Priority Setting And Funding Of Agricultural Research, M. Petit
Priority Setting And Funding Of Agricultural Research, M. Petit
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Agricultural research funding amounts and modalities have been profoundly transformed in recent years in many countries. For instance, competitive funding has become the norm rather than the exception in most countries and funding sources have been greatly diversified. In addition, in some major countries, the private sector has become a major actor In agricultural research, both as a funder of research and as a provider research results. This poses a major challenge to public research institutions, which remain the major agricultural research actors and employers of researchers in most countries. With these changes in funding, formal procedures for research priority-setting …

The Last Continuous Grasslands On Earth: Identification And Conservation Importance, Rheinhardt Scholtz, Dirac L. Twidwell Jr
The Last Continuous Grasslands On Earth: Identification And Conservation Importance, Rheinhardt Scholtz, Dirac L. Twidwell Jr
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Grasslands are the most threatened and least protected biome. Yet, no study has been conducted to identify the last remaining continuous grasslands on Earth. Here, we used World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifications to measure the degree of intactness remaining for the world's grassland ecoregions. This analysis revealed three findings of critical conservation importance. First, only a few large, intact grasslands remain. Second, every continent with a grassland ecoregion considered in this study contains at least one relatively intact grassland ecoregion. Third, the largest remaining continuous grasslands identified in this analysis have persisted …

Chaotic Dynamics In The 2d System Of Nonsmooth Ordinarydifferential Equations, Zain-Aldeen S. A. Rahman, Basil H. Jasim, Yasir I. A. Al-Yasir
Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics
Over the last decade, the chaotic behaviors of dynamical systems have been extensively explored.Recently, discovering or developing a 2D system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) capable of exhibitingchaotic dynamical behaviors is an attractive research topic. In this study, a chaotic system with a 2D system ofnonsmooth ODEs has been developed. This system is can exhibit chaotic dynamical behaviors. Its main dynamicalbehaviors, including time-series trajectories, phase portraits of attractors, and equilibria and their stability, have beeninvestigated. The developed system has been verified by an excessive variety of fascinating chaotic behaviors, such aschaotic attractor, symmetry, sensitivity to initial conditions (ICs), fractal dimension, …

Evaluation Algorithms Based On Fuzzy C-Means For The Dataclustering Of Cancer Gene Expression, Omar Al- Anabee, Basad Al Sarray
Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics
The influx of data in bioinformatics is primarily in the form of DNA, RNA, and protein sequences. This condition places a significant burden on scientists and computers. Some genomics studies depend on clusteringtechniques to group similarly expressed genes into one cluster. Clustering is a type of unsupervised learning thatcan be used to divide unknown cluster data into clusters. The k-means and fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithms areexamples of algorithms that can be used for clustering. Consequently, clustering is a common approach that dividesan input space into several homogeneous zones; it can be achieved using a variety of algorithms. This study usedthree models …

In responding to the international need for a circular economy, The Renewal Workshop (TRW) expanded its operations by opening a second factory in Amsterdam, The Netherlands in 2019. Much of the success of TRW, since its inception in Oregon in 2016, was due to its innovation in supply chain process. TRW incorporated novel solutions of renewing damaged apparel and upcycling overstock products, and consulted brands on ways to design for deconstruction. As the effectiveness of TRW becomes evident and demand grows internationally, it is facing some unexpected challenges. Students will need to reconsider positioning and communication strategy of The Renewal …

The Psychological Impact Of Sharps Injuries Sustained By Medical Students, Kevin Hambridge
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Much is known and reported about sharps injuries among healthcare workers, but there has been a lack of published evidence regarding the psychological impact of sharps injuries among medical students. The purpose of this narrative review was to discover the psychological impact of sharps injuries within the medical student population. Medical, health and psychology databases were searched for studies written in the English language and published between 1980 and 2021. The review identified six studies conducted in six countries which described the psychological impacts of sharps injuries among medical students as being fear, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. The …

As modern medicine began to emerge at the turn of the 20th century, glycan-based therapies advanced. DNA- and protein-centered therapies became widely available. The research and development of structurally defined carbohydrates have led to new tools and methods that have sparked interest in the therapeutic applications of glycans. One of the latest omics disciplines to emerge in the contemporary post-genomics age is glycomics. In addition, to providing hope for patients and people with different health conditions through a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of common complex diseases, this new specialty in system sciences has much to offer to communities involved …

