Just Scratching The Surface-Geographers And The Mining West, Rand E. Rohe
Just Scratching The Surface-Geographers And The Mining West, Rand E. Rohe
The Geographical Bulletin
Research for a doctoral dissertation on Western mining disclosed an enormous body of literature on the subject, a paucity of works by geographers, and an almost unlimited potential for such studies.' Most existing studies present and examine facts in their historical context with little or no attention to geographical interpretation.2 Yet, such analysis is essential to a full understanding of the significance of mining. Without geographic studies of mining, its perspective in the development of the West remains vague and its enduring significance to the present uncertain. While hundreds of works exist on the various gold and silver rushes, few …

Shared Culture In Intimate Relationships, Jackelyn Castaneda
Shared Culture In Intimate Relationships, Jackelyn Castaneda
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Almost everyone identifies with some kind of culture and the definition often varies among researchers and disciplines of the field. Culture has an influence on every aspect of one’s everyday life, including the role it plays in close relationships. Although intimate relationships and culture have been widely explored in psychological research, limited studies have explored how these two factors may go hand in hand in creating what may be a newer concept, a mini-culture (smaller, unique cultural groups that develop within larger societies or organizations). The purpose of this study was to explore how this awareness of culture sharing and …

Goldrush Migrations And Goldfield Populations In The American West 1848-1880, Rand E. Rohe
Goldrush Migrations And Goldfield Populations In The American West 1848-1880, Rand E. Rohe
The Geographical Bulletin
The discovery of placer gold initiated some of the most spectacular migrations ever to occur in the American West. The discovery of gold in California in 1848, of course, touched off the first of the western mining rushes. More importantly, its backwash led to the development of the rest of the mountain West. From California, the mining frontier moved eastward and subsequently enveloped most of the West. The background of the discovery of gold in California needs but cursory attention here. On January 24, 1848, in the course of constructing a sawmill on the American River, James Marshall noticed flecks …

Enthesis Size And Hand Preference: Asymmetry In Humans Contrasts With Symmetry In Nonhuman Primates, Lucyna A. Bowland, Lesley H. Eason, Lukas Kyle Delezene, Michael J. Plavcan
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
ObjectivesHumans display species-wide right-hand preference across tasks, but this pattern has not been observed at comparable levels in nonhuman primates, suggesting the behavior arose after the panin-hominin split. Muscle attachment sites (entheses) are used to infer soft tissue anatomy and reconstruct behaviors within skeletal populations, but whether entheseal size asymmetry can reflect hand preference remains unclear. If entheseal asymmetry is linked to hand preference, we expect to see greater asymmetry in human hands, where hand preference is more pronounced, compared to nonhuman primates. We tested for bilateral asymmetry in the size of the opponens pollicis muscle flange using a sample …

Hypericum Chishuiense (Hypericaceae, Sect. Ascyreia), A New St. John's Wort Species From Guizhou, China, Ruizhi Bai, Zheng-Lin He, Ferhat Celep, Lu Wang, Chunlei Xiang
Turkish Journal of Botany
Hypericum chishuiense (Hypericaceae), a new species from Chishui County, Guizhou Province, China, is described and illustrated. Molecular phylogenetic analyses, based on five plastid DNA markers (psbA-trnH, psbC-trnS, rbcL, trnL-trnF, and trnS-trnG), place the new species within H. sect. Ascyreia. Morphologically, the new species is closely related to H. stellatum and H. rotundifolium, but it can be distinguished by several features, including broadly ovate, ovate-elliptic to subcircular leaves (vs. oblong-lanceolate or lanceolate to narrowly ovate leaves of H. stellatum) and broadly elliptic, ovate to triangular-ovate sepals (vs. narrowly lanceolate and rare markedly leaf-like sepals H. stellatum), and it can be distinguished …

Language Processing: The Precedence Of Neural Networks On The Account Of Hidden Markov Models, Dia Eddin Abuzeina
An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)
Background: since its discovery at the beginning of the last century, Markov models gain a great popularity, and have been widely used in different domains. However, the most prominent use was in computational linguistics, or what is known as natural language processing (NLP). Abstractly, Markov models are nothing but a statistical representation of a particular system. The mathematical statistical representation of a given system is the heart of Markov theory. Markov models characterized by solid mathematical representation, which significantly promotes using it. No doubt, Markov models are mainly used in prediction and classification, to serve computational linguistics as well as …

Cannabis In The Clink: An Argument In Favor Of Medical Marijuana For Disabled Inmates, Sophia Dechurch
Journal of Law and Health
In recent decades, medical marijuana programs have become commonplace, and most states in the United States of America are ready to accept marijuana as a natural alternative to treat symptoms of certain conditions such as chronic pain, cancer, mental illness, multiple sclerosis (MS), HIV/AIDS, and substance use disorder; as such, medical marijuana is readily accessible to those who have a qualifying diagnosis – the exception being those who are incarcerated. Although disability, substance abuse, and mental illness are prevalent among those under state supervision, these individuals are effectively prohibited from enjoying the benefits of medical marijuana. This Note will provide …

Theories, Technologies, And Prospects For The Utilization Of Deep Underground Storage Space, Wei Hengfei, Fang Jie, Shi Junjie, Li Qiuyuan, Yu Beibei, Chen Jing
Coal Geology & Exploration
Background The world's energy utilization has shifted from high-carbon, high-polluting, non-renewable energy to low-carbon, clean, renewable energy. In this process, the utilization of low-carbon, clean energy typified by natural gas, wind power, solar energy, and hydrogen energy needs to be coupled with deep underground storage space (DUSS) to offset their regional constraints and instability. Additionally, low- and zero-carbon technologies like carbon dioxide (CO2) geological storage also rely on DUSS. Therefore, investigating the theories, technologies, and prospects of DUSS utilization under the low-carbon background will provide significant guidance for efficient DUSS utilization in China. Methods Based on the investigation …

Recently, Indonesia has taken a policy to merge all the research institutions, which were classified as non-ministerial institutions, into the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN –Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional). The BRIN is expected to (1) reduce the research costs for the research institutions; and (2) integrate and harmonize these institutions. On the other hand, the policy has drawn constitutional law scholars' attention. Many of them who concern that BRIN intervenes academic freedom in Indonesia. The main factor that causes the concern is the subordinate relationship between the President and the BRIN that restrain researchers from their …

Coordinated And Optimized Scheduling Of Virtual Power Plants With Wind Power‑Waste Incineration Cogeneration Considering Uncertainty Of Source And Load Sides, Chenyu Wang, Zhong Tang, Minjie Wei, Xiangyang Liu, Haoyang Cui
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
In response to the uncertainty of wind power and load fluctuations, as well as the insufficient system peak shaving capacity of cogeneration units during winter heating periods, a virtual power plant consisting of wind farms, power-to-gas (P2G) conversion plants, and waste incineration power plants within a certain area is formed. Firstly, to address the low energy utilization efficiency of waste incineration power plants, it is considered to adopt their cogeneration mode to participate in system peak shaving, improve energy utilization efficiency, and establish a mathematical model of waste incineration power plants under the cogeneration mode. Secondly, wind farms, P2G, and …
