Conflict Of Allegiance: Professional Development Challenges In Transforming Science Teachers' Identities And Practices, Elizabeth B. Lewis Jan 2022

Conflict Of Allegiance: Professional Development Challenges In Transforming Science Teachers' Identities And Practices, Elizabeth B. Lewis

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Case studies of two biology teachers, Cathy and David, from the same minority-majority, urban U.S. high school, provide insights into their instructional practices while they engaged in long-term professional development (PD). Findings suggest why science teachers engaged with PD may, or may not, adopt more adaptive pedagogical approaches in the service of reform-based teaching. Gee’s institution- and affinity-identity constructs were used as analytic lenses regarding teachers’ perceptions of teaching, learning, and agency in the dual contexts of their school’s institutional environment and PD community. Over time, Cathy adopted more inquiry-based instructional practices she learned through PD seminars in building a …

RAS is a signaling protein associated with the cell membrane that is mutated in up to 30% of human cancers. RAS signaling has been proposed to be regulated by dynamic heterogeneity of the cell membrane. Investigating such a mechanism requires near-atomistic detail at macroscopic temporal and spatial scales, which is not possible with conventional computational or experimental techniques. We demonstrate here a multiscale simulation infrastructure that uses machine learning to create a scale-bridging ensemble of over 100,000 simulations of active wild-type KRAS on a complex, asymmetric membrane. Initialized and validated with experimental data (including a new structure of active wild-type …

Physiological responses to both natural and anthropogenic perturbations involve changes in glucose use and metabolism to enable animals to respond to challenges. The responses are at least partially mediated via the glucocorticoids, and the proper functioning of these systems are critical to animal health. Prolonged high-sugar diets in humans can compromise physiological functions and lead to a range of diseases including diabetes. Such outcomes are less common in natural, non-human systems, likely because of evolutionarily based balances between sugar intake and the ability to process it. Due to both landscape changes and human feeding of wildlife, the introduction of unnatural …

Exposure to research is known to play a positive role in undergraduate education. However, robust research responsibilities are oftentimes not formally incorporated into a student’s academic experience until master level studies. Further, a variety of intimidation factors often inhibit many undergraduate students from participating on a research team. In this case study, the research team evaluated a unique group of undergraduate researchers who matriculated to the same university after beginning to participate in research as concurrently enrolled students. Following matriculation, each student continued to participate in research throughout the entirety of their undergraduate studies. All of the study’s students were …

Rites–Christian And Non-Christian–In A Cosmic Liturgy Of Fraternity, Nihal Abeyasingha Jan 2022

Rites–Christian And Non-Christian–In A Cosmic Liturgy Of Fraternity, Nihal Abeyasingha

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

The present article starts from the Past-Present-Future dimensions of sacraments, to which Vagaggini has added the moral-dispositive element (commitment). These four dimensions within the Christian perspective can be analysed as (1) anamnesis, presentation of gifts and persons, (2) epiclesis, invoking Spirit to transform gifts and weld together persons, (3) eschatology, and (4) theosis. When applied in a non-Christian environment, one can expand these four elements in terms of (1) narration (memory), (2) presentation of themselves through whatever gestures, (3) fulfillment/maturation and, (4) generativity. Through this analysis, one can speak of even non-Christians being united in a cosmic liturgy in the …

Management-Intensive Grazing Impacts On Total Escherichia Coli, E. Coli O157: H7, And Antibiotic Resistance Genes In A Riparian Stream, Laura M. Rubeck, James E. Wells, Kathy Hanford, Lisa M. Durso, Walter H. Schacht, Elaine D. Berry

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The impacts of management-intensive grazing (MIG) of cattle on concentrations of total Escherichia coli, total suspended solids (TSS), and nitrate-nitrite nitrogen (NO3+NO2-N), and occurrence of E. coli O157:H7 and selected antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in stream water and/or sediments were evaluated. Cattle were grazed for twoweek periods in May in each of three years. Overall, grazing increased total E. coli in downstream water by 0.89 log10 MPN/100 mL (p < 0.0001), and downstream total E. coli concentrations were higher than upstream over all sampling intervals. Downstream TSS levels also increased (p ≤ 0.0294) during grazing. In contrast, there was …