Dilemma: Increase In Human Food Production Or Use Of Grasslands For Environmental And / Or Social Purposes, A. D. Meister
Dilemma: Increase In Human Food Production Or Use Of Grasslands For Environmental And / Or Social Purposes, A. D. Meister
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In the title for this paper we find three major objectives: to feed the world, sustain the environment and provide resources for social purposes, and a dilemma. Even though the word ‘dilemma’ usually implies choice between undesirable alternatives, it is obvious that the alternatives here are not undesirable. Is the dilemma then, that we can only do one at the time, or that the consequences of favouring one over the other can lead to undesirable outcomes? It is my opinion that we are talking about the latter interpretation. It is the foreclosing of options by allowing one objective to dominate …
The Development And Prospect Of Chinese Grassland Economic System, Fuzeng H.
The Development And Prospect Of Chinese Grassland Economic System, Fuzeng H.
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
China is a country with an old agriculture civilization of the world. The arrangement of the crop and pasture area had developed from Han and Tang dynasty. (From A.C 206.to AD 907). Chinese livestock economic had undergone the winding development for a thousand years of feudal society, however, It still belong to a phase of the loose private ownership. From 1949 when The People's Republic of China was founded, the pasture was nationalized and collective management. Since 1980s, the planned economic changed into the market economic gradually. The pasture was public ownership, but management by contract, paid utilization and unchanged …
Contextual Factors In The Management Of Common Grazing Lands: Lessons From Mongolia And Northwestern China, R. Mearns
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Seen in a global perspective, pastoral development is now increasingly motivated by social and environmental objectives rather than by production- or output-orientated objectives. Attention is shifting towards a broader concern with sustainability, both of grasslands, and of the livelihoods of those who rely on them (de Haan et al, 1997, Fratkin and Mearns forthcoming). Quite how these twin sustainability objectives may be achieved in particular contexts, however, is an empirical question. Drawing on examples from a diverse range of natural grassland-based livestock production systems under economic transition in Mongolia and northwestern China, this summary paper aims to show how an …
De-Intensification Of Grasslands: Understanding The Processes To Find The Balance, K. C. Hodgkinson
De-Intensification Of Grasslands: Understanding The Processes To Find The Balance, K. C. Hodgkinson
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
There is a growing trend in Australia and other developed countries for deintensification of animal production from grasslands and for grasslands to be used for purposes other than livestock grazing. These shifts are occurring for a variety of reasons including unsustainable land management practices, environmental pollution, loss of conservation value, poor commodity prices and declining rural infra-structure and communities. In Australia, the shifts are under way in agricultural grasslands, where sown pastures occur in a matrix of semi-natural woodlands, but less so in the other three major natural grasslands that forms the arid and semi-arid rangelands.
The conversion of natural …
De-Intensification Of Grasslands: Current State And Trends, Michael Duru, Bernard Hubert
De-Intensification Of Grasslands: Current State And Trends, Michael Duru, Bernard Hubert
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
De-intensified use of grasslands, and more generally of the livestock systems they support, has been triggered by a growing sensitivity of citizens to environmental quality (nitrogen) and quality of animal products, and by the warnings addressed to political authorities by scientists about the environmental consequences of economic imbalances (decreasing biodiversity, drop in soil fertility, greenhouse effect), and in particular of food overproduction in Europe.
From an ecological standpoint, grassland de-intensification must be envisaged whenever the techniques implemented disrupt resource sustainability. The grassland resource itself may be at risk when a rate of vegetation offtake by herbivores that is incompatible with …

Boswellia sacra Flueck (family Burseraceae) tree is wounded to produce frankincense. We report its de novo assembled genome (667.8 Mb) comprising 18,564 high-confidence protein-encoding genes. Comparing conserved single-copy genes across eudicots suggest >97% gene space assembly of B. sacra genome. Evolutionary history shows B. sacra gene-duplications derived from recent paralogous events and retained from ancient hexaploidy shared with other eudicots. The genome indicated a major expansion of Gypsy retroelements in last 2 million years. The B. sacra genetic diversity showed four clades intermixed with a primary genotype—dominating most resin-productive trees. Further, the stemtranscriptome revealed that wounding concurrently activates phytohormones signaling, …

