Trauma Counseling and Resilience

Approximately two-thirds of the United States population experience Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) that are associated with increased risk for negative physical, mental, and behavioral health outcomes. Research on the effects of ACEs is largely conducted and published outside of counseling fields, yet has direct implications for counselors in the conceptualization, assessment, and interventions for a variety of complaints presented by clients across the lifespan and in any treatment setting. Integrating ACEs research into foundational counseling courses can prepare counselors-in-training (CITs) to recognize the impact of ACEs for clients and identify which interventions will promote client wellness. This paper presents an innovative approach for thyroid disease detection leveraging the capabilities of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS). Thyroid diseases are a global health issue with a significant impact on millions of people worldwide. Traditional diagnostic methods, such as blood tests, can be invasive, costly, and time-consuming. In contrast, LIBS provides a quick, non-destructive, and cost-effective approach to illness identification. The study uses LIBS to analyze human hair's elemental composition, revealing elemental signatures linked to thyroid disease through laser ablation and spectral emissions. Promoting sustainable living in the future involves efficiently managing waste to reclaim resources and convert them into new raw materials. There is a global focus on accelerating the utilization and recycling of waste to create valuable biomaterials, driving significant research efforts in this area. In this research, pure silica was isolated from glass waste and used in the manufacture of a type of bioceramic for medical applications. Inequalities by disability status in college outcomes contribute to inequalities throughout adulthood in multiple domains. As the share of students with learning disabilities and/or ADHD increases on college campuses, research is needed on how best to support these undergraduates, both through formal and informal means. We integrate the social and medical models of disability with data on nearly 17,000 young adults in the US, who typically finished high school in 2013, and find that formal-disability-programming relates negatively to college enrollment but has no apparent bearing on college persistence. This study investigated the impact of an academic recovery initiative implemented at a four-year public university to address the high attrition rates among first-year students not making satisfactory academic progress. The study employed quantitative methods to compare retention outcomes and academic progress between students who participated in the program and those who qualified but did not participate over a three-year time frame. Using archival data, including retention rates for both Fall and Spring semesters, cumulative grade point averages, and credit accumulation, the research also examined how demographic factors (race, gender, first-generation status, and Pell Grant eligibility) were associated with program …

Tiny insects are an extremely diverse set of organisms that have important engineering and economic applications. These organisms often fly and readily disperse distances that far exceed their body lengths. The mechanisms behind tiny insect flight are not well understood and present complex kinematics and unintuitive aerodynamics that depart from both fixed-winged mechanisms and larger insects. In addition, their tiny spatial and fast temporal scales make them exceedingly difficult to study, and to date, the field has relied on numerical studies and dynamic scaling. Background

Engineering problems are open-ended and complex, involving technical and social aspects, yet engineering education focuses on technical training and closed-ended problems. To prepare engineering students, curricula should foster sociotechnical thinking—the ability to consider the interplay of technical and social factors during problem solving. Although educational interventions in this area show promise, further insight into the benefits of interdisciplinary interventions is warranted, particularly with treatment and control group designs.

Purpose

We examine the effect of a Humanities-Informed Engineering Projects (HIEP) course on students' sociotechnical thinking development.
