African American Male Reluctance In Teacher Education, Michael L. Williams
African American Male Reluctance In Teacher Education, Michael L. Williams
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
There is a shortage of teachers among rapidly expanding populations of culturally diverse students in K-12 education. Minority students enrolled in public schools have been rising while the number of minority teachers has been falling. Twenty percent of teachers are from ethnic and racial backgrounds, however, schools educate majority-minority populations. What is most troubling, is that the most negatively impacted student of K-12 diverse populations is African-American males. This commentary focuses on the fact that there are initiatives and ideas to close the teacher diversity gap by creating pipelines of African American male teachers. However, the effort it takes to …

Atsubp-2.0: An Integrated Web Server For The Annotation Of Arabidopsis Proteome Subcellular Localization Using Deep Learning, Naveen Duhan, Rakesh Kaundal
Plants, Soils and Climate Student Research
The organization of subcellular components in a cell is critical for its function and studying cellular processes, protein–protein interactions, identifying potential drug targets, network analysis, and other systems biology mechanisms. Determining protein localization experimentally is time-consuming and expensive. Due to the need for meticulous experimentation, validation, and data analysis, computational methods provide a quick and accurate alternative. Arabidopsis thaliana, a beneficial model organism in plant biology, facilitates experimentation and applies to other plants. Predicting its proteins' subcellular localization can improve our understanding of cellular processes and have applications in crop improvement and biotechnology. We propose AtSubP-2.0, an extension of …

Herein, novel polymer composite is fabricated by hybridizing poly (acrylic acid-co-methyl methacrylate) filaments with carboxymethyl cellulose, which efficiently reorients and strictly ties the fibrous chains to form polymeric units of plate-like morphology. This innovative hybrid polymer composite is analyzed using XRD, FT-IR, swelling and contact angle studies, DLS, AFM, and SEM. Removal efficiency of such polymer composite is scrutinized in colored wastewater treatment. Langmuir and pseudo-first-order kinetic models best describe safranine dye removal from wastewater, adopting exothermic adsorption progression with elevated capacity (~ 59.47 mg/g) and accelerated rate (~ 1.06 h− 1). Such polymer composite exhibits persistent removal efficiency of …
Exploring The Connection Between Rna Splicing And Intellectual Disability, Anthony Caputo, Ashleigh E. Schaffer
Exploring The Connection Between Rna Splicing And Intellectual Disability, Anthony Caputo, Ashleigh E. Schaffer
Faculty Scholarship
Intellectual disability (ID) is a broad diagnostic category that encompasses individuals with impaired cognitive ability. While these disorders have heterogeneous causes, recent developments in next-generation sequencing (NGS) are revealing the prevalence of genetic etiologies. In particular, germline mutations in genes that affect RNA splicing are increasingly common causes of ID disorders. Research to elucidate the functional relationship between splicing and neurodevelopment is critical since molecular therapeutics require a nuanced understanding of the pathological mechanism. In this review, we first summarize the trends that have led to the discovery of the RNA splicing–ID relationship, then discuss recent progress and future directions …

The interplay between psychiatric conditions and dermatological disorders is complex and multifaceted, often resulting in significant challenges for both diagnosis and treatment. This narrative review examines associations between specific psychiatric conditions, trichotillomania, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and various dermatological disorders. The present investigation delves into pathophysiological mechanisms, clinical presentations, and management strategies of these comorbid conditions. Psychiatric disorders can exacerbate dermatological conditions through mechanical trauma, medication side effects, and stress-induced exacerbations, while dermatological disorders can lead to significant psychiatric morbidity. The biopsychosocial approach, emphasizing the importance of integrated care involving dermatologists and mental health professionals, is crucial …

Verkhivker
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
A growing body of experimental and computational studies suggests that the cross-neutralization antibody activity against Omicron variants may be driven by the balance and tradeoff between multiple energetic factors and interaction contributions of the evolving escape hotspots involved in antigenic drift and convergent evolution. However, the dynamic and energetic details quantifying the balance and contribution of these factors, particularly the balancing nature of specific interactions formed by antibodies with epitope residues, remain largely uncharacterized. In this study, we performed molecular dynamics simulations, an ensemble-based deep mutational scanning of SARS-CoV-2 spike residues, and binding free energy computations for two distinct groups …

