The Intersection Of Traumatic Brain Injury And Homelessness, Stephanie A. Chassman
The Intersection Of Traumatic Brain Injury And Homelessness, Stephanie A. Chassman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The rates of TBI are significantly higher among individuals experiencing homelessness compared to the general population. Up to half of individuals experiencing homelessness may have a TBI. Accurate prevalence rates of TBI among individuals experiencing homelessness are difficult to obtain due to different methods of sampling participants and differing definitions of TBI; therefore, estimates may be underrepresented. Despite past research that has examined the relationship between TBI and homelessness, there are specific gaps in knowledge such as correlates and risk factors of TBI among individuals experiencing homelessness. This three-manuscript dissertation attempts to address these gaps in knowledge.
The first manuscript …
Developing, Refining, And Testing The Intersectional Model Of Service Use: A Transgender And Nonbinary-Specific Model Of Healthcare Access, Jarrod Call
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Transgender and nonbinary (TNB) people are more likely to experience negative health outcomes than cisgender (i.e., not TNB) people, but less likely to access healthcare services due to the systemic forces of transphobia and cisgenderism. Despite this, there are few theoretical models of healthcare access specifically designed for TNB people. This three-paper dissertation addresses this gap by developing, refining, and testing the Intersectional Model of Service Use (IMSU), a population-specific framework for researching TNB healthcare access. Manuscript one describes how the initial IMSU was developed from an integrative review of currently available TNB healthcare access literature. This initial IMSU was …
Extracellular Vesicles And Lipid Flippase Regulators In C. Elegans, Lauren Pitts
Extracellular Vesicles And Lipid Flippase Regulators In C. Elegans, Lauren Pitts
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membrane derived organelles released by all cell types and carry a vast array of cargos that can influence communication, development, and disease. One type of EV, known as microvesicles, form by budding directly from the plasma membrane in a process known as ectocytosis, however the mechanisms that govern this process are poorly understood. In C. elegans, the P4-ATPase, TAT-5, along with its activator, PAD-1, inhibit EV release from the plasma membrane by inhibiting phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) exposure on the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane. We identified 3 key domains of PAD-1 that are required to inhibit …
Structural And Hemodynamic Analysis Of Transcatheter Aortic Valves, Dong Qiu
Structural And Hemodynamic Analysis Of Transcatheter Aortic Valves, Dong Qiu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure has become a well-established procedure for high, intermediate-risk, and low-risk patients. However, there is limited clinical data on the TAV's long-term durability, unlike SAV devices. Computational simulations can be an alternative way to evaluate the TAV devices. This dissertation aims to conduct structural and hemodynamic analyses on the TAV devices under different conditions using computational simulation approaches.
Initially, the impact of the bicuspid aortic valve on the TAV devices was evaluated. The result indicated that the CoreValve-like supra-annular self-expandable device was likely to have increased stress and strain on the leaflet when it …
Outdoor Early Intervention Services: Current Practices And Future Directions, Tiffany Lee
Outdoor Early Intervention Services: Current Practices And Future Directions, Tiffany Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Outdoor play is a crucial in supporting child development, resiliency, social skills, creative thinking, adaptability, family growth, and family engagement. Unfortunately, children are spending less time outside because of technology, parent fears, and other factors. Parents who have a child with a disability have even more challenges when it comes to playing outside. Thus, children with disabilities are spending even less time in outdoor environments. Early Intervention (EI) is a program that is designed for infants and toddlers between the ages of zero to three that have developmental delays and/or disabilities. EI uses a family-center approach in natural environments to …
Evaluating The Impact Of Individual And Couple Relationship Education On Postpartum Depression, Maggie O’Reilly Treter
Evaluating The Impact Of Individual And Couple Relationship Education On Postpartum Depression, Maggie O’Reilly Treter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation evaluated the impact of relationship education on postpartum depression using data from two randomized controlled trials of relationship education for individuals and couples who were pregnant or recently had a baby. Paper 1 focused on a well-established relationship education program for low-income couples in Oklahoma City, Family Expectations. Key findings from Paper 1 demonstrated that being randomized to Family Expectations was associated with lower odds of experiencing depression in the first 12 months after having a baby among both mothers and fathers, though this effect was only marginally significant, and that the program had the strongest impact among …
Pulmonary Valve Replacement, Mina Shafiei
Pulmonary Valve Replacement, Mina Shafiei
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Currently, transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement (TPVR) is a well-established alternative for surgical pulmonary valve replacement (SPVR) to treat pulmonary valve disorders in patients with prior congenital heart surgery. Edwards Sapien 3 valve is a bioprosthesis originally designed for the aortic position but has been used off-label in native right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT). It is currently under clinical trial to get food and drug administration (FDA) approval.
This study is a comparison of the performance of Sapien 3 with surgical bioprosthetics. The in vitro tests result showed Sapien 3 experiences less degree of opening and effective orifice area in pulmonic …
Environmental Gradients Impact Key Leaf Traits In Riparian Trees, Amanda Malone
Environmental Gradients Impact Key Leaf Traits In Riparian Trees, Amanda Malone
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Specific leaf area (SLA) reflects a plant’s carbon investment per area and relates to generalized leaf economics spectrum growth strategies (LES). To fill gaps of knowledge about intraspecific SLA variation and why it is often inconsistent with the LES, we studied the response of two riparian tree species along the urban-rural gradient in Northeastern Colorado: an invasive, nitrogen-fixer with broad tolerances and a nitrogen-limited and shade-intolerant native. Despite these differences, the two species responded similarly, apart from the response to the urban-rural gradient, in which lower nitrogen in rural areas was associated with a more conservative strategy in the native …

