Towards The Performance Characterization Of A Robotic Multimodal Diagnostic Imaging System, George Papaioannou, Christos Mitrogiannis, Mark Schweitzer, Nikolaos Michailidis, Maria Pappa, Pegah Khosravi, Apostolos Karantanas, Sean Starling, Christian Ruberg

Publications and Research

Characterizing imaging performance requires a multidisciplinary approach that evaluates various interconnected parameters, including dosage optimization and dynamic accuracy. Radiation dose and dynamic accuracy are challenged by patient motion that results in poor image quality. These challenges are more prevalent in the brain/cardiac pediatric patient imaging, as they relate to excess radiation dose that may be associated with various complications. Scanning vulnerable pediatric patients ought to eliminate anesthesia due to critical risks associated in some cases with intracranial hemorrhages, brain strokes, and congenital heart disease. Some pediatric imaging, however, requires prolonged scanning under anesthesia. It can often be a laborious, suboptimal …

Microplastic Concentrations Within The Winyah Bay River Plume, Daniel C. Haughie May 2025

Microplastic Concentrations Within The Winyah Bay River Plume, Daniel C. Haughie

Honors Theses

In the last 20 years, microplastics have become a significant concern for ecosystem and public health. The buoyancy and method of introduction makes river plumes a likely repository for microplastic accumulation. A river plume is a bulge of fresher water that expands radially from the mouth of an estuary, with distinct lines called fronts at the leading edge of the plume. A front is a region of convergence between the fresher plume water and the saltier ocean water. The density differences between the two water masses may create an easily identifiable color and salinity gradient. These fronts often allow for …

Functional Devices Based On Freestanding 2d Materials, Shijue Xu May 2025

Functional Devices Based On Freestanding 2d Materials, Shijue Xu

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted extensive attention in the field of nanoelectronics due to their atomic-scale thickness, high surface-to-volume ratio, tunable electronic properties, and compatibility with low-temperature processing. These characteristics make them highly suitable for the construction of emerging device architectures, particularly in both ionic and electronic devices.

In this work, we investigate the application of 2D materials in two distinct classes of devices: ionically-driven memristors and electronically-dominated metal–semiconductor contacts. For the memristor study, we fabricate heterostructure-based resistive switching devices using h-BN and WSe2 as active layers. These 2D material-based memristors exhibit stable power consumption loops and high linearity …

Froggy People: Anthropomorphism And Slice-Of-Life In Autobiographical Comics, Maddie Baker May 2025

Froggy People: Anthropomorphism And Slice-Of-Life In Autobiographical Comics, Maddie Baker

MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture

This essay explores how the following three comics categories overlap and interact with one another: slice-of-life, anthropomorphic, and autobiographical. I search for reasons why comic makers would choose to tell their own daily life stories using animal avatars rather than their own faces. While each of these three categories has been studied extensively individually, I hope to find additional insights by observing how comic makers employ the genres together as storytelling devices. Each category has unique narratological power which impacts the reader’s experience. For example, anthropomorphism affects how the author and reader internalize and relate to characters. Slice-of-life comics are …

Adler, Asterios, & Maus, Crystal Ganatra May 2025

Adler, Asterios, & Maus, Crystal Ganatra

MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture

Adler, Asterios, & Maus examines how small visual decisions in illustrations make up a language. And when the dialect changes from the predominant one in a graphic novel, something novel happens. A scene or specific quality gets the spotlight. It also explores how these visuals tie to Adlerian psychology and El Refaeian ideas on autobiography, behavior, and emotion. It identifies through two interesting grpahic novels- Asterios Polyp by David Mazzuchelli and Maus by Art Spiegelman- how these ideas can be used to understand ourselves. It intensely zeroes in on specific moments of visual language shift. Some of these change range …

Trans-Dimensional Coexistence: I No Longer Hold You But I See You, Keren Guo

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

We live in a world where impermanence is the only lasting truth. Fleeting moments and fading relationships reoccur in our lives, but the journey continues, nonetheless. My practice projects my individuality onto universal connections between humans through depicting worlds full of colorful imaginations, experiences, creatures, and figures. I draw inspiration from work by Inka Essenhigh, Yoko Ono, and Pipilotti Rist, studying contemporary artists’ use of colors, materials, and audience participation to make an array of works from paintings to an interactive installation as my final work. Additionally, I look into historical sources about mythical creatures and religious beliefs to enhance …

Shell Quilt: Piecing Memory Through Quilting, Collage, And Printmaking, Grace M. Woodruff

