Role Of Eye-Tracking Technology And Software Algorithms In Enhancing Adhd Detection And Diagnosis: A Systematic Literature Review, Lauren E. Perkins
Role Of Eye-Tracking Technology And Software Algorithms In Enhancing Adhd Detection And Diagnosis: A Systematic Literature Review, Lauren E. Perkins
Honors College Theses
This systematic literature review explores the role of eye-tracking technology and software algorithms in enhancing the detection and diagnosis of ADHD. ADHD, a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting both children and adults, is traditionally diagnosed through behavioral assessments, which may lack objectivity. Recent studies suggest that eye-tracking, specifically focusing on saccades, fixations, and blink rates, offers the potential for more accurate and objective measures of ADHD. The review examines clinical trials, observational studies, and machine learning research to assess the correlation between ADHD and eye movement patterns. Results indicate that individuals with ADHD exhibit distinct eye movement patterns, which can be quantified …
Deep Learning Applications For Predictive Modeling In Cancer Therapy And Enzyme Encoding, Mengmeng Liu
Deep Learning Applications For Predictive Modeling In Cancer Therapy And Enzyme Encoding, Mengmeng Liu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Predictive modeling has revolutionized computational biology and molecular bioinformatics, enabling significant advancements in cancer therapy and functional enzyme characterization. Despite considerable progress, significant challenges remain in accurately predicting combinational cancer therapies and systematically representing enzyme functions for computational applications. Traditional methods struggle with capturing the complex interactions between drugs and biological networks, as well as representing hierarchical relationships within enzyme classifications. This dissertation addresses these limitations by developing advanced deep learning models tailored to enhance predictive performance in both domains.
First, a data augmentation strategy is introduced to improve anticancer drug synergy prediction by generating pharmacologically relevant drug pairs based …

The extent of wildfires in tundra ecosystems has dramatically increased since the turn of the 21st century due to climate change and the resulting amplified Arctic warming. We simultaneously studied the recovery of vegetation, subsurface soil moisture, and active layer thickness (ALT) post-fire in the permafrost-underlain uplands of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in southwestern Alaska to understand the interaction between these factors and their potential implications. We used a space-for-time substitution methodology with 2017 Landsat 8 imagery and synthetic aperture radar products, along with 2016 field data, to analyze tundra recovery trajectories in areas burned from 1953 to 2017. We found …
The Boltzmann-Enskog Equation With Brownian Forcing, Aurora Wallace
The Boltzmann-Enskog Equation With Brownian Forcing, Aurora Wallace
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Interacting particle systems (IPS) are used to rigorously derive partial differential equations modeling macroscopic behavior given by systems of stochastic differential equa- tions in physics, biology, and other sciences. These systems model the time evolution of n interacting particles with desired dynamics. In the n-system studied here, only two parti- cles may interact at a time (binary collisions). The particles are exchangeable; that is, the ordering of the particles does not play a role, and the interaction between the ith particle and the jth particle models an elastic collision. In this thesis, we use the method of inter- acting particle …
Silent Period Versus Selective Mutism In Young Bilingual Children: A Case Study, Blake Alley
Silent Period Versus Selective Mutism In Young Bilingual Children: A Case Study, Blake Alley
LSU Master's Theses
Intro: It is difficult to distinguish between typical bilingual communication behaviors and those of monolinguals with communication disorders. One difficulty is distinguishing between a silent period and selective mutism. A silent period refers to a relatively brief period of time during which a bilingual refuses to speak in unfamiliar language contexts. Selective mutism refers to a refusal to speak for a long period of time in any language context. The purpose of this study is to disentangle selective mutism from a silent period for a 4 year 10-month-old Spanish English bilingual female.
Methods: This study will include questionnaires, and seven …

“Combined With Homelessness, It’S Just A Nightmare”: A Qualitative Study Exploring How People Experiencing Homelessness Perceive Mental Health And Mental Health Services, Simone Stedmon, Pete Keohane
School of Psychology
People experiencing chronic homelessness (PECH) have relatively poor mental health. Whilst trauma and psychologically informed services are becoming more commonplace and demonstrate positive outcomes, they are still underutilised by PECH. Furthermore, little is known about how PECH understand their own mental health. This qualitative study explores PECH’s perceptions of mental health, mental health services, and any perceived barriers or facilitators to access. Eleven PECH participated in semi-structured interviews. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used to make sense of the transcripts, and five overarching group experiential themes were created: ‘Origins of Mental Health’, ‘Understanding of Mental Health Difficulties’, ‘Experiences of Help-Seeking and …

Prior to COVID-19, pandemic influenza viruses have emerged four times in the previous one hundred years. This includes “Spanish” influenza (H1N1) in 1918, “Asian” influenza (H2N2) in 1957, “Hong Kong” influenza (H3N2) in 1968, and H1N1 “swine” influenza in 2009 (Saunders-Hastings & Krewski, 2016; Taubenberger, 2005). In early May 2024, the first reported human case of avian flu (H5N1) that had also infected cows in the US appeared in the literature (Uyeki et al., 2024). In late August 2024, OSHA released a hazard alert providing information for dairy workers on avian influenza in dairy cattle, together with personal protective equipment …

