Aortic dissection (AD) is a life-threatening vascular disease with a high mortality rate. Surgery is essential in the acute phase but carries significant risks, whereas elective surgery during the chronic phase yields better outcomes. However, no pharmacological therapy has been proven effective in slowing AD progression. In our recent pilot clinical study, an association between higher plasma fibrinogen levels and improved clinical outcomes was observed in AD patients, suggesting a potential protective role of fibrinogen. BACKGROUND:  Acute myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) increases risk for cognitive decline, yet the underlying mechanisms mediating heart-brain communication remain poorly understood. Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) have emerged as novel long-range signaling mediators and may play a critical role.

METHODS: MI/R was induced by transient ligation of the left anterior descending artery. In particular, the most common and lethal brain cancer, glioblastoma (GBM), derived from glial cells (astrocytes or microglia), has been shown to integrate into synaptic networks and to receive paracrine signals from neighbouring tumor microenvironment (TME) cells. Dams might create a mosaic of habitat patches in which above dam habitats exhibit differences in water chemistry and physical properties compared to below dam habitats, resulting in differences in macroinvertebrate diversity between these two habitats. Phosphorus is a ubiquitous contaminant in urban and agricultural landscapes. A retention basin located in the southern part of Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, was identified as receiving stormwater runoff with elevated phosphorus concentrations. The basin is surrounded by expanding urban development, contributing to the progressive degradation of water quality in the bay, which is already highly eutrophic. The population dynamics of the Asian invasive copepod Sinodiaptomus sarsi were  studied for four years after its introduction into an artificial pond in Kyiv (Ukraine) in  2020. The growth and development parameters of this species were measured under  laboratory conditions. From its first appearance in spring 2020, the abundance  of copepodite stages and adults increased from 3.5–5.2 individuals (ind.)  m–3 to 1057.8 ind. m–3 in June 2024, suggesting the successful establishment  of S. sarsi populations in this region. Morphometric And Reproductive Divergence Of Deep-Water Shrimps Plesionika Martia (A. Milne-Edwards, 1883) And P. Heterocarpus (A. Costa, 1871) Along A Depth Gradient In The Eastern Aegean Sea, Murat Özbek, Cengi̇z Koçak, Zafer Tosunoğlu

This study provides a comparative analysis of two deep-water pandalid shrimp  species, Plesionika martia and P. heterocarpus, based on monthly samples collected  over one year in the Eastern Aegean Sea. Specimens were obtained from species-specific depth zones (550 m for P. martia and 350 m for P. heterocarpus) to examine  morphometric traits, sexual dimorphism, and reproductive patterns. A total of 4419  individuals were analyzed. Females were significantly larger and more abundant than  males (K–S test, p < 0.05), indicating pronounced sexual dimorphism. Length–weight relationships revealed negative allometric growth in both species, confirmed  by t-tests (p < 0.05). Reproductive activity differed markedly: P. martia showed a short  and distinct spawning period peaking in late autumn, whereas P. heterocarpus  displayed a prolonged, bimodal cycle with peaks in spring and summer. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) and the proportion of ovigerous females varied  significantly by season and species. A strong positive correlation between carapace  length and gonad weight was found, with a more linear relationship in P. martia and  greater variability in P. heterocarpus. Size at first maturity (L₅₀) was estimated at 22.3  mm CL for P. heterocarpus but could not be reliably determined for P. martia  due to limited small size data, likely reflecting ontogenetic depth segregation. The  consistent bathymetric separation between these species—also reported in the  Western Mediterranean—suggests ecological niche differentiation. Species-specific  management measures, including depth-based fishing restrictions and temporal  closures during reproductive peaks, are recommended to support the sustainable  exploitation of deep sea shrimp stocks in the region.

CONTEXT: Multilevel lumbar fusion use has increased with an aging U.S. population. Depression and psychotic disorders are linked to poorer surgical outcomes, but their effects in this setting are unclear.

AIMS: The aims of this study were to quantify the prevalence of these disorders and evaluate associations with perioperative outcomes and resource use.

SETTINGS AND DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study using the National Inpatient Sample from 2016 to 2022.

Using satellite-derived abundance indices over 20 years, we investigated population change among the seven Ross Sea emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) colonies. We found a 90% probability that the Ross Sea metapopulation had lower springtime attendance between 2005 and 2024 (mean change = -23%; 95% CI: -46 to +20%). We identified two distinct phases of change: slightly increasing 2005 to 2019/2020, followed by a steep decline 2020-2024, resulting in a decrease of approximately 23 000 birds in 5 years or approximately 32% of the regional population. Depression, although a consequence of sexual violence, has not been studied in the context of college students’ views of campus sexual violence climate. Depression is one of the most prevalent and impairing mental health concerns among college students and has well-established links to sexual violence victimization; therefore, it serves as a theoretically and clinically meaningful focal outcome. Therefore, we assessed perceptions of institutional climate in the context of self-reported depression. Epithelioid haemangioendothelioma (EHE) is a rare vascular sarcoma of intermediate malignancy. In 2023, a 31-year-old female presented to a tertiary care hospital in Muscat, Oman, with symptoms later diagnosed as primary vaginal EHE. The patient had primary, locally invasive vaginal EHE that subsequently metastasised to the lungs. The patient experienced progression of systemic disease despite chemotherapy and was therefore transitioned to palliative chemotherapy. The effects of urbanisation on our natural environment have led to a significant shift in ecosystem structure and processes, posing threats to many wildlife species. However other species adapts to urban settings exploiting food and nesting opportunities that humans provide. This study identified and mapped Laughing Dove Streptopelia senegalensis nests in human structures and trees within in an urban setting. The study characterised the nesting site selection, nest materials choices, and breeding success in human structures and trees.
