Interrelationships Of Systemic Changes In Hepatic Encephalopathy, Els Reuvekamp

Biology and Microbiology Graduate Students Plan B Research Projects

Hepatic encephalopathy is a temporary decline in mental function that is often associated with liver disease and/or portal-systemic disease. Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) symptoms can range from minor cognitive declines to coma and are known to result from excess ammonia accumulations in the blood stream subsequent to liver failure. While HE is known to result from hepatobiliary disorder, many of the physiological process underlying its development and progression remain to be elucidated. Recent studies have identified neurological, metabolic, and microbiome changes implicated in the disease state of HE. In this review, the roles of traditional pharmaceutical interventions and newly developing understandings …

Western Herbalism: What Drives Individuals Within Rhode Island To Study This Ancient Healing Modality?, Kyla Shea

Student Publications

People globally rely on herbal practices as their main form of healing, yet few people in the West understand how to properly identify and effectively use herbs. This loss of knowledge regarding traditional healing practices was done so intentionally during enslavement and colonization, resulting in exploitation and misinterpretation of herbal practices. By reclaiming this knowledge, it is not only a way to improve the health of communities and the land, but it is also a way of reclaiming ancestral traditions and connection with oneself. Furthermore, this research paper explores the complexities of Western herbalism and determines what drives individuals within …

What Is More Effective: Corticosteroid Injections Or Platelet Rich Plasma Infections In The Treatment Of Lateral Epicondylitis?, Joseph Mohr, Curt Stilp, Justin Gambini

Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)

ABSTRACT

Lateral epicondylitis is a common degenerative tendinopathy that affects a wide variety of individuals. One patient population that often suffers more than others are workers with manual labor jobs that use vibrating tools and repetitive motions.1 Procedural costs and disease burden associated with lateral epicondylitis have increased in recent years.3 Current treatment of lateral epicondylitis using corticosteroid injections is beginning to fall out of favor. Corticosteroid injections help decrease inflammation; however, research looking into the histology of lateral epicondylitis favors more of a degenerative tendinopathy rather than an inflammatory condtion.1 In addition, several studies have found corticosteroid injections to …

Protonation And Non-Innocent Ligand Behavior In Pyranopterin Dithiolene Molybdenum Complexes, Cassandra Gates, Haley Varnum, Catherine Getty, Natalie Loui, Ju Chen, Martin L. Kirk, Jing Yang, Sharon J. Nieter Burgmayer

Chemistry Faculty Research and Scholarship

The complex [TEA][Tp*MoIV(O)(S2BMOPP)] (1) [TEA = tetraethylammonium, Tp* = tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)hydroborate, and BMOPP = 6-(3-butynyl-2-methyl-2-ol)-2-pivaloyl pterin] is a structural analogue of the molybdenum cofactor common to all pyranopterin molybdenum enzymes because it possesses a pyranopterin-ene-1,2-dithiolate ligand (S2BMOPP) that exists primarily in the ring-closed pyrano structure as a resonance hybrid of ene-dithiolate and thione-thiolate forms. Compound 1, the protonated [Tp*MoIV(O)(S2BMOPP-H)] (1-H) and one-electron-oxidized [Tp*MoV(O)(S2BMOPP)] [1-Mo(5+)] species have been studied using a combination of electrochemistry, electronic absorption, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Additional insight into the nature of these molecules has been derived from electronic structure computations. Differences in dithiolene C–S bond …

Ferrihydrite Enrichment In The Rhizosphere Of Unsaturated Soil Improves Nutrient Retention While Limiting Arsenic And Uranium Plant Uptake, Arindam Malakar, Daniel D. Snow, Michael Kaiser, Jordan Shields, Bijesh Maharjan, Harkamal Walia, Daran Rudnick, Chittaranjan Ray

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

Improvement of nutrient use efficiency and limiting trace elements such as arsenic and uranium bioavailability is critical for sustainable agriculture and food safety. Arsenic and uranium possess different properties and mobility in soils, which complicates the effort to reduce their uptake by plants. Here, we postulate that unsaturated soil amended with ferrihydrite nanominerals leads to improved nutrient retention and helps reduce uptake of these geogenic contaminants. Unsaturated soil is primarily oxic and can provide a stable environment for ferrihydrite nanominerals. To demonstrate the utility of ferrihydrite soil amendment, maize was grown in an unsaturated agricultural soil that is known to …

What’S A Guanaco?: Tracing The Llama Diaspora Through And Beyond South America, Emily Wakild Jan 2022

