Existence Of Traveling Waves In A Predator-Prey Invasion Model With Nonlocal Dispersal And Delayed Effects In Dispersal, Austin Simms
Existence Of Traveling Waves In A Predator-Prey Invasion Model With Nonlocal Dispersal And Delayed Effects In Dispersal, Austin Simms
Theses and Dissertations
We investigate the existence and stability of traveling wave solutions in a predator--prey population model that incorporates both nonlocal dispersal and time-delayed interactions. The problem arises when species distributions and feeding or reproduction processes do not respond instantaneously, but rather exhibit lags in space and time. Our aim is to understand how these delays and nonlocal effects impact the wavefront speed and the eventual establishment of a predator population in previously prey-dominated regions. To accomplish this, we derive a PDE--integro--delay system from ecological considerations of prey self-regulation, predator ratio dependence, and jump-type dispersal kernels. We then employ a traveling wave …

Linking Geographic Distribution And Niche Through Estimation Of Niche Density, Tad Dallas, Cleber Ten Caten

- The availability of suitable niche space constrains where species can occur geographically. This tie between niche space and geographic space is crucial when estimating species geographic distributions in a changing climate. However, specific combinations of climatic conditions may be overrepresented in geographic space, highlighting the potential disconnect between climatic niche area and geographic range size.
- We develop a niche density estimator that accounts for the geographic availability of climatic niche space, relate this to traditional estimates of niche area and explore how these niche estimates are related to species geographic range size.
- To do this, we use data on over …

Mangrove forests are vital for ecosystem services and coastal management but face stressors from anthropogenic activities and climate change. This study estimates the extent and afforestation potential of mangroves along the Egyptian Red Sea coast from 1984 to 2022 using NDVI derived from Landsat-5 and Sentinel-2 data in Google Earth Engine. Aboveground biomass (AGB), belowground biomass (BGB), carbon (C) stock, and CO2 sequestration potential were evaluated using Sentinel-2 and elevation data. Future afforestation suitability (2020–2050) under SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios was assessed with the MaxEnt model. Mangrove area increased from 0.95 km2 in 1984 to 1.46 km2 …

CISD1, an outer mitochondrial membrane iron-sulfur cluster protein, regulates intracellular iron levels, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dynamics, playing critical roles in cellular bioenergetics and redox homeostasis. Although CISD1 has been identified as a prognostic biomarker in specific cancers, its broader implications in tumorigenesis, cancer progression, and immunotherapy remain unclear. Given the heterogeneity of cancer and the need for robust biomarkers across cancers, this study conducts the first comprehensive pan-cancer analysis of CISD1 by evaluating its roles in cancer and treatment. We obtained and analyzed data from databases including TCGA, GTEx, THPA, GEPIA2.0, SangerBox, cBioPortal, TIMER2.0, CAMOIP, DAVID, SRPLOT, and TISIDB. …

The therapeutic landscape in ALL has changed dramatically over the last decade. Allogeneic blood or marrow transplantation (AlloBMT) has also evolved and remains an important option for consolidation. We assessed the interplay between these factors by analyzing the outcomes of 251 adult ALL (214 B and 37 T ALL) patients undergoing alloBMT with post-transplantation cyclophosphamide (PTCy) across two eras: 2008-2014 (ERA1) and 2015-2022 (ERA2). ERA1 patients were younger (median age 45.5 vs. 50, p=0.03), less likely to have an HCT-CI ≥4 (9% vs. 21%, p=0.01), more likely to have MRD by flow cytometry (20% vs. 9%, p=0.01) and receive myeloablative …

24-hour biological rhythms are essential to maintain physiological homeostasis. Disruption of these rhythms increases the risks of multiple diseases. Biological rhythms are known to have a genetic basis formed by core clock genes, but how individual genetic variation shapes the oscillating transcriptome and contributes to human chronophysiology and disease risk is largely unknown. Here, we mapped interactions between temporal gene expression and genotype to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) contributing to rhythmic gene expression. These newly identified QTLs were termed as rhythmic QTLs (rhyQTLs), which determine previously unappreciated rhythmic genes in human subpopulations with specific genotypes. Functionally, rhyQTLs and their …

Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is a common cause of autism spectrum symptoms. The genetic mutation results in multiple molecular alterations that are hypothesized to negatively impact neural circuit development although the nature of any functional neural dynamic consequences remain unclear. Therefore, the characteristics of hippocampal-prefrontal (H-PFC) network dysfunction were investigated in a rat model of FXS. FMR-KO and control rats underwent behavioral tests assessing sociability, memory, and anxiety to validate and replicate previously recognized deficits. Single-unit electrophysiology in the H-PFC circuit during exploration was used to measure patterns of action potential firing that were then compared between groups using generalized …

Music And Cognition: How To Keep The Brain On Beat, Rylen Sakamoto
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Music, as the conversion of words and sounds into expressive art, has been often used as a form of catharsis or emotional regulation. While research on common mood outcomes from music exists, further examination is necessary, as this knowledge, once fully understood, can be applied beyond music therapy, and be utilized to enhance our cognitive efficiency. Current research includes Music Mood Theory, which suggests that music has a meaningful impact on our moods, which correlate with behaviors such as maintaining tempo and harmony (Hu, 2010). The purpose of this study was to establish a deeper perspective on the impact music …

