Literature As A Tool For The Introduction Of Mental Health To Children, Kira Ott May 2025

Literature As A Tool For The Introduction Of Mental Health To Children, Kira Ott

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In childhood, literature is a quintessential learning tool, so it is imperative it is used in the introduction of mental health. Around the ages of seven to nine children begin to become aware of their own needs and comprehend others' perspectives (Short et al., 2017, p. 13). At this time non-fiction books can be used to present information when it is organized, accessible, and informative (Short et al., 2017, p. 13). This can be effectively paired with fiction which can help contextualize abstract ideas, and develop self-monitoring skills (Gunawardena, 2023; Short et al., 2017). Mental health, which encompasses thoughts, feelings, …

The Impact Of Emdr Therapy On Past Suicidal Ideation: Lived Experiences Of Young Adults, Lindsey Faehnrich

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This study explores the effectiveness of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy in reducing suicidal ideation and improving mental health outcomes among college-attending young adults (ages 18–24) with a history of trauma. EMDR is a body-based psychotherapy designed to alleviate distressing thoughts and trauma. It gained attention for its positive impact on PTSD and has more recently been applied to other mental health disorders. The literature review highlights risk factors including trauma, mental health disorders, suicidal ideation, and EMDR. The methods detail a phenomenological approach, interviewing four young adults who underwent EMDR and experienced past suicidal ideation. This provided …

Determining The Causation Of Microphthalmia In Cannabidiol Treated Zebrafish Embryos, Nicolas Zuniga May 2025

Determining The Causation Of Microphthalmia In Cannabidiol Treated Zebrafish Embryos, Nicolas Zuniga

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid derived from the plant cannabis sativa. Multiple studies on CBD show that it is used as an anti-psychotic, an anti-inflammatory for pain relief, and an antinausea agent. The Agriculture Improvement Act (2018) played a role in removing hemp and hemp derivatives like CBD from being categorized as a Schedule I substance, which led to recreational usage in America. In 2003, there was an increase in cannabinoid consumption during pregnancy to alleviate morning sickness along with distress. Prior studies on CBD-treated zebrafish embryos have demonstrated phenotypes of microphthalmia, scoliosis, fewer neuronal connections, and less motor neuron …

What We Talk About When We Talk About First-Generation Students: Exploring Definitions In Use On College And University Websites, Danielle E. Maurici-Pollock, Rebecca Stallworth, Sasha Khan

Publications

First-generation students (FGS) are a population that has received increasing attention, but the term has been inconsistently defined. Such inconsistency creates challenges not only for research, but for students themselves, many of whom may find they meet the FGS definition in one institutional context, but not another. In this study, we analyze how the term first-generation student is defined on the public websites of colleges and universities in the United States and Canada and discuss implications for students and academic libraries.

The penstemons are ornamental annual flowering plants native to the Intermountain West and Rocky Mountains and commonly used for urban landscaping. Elite commercial penstemons are generally susceptible to abiotic stresses, including drought, root rot, cold, and high salinity. Firecracker penstemon (Penstemon eatonii), however, is much more tolerant to these stresses than most elite cultivars. Importantly, firecracker penstemon has been reported to hybridize with many other penstemons and therefore provides the opportunity to develop more tolerant elite cultivars through strategic crossing. To facilitate the study and utilization of firecracker penstemon, we sequenced and annotated the genome of a P. …

Digital Twins, Synthetic Patient Data, And In-Silico Trials: Can They Empower Paediatric Clinical Trials?, Mohan Pammi, Prakesh S Shah, Liu K Yang, Joseph Hagan, Nima Aghaeepour, Josef Neu

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Randomised controlled trials are the gold standard to assess the effectiveness and safety of clinical interventions; however, many paediatric trials are discontinued early due to challenges in patient enrolment. Hence, most paediatric clinical trials suffer from lack of adequate power. Additionally, trials are expensive and might expose patients to unproven therapies. Alternatives to overcome these issues using virtual patient data—namely, digital twins, synthetic patient data, and in-silico trials—are now possible due to rapid advances in digital health-care tools and interventions. However, such digital innovations have been rarely used in paediatric trials. In this Viewpoint, we propose using virtual patient data …