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

Shell Quilt is a mixed media quilt and accompanying book which collect an amalgamation of found, hand dyed, and printed fabric pieces. This project serves as a visual tether and inquiry into my late grandmother Sylvia’s life and a way of piecing together memories of my time with her. As a conceptual frame for my thesis project, Shell Quilt, I have looked to the process of femmage, a term initially coined by Miriam Schapiro and Melissa Meyer, which I interpret as a portmanteau of feminism and collage. Through the lens of femmage, I explore the processes of collage, quilting, …

Expression Of Genes From Pseudomonas 20ei1 For Possible Control Of Fungi And Cyanobacteria, Brianna Glees, W. Scott Grayburn

Honors Capstones

Some fungi, such as Aspergillus, can cause significant economic losses in food production and produce mycotoxins that are carcinogenic to humans. Similarly, certain cyanobacteria, which are often present in harmful algal blooms, can kill animals and also produce toxins that are harmful to humans. The goal of this study was to determine if living Pseudomonas 20ei1 bacteria and their cell-free extracts inhibit the growth of Aspergillus nidulans and cyanobacteria. Plating experiments were performed to assess growth inhibition. In plating assays, both live P. 20ei1 bacteria and their cell-free extracts showed inhibition of A. nidulans and cyanobacteria. However, the cell-free …

The State Of The Carbon Capture And Sequestration Industry In California In 2024: Challenges And Policy Solutions, Noah Jackson

Pepperdine Policy Review

Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) is the process of capturing CO2 from an above-ground carbon source, transporting it to a sequestration well, and permanently sinking it deep underground. Despite California’s dependency on CCS to reach carbon neutrality, not one CCS project is operational yet in the state. This paper looks at the history and development of the CCS industry. It explores the following research questions: How do permitting, financing, CO2 transportation, and property rights affect the pace and scale of carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) development as a carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solution? Then, what policy changes are necessary as …

Navigating High Seas Jurisdictional Challenges: Recommendations For Addressing Legal Authority Of Incidents On Cruise Vessels, Yichi Zhang

Pepperdine Policy Review

This paper examines the current investigation and jurisdiction challenges of cruise crimes on the high seas. The jurisdiction is split into four conditions, including flag state, victim state, suspect state, and coastal state. These conditions face systematic complications and a lack of conductive efficiency that increases the rate of criminals fleeing, bringing challenges from the jurisdiction, social insecurity, and international relations perspectives. This research assesses the current criminal cruise risks on international waters and the upward trend of perpetration reports, including missing individuals, sexual assaults, and murder cases. This article also introduces three alternative policies: sharing incident information and offering …

Experimental Evaluation Of Resource Allocation To Organelles In Eukaryotic Cells, Ronan Hanley May 2025

Experimental Evaluation Of Resource Allocation To Organelles In Eukaryotic Cells, Ronan Hanley

Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses

Among the hallmarks of the eukaryotic cell is its organization into spatially defined sub-compartments known as organelles. Organelles provide optimized environments for otherwise incompatible biochemical reactions within the cell. It has been shown that there is significant variation in the properties of organelles in a cell, and that cells have access to a limited pool of resources that they can allocate to organelles. This begs the question: by what principles do cells dictate how resources are allocated? To begin to explore this question, we look at resource allocation in S. cerevisiaefrom two perspectives. First, we use a combination of …

Soft, Adhesive Dry Electrodes For Improved Electrophysiological Signal Acquisition With Motion Tolerance And Long-Term-Recoverability, Ryan Andersen

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Soft electronic devices and sensors have seen substantial interest devoted to them for the purpose of recording and analyzing various electrophysiological signals including for the use of electrocardiography (ECG), electromyography (EMG), and electroencephalography (EEG). Dry electrodes specifically have enormous potential compared to traditional commercial electrodes for long-term, real-time monitoring of biopotential activity. Gel-based commercial electrodes have notable drawbacks such as limited flexibility, skin irritation that decreases comfort, inconsistent signal quality due to poor conformal contact, and degraded signal quality over long-term monitoring due to drying out.

