Groundwater Law, The San Luis Valley, And Climate Change, Rachel Grabenstein
Groundwater Law, The San Luis Valley, And Climate Change, Rachel Grabenstein
Student Published Scholarship
A vast region of the western United States is in the grips of the first climate change-induced megadrought observed in the past 1,200 years.
This paper explores how climate change and the current groundwater legal regimes interact in Colorado’s San Luis Valley. The Valley was chosen as a case study because it is an example of a community that introduced voluntary measures to address the overuse of groundwater. This paper examines how those measures might have been sufficient if not for the additional challenge of climate change.
This paper will first explain the history of water management in the Valley. …
Beyond Bake Sales: Environmental Justice Through Superfund Removal Actions, Clifford Villa
Beyond Bake Sales: Environmental Justice Through Superfund Removal Actions, Clifford Villa
Faculty Scholarship
Few people outside of EPA seem to be aware of the existence of the Superfund removal program, a program through which millions of dollars are allocated through EPA’s ten regional offices each year for cleaning up contaminated sites that are not designated 'Superfund' sites. This essay will provide a basic introduction to the Superfund removal program and particularly encourage consideration of Superfund removals to address growing concerns for environmental justice. Part II examines the legal authorities and limitations of the Superfund removal program. Part III provides examples of removal actions in environmental justice communities across the country. Part IV considers …

Foreign Students Struggle At Usm During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Maegan Williams
Race, Gender, and Sexuality Symposium
The University of Southern Mississippi administration has failed to fully consider international students when implementing policies, deadlines and other plans during the coronavirus pandemic. As an international student herself, Williams has seen and experienced first-hand how inconsiderate Southern Miss has been towards international students during this pandemic, especially when it concerns matters that they cannot control such as travel bans and financing. The international building is branded with the quote "Above All Nations Is Humanity" but when international students needed help the most, they were hung out to dry. All of the international students she contacted for content in this …
Targeting The Roots Of The American Criminal Justice System And Its Modern-Day Manifestations Through The Historical Marginalization Of Black Americans, Adia Reed
Race, Gender, and Sexuality Symposium
Following the murder of George Floyd in late May of 2020 came a summer of heightened emotions and loud utterances of beliefs regarding police behavior and systemic racism. For many white Americans, this was a catalyst for deep self-inventories, personal growth, and the unlearning of dangerous prejudices and misconceptions. For Black Americans, however, this was simply another expression of normalized deadly behavior against their communities. The recent demands for transforming our legal system shed light on the malevolent origins of American policing. When identifying the unjust roots of the American legal system, modern-day manifestations of racially motivated practices, attitudes, and …

Harmful Algal Blooms In Caesar Creek Lake And Their Relationship To Riparian Cover, Morgan C. Grunden
Harmful Algal Blooms In Caesar Creek Lake And Their Relationship To Riparian Cover, Morgan C. Grunden
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Caesar Creek Lake (CCL) in Warren County, OH has recently been experiencing harmful algal blooms (HABs) which are most likely attributed to an excess of phosphorus (P) from fertilizers and manures applied to surrounding fields. Sediments act as a sink for P later supplying a source of P in lakes for HABs when waters become thermally stratified and anoxic. This study seeks to determine the relationship between HABs in CCL and riparian cover at the main tributaries, Anderson Fork and Caesar Creek. In order to do this, sediment samples were collected from four sample sites along Anderson Fork and three …
Domestic Morality, “Traditional Dogma”, And Christianity In A Rural Zambian Community, Bernhard Udelhoven
Domestic Morality, “Traditional Dogma”, And Christianity In A Rural Zambian Community, Bernhard Udelhoven
Zambia Social Science Journal
Hugo Hinfelaar described, for precolonial times, a comprehensive domestic religion and family spirituality which he called “traditional dogma” or “family dogma”. What is left of it in Zambia? When and for what purposes are traditional religious beliefs invoked today and scrutinised in marriage and the domestic sphere? While many say, “We have no culture left!” traditional dogma continues to function as a “moral grammar” that anchors cultural identity. The marital life of a couple becomes scrutinised along traditional beliefs during family crises. When people accept this scrutiny, they (re-)submit themselves under the wider family and thereby reconstitute the family under …

Seasonal Stem Loss And Self-Thinning In Low Marsh Spartina Alterniflora In A New England Tidal Marsh, Clara Chaisson, Chad C. Jones, R. Scott Warren
Seasonal Stem Loss And Self-Thinning In Low Marsh Spartina Alterniflora In A New England Tidal Marsh, Clara Chaisson, Chad C. Jones, R. Scott Warren
Botany Faculty Publications
Dense monocultures of the grass Spartina alterniflora dominate the low marsh in typical New England tidal marshes. These marshes provide a number of important ecosystem services; thus, it is important to understand the factors that influence S. alterniflora productivity. End of season live biomass is often used to estimate S. alterniflora productivity, but this measure fails to account for stems lost within the growing season and may lead to a significant underestimate. We explored two possible factors that may influence S. alterniflora stem loss within the growing season: 1) density-dependent mortality (self-thinning), and 2) the physical force of moving water …
The Chemical Characterization Of Microplastic Polymer Composition From Various Littoral Environments On Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Leah Kosovsky
The Chemical Characterization Of Microplastic Polymer Composition From Various Littoral Environments On Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Leah Kosovsky
Chemistry Honors Papers
The increasing abundance of microplastic pollution in marine environments is a rising concern, and it has the potential to negatively affect the health and sustainability of marine organisms and ecosystems. Microplastics can harm organisms through a variety of chemical, biological, and physical mechanisms. The extent to which they are harmful varies greatly and is significantly dependent on the chemical and physical makeup of the plastic polymer. Due to this variability, it is important to characterize microplastic samples in various environments to better understand the risks associated with the debris in certain areas. Through field research, a spatial analysis of the …

A Life Worth Living: Evaluating And Assisting Army Chaplains In Suicide Prevention, John Simon Cochran
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Despite its efficiency and flexibility as a modern fighting force, the U.S. Army has experienced an alarming spike in the number of its soldiers committing suicide over the past decade – approximately a 20% increase. The goal of this project is to contribute to the lessening of future suicides by evaluating the current preparedness of U.S. Army chaplains to assist with suicide prevention and intervention efforts among U.S. Army soldiers. The study will provide actionable conclusions of how chaplains can more effectively identify, intervene, and influence U.S. Army soldiers away from the risk of suicide towards a life worth living.
Impact Of The Level Of Parental Involvement In Occupational Therapy Services On Patient Outcomes For Children Ages 0-3 In The Outpatient Setting, Lauren Hackl
OT Student Capstones
This project aims to analyze the relationship between parent involvement in OT services and patient outcomes for children ages 0-3 in the outpatient setting. This project involves both therapist and parent interactions with the administration of surveys over the span of a 14-week period to measure parental involvement. Standardized assessment scores were used throughout the project to measure patient outcomes. The implementation of this project can help parents understand the importance of their involvement in occupational therapy services both inside the clinic and at home and how it can increase patient outcomes and child development.