BACKGROUND: Social network data are essential and informative for public health research and implementation as they provide details on individuals and their social context. For example, health information and behaviors, such as HIV-related prevention and care, may disseminate within a network or across society. By harmonizing egocentric and digital networks, researchers may construct a sociocentric-like "fuzzy" network based on a subgroup of the population.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to generate a more complete sociocentric-like "fuzzy" network by harmonizing alternative sources of egocentric and digital network data to examine relationships between participants in the Neighborhoods and Networks (N2) cohort study. Further, we …

OBJECTIVE: Hospital setting is postulated to be a key driver of cost variation for neurosurgical procedures. Limitations in contemporary costing methodologies have led to the development of time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC). This study applies TDABC to anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) to compare intraoperative costs at quaternary care centers versus satellite hospitals affiliated with the same health network.
METHODS: Nine hundred and fifty-eight ACDF cases performed at two quaternary care hospitals (n = 806) and six satellite hospitals (n = 152) were reviewed. Process maps were created to map the intraoperative episode, and TDABC methodology was used to calculate …

Chronic hyperglycemia is a major risk factor for glomerular or retinal microangiopathy and cardiovascular complications of type 1 diabetes (T1D). At the interface of genetics and environment, dynamic epigenetic changes associated with hyperglycemia may unravel some of the mechanisms contributing to these T1D complications. In this study, blood samples were collected from 112 young patients at T1D diagnosis and 3 years later in average. Whole genome-wide bisulfite sequencing was used to measure blood DNA methylation changes of about 28 million CpGs at single base resolution over this time. Chronic hyperglycemia was estimated every 3-4 months by HbA1c measurement. Linear regressions …

The Ethical Imperative Of The Renewal Of Virtue Within The Moral Community Of Catholic Healthcare, Amanda Altobell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Catholic healthcare is one of the largest nonprofit organizations and providers in the United States, offering medical care to many diverse communities. The fundamental mission of Catholic healthcare is to bring about Christ’s healing ministry and live out the fundamental principle of caring for the vulnerable in pursuit of the common good. However, there have been many missteps, not only due to a more polarized and secular community but also to scandals and conflict due to previous hierarchical and rules-based anthropology that often misses the person's lived experience. Therefore, this dissertation will argue that for Catholic healthcare to survive the …

T cell activation requires a substantial increase in NAD+ production, often exceeding the capacity of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). To investigate how T cells adapt to this metabolic challenge, we generate T cell-specific ADP/ATP translocase-2 knockout (Ant2-/-) mice. Loss of Ant2, a crucial protein mediating ADP/ATP exchange between mitochondria and cytoplasm, induces OXPHOS restriction by limiting ATP synthase activity, thereby impeding NAD+ regeneration. Interestingly, Ant2-/- naïve T cells exhibit enhanced activation, proliferation and effector functions compared to wild-type controls. Metabolic profiling reveals that these T cells adopt an activated-like metabolic program with increased mitobiogenesis and anabolism. Lastly, pharmacological inhibition of ANT …

An Analysis Of The Armorettes’ Mission To Help The Atlanta Lgbtq+ Community, Edwin Hernandez
Master's Theses
The Armorettes are a self-proclaimed camp drag troupe that have been performing in the Atlanta drag scene since 1979. First formed as a cheer group for a softball team associated with The Armory, a well known gay bar at the time, they quickly added drag performance and charity work to their name. The group came to be as the HIV/AIDS epidemic began affecting Atlanta. Atlanta was hit hard by the disease. Several comorbid factors contributed to the disproportionate numbers seen in the city beginning in the 1980s. They quickly took on the mission of raising money for charities and organizations …

Cancer genomic studies have identified frequent mutations in subunits of the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex, including SMARCA4 in nonsmall cell lung cancer with a frequency of up to 33% in advanced-stage disease, making it the most frequently mutated complex. We and others have identified SMARCA2 to be synthetic lethal to SMARCA4, indicating that SMARCA2 is a high-value therapeutic target. Here, we disclose the discovery and characterization of potent, selective, and orally bioavailable cereblon-based SMARCA2 PROTACs. Biochemically, we showed that YDR1 and YD54 are potent SMARCA2 degraders. Further, we showed the antitumor growth inhibitory activity of YDR1 and YD54 in SMARCA4 …

JWU Dissertations & Theses
Female leadership in the fashion and apparel industry has increased recently; however, females remain underrepresented in C-suite and executive positions (Cassell et al., 2022; Field et al., 2023; Lindahl, 2024). Nonetheless, this significant industry employs numerous female workers within the different organizational structures in the United States (U.S.) (Kumar et al., 2019; Tagra, 2021; U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2024). Females encounter significant biases and barriers, such as unequitable promotional ventures and exclusion from networking opportunities. They are confronted with perceptions that undermine their effectiveness, hindering their ability to attain key roles.

