Anna Is Adopted!, Annagrace Johnson

Department of Educational Curriculum and Instruction

"Anna is Adopted" is a realistic fiction short story with actual scenarios from my childhood growing up. The purpose of this story is to bring awareness to the feelings of misplacement for all children. Based on personal experience, adoption is not recognized in a positive light each day at school no matter how parents manage the issues. This story is written for younger elementary age students but can be applied to students of all ages. Since the story is based on rich lived experience, it is a great resource for children, parents, and teachers to address problems such as anxiety, …

Towards Fluoro-Free Interventions: Using Radial Intracardiac Ultrasound For Vascular Navigation, Hareem Nisar, Leah Groves, Leandro Cardarelli-Leite, Terry M Peters, Elvis C.S. Chen

Robarts Imaging Publications

Transcatheter cardio-vascular interventions have the advantage of patient safety, reduced surgery time, and minimal trauma to the patient's body. Transcathetherinterventions, which are performed percutaneously, suffer from the lack of direct line-of-sight with the surgical tools and the patient anatomy. Therefore, such interventionalprocedures rely heavily on image guidance for navigating towards and deliveringtherapy at the target site. Vascular navigation via the inferior vena cava (IVC), from thegroin to the heart, is an imperative part of most transcatheter cardiovascularinterventions such as valve repair surgeries and ablation therapy. Traditionally, the IVCis navigated using fluoroscopic techniques such as angiography or CT venography. These X-ray based techniques …

The Unfolded Protein Response: An Emerging Therapeutic Target For Pancreatitis And Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, M. Teresa Borrello, Mickenzie B. Martin, Christopher L. Pin Jan 2022

The Unfolded Protein Response: An Emerging Therapeutic Target For Pancreatitis And Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, M. Teresa Borrello, Mickenzie B. Martin, Christopher L. Pin

Paediatrics Publications

Pancreatitis is a debilitating disease involving inflammation and fibrosis of the exocrine pancreas. Recurrent or chronic forms of pancreatitis are a significant risk factor for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. While genetic factors have been identified for both pathologies, environmental stresses play a large role in their etiology. All cells have adapted mechanisms to handle acute environmental stress that alters energy demands. A common pathway involved in the stress response involves endoplasmic reticulum stress and the unfolded protein response (UPR). While rapidly activated by many external stressors, in the pancreas the UPR plays a fundamental biological role, likely due to the high …

Development And Implementation Of A Reflective Writing Assignment For Undergraduate Students In A Large Public Health Biology Course, Obidimma Ezezika, Nancy Johnston

Health Studies Publications

Reflective writing may be undervalued as purely expressive rather than a critical or an academic tool in undergraduate public health biology courses. When grounded in course concepts and academic learning, a reflective essay can be a learning tool for students that helps them use discipline knowledge and apply it to real-world issues. Studies on teaching reflection have identified its value for training students in critical thinking and improving self-regulated learning. Considering Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle framework, in this article, we detail the design, implementation, and evaluation of a reflective writing assignment integrated into a lower-year undergraduate public health biology course. Through …

Biohacking Labs In Libraries, Awura-Adwoa Bonsu Jan 2022

Biohacking Labs In Libraries, Awura-Adwoa Bonsu

Final Projects Winter 2022

The Information Age continues to evolve. Technological advances with its innovations continue. Its impact on the individual and society continue unabated. The term biohacking is a combination of two words, biology and hacking. Hacking from the Oxford English dictionary can be used as a noun, like the name of a place, people, or sports etc(Oxford, 2022). In technology, hackers in the dictionary also have a sinister meaning. They are those who escape security to access unauthorised data such as on your phone, email, website, or computer. Biohackers are people who try to improve/optimise biological performance, which otherwise work normally, with …

Rapid sample processing and interpretation of estimated exposures will be critical for triaging exposed individuals after a major radiation incident. The dicentric chromosome (DC) assay assesses absorbed radiation using metaphase cells from blood. The Automated Dicentric Chromosome Identifier and Dose Estimator System (ADCI) identifies DCs and determines radiation doses. This study aimed to broaden accessibility and speed of this system, while protecting data and software integrity. ADCI Online is a secure web-streaming platform accessible worldwide from local servers. Cloud-based systems containing data and software are separated until they are linked for radiation exposure estimation. Dose estimates are identical to ADCI …

Social Factors And The Neurobiology Of Pathogen Avoidance, Martin Kavaliers, Klaus Peter Ossenkopp, Cashmeira Dove Tyson, Indra R. Bishnoi, Elena Choleris Jan 2022

Social Factors And The Neurobiology Of Pathogen Avoidance, Martin Kavaliers, Klaus Peter Ossenkopp, Cashmeira Dove Tyson, Indra R. Bishnoi, Elena Choleris

Neuroscience Institute Publications

Although the evolutionary causes and consequences of pathogen avoidance have been gaining increasing interest, there has been less attention paid to the proximate neurobiological mechanisms. Animals gauge the infection status of conspecifics and the threat they represent on the basis of various sensory and social cues. Here, we consider the neurobiology of pathogen detection and avoidance from a cognitive, motivational and affective state (disgust) perspective, focusing on the mechanisms associated with activating and directing parasite/pathogen avoidance. Drawing upon studies with laboratory rodents, we briefly discuss aspects of (i) olfactory-mediated recognition and avoidance of infected conspecifics; (ii) relationships between pathogen avoidance …