Herein, we report a soft, adhesive dry electrode that utilizes chemical additives to promote …

This thesis tackles the challenges of designing effective, scalable digital mental health care solutions by integrating psychological research with human-computer interaction (HCI) principles. An exploration of self-care technologies (SCTs) for mental health is conducted to highlight challenges to comparative analysis, like fragmented research outcomes. Two research questions are posed to investigate how mental health interventions can be designed to be effective and overcome practical challenges to implementation. A theoretical framework in clinical psychology is adapted to bridge the gap between psychology and HCI. A methodology for conducting standardized, structured comparative analysis of mental health interventions is identified. The identified method …

Held Together, Falling Apart: Classical Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome As Embodied Abstraction, Chloe S. Macaulay May 2025

Held Together, Falling Apart: Classical Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome As Embodied Abstraction, Chloe S. Macaulay

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

Reconciling life within a body defined by fragility, I create worlds of connectivity to embody and refigure Classical Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (cEDS)–a connective-tissue disorder causing hypermobile joints, fragile skin, easy bruising, and poor wound healing. Large-format oil paintings employ a multi-layer method, layering paint like skin to reform the body onto canvas. Drawing on Surrealist automatic processes and theories of unconscious production, my methodology combines intuitive, process-based mark-making with traditional oil painting techniques and experimental material practices to subvert and reassert artistic agency, weaving between control and surrender. Scientific imagery, particularly SHG imaging of cEDS collagen tissue, informs a visual language …

Threading The Void, Jessica Hut May 2025

Threading The Void, Jessica Hut

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

The contemporary architectural environment is commonly characterized by fragmented and underutilized space. These areas, often overlooked, hold the potential to be reclaimed in a way that activates our spaces through integration and minimal intervention. By deriving the design logic from organic forms found in nature, these structures are able to embrace logic and reason that has had centuries to optimize itself. Learning through this natural wisdom, we can make use of the underutilized spaces in our built environment. Allowing a shift away from static, isolated objects while also blurring boundaries in a way that critiques the spatial organization of contemporary …

The Role Of The Cgas-Sting Sensing Pathway In Hiv-1 And Sars-Cov-2 Infections, Jenna Eve Eschbach May 2025

The Role Of The Cgas-Sting Sensing Pathway In Hiv-1 And Sars-Cov-2 Infections, Jenna Eve Eschbach

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Human immunodeficiency virus type I (HIV-1) and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are the causative agents of two unique pandemics. For a successful replication cycle to occur, viruses need to strategically outmaneuver host cell defenses. The innate immune system is the first line of defense against viruses and other pathogens. Host pattern recognition receptors detect viral nucleic acids and initiate signaling cascades that culminate in the expression of interferon (IFN) and transcriptional upregulation of antiviral interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs). This dissertation examines the involvement of the innate immune response during early, post-entry steps of HIV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 infection. During …

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections rank among the most prevalent communicable diseases of humans, yet detection of these parasites is mostly restricted to identifying active infection through fecal examinations. Currently, there are no commercial diagnostic tools to identify a prior whipworm or hookworm exposure, and the few serological assays for roundworm infection have not been well validated for crossreactivity or infections in humans. Such diagnostic restrictions limit the range of scientific and clinical questions that surround STH exposures and their implicated relationship to chronic diseases, such as autoimmunity, allergy, and cancer. The goal of this investigation was to evaluate the diagnostic …

Partially Supervised Reinforcement Learning For Gps-Denied Navigation, Ethan Weilheimer May 2025

Partially Supervised Reinforcement Learning For Gps-Denied Navigation, Ethan Weilheimer

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Navigating dynamic environments is a key challenge for autonomous agents, yet most existing research focuses on 3D settings or settings where the agent has full access to relevant semantics. In this work, we propose a learning framework for aerial navigation in the presence of changing dynamics and limited positional information. Specifically, we consider a drone navigation task where a drone at one time has access to GPS location information, which it has now lost and needs to navigate in the same area but at a future time with no GPS signal and differing transition dynamics. To address this, we introduce …

Adaptive Noise Estimation And Denoising With Deep Learning For Nmr Spectroscopy, Naveen Asokan May 2025

Adaptive Noise Estimation And Denoising With Deep Learning For Nmr Spectroscopy, Naveen Asokan

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful analytical technique widely used for molecular structure elucidation in chemistry, biology, and medicine. However, spectral accuracy is often degraded by noise—particularly in low acquisition time settings—resulting in reduced resolution and obscured chemical features. While traditional noise reduction techniques such as signal averaging can improve spectral quality, they require longer acquisition times, limiting their utility in real-time and high-throughput applications.

This thesis presents a deep learning-based denoising framework designed to enhance the quality of complex-valued NMR spectra. The proposed model, built upon a U-Net architecture, incorporates both real and imaginary components of the …