Sars-Cov-2 Spreads Through Cell-To-Cell Transmission, Cong Zeng, John P Evans, Tiffany King, Yi-Min Zheng, Eugene M Oltz, Sean P J Whelan, Linda J Saif, Mark E Peeples, Shan-Lu Liu

Open Access Publications

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a highly transmissible coronavirus responsible for the global COVID-19 pandemic. Herein, we provide evidence that SARS-CoV-2 spreads through cell-cell contact in cultures, mediated by the spike glycoprotein. SARS-CoV-2 spike is more efficient in facilitating cell-to-cell transmission than is SARS-CoV spike, which reflects, in part, their differential cell-cell fusion activity. Interestingly, treatment of cocultured cells with endosomal entry inhibitors impairs cell-to-cell transmission, implicating endosomal membrane fusion as an underlying mechanism. Compared with cell-free infection, cell-to-cell transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is refractory to inhibition by neutralizing antibody or convalescent sera of COVID-19 patients. While angiotensin-converting …

Transcranial Stimulation Of Alpha Oscillations Up-Regulates The Default Mode Network, Kevin J Clancy, Jeremy A Andrzejewski, Yuqi You, Jens T Rosenberg, Mingzhou Ding, Wen Li

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The default mode network (DMN) is the most-prominent intrinsic connectivity network, serving as a key architecture of the brain's functional organization. Conversely, dysregulated DMN is characteristic of major neuropsychiatric disorders. However, the field still lacks mechanistic insights into the regulation of the DMN and effective interventions for DMN dysregulation. The current study approached this problem by manipulating neural synchrony, particularly alpha (8 to 12 Hz) oscillations, a dominant intrinsic oscillatory activity that has been increasingly associated with the DMN in both function and physiology. Using high-definition alpha-frequency transcranial alternating current stimulation (α-tACS) to stimulate the cortical source of alpha oscillations, …

Autophagosomes Fuse To Phagosomes And Facilitate The Degradation Of Apoptotic Cells In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Omar Peña-Ramos, Lucia Chiao, Xianghua Liu, Xiaomeng Yu, Tianyou Yao, Henry He, Zheng Zhou

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Autophagosomes are double-membrane intracellular vesicles that degrade protein aggregates, intracellular organelles, and other cellular components. During the development of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, many somatic and germ cells undergo apoptosis. These cells are engulfed and degraded by their neighboring cells. We discovered a novel role of autophagosomes in facilitating the degradation of apoptotic cells using a real-time imaging technique. Specifically, the double-membrane autophagosomes in engulfing cells are recruited to the surfaces of phagosomes containing apoptotic cells and subsequently fuse to phagosomes, allowing the inner vesicle to enter the phagosomal lumen. Mutants defective in the production of autophagosomes display significant …

Impact Of Edds Dosage On Lead Phytoextraction In Contaminated Urban Residential Soils, Zhiming Zhang, Dibyendu Sarkar, Virinder Sidhu, Manas Warke, Rupali Datta

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Lead (Pb) contamination in soils of residential properties due to peeling and chipping of Pb-based paint can cause human health problems. Phytoextraction is a green technology that has the potential to remediate soil Pb. The efficiency of phytoextraction is dependent on the geochemical forms of Pb in soil. A biodegradable chelating agent, ethylenediaminedisuccinic acid (EDDS), was previously shown to enhance Pb removal by facilitating phytoextraction. In this study, EDDS was tested at various concentrations for its potential in mobilizing Pb in urban residential soils in Jersey City, New Jersey, and San Antonio, Texas. Results show that the concentrations of plant-available …

Distributed Matrix Tiling Using A Hypergraph Labeling Formulation, Avah Banerjee, Maxwell Reeser, Guoli Ding Jan 2022