Well-Being Development: Parents’ Perceptions Of Gifted Adolescents, Barbara Moncure Washington
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine parents’ perceptions of well-being development in their gifted adolescents. This was a qualitative study that used Narrative Inquiry as a research approach. Cloninger’s (1993) Psychobiological Model of Temperament and Character the (TCI) and Clandinin and Connelley’s (2000) Three-Dimensional Narrative Inquiry Space were utilized to address the research questions: What are parents’ perceptions of temperament in their gifted adolescent? What are parents’ perceptions of character in their gifted adolescent? What are the parents’ perceptions of well-being development? Dabrowski’s Theory of Positive Disintegration (TPD) provided an analysis lens for the study.
The framework for …
The Pathophysiological Mechanisms Of Alzheimer's Disease; Investigating Therapeutic Interventions For Disease Onset, Alexandra A. Sandberg
The Pathophysiological Mechanisms Of Alzheimer's Disease; Investigating Therapeutic Interventions For Disease Onset, Alexandra A. Sandberg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Alzheimer’s Disease is a multifarious disease that progressively affects more people as both the proportion of older adults in the population and life expectancy increase in both the United States and worldwide. This devastating disease is a result of rampant neuronal loss in the memory centers of the brain that robs the independence of those who are diagnosed and places a heavy burden on those who care for them. Traditionally speaking, research has focused on the hallmark pathology of amyloid plaques, targeting them to try and prevent disease onset. However, countless failures in clinical trials aimed at this said pathology …
Dynamics And Turnover Of Lipid And Protein Domains In Cells And Supported Bilayers, Alan Weisgerber
Dynamics And Turnover Of Lipid And Protein Domains In Cells And Supported Bilayers, Alan Weisgerber
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Protein and lipid clustering is an important mechanism for cell processes such as exo- and endo-cytosis and creating functional signaling complexes. It has been seen that both lipids and proteins are involved with the formation of cluster domains on cell membranes, yet little is known about the interplay between the two. In this work I began with visualizing lipid sorting to artificially induced curvature in supported lipid bilayers, with lipid tails affecting the sorting differently to curvature. These results demonstrate that lipids sort to curvature on curved, supported lipid bilayers. The sorting depends on the number of lipids in the …

