The seasonal flight patterns of 35 species and subspecies of Pentatomoidea collected in window traps in a North Carolina black walnut plantation are discussed. Flying height distributions and seasonal activities of the five species that were most frequently collected (i.e., Amnestus basidentatus, A. pallidus, A. spinifrons, Brochymena qltadripustulata and Euschistus servus) are considered in detail.

Dumping sites in general have been noted to be sources of pollution in the environment and e-waste dumping sites are not exempted. A study on the pollution of heavy metals in two local government areas (LGAs) in Ogun State, was investigated. As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, and Zn were detected. Cd, Cu were detected in two areas. While Fe, Pb in four areas, and Zn concentrations were above the World Health Organisation permissible limit. Background: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive muscular disease associated with muscle fiber degeneration and increased inflammatory responses including Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and other cytokines. Canakinumab (Ilaris) is an anti-human IL-1β monoclonal antibody that neutralizes IL-1β. Methods: We completed an open-label, single dose pilot study of canakinumab 2 mg/kg subcutaneous injection in steroid naïve boys with DMD older than 2 years of age to determine safety and potential serum response biomarkers of efficacy at 4-weeks post treatment. Proteome profiling was performed using high throughput multiplexing aptamer SomaScan assay based technology targeting 1,500 unique serum proteins. Results: Three subjects completed …

Correlates Of Internalized Weight Bias In An Ethnically Diverse College Sample, Amanda Cipolla

Psychology ETDs

Understanding factors related to internalized weight bias (IWB), particularly among diverse populations, is an important avenue of research to inform interventions aimed at reducing IWB. This study surveyed college students (n = 319) about their body image, social media use, and culture. ANOVA, multiple regression, and hierarchical regressions were used to analyze data. Overall, body image flexibility emerged as a strongly negatively related to IWB, indicating potentially protective qualities. Physical appearance comparison, objectified body consciousness, and BMI emerged as maladaptive correlates. Findings related to social media were more complicated, with appearance related social media consciousness as an important negative correlate, …

Recent changes in US oceanographic assets are impacting scientists' ability to access seafloor and sub-seafloor materials and thus constraining progress on science critical for societal needs. Here we identify national infrastructure needs to address critical science questions. This commentary reports on community-driven discussions that took place during the 3-day FUTURE of US Seafloor Sampling Capabilities 2024 Workshop, which used an “all-hands-on-deck” approach to assess seafloor and sub-seafloor sampling requirements of a broad range of scientific objectives, focusing on capabilities that could be supported through the US Academic Research Fleet (US-ARF) now or in the near future. Tourism was one of the most severely affected sectors by the Covid-19 pandemic. Even religious tourism, traditionally less susceptible to market fluctuations, is now compelled to adopt innovative strategies in response to these effects. This article analyses the satisfaction of religious tourism, specifically its relationship with the figure of Maimonides, who is considered to be an important religious thinker and is included within the Pantheon database of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The unicorn is a legendary chimaera that, for centuries, has been present in the mindset of Euro-Mediterranean cultures. Although its morphological description changed, tradition identifies it as an animal like a horse, albeit smaller and with a spiralling horn on its head pointing forward. The unicorn has been known since Antiquity, with references by authors such as Ctesias and Pliny. Submarine groundwater discharge of legacy nitrogen can significantly contribute to coastal eutrophication. Permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) that intercept contaminated groundwater and provide a carbon source for microbially mediated denitrification are increasingly considered to remove nitrate before it reaches coastal surface waters. While woodchips have been shown to efficiently remove nitrate, open questions remain regarding the nitrogen removal performance of PRBs with different woodchip arrangements (trench-type vs column arrays), woodchip types (hardwoods vs softwoods) and the potential formation, release and fate of secondary byproducts, specifically greenhouse gases and dissolved iron. In a rural outpatient cardiac clinic serving a predominantly underserved population, many patients face financial and access barriers that preclude the use of newer non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs). Plastic waste is a growing environmental concern due to its resistance to natural degradation, leading to long-term accumulation in landfills and oceans. One potential solution is enzymatic degradation, where specific enzymes break down plastic into smaller, biodegradable components. However, enzymes often lose their effectiveness under the extreme conditions plastics experience during manufacturing, such as high temperatures, mechanical stress, and dehydration. Measles, hepatitis C, and COVID-19 are significant human diseases caused by RNA viruses. While vaccines exist to prevent infections, there are a small number of currently available therapeutic agents that can effectively treat these diseases after infection occurs. This study explores a new therapeutic strategy using a small molecule designated polyprenyl immunostimulant (PI) to increase innate immune responses and combat viral infections. Pathogenic yeasts are an increasing concern in healthcare, with species like Candida auris often displaying drug resistance and causing high mortality in immunocompromised patients. The need for rapid and accessible diagnostic methods for accurate yeast identification is critical, especially in resource-limited settings. This study presents a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based approach for classifying pathogenic yeast species from microscopy images. Using transfer learning, we trained the model to identify six yeast species from simple micrographs, achieving high classification accuracy (93.91% at the patch level, 99.09% at the whole image level) and low misclassification rates across species, with the best performing model. …

Mucopolysaccharidosis type IVA (MPS IVA, Morquio A syndrome) is a rare inherited disorder characterized by skeletal dysplasia due to deficient N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfate sulfatase activity, resulting in glycosaminoglycan (GAG) accumulation. Identifying accurate biomarkers reflecting clinical severity and therapeutic response remains challenging. This study evaluated potential surrogate biomarkers, including N-terminal pro-C-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proCNP), collagen types I and II, mono-sulfated keratan sulfate (KS), di-sulfated KS, and chondroitin-6-sulfate (C6S), in blood and urine samples from 60 patients ranging from 1 to 62 years of age.