Temporal Dynamics Of Bmp/Nodal Ratio Drive Tissue-Specific Gastrulation Morphogenesis, Alyssa A Emig, Megan Hansen, Sandra Grimm, Cristian Coarfa, Nathan D Lord, Margot Kossmann Williams

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Anteroposterior elongation of the vertebrate body plan is driven by convergence and extension (C&E) gastrulation movements in both the mesoderm and neuroectoderm, but how or whether molecular regulation of C&E differs between tissues remains an open question. Using a zebrafish explant model of anteroposterior axis extension, we show that C&E of the neuroectoderm and mesoderm can be uncoupled ex vivo, and that morphogenesis of individual tissues results from distinct morphogen signaling dynamics. Using precise temporal manipulation of BMP and Nodal signaling, we identify a critical developmental window during which high or low BMP/Nodal ratios induce neuroectoderm- or mesoderm-driven C&E, respectively. …

Patient-centered outcomes, including patient-reported outcomes (PROs), are increasingly important in healthcare and research, though their use in rare diseases remains limited. In disorders with significant phenotypic variation, selecting appropriate outcome measures is crucial to ensuring the relevance of clinical trials for the patient population. Phosphomannomutase 2-CDG (PMM2-CDG) involves a complex genotype-phenotype relationship, making it challenging to predict clinical outcomes and select reliable measures for clinical trials. Caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in the PMM2, PMM2-CDG displays highly variable clinical severity, underscoring the need for personalized outcome measures. One such so far unexplored, individualized approach is Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS), which …

Over the last 20 years, research into the Meibomian glands of the eyelids has increased exponentially and is now widely recognized as a field of research. It is all the more astonishing that knowledge about another type of gland in the eyelids, the Moll glands or ciliary glands, has almost stagnated and there has been little to almost no progress, even though this type of gland as a whole takes up a relatively large volume in the upper and lower eyelids. There is not much information about the namesake Moll or the function of the glands although these are listed …

The Central Role Of Cytochrome P450 Reductase (Cpr) In Hyperoxic Lung Injury, Deven Narke, Bhagavatula Moorthy

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Introduction: Hyperoxic lung injury results from excessive supplemental oxygen therapy in conditions such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in adults. This review explores the role of cytochrome P450 reductase (CPR) in hyperoxic lung injury.

Areas covered: Hyperoxia induces the production of reactive oxygen species in excessive amounts, overwhelming the body's antioxidant defenses and exacerbating lung injury in ARDS/BPD. This review examines the differential roles of CPR-dependent enzymes in the context of hyperoxic lung injury. Additionally, we highlight the potential of targeting CPR to study mechanisms of lung injury and leverage gene-editing technologies …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Objectives: Circulating Epstein-Barr virus antibodies (EBV-Ab) are used as a biomarker of chronic stress in high-income settings, but their relevance in environments with a high burden of infectious disease, nutritional constraints, and limited resources is less clear. We investigated EBV-Ab as a biomarker of adversity in a setting where local ecology and economy may affect immune development differently than in wealthy countries.

Methods: We measured EBV-Ab in finger-prick dried blood spots collected from Indigenous Shuar (n = 433) and non-Indigenous Colonos (n = 84) ranging from < 1 to 87 years old in Amazonian Ecuador. For a subset of adults (≥ 15 years, n = 210), we collected socioeconomic information (income, education, and occupation) and assessed household-level market integration. We determined the most important predictors of EBV-Ab for adults and children using multi-model averaging of linear regression models.

Results: Male children (< 15 years) had lower EBV-Ab than female children (model averaged β [SE]: -0.238 [0.066]). For adults, Shuar had higher EBV-Ab than Colonos (model averaged β [SE]: 0.235 [0.113]), and high systolic blood pressure was an important predictor of elevated EBV-Ab (model averaged β [SE]: 0.088 [0.047]). Individuals who reported unpaid domestic work as their primary occupation had higher EBV-Ab than agricultural workers (model averaged β [SE]: 0.302 [0.113]). Individuals living in houses with more market-sourced infrastructure had lower EBV-Ab (model averaged β [SE]: -0.088 [0.068]).