Distributed Matrix Tiling Using A Hypergraph Labeling Formulation, Avah Banerjee, Maxwell Reeser, Guoli Ding

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Partitioning large matrices is an important problem in distributed linear algebra computing, used in ML among others. Briefly, our goal is to perform a sequence of matrix algebra operations in a distributed manner on these large matrices. However, not all partitioning schemes work well with different matrix algebra operations and their implementations (algorithms). This is a type of data tiling problem. In this paper we consider a data tiling problem using hypergraphs. We prove some hardness results and give a theoretical characterization of its complexity on random instances. Additionally, we develop a greedy algorithm and experimentally show its efficacy.

The Analysis Of Results From Paired Paddock Comparisons, David R. Kemp, P. M. Dowling, D. L. Michalk, G. Millar Jan 2022

The Analysis Of Results From Paired Paddock Comparisons, David R. Kemp, P. M. Dowling, D. L. Michalk, G. Millar

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Paired-paddock comparisons are a common way of evaluating new grassland practices at a scale more relevant to farmers. They are also being used to replace or augment designed experiments and can be the only source of information available on a practice. However, it is often uncertain if the differences between paddocks are significant. Importantly, a current trend among funding organisations is to support paddock comparisons. The need for valid procedures to compare unreplicated treatments is increasingly urgent. It is suggested that a range of tools be used to infer statistical significance from using typical error values from related studies or …

Length And Width To Estimate Dry Mass Of Panicum Maximum Cv. Tanzânia Leaves, L. G. Barioni, P. M. Santos, A. Coldebella, M. Corsi

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

An analysis of the relationship of leaf length (LL) and leaf width (LW) with leaf dry weight (LDW) in Panicum maximum was carried out with the objective of improving estimations of tissue flow in that plant. Data was collected in a mob grazing experiment with 28 days grazing interval sampled the day before grazing in 9 grazing cycles. Regression analysis revealed highly significant effect (P < 0.001) of both LL and LW on LDW. A lack of fit test gave strong evidence of non-linear relationship of LDW with LL (p < 0.05), fitting the model 1 0 LDW = β0LLβ1 , while LW presented a linear relation with LDW. LL was a better predictor of LDW than LW. LL solely or in combination with LW produced equations with …

Sequential Injection Analysis: A Powerful Tool For Routine Soil And Plant Laboratories, A. R. A. Nogueira, F. V. Silva, M. Y. Kamogawa, G. B. Souza, L. F. M. Ferraz

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Sequential injection analysis (SIA) present attractive characteristics for analyses in large scale. In SIA the analytical determination can be performed automatically reducing the number of steps usually involved in a chemical analysis. In order to demonstrate the advantages found in the implementation of a SIA procedure in a laboratory dedicated to routine analyze, the determination of volatile nitrogen in silage and soil samples has been performed. The nitrogen content was determined after NH3 on-line separation in alkaline conditions by using a gaseous diffusion or a pervaporation unit for liquid-liquid separation. An ammonium tubular selective electrode detector was used for …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Remote sensing is an effective method for identifying potential feeding habitat zones. Spatial and temporal distribution patterns of albacore (ALB) tuna were studied using Taiwan longline fisheries data from 2009 to 2014. A generalized additive model (GAM) was used to compile a fishery database and statistically explore the relationship between distribution and environmental factors. Sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface chlorophyll-a concentration (SSC), sea surface salinity (SSS), sea surface height (SSH), mixed layer depth (MLD), and eddy kinetic energy (EKE) were examined. The results indicated SST as the largest contributor on ALB distribution, followed by SSS and SSC. Catches per …

