOY) is the most common somatic chromosomal alteration detected in human blood. The presence of mLOY is associated with altered blood cell counts and increased risk of Alzheimer disease, solid tumors, and other age-related diseases. We sought to gain a better understanding of genetic drivers and associated phenotypes of mLOY through analyses of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of a large set of genetically diverse males from the Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program. We show that haplotype-based calling methods can be used with WGS data to successfully identify mLOY events. This approach enabled us to identify differences …

Methods: This retrospective Institutional Review Board -approved study analyzed CT images and clinical data from patients with RMC (n = 87) and ccRCC (n = 93). Patients without contrast-enhanced CT scans obtained before nephrectomy were excluded. A standard volumetric software package (MIM 7.1.4, MIM Software Inc.) was used for contouring, after which 949 radiomics features were extracted with PyRadiomics 3.1.0. Radiomics analysis was then performed with RadAR for differential radiomics …

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the US and globally. The mortality from lung cancer has been declining, due to a reduction in incidence and advances in treatment. Although recent success in developing targeted and immunotherapies for lung cancer has benefitted patients, it has also expanded the complexity of potential treatment options for health care providers. To aid in reducing such complexity, experts in oncology convened a conference (Bridging the Gaps in Lung Cancer) to identify current knowledge gaps and controversies in the diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of various lung cancer scenarios, as described here. Such …

Colorectal cancer tumors start as polyps on the inner lining of the colorectum, in which they are exposed to the mechanics of peristalsis. Our previous work leveraged a custom-built peristalsis bioreactor to demonstrate that colonic peristalsis led to cancer stem cell enrichment in colorectal cancer cells. However, this malignant mechanotransductive response was confined to select colorectal cancer lines that harbored an oncogenic mutation in the Kirsten rat sarcoma virus (KRAS) gene. In this study, we explored the involvement of activating KRAS mutations on peristalsis-associated mechanotransduction in colorectal cancer. Peristalsis enriched cancer stem cell marker Leucine-rich repeat-containing G protein-coupled receptor 5 …

Background/objectives: Rural populations in the US bear a disproportionate burden of cancer mortality, which may be partly due to their elevated tobacco use and the limited receipt of tobacco use interventions in rural healthcare settings. Here, we examine providers' use of the 5As (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, and Arrange), a brief tobacco cessation intervention, with their patients to assess intervention gaps.
Methods: Provider practices in substance use treatment centers (SUTCs) and medical healthcare centers (MHCs), each serving rural and/or medically underserved areas (MUAs) of Texas, were compared. In total, 347 providers from 10 SUTCs (n = 174) and 9 …