Isoform switching events with predicted functional consequences are common in many cancers, but characterization of switching events in esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) is lacking. Next-generation sequencing was used to detect levels of RNA transcripts and identify specific isoforms in treatment- naïve esophageal tissues ranging from premalignant Barrett’s esophagus (BE), BE with low- or high-grade dysplasia (BE.LGD, BE.HGD), and EAC. Samples were stratified by histopathology and TP53 mutation status, identifying significant isoform switching events with predicted functional consequences. Comparing BE.LGD with BE.HGD, a histopathology linked to cancer progression, isoform switching events were identified in 75 genes including KRAS, RNF128, and WRAP53. Stratification …

Leukocytosis is a common finding in patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and portends a poor prognosis. Interleukin 1-β regulates leukopoiesis and pre-clinical studies suggest that anakinra (recombinant human interleukin-1 [IL-1] receptor antagonist) suppresses leukocytosis in myocardial infarction. However, the effect of IL-1 blockade with anakinra on leukocyte count in patients with STEMI is unknown. We reviewed the white blood cell (WBC) and differential count of 99 patients enrolled in a clinical trial of anakinra (n = 64) versus placebo (n = 35) for 14 days after STEMI. A complete blood cell count with differential count were obtained at …

Calpain 1 and 2 (CPN1/2) are calcium-dependent cysteine proteases that exist in cytosol and mitochondria. Pharmacologic inhibition of CPN1/2 decreases cardiac injury during ischemia (ISC)–reperfusion (REP) by improving mitochondrial function. However, the protein targets of CPN1/2 activation during ISC–REP are unclear. CPN1/2 include a large subunit and a small regulatory subunit 1 (CPNS1). Genetic deletion of CPNS1 eliminates the activities of both CPN1 and CPN2. Conditional cardiomyocyte specific CPNS1 deletion mice were used in the present study to clarify the role of CPN1/2 activation in mitochondrial damage during ISC–REP with an emphasis on identifying the potential protein targets of CPN1/2. …

Food is fundamental to life. It is also fundamental to culture; through our production, manipulation and consumption of foodstuffs, the way in which we eat has amassed a range of rituals and rules. This suggests that food can be used to indicate more than mere biological need. Food and foodways are a common occurrence throughout literature, not least children’s literature. This thesis applies gastrocriticism as a paradigm to investigate the use of food and foodways in Enid Blyton’s Malory Towers, St. Clare’s and The Naughtiest Girl school series. Gastrocriticism is an emerging form of literary criticism that considers the complex …

The antimicrobial property is the key feature of active packaging. Biological macromolecules such as tannic and gallic acids are naturally found in plants such as tea, fruits, berries, and grapes. The incorporation of tannic acid (TA) and gallic acid (GA) in the biodegradable polymer blend Poly Lactide-Poly (Butylene Adipate-Co-Terephthalate) (PLA-PBAT) was used in this study to assess the potential of active packaging. TA and GA (10 wt%) composite films showed a 65%–66% increase in the UV barrier property. The tensile strength value increased after the incorporation of TA and GA (10 wt%), respectively. Overall, 1.67 and 2.2 log reductions in …

Gait analysis identifies the posture during movement in order to provide the correct actions for a normal gait. A person's gait may differ from others and can be recognized by specific patterns. Healthy individuals exhibit normal gait patterns, while lower limb amputees exhibit abnormal gait patterns. To better understand the pitfalls of gait, it is imperative to develop systems capable of capturing the gait patterns of healthy individuals. The main objective of this research was to introduce a new concept in gait analysis by computing the static and dynamic equilibrium in a real-world environment. A relationship was also presented among …

Many structures are used to age Silver Carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, but no consensus had been obtained concerning which structure is best. Previous studies have used sections from the pectoral spine, but some of those studies have used transmitted light to illuminate the annuli of the sectioned pectoral spine. We used reflected light to enhance the contrast of annuli in sectioned pectoral spines and compared the aging precision obtained from this method among 6 readers who varied in their aging experience. Overall precision as measure by the mean coefficient of variation (CV) was 5.23 ± 0.76SE, which compares well with …