Conclusions: Circulating EBV-Ab may capture context-specific aspects of socioecological adversity …

Genome-wide association studies have been remarkably successful in identifying genetic variants associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), demonstrating a strong genetic component largely driven by common variants. However, progress in translating these genetic findings into a deeper understanding of disease mechanisms and new therapies has been slow. Slow progress in this area can be attributed to limited knowledge of the functional impact of AMD-associated non-coding variants on gene function, the molecular mechanisms and cell types underlying disease. This review offers a comprehensive overview of functional genomics approaches to uncover the genetic, epigenetic, cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying AMD and outlines …

Measuring Motive: A Systematic Review Of The Cyber Aggression Typology Questionnaire, Alexandre N. Urben May 2025

Measuring Motive: A Systematic Review Of The Cyber Aggression Typology Questionnaire, Alexandre N. Urben

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Cyber aggression is a widespread social problem with serious psychological impacts on both perpetrators and victims. Eighty-five percent of Americans say they use the Internet daily, and thirty-one percent of Americans report they go online “almost constantly”. Forty-one percent of Americans say they have experienced some form of online harassment. While there is a great deal of research across various disciplines about the frequency of cyber aggression, who perpetrates it, and what traits are associated with it, motivations for cyber aggression are less understood. Understanding the motivations involved is an important factor in preempting and countering cyber aggression. The Cyber …

Postoperative atrial fibrillation (poAF) is AF occurring days after surgery, with a prevalence of 33% among patients undergoing open-heart surgery. The degree of postoperative inflammation correlates with poAF risk, but less is known about the cellular and molecular mechanisms driving postoperative atrial arrhythmogenesis. We performed single-cell RNA-seq comparing atrial nonmyocytes from mice with and without poAF, which revealed infiltrating CCR2+ macrophages to be the most altered cell type. Pseudotime trajectory analyses identified Il-6 as a gene of interest driving in macrophages, which we confirmed in pericardial fluid collected from human patients after cardiac surgery. Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDGs) comprise a large heterogeneous group of metabolic conditions caused by defects in glycoprotein and glycolipid glycan assembly and remodeling, a fundamental molecular process with wide-ranging biological roles. Herein, we describe bi-allelic UGGT1 variants in fifteen individuals from ten unrelated families of various ethnic backgrounds as a cause of a distinctive CDG of variable severity. The cardinal clinical features of UGGT1-CDG involve developmental delay, intellectual disability, seizures, characteristic facial features, and microcephaly in the majority (9/11 affected individuals for whom measurements were available). The more severely affected individuals display congenital heart malformations, variable skeletal abnormalities including …

Background

Technique survival, also reported with negative connotations as technique failure or transfer from peritoneal dialysis to haemodialysis, has been identified by patients, caregivers and health professionals as a critically important outcome to be reported in all trials. However, there is wide variation in how peritoneal dialysis technique survival is defined, measured and reported, leading to difficulty in comparing or consolidating results.

Methods

We conducted an online international consensus workshop to establish a core outcome measure of technique survival. Discussions were analysed thematically.

Results

Fifty-five participants including 14 patients and caregivers from 13 countries took part in facilitated breakout discussions …

Osteoarthritis is the third most rapidly growing health condition associated with disability, after dementia and diabetes1. By 2050, the total number of patients with osteoarthritis is estimated to reach 1 billion worldwide2. As no disease-modifying treatments exist for osteoarthritis, a better understanding of disease aetiopathology is urgently needed. Here we perform a genome-wide association study meta-analyses across up to 489,975 cases and 1,472,094 controls, establishing 962 independent associations, 513 of which have not been previously reported. Using single-cell multiomics data, we identify signal enrichment in embryonic skeletal development pathways. We integrate orthogonal lines of evidence, including …

Cortical Structure In Nodes Of The Default Mode Network Estimates General Intelligence, Abhinav Yadav, Archana Purushotham

Introduction: A growing number of studies implicate functional brain networks in intelligence, but it is unclear if network nodal structure relates to intelligence.

Methods: Using MRI, we studied the relationship of the general intelligence factor (g) with cortical thickness (CT), local gyrification index (LGI), and voxel-based morphometry in the nodes of the default mode network (DMN) and task-positive network (TPN) in a cohort of 44 young, healthy adults. Employing a novel strategy, we performed repeated analyses with multiple sets of g estimates to remove false positives.

Results: CT and LGI in medial and temporal nodes of the DMN were reliably …