Transgenerational Impacts Of Covid-19: Exploring The Epigenetic Impacts Of Sars-Cov-2 Infection On Parental Reproductive Health And Offspring Development, Isaac Mckay Stirland
Theses and Dissertations
The mechanisms and consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection, including clinical manifestations, immune response, pathogenicity, long-term sequelae, etc., have been studied in detail following the 2019 pandemic however, very little has been done to explore the interplay between SARS-CoV-2 and host DNA methylation. Given the role of DNA methylation in genetic regulation, genomic imprinting, and induction of transgenerational effects, an understanding of viral interaction(s) with the host methylome is imperative in promoting reproductive and developmental health. Numerous reports describe infections with similar pathogenicity to SARS-CoV-2 and their correlation to altered host tissues at the epigenetic, physiologic, and macroscopic level. These reported epigenetic …

Human-computer interaction technologies have been used since the 1970s but have only gained growing popularity in recent years with new design paradigms. Ongoing research and development in gesture recognition systems with broad application prospects have focused on improving accuracy and real-time performance as well as the robustness of specific machine learning algorithms against environmental conditions. This paper addresses the accuracy enhancement of a novel Fifth Dimension Technologies data-glove-based gesture recognition system using a genetic-algorithm (GA)-trained k-means++-improved radial basis function (RBF) or GK-RBF neural network. First, we analyzed and modeled the sensor distribution in the data glove and proposed joint constraints …

An Edge Awareness-Enhanced Visual Slam Method For Underground Coal Mines, Mu Qi, Liang Xin, Guo Yuanjie, Wang Yuhao, Li Zhanli
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective Underground coal mines commonly exhibit low illuminance, weak textures, and structuralization-induced feature degradation. These scenes lead to challenges of insufficient effective features and high mismatch rates to the visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) system, severely compromising its localization accuracy and robustness. Methods This study proposed an edge awareness-enhanced visual SLAM method. First, an edge-awareness constrained low-illuminance image enhancement module was developed. Specifically, images with clear textures and uniform illumination were obtained using the Retinex algorithm optimized using an adaptive gradient-domain guided filter. This significantly improved feature extraction performance under low and uneven lighting conditions. Second, an edge awareness-enhanced …

Mosquito-borne diseases pose a significant public health threat, particularly in densely populated urban areas. Climate change, urbanization, and global connectivity have fueled the expansion of mosquitoes and their associated pathogens, increasing the disease burden. Harris County, Texas, is among the most vulnerable regions in the United States for mosquito-borne disease outbreaks, underscoring the critical need for localized insights into mosquito population dynamics to inform vector surveillance and control strategies. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the population dynamics of mosquito species in Harris County by exploring their species composition, spatial distribution, and seasonal patterns. Our findings reveal the extensive …

Alterity And Kinship: Co-Writing Posthumanist Speculative Nonfiction With Ai, Jeffrey Bardzell, Maliheh Ghajargar
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
As a response to the climate crisis, scholarly literature has introduced new theoretical perspectives, such as posthumanism, which seek to reimagine the relationships between humans and nonhuman others, including environments, animals, and plants. Reimagining these relationships depends in large part on our ability to engage nonhumans in their otherness, or alterity, but doing so is challenging. Responding to calls throughout posthuman literature for experimental new modes of imaginative encounter with nonhumans, and inspired by speculative traditions from literature to design, we devise a methodology involving “creative experiments” aimed at disrupting, decentering, and disorienting the human-centered thinking that interferes with humans’ …

Dual Enrollment Course Location And Retention In Higher Education, Joanne Krueger
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
College students in the United States begin their higher education journey intending to graduate, but almost 37% do not earn a degree. The problem addressed in this study is that while dual enrollment has been shown to affect graduation rates in higher education positively, it was unclear if the location of dual enrollment courses, high school or college campus, influenced retention at a southwestern United States community college. Using Tinto’s student integration theory, the research question sought to discover the extent to which the location of dual enrollment courses, high school or college campus, predicts student retention to the second …