There's A Duwende On My Shelf: The Parapsychological Studies Of Fr. Jaime C. Bulatao, Sj, Carl Lorenz Cervantes
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
In the Filipino transpersonal worldview, the mind is not contained within the brain, and is often projected onto the world as “spirits”. Studying these cultural metaphors may allow for a deeper understanding of the Filipino psyche. Fr. Jaime C. Bulatao, SJ, one of the founders of the Psychological Association of the Philippines, studied the projections of the Filipino psyche as they manifested in paranormal phenomena. Bulatao provides the metaphor of eggs frying in a pan as a framework to understand this: the egg whites fuse despite the yolks being far apart. It is in the dissolution of boundaries that transpersonal …
Life Before Birth: A Thematic Analysis Of Memories Of Coming Into Life Part 2: Recollections Of Fetal Life And Birth, Jenny Wade
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This article examines a second set of data produced in a thematic analysis of 68 “earliest memory” narratives submitted to an independent website to explore the question: what do people who claim to remember how they came into the world say about their experience prior to and including birth? Part 1 examined the first and largest subset of the data, narratives of an otherworldly existence consistent with Western reincarnation intermission stage 2 experiences, near-death experience accounts and mythic traditions. This article thematically analyzes descriptions of life in the womb, birth, and apparently veridical out-of-body and other paranormal impressions of events …
Unexpected Side Effects: A Cautionary Note On Challenges Of Persistent Self-Transcendence, Elizabeth D. Stephens, Harris L. Friedman
Unexpected Side Effects: A Cautionary Note On Challenges Of Persistent Self-Transcendence, Elizabeth D. Stephens, Harris L. Friedman
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Self-transcendence is an ambiguous construct without consensual meaning, yet many claim that it relates to, or even causes, beneficial outcomes. Few discuss its potential deleterious side effects, choosing to focus primarily on positive effects. However, anything with sufficient potency to heal may have unintended side effects, especially when it leads beyond a transitory state to becoming an enduring trait, such as when self-transcendence (ST) becomes persistent self-transcendence (PST). With PST, evidence is overviewed here, along with two illustrative case reports, that people can suffer emotional difficulties, motivation changes, loss of self-reflexivity, anhedonia, dissociation, depersonalization, memory problems, and other psychological concerns. …
Emotion And Judgment In Young Women Of A Society In Transition, Maura A. E. Pilotti, Khadija El Alaoui
Emotion And Judgment In Young Women Of A Society In Transition, Maura A. E. Pilotti, Khadija El Alaoui
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
The present study asked whether emotional responses to narratives of moral transgressions are shaped by the reader’s assumed relationship with the injured party (i.e., oneself, familiar other, and unfamiliar other). Its goal was to test a cultural, religious, and individualistic account of such responses in young females of a traditional society in transition towards a sustainable integration into the global economy. To this end, female college students from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia were asked to identify their emotional reaction to each of several moral transgressions, report its intensity and then judge the severity of the transgression. In agreement with …

Education Abroad For Students With Disabilities: Legal Implications, Heidi Fischer
Education Abroad For Students With Disabilities: Legal Implications, Heidi Fischer
BYU Education & Law Journal
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, United States (U.S.) student participation in education abroad (EA) programs increased by more than thirty percent over a ten-year span.1 During the 2018-19 academic year, more than 36,000 students studying abroad identified as students with disabilities (nearly ten percent).2 The steady rise in U.S. student participation in EA programs in the past decade not only suggests renewed post-pandemic growth, but it also supports the idea that greater quantities of students with disabilities will study abroad during their postsecondary education than in previous years. With nearly one in five undergraduate students identifying as having a dis-ability,3 …

President Of The United States, Destroyer Of Worlds: Considering Congress's Authority To Enact A Nuclear No-First-Use Law, John Ramming Chappell
President Of The United States, Destroyer Of Worlds: Considering Congress's Authority To Enact A Nuclear No-First-Use Law, John Ramming Chappell
American University National Security Law Brief
This article argues that Congress can exercise its constitutional war powers to enact a law restricting the President from using nuclear weapons first. The article contends that using a nuclear weapon is qualitatively different from conventional warfare and that the first use of nuclear weapons marks a decision to enter into war. Therefore, nuclear first use is not a battlefield decision within the President’s commander in chief power but rather a choice to enter the United States into a new type of conflict that could pose a direct, immediate, and existential threat to the U.S. homeland. Regulating that decision falls …

Characterizing Mouse Line-1 5’Utr Antisense Promoter Activities, Jada Nicole Tschetter
Characterizing Mouse Line-1 5’Utr Antisense Promoter Activities, Jada Nicole Tschetter
Schultz-Werth Award Papers
Mice are often the model of choice for genomic research because of their high similarity to the human genome and relatively easy maintenance. Thus, understanding the mechanisms and principles of their genome is vital to advancing our knowledge about human biology. Long interspersed elements type 1 (LINE-1s or L1s) are transposable elements within mammalian DNA. Promoter activities have been identified for the human L1 5’ untranslated region (5’UTR) in both the sense and antisense orientation, but it was previously unknown if mouse L1 5’UTRs have antisense promoter activity. The goal of my project was to uncover mouse L1 5’UTR promoter …

Interrelationships Of Systemic Changes In Hepatic Encephalopathy, Els Reuvekamp
Biology and Microbiology Graduate Students Plan B Research Projects
Hepatic encephalopathy is a temporary decline in mental function that is often associated with liver disease and/or portal-systemic disease. Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) symptoms can range from minor cognitive declines to coma and are known to result from excess ammonia accumulations in the blood stream subsequent to liver failure. While HE is known to result from hepatobiliary disorder, many of the physiological process underlying its development and progression remain to be elucidated. Recent studies have identified neurological, metabolic, and microbiome changes implicated in the disease state of HE. In this review, the roles of traditional pharmaceutical interventions and newly developing understandings …
