Textile dyes in wastewater can be harmful pollutants when released into the environment without treatment. Biodegradation of textile dye effluents by different microbes, including fungi, has become popular as an alternative to physicochemical methods. The mangrove Avicennia marina is known to harbor endophytic fungi which have the potential to carry out dye degradation. Therefore, this study assessed the ability to decolorize synthetic dyes of endophytic fungi isolated from the leaves of A. marina. Of the nine fungal endophytes, Aspergillus niger, Syncephalastrum racemosum and Penicillium citrinum exhibited the highest mycelial growths in solid media, while all endophytes adsorbed Congo red. Through …

Toward Raising The Child And The Village: Analyzing The Barriers To Implementing Community-Based Curriculum In New York City High Schools, Ife Damon
Publications and Research
As automation increases and single-skill set jobs become non-existent, employees can no longer only possess the technical knowledge of their industry but must also be well versed in a variety of essential skills that artificial intelligence cannot acquire. It is evident from the research that the United States’ traditional approach to teaching and learning has not kept up with the demands of the changing labor market because young adults are graduating from high school lacking the 21st-century skills needed for contemporary careers. High school educators can develop these skills within students by implementing community-based learning (CBL) activities into the curriculum. …
Mississippi Sandhill Crane Conservation Update 2017–2019, Scott G. Hereford, Angela J. Dedrickson
Mississippi Sandhill Crane Conservation Update 2017–2019, Scott G. Hereford, Angela J. Dedrickson
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
To manage crane habitat on the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge during 2017-2019, 5,822 ha were treated with prescribed burns, 648 ha of woody vegetation were removed, 97 ha of invasive plants were chemically treated, and 1.2 ha of crops were planted. Mississippi sandhill crane (Grus canadensis pulla) use responded to habitat treatment; 348 of 349 VHF radio locations were in treated areas. There were 316 target predators removed. Eighteen captive-reared juveniles were acclimated and released. We detected an average of 38 nests per year, including a record 40 nests in 2019. Fifteen chicks fledged in 2019, …

Twenty-Year Status Of The Eastern Migratory Whooping Crane Reintroduction, Hillary L. Thompson, Nicole M. Gordon, Darby P. Bolt, Jadine R. Lee, Eva K. Szyszkoski
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
Since the 10-year status update in 2011, the first parent-reared whooping cranes (Grus americana) were released in the Eastern Migratory Population, the ultralight program (UL) ended, and cranes were released at new sites in eastern Wisconsin. During 2011-2020, 117 captive-reared whooping cranes were released; 75 costume-reared (35 in UL and 40 in the Direct Autumn Release program) and 42 parent-reared. There were no significant differences in 1- or 3-year survival rates based on rearing technique or release site. The population size remained at about 100 cranes during 2010-2018 but then decreased during 2018-2020 due to a reduced number …

Drivers Of Annual Fledging In The Mississippi Sandhill Crane Population 1991–2018, Henry W. Woolley, Scott G. Hereford, Jerome J. Howard
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
We studied trends in nesting, number of chicks fledged annually, and their environmental and biotic drivers in the wild population of Mississippi sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis pulla) on Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge during 1991-2018. Population size, number of nests, and number of chicks fledged annually increased slowly but significantly over the course of the study. Increases in population size were related to both number of wild-reared chicks fledged annually and number of captive-reared chicks released each year, but wild-reared chicks had significantly higher survivorship than captive-reared chicks. Hurricanes transiently raised mortality rates but only Hurricane Katrina …
The Impact Of Marking On Cranes: An Issue Paper, Anne E. Lacy, Barry K. Hartup, David A. Brandt
The Impact Of Marking On Cranes: An Issue Paper, Anne E. Lacy, Barry K. Hartup, David A. Brandt
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
As crane researchers and conservationists, our overarching objective is to learn and gather information about our study subjects while doing as little harm as possible. New technologies may be emerging too rapidly for researchers to assess the effectiveness or potential adverse effects of the devices, despite the ease and increasing accuracy of the information they provide. Researchers need to be able to gather information to answer various questions in a way that balances ethics and expense. With marking of cranes as a focal point, we discuss issues surrounding crane research based on various techniques, some health issues that are a …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Readiness Assurance Testing As Part Of Team-Based Ecology Instruction, Danielle Berger, Larkin Powell
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Readiness Assurance Testing (RAT) incorporates content recall, immediate feedback and peer instruction, three strategies known to enhance student learning, into a single classroom activity. While iRAT and tRAT assessments are promising instructional tools, they are time-intensive to administer.
1.Do iRAT/tRAT tests promote student retention of content better than other in-class activities, justifying the investment of instructional time? 2.Are iRAT/tRAT tests beneficial across the spectrum of academic performance?
• Students get a larger proportion of RAT questions correct on exams than other multiple choice questions (Table 1, RAT~MC Intercept), supporting the claim that this instructional technique provides better content-retention than other …

