[Objective ] This study aims to investigate the immunoregulatory mechanisms of lactoferrin formula and its four nutritional components (α-lactalbumin,N-acetylneuraminic acid,yeast β-glucan,and lactoferrin ) in RAW 264.7 macrophages.[Method ] M1 and M 2 macrophage polarization were induced by lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and interleukin (IL)-4,respectively.Quantitative real-time PCR,flow cytometry,and Western blot were employed to analyze macrophage polarization and related signaling pathways.[Result ] Lactoferrin formula enhanced the phagocytic activity of macrophages and dose-dependently inhibited M 1 polarization while promoting M 2 polarization within the range of 10~50 µg/mL.A combination of four nutritional components exhibited similar effects,with greater effects than the three-component combination.Additionally,the lactoferrin formula upregulated …

The laws governing the repair of medical devices, most notably §1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), place unnecessary and harmful restrictions on healthcare access in the United States. As hospitals increasingly rely on complex medical technologies, manufacturers have relied on anti-circumvention laws to block independent and in-house repairs, effectively monopolizing the repair market. As a result, our current system is one that delays treatment, inflates costs, and leaves healthcare providers and consumers with fewer options during times of crisis and routine care alike. Sickle cell trait (SCT), the heterozygous form of sickle cell disease, has significant implications for health and reproductive decision-making. Timely disclosure of SCT status to children by their caregivers is critical for promoting genetic awareness and supporting informed reproductive choices. However, many caregivers delay or avoid this conversation. This study examined the psychosocial and behavioral factors influencing caregivers’ intentions to disclose SCT status to their children, guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Theory of Regret Regulation. [Objective ] This study aims to evaluate the antibiotic resistance and transmission risk of Enterococcus faecalis (E.faecalis ) in the pork production chain.[Method ] A total of 300 samples were collected from the surface of live pigs,carcasses,and the environment in 2 pig farms,1 slaughterhouse,and 2 markets in Hangzhou,Zhejiang.The strain identification,antibiotic resistance phenotypes,resistance genotypes,and virulence genotypes were performed by 16S rDNA sequences,broth microdilution method (MIC ),and PCR.In addition,multilocus sequencing typing (MLST ) and conjugational transfer tests were conducted.[Result ] The 125 isolates of E.faecalis showed high resistance to antibiotics such as tiamulin,tetracycline,and doxycycline,and the isolates from pig farms showed higher antibiotic …

[Objective ] This study aimed to investigate the effects of Lactobacillus plantarum (L.plantarum ) fermentation on the metabolism of flavonoids and organic acids in mango juice.[Method ] Six strains of L.plantarum were selected for fermentation of the juice samples from two mango varieties ‘Tainong' and ‘Guiqi'.The mass concentrations of organic acids and flavonoids in the juice samples were determined by ultra high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS ).Orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis was employed to compare the metabolites in the mango juice samples fermented with different strains.[Result ] L.plantarum fermentation significantly enhanced the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC ) …

[Objective ] This study aims to reveal the interactions between collagen and volatile compounds during the cooking process.[Method ] The relative molecular weight,particle size,solubility,secondary structure,and surface hydrophobicity of collagen and the droplet size of the collagen emulsion were studied.Furthermore,the binding ability of collagen to volatile compounds of the aqueous and emulsion systems of collagen was measured.[Result ] As the heating time was extended,the triple-helix structure of collagen was destroyed and the polypeptide chains were degraded,which were accompanied with the decrease in surface hydrophobicity,increase in solubility,and heat-induced aggregation.The binding ability of collagen to volatile compounds gradually decreased with the extension of …

The global increase in the number of managed honey bees (Apis mellifera) has raised concerns about their impact on native pollinator species, including bumble bees (Bombus spp.). This study examines the extent of floral resource overlap between honey bees and bumble bees in urban areas within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Ontario, Canada, to better understand how competition for floral resources may influence bumble bee foraging behavior and niche partitioning. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic sharply increased the prevalence of eating disorders (EDs) among youth. These conditions are associated with high treatment costs and have the second-highest mortality rate among mental illnesses, surpassed only by opioid overdose, making them a critical concern for school communities.
Local Problem: A learning needs assessment conducted by the Alameda County School Nurses Network identified gaps in school nurses’ knowledge and confidence regarding ED identification, referral, and care coordination. Laboratorians identifying unknown pandemic pathogens face elevated risks of laboratory-acquired infections yet limited research examines how regulated safety practices influence these risks. This quantitative, correlational study used the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s secondary data (2018–2023) to examine two research questions. The first one questioned whether there were differences in safety incidents between registered and exempt clinical laboratories. The second research question investigated whether there was an association of laboratory incidents between BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories. Microbial consortia of compatible microorganisms play a key role in enhancing agricultural sustainability by optimizing nutrient uptake by promoting plant growth more effectively. This study aimed to identify local isolates with the most effective plant growth-promoting (PGP) properties and to form a consortium of isolates showing the optimal synergistic effect between plant and bacterial components to improve the growth of wheat plants. For this purpose, 48 isolates identified from 145 isolates were screened for their PGP activities. Water deficit is a critical challenge to global agricultural productivity and food security, which is exacerbated by climate change and increasing water scarcity. To withstand drought stress, plants employ a variety of molecular strategies driven by complex regulatory networks. This review examines the central role of transcription factors (TFs) as master regulators that activate drought responsive genes, which in turn mediate key adaptive processes such as osmoregulation, antioxidative defense, and membrane stability. A distinctive aspect of this review is its focus on the dynamic interplay between TFs and hormonal signaling pathways, including abscisic acid, ethylene, salicylic acid, and jasmonic acid. …

Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022, unsettled questions remain about the constitutional status of unborn children. With good reason, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization did not address whether unborn children are persons within the original meaning of the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses. The historical evidence, however, is now well-established that when the Fourteenth Amendment was ratified in 1868, the word “person” had a settled public meaning that included every human being—children in the womb among them. Actin proteins play an important role in microfilaments, one of the three components of the cytoskeleton of the cell. The actin protein is responsible for cellular functions such as with their role in neuromuscular junctions. The dynamics of these proteins can be further explored with manipulation of polymerization through the treatment of a biochemical drug, Cytochalasin D. This fungal toxin caps the ends of actin filaments, destabilizing them by inhibiting G- and F-actin monomers from binding. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder characterized by sickle red blood cells (RBCs). Sickle RBCs cause cerebral vasculopathies including vaso-occlusive events, leading to ischemia-reperfusion injury and hypoxic tissue environment. To date, the physiological blood flow velocities in cerebral vessels of preclinical SCD models has not been evaluated under hypoxic-reoxygenation. In our study, we used transcranial ultrasound techniques to measure abnormal blood flow velocities in the internal carotid (ICA) and middle cerebral arteries (MCA) of transgenic sickle cell mice (SS) challenged with hypoxia-reoxygenation. Black family caregivers in the United States experienced disproportionately high mortality rates due to COVID-19, resulting in many Black children becoming orphans. The unexpected loss placed a burden on these family caregivers, who navigated their grief while taking on new caregiving responsibilities. Limited studies explored how Black family caregivers experienced the meaning of COVID grief, loss, and coping strategies. Over the course of this project our group members Rebecca, Max, PJ, Amanda, and Risa worked closely with Jim Knight and Brian Auman from Turtle Creek Park to help research, plan, and execute a tree transplanting event that would be efficiently implemented and environmentally sound. This work involved extensive preparatory work in the park including soil testing, bare leaf tree identification, tree and shrub species characterization, and recommendation. Mechanisms That Contribute To Age-Dependent Segregation Errors In Drosophila Oocytes, Zihan Meng

Meiotic chromosome segregation errors in human oocytes are the leading cause of miscarriages and aneuploid pregnancies, and these errors increase dramatically as women age. Using Drosophila oocytes as a model system, this dissertation identifies the NAD⁺-dependent deacetylase Sirt1 as a key regulator of chromosome segregation and meiotic arm cohesion. Loss of Sirt1 activity during meiotic prophase leads to premature loss of arm cohesion and increased segregation errors in Drosophila oocytes. In addition, elevated acetylation of its substrate, histone H4K16, indicates that Sirt1 activity declines in oocytes during aging. Strikingly, dietary administration of the Sirt1 activator SRT1720 preserves Sirt1 deacetylase activity …

Based on seminal work in placental species (eutherians)1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, a paradigm of mammalian development has emerged wherein the genome-wide erasure of parental DNA methylation is required for embryogenesis. Whether such DNA methylation reprogramming is, in fact, conserved in other mammals is unknown. Here, to resolve this point, we generated base-resolution DNA methylation maps in gametes, embryos and adult tissues of a marsupial, the opossum Monodelphis domestica, revealing variations from the eutherian-derived model. Chronic back pain (CBP) affects 1 in 10 people worldwide, reducing mobility, productivity, and quality of life. Despite its prevalence, non-addictive treatments remain limited due to an incomplete understanding of chronic pain mechanisms. This dissertation examines peripheral neuroimmune interactions in CBP using a urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA)-induced mouse model (uPA-CBP). uPA, a pro-inflammatory serine protease, was injected into the L2/L3 lumbar spinous ligament, inducing prolonged mechanical and cold hypersensitivity. Flow cytometry of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) showed increased CD45+CD11b+ myeloid cells in males and CD45+CD3+CD4+ lymphocytes in females. DRG neurons from male uPA-CBP mice exhibited heightened action potential firing. Pharmacological …