Fractional Calculus Approach For Learning Unknown Dynamic System, Haowei(Alice) Chen
Fractional Calculus Approach For Learning Unknown Dynamic System, Haowei(Alice) Chen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The rapidly growing interest in data-driven modeling and fractional-order systems highlights a keychallenge in modern science and engineering: capturing long-memory effects and nonlinear behaviors in real-world dynamical processes. Conventional integer-order methods, while powerful, often overlook the history-dependent nature of many phenomena—ranging from viscoelastic materials to anomalous diffusion and hereditary feedback systems. This dissertation addresses that gap by blending fractional calculus with cutting-edge machine learning to create robust, memory-aware modeling and control frameworks.
Beginning with an extension of Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) to fractional-order systems, we introduce Fractional Dynamic Mode Decomposition (F-DMD) as a data-driven tool that leverages Mittag- Leffler functions …
Modeling The Pollution From Latrines In A Low- And Middle-Income Country Setting, Christopher Nenninger
Modeling The Pollution From Latrines In A Low- And Middle-Income Country Setting, Christopher Nenninger
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Latrines are an important sanitation infrastructure that are critical to the United Nations’ effort to end open defecation and achieve the target regarding safely managed sanitation outlined in Sustainable Development Goal #6. This global effort has led to 40,000,000 new users being introduced to improved latrines each year, and this number is expected to increase as the world’s population grows. One of the drawbacks related to these new latrine additions is the potential increase in pollution from hydraulically connected latrine pits to shallow groundwater. This is especially problematic in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where communities are more likely to …

Springscape: The Nature Coast And The Making Of Modern Florida, 1820s-Present, Douglas E. Ponticos
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
According to an oft-repeated tale, the Florida we know today emerged as a dreamscape of tourism, retirement, and suburbanization during the second half of the twentieth century. Growth victimized nature. This dissertation deeply unsettles that story. The history of the Nature Coast exposes not just nature’s agency but its primacy in the development of modern Florida.
Using surveys, maps, census data, personal correspondence, government documents, business records, timber reports, advertising materials, and hydrological research, this dissertation follows time and water across landscapes, into the Upper Floridan Aquifer, and back out again. Each chapter explores a single landscape within the Nature …

Molecular profiling of inner ear neurons has broadened the classification of the primary afferents that support neural coding for hearing and balance. To extend spatiotemporal characterization of auditory and vestibular neuron diversity, we established a transgenic reporter mouse model (Prphp-mCherry), where elements of the peripherin promoter (Prphp) drive expression of the mCherry fluorescent reporter. Type III intermediate filament protein peripherin expression is a marker for type II spiral ganglion neurons (SGN) that innervate the cochlear outer hair cells, and the small diameter 'bouton' vestibular ganglion neurons (VGN) innervating the type II vestibular hair cells. Using Nanopore genome sequencing, the integration …

We continue the critical appraisal of three published case series of 119 COVID-19 patients with hypoxemia, treated in the United States, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria with similar ivermectin-based multidrug treatments, to assess the available evidence supporting a causal relationship between treatment and reduction in hospitalizations and mortality. A narrative review was conducted to assess the Bradford Hill criteria for a causal association. We used a previously proposed refinement of the Bradford Hill criteria that reorganized them into three categories of direct, mechanistic, and parallel evidence. The efficacy of the two most aggressive ivermectin-based multidrug protocols is supported by the Bradford Hill …

Polymer-based microwell platforms have garnered much interest due to their usefulness in culturing and analyzing small quantities of biological cells and spheroids. Existing methods for fabricating polymer microwell arrays involve complex fabrication processes and/or are limited in their ability to create dense arrays of very small (< 50 μm in diameter) microwells. Here, we present a simple and rapid technique for fabricating high-density arrays of microwells ranging from 20 to 160 μm in diameter on a variety of polymer substrates. In this approach, a polymer surface is ablated using a CO2 laser that is rastered over a stainless steel mesh, which serves as a shadow mask. A theoretical laser-polymer interaction model was developed for predicting the microwell volume based on the substrate properties and laser settings. Microwell volumes predicted by the model were within 5.4% of fabricated microwell volumes determined experimentally. Cellulose acetate microwell arrays fabricated using this technique were used to culture Lewis lung carcinoma cells expressing ovalbumin (LLC-OVA), which were maintained for up to 72 h with a negligible (< 5%) loss in viability. As a second proof of principle demonstration, LLC-OVA cells grown in microwell arrays were co-cultured with OT-I T cells and measurements of interferon gamma (IFN-γ), a marker for T cell activation, were performed which revealed a positive correlation between LLC-OVA cell-T cell interaction time and T cell activation. These two in vitro demonstrations showcase the capability of this technique in generating polymer microwell arrays for high-throughput cellular studies, including cell growth dynamics studies and cell interaction studies. Furthermore, we envision that these platforms can be used with different cell types and for other biological applications, such as spheroid formation and single cell analysis, …

Mechanical stretch can activate long-lived changes in fibroblasts, increasing their contractility and initiating phenotypic transformations. This activation, critical to wound healing and procedures such as skin grafting, increases with mechanical stimulus for cells cultured in two-dimensional but is highly variable in cells in three-dimensional (3D) tissue. Here, we show that static mechanical stretch of cells in 3D tissues can either increase or decrease fibroblast activation depending upon recursive cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) feedback and demonstrate control of this activation through integrated in vitro and mathematical models. ECM viscoelasticity, signaling dynamics, and cell mechanics combine to yield a predictable, but nonmonotonic, relationship …