Art Concept Pluralism Undermines The Definitional Project, P.D. Magnus, Christy Mag Uidhir
Art Concept Pluralism Undermines The Definitional Project, P.D. Magnus, Christy Mag Uidhir
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
This discussion note addresses Caleb Hazelwood’s ‘Practice-Centered Pluralism and a Disjunctive Theory of Art.’ Hazelwood advances a disjunctive definition of art on the basis of an analogy with species concept pluralism in the philosophy of biology. We recognize the analogy between species and art, we applaud attention to practice, and we are bullish on pluralism— but it is a mistake to take these as the basis for a disjunctive definition.
Adapting To A 4°C World, Clifford Villa
Adapting To A 4°C World, Clifford Villa
Faculty Scholarship
The Paris Agreement’s goal to hold warming to 1.5°-2°C above pre-industrial levels now appears unrealistic. Profs. Robin Kundis Craig and J.B. Ruhl have recently argued that because a 4°C world may be likely, we must recognize the disruptive consequences of such a world and respond by reimagining governance structures to meet the challenges of adapting to it. In this latest in a biannual series of essays, they and other members of the Environmental Law Collaborative explore what 4°C might mean for a variety of current legal doctrines, planning policies, governance structures, and institutions.

Fast Stereotactic Radiosurgery Planning Using Patient-Specific Beam Angle Optimization And Automation, Thomas D. Mann, Kundan S. Thind, Nicolas P. Ploquin
Radiation Oncology Articles
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Linac-based stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) planning for multi-metastatic cases is a complex and intensive process. A manual planning strategy starts with a template-based set of beam angles and applies modifications though a trial and error process. Beam angle optimization uses patient specific geometric heuristics to determine beam angles that provide optimal target coverage and avoid treating through Organs-at-Risk (OARs). This study expands on a collision prediction application developed using an application programming interface, integrating beam angle optimization and collision prediction into a Stereotactic Optimized Automated Radiotherapy (SOAR) planning algorithm.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-five patient plans, previously treated with …

Seasonal Dynamics Of Parasitic Vector-Borne Pathogens In Cattle Farms And The Development Of Dna Amplification And Artificial Intelligent-Assisted Detection Methods, Apinya Arnuphapprasert
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Vector-borne pathogens in cattle have detrimental effects on animal health and the quality of animal products. These pathogens are prevalent worldwide, particularly in tropical and sub-tropical regions like Thailand. Notable vector-borne pathogens affecting cattle in Thailand include Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bovis, B. bigemina, Theileria orientalis, Trypanosoma evansi, and T. theileri. Additionally, climate change influences the behaviour of these vector-borne pathogens through its impact on their vectors. Prompt and accurate diagnosis is crucial to mitigate the adverse effects caused by these pathogens. However, conventional microscopic examination, considered the gold standard, may have limitations in terms of sensitivity and time requirements. Therefore, …

Investigating Alamethicin Ion Channel Behavior In Lipid Bilayers, Vennisa Owusu-Barfi, Loren Haarsma
Investigating Alamethicin Ion Channel Behavior In Lipid Bilayers, Vennisa Owusu-Barfi, Loren Haarsma
Summer Research
Lipid molecules are made up of a head group that is strongly attracted to water and a tail group that is less attracted to it. In water, they selfassemble into bilayers which form the basis of cell membranes. Ion channels are proteins in the lipid bilayer which control the flow of ions in and out of the cell. Alamethicin is a 20 amino-acid peptide produced by fungus. When added to a lipid bilayer they self-assemble into voltage-dependent ion channels which open for brief periods called dwell times, usually on order of a few milliseconds. Because alamethicin is a fairly simple …

Cone Of Gaze In Schizotypy: Potential Differences Among Positive, Negative, And Disorganized Subtypes, Courtney N. Wiesepape
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although not as prevalent as other disorders, the impact of schizophrenia is widespread and costly. Societal burden and individual suffering provide support for increased focus on the early identification of individuals at risk for developing schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Utilizing the construct of schizotypy is one method of studying the early onset of these disorders. Meehl (1962; 1990) introduced the concept of schizotypy as personality organization that results in increased vulnerability to develop schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Thus, individuals psychometrically identified to be schizotypes present a unique opportunity to study the factors that contribute to the development of schizophrenia spectrum disorders. In …

The Role Of Cyclic Di Amp In Speb Virulence And Pathogenesis In Streptococcus Pyogenes, Sabrina Faozia
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The second messenger molecule, c-di-AMP, plays a critical role in pathogenesis and virulence in group A Streptococcus or S. pyogenes. However, relatively little is known about its underlying molecular mechanisms in the c-di-AMP signal transduction pathways. This study aims to understand the role of c-di-AMP in SpeB virulence regulation and pathogenesis to decipher the c-di-AMP signaling mechanism in S. pyogenes. SpeB is one of the major virulence factors crucial for the pathogenesis of severe invasive GAS diseases. It is a cysteine protease that can cleave host proteins and own surface proteins. In S. pyogenes, c-di-AMP is synthesized by a diadenylate …
Using The Thematic Apperception Test As A Tool For Measuring Attachment In Clinical Settings, Audra Biermann
Using The Thematic Apperception Test As A Tool For Measuring Attachment In Clinical Settings, Audra Biermann
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Despite the frequency with which clinicians utilize principles of attachment theory in their work with patients, formal assessment of attachment is relatively uncommon in clinical settings (Burke et al., 2016). This is perhaps owing to a lack of familiarity with or accessibility to available attachment measures, many of which were developed primarily for research rather than clinical purposes. One instrument which may represent a useful tool for measuring attachment in clinical settings is the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT; Murray, 1936/1971), a projective measure of personality with widespread familiarity among clinicians. Although the TAT was not developed specifically as a measure …