Objective: Although the presymptomatic stages of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) provide a unique chance to delay or even prevent neurodegeneration by early intervention, they remain poorly defined. Leveraging a large multicenter cohort of genetic FTD mutation carriers, we provide a biomarker-based stratification and biomarker cascade of the likely most treatment-relevant stage within the presymptomatic phase: the conversion stage. Methods: We longitudinally assessed serum levels of neurofilament light (NfL) and phosphorylated neurofilament heavy (pNfH) in the Genetic FTD Initiative (GENFI) cohort (n = 444), using single-molecule array technique. Subjects comprised 91 symptomatic and 179 presymptomatic subjects with mutations in the FTD genes …

Comparing Effectiveness Of Two Antibodies (Aducanumab And Gantenerumab) On Reducing Amyloid-Beta Plaques, Nikhila Paleati, Pranav R. Neravetla, Akhil B. Godbole, Emily S. Lavin, Arthur K. Sikora

Protein Modeling Reports

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a degenerative neurological disorder that destroys memory and other important cognitive functions. As time progresses, brain cell connections, as well as the brain cells themselves, atrophy and die. AD is caused by a missense mutation in the amyloid-beta peptide within the amyloid precursor protein (APP). The mutation results in glutamine being replaced with glutamic acid. Previously conducted studies showed that mutated forms of the amyloid-beta peptide fragment have a greater tendency to stick together and form protein clumps or aggregates. The abnormal build-up of aggregates in and around the brain cells has been found to be …

Accuracy And Practical Considerations For Doubly Labeled Water Analysis In Nutrition Studies Using A Laser-Based Isotope Instrument (Off-Axis Integrated Cavity Output Spectroscopy), Linda M. Reynard, William W. Wong, Noreen Tuross

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Given the utility of the doubly labeled water (DLW) method for determination of energy expenditure, additional techniques for isotope analysis of the samples are welcome. Laser-based instruments are one such new analytical tool, but their accuracy and feasibility for DLW studies are grossly understudied.

Objectives: We assessed the accuracy of laser-based isotope ratio measurements as part of the DLW method for estimation of carbon dioxide production rate (rCO2) and total energy expenditure (TEE), in between-group comparison study designs.

Methods: Urine samples from a previous study were analyzed with a laser-based instrument [off-axis integrated cavity output spectroscopy (OA-ICOS)]. …

School of Pharmacy Faculty Articles

Methamphetamine has been labeled "America's most dangerous drug" and has received significant public health attention. Stimulant addiction and tolerance are heavily documented in the literature; increasingly larger doses maintain euphoria in short time periods to withstand stimulant tolerance. Stimulant deaths are high in the United States and abroad. Between 2013 and 2019, deaths related to methamphetamine use quadrupled from 3,616 to 16,127. Methamphetamine use increased four-fold from 2015 to 2016. Due to this increase in methamphetamine use and its associated medical complications, the mortality rate associated with methamphetamine use has doubled over the past ten years. Cardiopulmonary symptoms include chest …

Long-Read Sequencing Of The Zebrafish Genome Reorganizes Genomic Architecture, Yelena Chernyavskaya, Xiaofei Zhang, Jinze Liu, Jessica Blackburn

Biostatistics Publications

Background

Nanopore sequencing technology has revolutionized the field of genome biology with its ability to generate extra-long reads that can resolve regions of the genome that were previously inaccessible to short-read sequencing platforms. Over 50% of the zebrafish genome consists of difficult to map, highly repetitive, low complexity elements that pose inherent problems for short-read sequencers and assemblers.

Results

We used long-read nanopore sequencing to generate a de novo assembly of the zebrafish genome and compared our assembly to the current reference genome, GRCz11. The new assembly identified 1697 novel insertions and deletions over one kilobase in length and placed …

The Right To Reproduce, Carolyn Mcleod Jan 2022

The Right To Reproduce, Carolyn Mcleod

Philosophy Publications

The reproductive rights of women have been a central topic in feminist bioethics. The focus has been predominantly on the right not to reproduce, and so not to be subject to pronatalist social forces that make motherhood compulsory for women. That is the case despite many women and other members of marginalized groups experiencing anti-natalism, or in other words, social pressure to avoid biological reproduction. For these groups, the right to reproduce is as important, if not more important, than the right not to reproduce. This chapter concentrates on the right to reproduce and considers what form it should take …

Recruiting companies recommend elite female soccer players be ≥165 cm (5'5″) in stature. This study investigated if stature limits match-playing time and performance in elite World Cup soccer among players, positions, and countries. We hypothesized stature would not affect match-playing time or performance. Descriptive data were collected on 552 players from 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. Odds ratios determined likelihood of starting for players ≥165 cm. ANOVAs compared playing time between stature groups, among positions, and between countries. Performance factors including assists, goals, attempts, corners, shots blocked, and defending blocks were reported. Independent t-tests compared differences between players (≥165 cm, …