Japanese Consumer Preference For Raw Fish: Best–Worst Scaling Method, Takahiro Sajiki, Yu-Heng Lu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Given the declining consumption of fish and shellfish in Japan, it is essential to better understand consumer needs to design policies that increase consumption. Therefore, we clarify the relative degree of importance Japanese consumers place on various attributes of raw fish during purchase based on a questionnaire survey employing best–worst scaling. We find that consumers prioritize freshness, price, taste, appearance, safety, seasonality, ease of cooking and eating, nutrition, origin, wild fish, and effect on natural environment and ecosystem, in that order. Wild fish has unexpectedly low importance, although Japanese consumers conventionally purchase captured fishery products rather than cultured ones. The …

Economic Conditions For New Entrants In Coastal Fishing In Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, Takahiro Sajiki, Yu-Heng Lu, Norie Nishiguchi, Sonomi Akamine, Masaharu Nishiguchi

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

A significant decrease in the number of fishery workers is be-coming a problem in Japan. For new entrants to become estab-lished in the region, they must be profitable as fishing busi-nesses. Using the case of Miyazaki prefecture in Japan, this paper identifies the economic conditions required to make longline fishing and bottom gillnet fishing profitable by ap-plying the net present value (NPV) method. When operating on 200 days, which is the guideline for new entrants in longline fishing, if the value of investment is less than 44.1% of the minimum required, the investment will not provide positive returns. However, the …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Garlic contains various nutrients and healthful ingredients. The content of garlic products is closely related to their processing methods, and each compound has specific biological effects. Allicin, a heat labile compound, is considered the most important factor in garlic. Garlic powder is commonly prepared by subjecting raw garlic to thermal processing before being grounded into powder, and it is of interest to compare the biological activity of garlic powder with raw garlic in fish. This study investigated immune effects of raw garlic and garlic powder on groupers (Epinephelus coioides). Although raw garlic and garlic powder did not promote growth performance of …

Asymptotic Numerical Solutions For Second-Order Quasilinear Singularly Perturbed Problems, Chein-Shan Liu, Chih-Wen Chang Jan 2022

Asymptotic Numerical Solutions For Second-Order Quasilinear Singularly Perturbed Problems, Chein-Shan Liu, Chih-Wen Chang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

For a second-order quasilinear singularly perturbed problem under the Dirichlet boundary conditions, we propose a new asymptotic numerical method, which involves two problems: a reduced problem with a one-side boundary condition and a novel boundary layer correction problem with a two-sided boundary condition. Through the introduction of two new variables, both problems are transformed to a set of three first-order initial value problems with zero initial conditions. The Runge–Kutta method is then applied to integrate the differential equations and to determine two unknown terminal values of the new variables until they converge. The modified asymptotic numerical solution satisfies the Dirichlet …

Simulation Of A Ship And Tension Leg Platform Wind Turbine Collision, Jiamin Guo, Yu Zhao, Weigang Chen, Guangeng Zhou Jan 2022

Simulation Of A Ship And Tension Leg Platform Wind Turbine Collision, Jiamin Guo, Yu Zhao, Weigang Chen, Guangeng Zhou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Collisions between ships and tension leg platform wind turbines (TLPWTs) result in the TLPWT damage, including tower damage and tension leg breakage. This paper details a collision between a ship and TLPWT simulated using the LS-DYNA software package. During simulation, the behaviors of the water around the ship and of the TLPWT were processed using the constant added mass and the fluid–structure interaction methods, respectively. The results indicate that the energy conversion during collision is generally consistent with the law of conversion of energy, suggesting that the simulation’s calculations are acceptable. The TLPWT simulation results imply that two distinct collisions …

Why Narrative Poetry Still Matters In Stylistics, Rachid Acim

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

In Morocco, debates over English language instruction have marginalized poetry as a distinct literary genre. The shortage of poetry events arguably makes poetry teaching both daunting and intimidating. Besides fostering trust, memorization, and empathy, helping students develop a penchant for English language, as well as humanity, poetry, and narrative poetry, in particular, proffers teachers ample opportunities to fully engage students in the learning process. Not only does it awaken their senses and make them establish connections but leads them to think in a critical way about the world around them. In this paper, the teaching of narrative poetry through the …
