[Chapter Abstract] 230Coral reefs provide critical ecological and geomorphic (e.g. sediment production for reef-fronted shoreline maintenance) services, which interact in complex and dynamic ways. These services are under threat from climate change, requiring dynamic modelling approaches that predict how reef systems will respond to different future climate scenarios. Carbonate budgets, which estimate net reef calcium carbonate production, provide a comprehensive ‘snap-shot’ assessment of reef accretionary potential and reef stability. These budgets, however, were not intended to account for the full suite of processes that maintain coral reef services or to provide predictive capacity on longer timescales (decadal to centennial). Patterns Of Natural Variation In Drought Escape And Drought Avoidance In The Common Monkeyflower, Joshua Fitzpatrick Jan 2022

Patterns Of Natural Variation In Drought Escape And Drought Avoidance In The Common Monkeyflower, Joshua Fitzpatrick

Honors Baccalaureate Theses

Climate change has caused increasing temperatures and drier climates over the past decade. This has especially affected the western coast of North America, bringing even drier and hotter climates. This makes it difficult for plant life to prosper in these areas. One way that plants fight these drought conditions is through drought resistance traits. These drought resistance traits include flowering early and reproducing early before drought conditions onset or increasing the efficiency of water use by tissues and the stomata of the plant. While these traits are both beneficial in fighting drought conditions, they often negatively impact each other. This …

“Sometimes My Tongue Stucks With Fluency”: International Students’ English Needs At A Higher Education Institution, Johanna Tigert, Golnar Fotouhi

NERA Conference Proceedings 2022

We investigated international students’ (ISs’) English learning needs in terms of language tasks organized by reading, writing, listening and speaking, and their confidence in their ability to perform said tasks. We also investigated university resources ISs suggested for increasing their cultural and linguistic adjustment to campus. A survey and focus group interviews uncovered that ISs’ top needs were in the area of reading, but they were also the most confident in that area. Students expressed the lowest amount of confidence in understanding cultural references and jokes. ISs suggested conversation groups, buddy programs, and movie clubs as helpful university resources.

The Isolation And Characterization Of Bacteriophage Hasitha, Gillian Brown Jan 2022

The Isolation And Characterization Of Bacteriophage Hasitha, Gillian Brown

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Microbacteriophage Hasitha is a virus that infects Microbacterium foliorum, a bacterium associated with grasses that was first discovered in Germany. Hasitha was isolated from an enriched compost sample and is of particular interest due to its unusual growth pattern. Most bacteriophages require actively growing host cells to produce new phage progeny. However, Hasitha can infect and kill stationary (non-replicating) bacterial cells. We discovered this unusual characteristic through a fortuitous observation of infected lawns that were allowed to incubate in the lab workspace for approximately one month. During this time, a noticeable “halo” grew around the initial site of infection …

Biology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Aim: Rapid global change is impacting the diversity of tree species and essential ecosystem functions and services of forests. It is therefore critical to understand and predict how the diversity of tree species is spatially distributed within and among forest biomes. Satellite remote sensing platforms have been used for decades to map forest structure and function but are limited in their capacity to monitor change by their relatively coarse spatial resolution and the complexity of scales at which different dimensions of biodiversity are observed in the field. Recently, airborne remote sensing platforms making use of passive high spectral resolution (i.e., …

Dccam-Mrnet: Mixed Residual Connection Network With Dilated Convolution And Coordinate Attention Mechanism For Tomato Disease Identification, Yujian Liu, Yaowen Hu, Weiwei Cai, Guoxiong Zhou, Jialei Zhan, Liujun Li

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Tomato is an important and fragile crop. During the course of its development, it is frequently contaminated with bacteria or viruses. Tomato leaf diseases may be detected quickly and accurately, resulting in increased productivity and quality. Because of the intricate development environment of tomatoes and their inconspicuous disease spot features and small spot area, present machine vision approaches fail to reliably recognize tomato leaves. As a result, this research proposes a novel paradigm for detecting tomato leaf disease. The INLM (integration nonlocal means) filtering algorithm, for example, decreases the interference of surrounding noise on the features. Then, utilizing ResNeXt50 as …

One Shell Of A Problem: Cumulative Threat Analysis Of Male Sea Turtles Indicates High Anthropogenic Threat For Migratory Individuals And Gulf Of Mexico Residents, Micah Ashford

Masters Theses

Human use of oceans has dramatically increased in the 21st century, with some of the highest rates of change found within the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. Sea turtles are particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic stressors in the marine environment as they make lengthy migrations between foraging and breeding sites often along coastal migration corridors. Sea turtles face severe population pressure from humans, yet little is known about how movement and threats interact specifically for male sea turtles. To better understand male sea turtle movement, and the threats they encounter within their expansive ranges, we tagged 40, adult male sea turtles …

Assessment Of Repeatability And Behavioral Syndromes In Genetically Distinct Clades Of Eastern Red-Backed Salamanders (Plethodon Cinereus), Kelsey Garner Jan 2022

Assessment Of Repeatability And Behavioral Syndromes In Genetically Distinct Clades Of Eastern Red-Backed Salamanders (Plethodon Cinereus), Kelsey Garner

Masters Theses

Animal personality implies limited behavioral plasticity and behavioral traits which are correlated across contexts. Correlated behaviors, sometimes referred to as behavioral syndromes, have the potential to inhibit behavioral traits from evolving independently. Limits on behavioral variation can influence a population’s ability to invade new geographic areas and exploit new niches. One way to explore such variation is to examine behavioral syndromes in genetically distinct populations of wide-ranging species that exhibit different dispersal pathways and distances. The personality-dependent dispersal syndrome suggests that certain traits, such as exploratory and risk-taking behavior, are correlated with dispersal success. The Eastern Red-backed Salamander (Plethodon …

The Body As The Temple Of God, Lareina Hingson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Metaphors occur when there is a contradiction in the senses of the words used that cause the text to be interpreted non-literally, as Paul Ricoeur has noted. The Apostle Paul’s letter to the Corinthians describing the body as a temple has been taken to be one such scriptural metaphor: “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? … know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19). As a metaphor, it is a strong one. The supposed …