What’S A Guanaco?: Tracing The Llama Diaspora Through And Beyond South America, Emily Wakild

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Let us begin with Spook the llama. Spook lived in the animal enclosures at New York’s Central Park Zoo in 1912. Caretakers described Spook as a “morose, cantankerous” soul inhabiting the back of the deer range. Initially forlorn by this location, he looked out the back door at the road that circled past the pen. The busy street proved entertaining as it was full of noisy automobiles and anxious drivers honking. Spook watched the cars and, before long, learned to honk. Or so reported the head keeper at the zoo, Bill Snyder, who claimed “Spook thrust his head forward, drew …

Mechanisms Of Progestin Resistance In Reproductive-Age Women With Atypical Endometrial Hyperplasia, Katherine Mcmaster Cooke Jan 2022

Mechanisms Of Progestin Resistance In Reproductive-Age Women With Atypical Endometrial Hyperplasia, Katherine Mcmaster Cooke

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

With the rising prevalence of endometrial cancer and its precursor atypical hyperplasia (AH) in reproductive-age women amid the obesity epidemic, understanding the pathogenesis of this disease process is crucial to improving medical management. We sought to identify factors that may contribute to progestin-resistant AH via analysis of clinical data as well as investigation of hormonal regulation of endometrial gene and protein expression. We conducted a retrospective review of women with AH (n=63) compared to those with benign hyperplasia (BH) (n=73), which has a significantly lower risk of progression to malignant disease. Subsequently, we analyzed a sub-cohort of women with progestin-responsive …

Benjamin Percy And Queer Ecomasculinities: Ideas Of The Short Story From Hemingway To The Present, Thomas Edward Hahn Jan 2022

Benjamin Percy And Queer Ecomasculinities: Ideas Of The Short Story From Hemingway To The Present, Thomas Edward Hahn

Theses and Dissertations

The 21st Century has ushered in a need to problemetize and challenge traditional boundaries between social and philosophical realms. It is therefore more important now than ever to revisit the classification of literary genres, specially the short story. Through the intersection of queer, literary, and ecocritical theory, this book reexamines the current identity of the contemporary American short story in order to posit that it is a queer formation, a hybrid of both the novel and the poem, among the generic literary landscape. Through this queer literary form, the short story subsequently has the ironic potential to reveal insight into …

Refugia Gardening: A Good Anthropocene Begins At Home, Robin Kollar, David S. Koetje Jan 2022

Refugia Gardening: A Good Anthropocene Begins At Home, Robin Kollar, David S. Koetje

Summer Research

Our present age is often called the Anthropocene, an era dominated by human activities that erode biodiversity and ecological functions, altering natural systems and cycles. As a result, we are causing climate and mass extinction crises and undermining the ecosystem services that enable human flourishing. Thus, humans have moral and existential obligations to reverse this trend by realigning our relationships with nature. We are advocating for refugia gardening to build places of renewal in our own yards and in our communities. Refugia are pockets of life where species can survive and adapt during ecological crises. Refugia become “seeds” for repopulating …

Preferential Infection Of Ccr6+ Cd4+ T Cells By Hiv Is Increased By Human Intestinal Endothelial Cells, Fisher Pham, Jessica Eddy, Nathan Dapprich, Anding Shen

Summer Research

Th17 cells are found to be heavily depleted in the gut of HIV patients. Even after successful antiretroviral therapy, HIV patients exhibit a smaller Th17 population for years after treatment. Previous research has found human intestinal endothelial cells (IEC) to increase HIV infection of helper T cells. Using CCR6 as a marker for Th17, we investigated the effect of IEC on HIV infection of Th17 cells. IECs were found to increase the preferential infection of resting and activated CCR6+ cells. Th17 cells are known to be more susceptible to HIV infection than other types of CD4+ T cells. IEC stimulation …

Cysteine-Tyrosine Crosslink Synthesis In Bf4112 From B. Fragilis, Alex Van Uffelen, Sophie Hruska, David Benson

Summer Research

Redox-active crosslinked amino acids are a class of post-translational modifications that extend protein chemistry. These cofactors occur in fifteen known proteins with high resolution Xray crystallography as the primary method for confirmation. One of those proteins is cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV), where HisTyr (figure 1) is responsible for the high-valent oxidative intermediate in O2 reduction to 2H2O. Cys-Tyr was the first of these cofactors to be identified and is characterized in galactose oxidase (coordinated to a Cu ion) and cysteine dioxygenase (distal to a mononuclear non-heme iron ion).