Free-space optical communication holds immense potential for surpassing the bandwidth limitations of conventional physically defined channels. Achieving flexible and efficient communication in free space requires compact, robust optical components capable of dynamically tuning laser light without relying on bulky lenses or mechanically driven mirrors. Metasurfaces, or flat optics, have garnered significant attention due to their densely arranged subwavelength nano-resonators, which impart phase, amplitude, and polarization changes comparable to those of traditional bulky optics. However, conventional phase gradient metasurfaces are constrained by passive designs based on geometric configurations and the weak light-matter interaction inherent in most dielectric materials, limiting their applicability …

Natural Killer (NK) cells are cytotoxic innate lymphoid cells that play an important role in the surveillance and elimination of virally-infected and malignantly-transformed cells. These primary effector functions are achieved by producing cytokines and chemokines which activate and recruit additional immune effectors, as well as direct cytotoxic killing via perforin and granzymes. NK cell function is tightly regulated by a balance of germ-line encoded activating, inhibitory, co-stimulatory, and cytokine receptors expressed at the cell surface. Through these activating and inhibitory receptors, NK cells recognize and kill targets without prior sensitization through the loss of self-identifying molecules such as major histocompatibility …
Parapinopsin: A Photoswitchable Inhibitory Gpcr For Two-Photon Optogenetics, Bobbie J. Brown
Parapinopsin: A Photoswitchable Inhibitory Gpcr For Two-Photon Optogenetics, Bobbie J. Brown
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The development of optogenetic tools has greatly advanced the capability of researchers to understand the connection between neuronal activity and behavior. Optogenetics makes use of opsins, which are light activated ion-channels, ion pumps, or G-Protein coupled receptor (GPCR-based) proteins used to regulate cellular activity. Coupled with technological advances in genetics and optical physics/microscopy, optogenetics can be used to control specific populations of cells in a time-locked, spatially specific manner. The experiments possible with optogenetics depend largely on the capabilities and limitations of the opsin used; thus, there have been continuous efforts to design and employ new opsins with a variety …
Simplicity From Complexity: Sensing High-Dimensional Fluctuations Via Regulatory Network, Optimality In Allocating Cellular Resources, And Recovering Functional Groups Via Data-Driven Methods, Fang Yu
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Biological systems must navigate dynamic and complex environments while operating under constraints such as limited molecular resources, biochemical noise, and structural trade-offs. This dissertation investigates three distinct cases in which biological systems allocate resources and process information efficiently, revealing emergent simplicity from underlying complexity. The first study develops a generalized end-product inhibition model with cross-talk and an excess of regulators, providing a proof-of-principle that simple biochemical circuits could, in principle, dynamically adjust their responsiveness to high-dimensional environmental variation. This result highlights how such circuits may allow adaptive filtering of both dominant and subdominant fluctuation modes. The second study, conducted in …

Oxycodone Self-Administration Modulates Ventral Pallidal Neuron Activity And Plasticity, Jessica Tooley
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Opioid use disorder is an urgent public health crisis in the United States. Over 800,000 Americans have died from opioid-related overdoses since 2000. Nearly 30% of people who misuse opioids begin with prescription oral opioids, such as oxycodone, and continue misusing to avoid the immediate aversive state of withdrawal and the persistent dysphoria associated with protracted abstinence from opioids. The persistency of these dysphoric symptoms increases the risk of relapse even after long periods of abstinence. Treatment for opioid use disorder currently consists of pharmacological opioid treatment to reduce withdrawal symptoms and behavioral counseling. However, these strategies have significant real-world …

Peninsula Medical School
Background: Biologic therapy in asthma can be life-changing and affect health-related quality of life, but symptoms are rarely used in the assessment of response. Aim: To examine the change in health-related quality of life and asthma control between starting a biologic and assessment of biologic response, assessing whether this change can provide early prediction of eventual clinical response at 12 months. Methods: A service evaluation of severe asthmatics initiating a biologic at the Royal Devon NHS trust between 2019 and 22. Health-Related Quality of Life (Severe Asthma Questionnaire) and asthma control (Asthma Control Questionnaire-6) was captured at baseline, 8 weeks, …

This study explores the experiences of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) transfer students through the lens of Lily, a biology major who transferred from a large Midwestern university to a large Southeastern university. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected via a semi-structured interview to delve into the complexities of her transfer journey. The analysis was guided by the Edalgo and High (2022) framework, which examines the interplay of personal, institutional, and social factors in shaping student experiences.
Lily's narrative highlights several challenges common among STEM transfer students, including unexpected personal and financial pressures, difficulties in navigating …
An Intervention To Empower People To Confront Sexism, Rebecca Grace Drake
An Intervention To Empower People To Confront Sexism, Rebecca Grace Drake
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Even though sexist comments and behavior occur frequently in everyday life, people do not often confront the individuals who are responsible. However, interpersonal bias confrontations can be powerful tools for reducing expressions of bias and norm setting. The current studies tested an intervention designed to increase confrontations by harnessing theory and research on what holds people back from confronting. We designed a half-hour intervention consisting of engaging and evidence-based videos on confronting bias and self-reflection exercises to increase personal relevance. The module aimed to boost confronting by intervening at multiple points of the decision-making process by increasing recognition of sexism, …