Understanding how the traits of lineages are related to diversification is key for elucidating the origin of variation in species richness. Here, we test whether traits are related to species richness among lineages of trees from all major biogeographical settings of the lowland wet tropics. We explore whether variation in mortality rate, breeding system and maximum diameter are related to species richness, either directly or via associations with range size, among 463 genera that contain wet tropical forest trees. For Amazonian genera, we also explore whether traits are related to species richness via variation among genera in mean species-level range …

Legal Dimensions Of Rights Of Nature Applied In The Context Of The River Plym: River Plym Project Phase 1 Appendix, Jason Lowther
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This review of the literature and legal framing of so-called river rights – loosely understood by reference to the extension of certain characteristics or a particular status upon the river – has been collated in the context of the River Plym-citizenship advocacy project. It aims to examine the legal and policy potential for the attribution of ‘rights’ upon the River Plym. It does so by outlining the challenges facing the waterway, in common with many others, and noting the limitations of the current regulatory systems applied to it. The paper then offers a commentary of legal alternatives to the current …

Motor Pool Selectivity Of Neuromuscular Degeneration In Type I Spinal Muscular Atrophy Is Conserved Between Human And Mouse, Justin C Lee, Wendy K Chung, David J Pisapia, Christopher E Henderson
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is caused by low levels of the survival motor neuron (SMN) protein. Even though SMN is ubiquitously expressed, the disease selectively affects motor neurons, leading to progressive muscle weakness. Even among motor neurons, certain motor units appear more clinically resistant to SMA. To quantitatively survey selective resistance, we studied extensive neuromuscular autopsies of Type I SMA patients and age-matched controls. We found highly divergent degrees of degeneration of neighboring motor units, even within individual cranial nerves or a single anatomical area such as the neck. Examination of a Type I SMA patient maintained on life support …

The Catch Effort Of Spiny Lobster (Panulirus Argus) On South Caicos, British West Indies, Edward J. Burge Jr
The Geographical Bulletin
The spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, which inhabits bank around South Caicos, Turks and Caicos Islands, is the most economically important crustacean in the Caribbean region. In recent years concern regarding overfishing has become prominent. In this study 46 boat loads of specimens, with catches derived from 11 fishing sites were surveyed for data sets including size, sex, and amount from each site. The catch-per-unit effort calculated for each site revealed that individual diving ability and ease of harvest were the greatest determinants for choice of fishing site. Environmental conditions of spiny lobster habitats; such as, water depth and direction of …

Sequential aerial photographs from 1966, 1973, 1984, and 1991 were used to map the number and distribution of beaver ponds in a portion of eastern Glacier National Park, Montana. The most stable ponds were located on deltaic environments. Ponds located on intermittent streams were somewhat less stable. A general equilibrium of pond number and site location exists in the study area throughoutthe 25-year period. This result contrasts with those from historical studies in eastern and central North America, where beaver populations at the turn of the century had probably been much lower than in Glacier National Park.

Naturally occurring proteins have evolved to perform specific biochemical functions, and their amino acid sequences are optimized for those functions rather than for stability. Enhancing protein stability without compromising its function is highly desirable for biotechnological applications, such as vaccine design. Computational protein design algorithms offer a solution by making targeted amino acid changes to the native protein sequence, potentially enhancing stability without the need for the lengthy, labor-intensive, and costly experimental processes typically involved in stabilizing proteins. There are various categories of computational protein design algorithms, and it remains unclear which approach is the most effective. In this study, …

Accurately forecasting food availability is a critical task. One approach involves utilizing remote sensing data, such as satellite images, to observe the health of crop fields using different Vegetation Indices (VI). The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) provides a sound metric to track the “greenness” of crops over time. In this research, we develop statistical models that capture the dynamics of NDVI time series data to make better predictions of its future values. The median NDVI of the pixels of a farm located in Edmunds County, South Dakota, is obtained using imagery from the Landsat 5 and Landsat 8 satellites, …
