Ethnic Disparities In Hba1c And Hypoglycemia Among Youth With Type 1 Diabetes: Beyond Access To Technology, Social Deprivation And Mean Blood Glucose, J. Pemberton, Zhide Fang, Stuart Chalew, S. Uday
School of Public Health Faculty Publications
Introduction The UK national pediatric diabetes audit reports higher HbA1c for children and young people (CYP) with type 1 diabetes (T1D) of Black ethnicity compared with White counterparts. This is presumably related to higher mean blood glucose (MBG) due to lower socioeconomic status (SES) and less access to technology. We aimed to determine if HbA1c ethnic disparity persists after accounting for the above variables. Research design and methods A retrospective analysis of participants who received structured education in continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) use was conducted at a tertiary center. HbA1c was paired with glucose metrics from 90-day CGM data. The …

Mamluk And Ottoman Remains In The Al-Wata Quarter, Safed (Zefat) (Pp. 113–137), Hervé Barbé
'Atiqot
The salvage excavation in the al-Wata quarter of Safed revealed that the development of this sector of the city began as early as the early Mamluk period. This is further reinforced by the Arabic historical sources. The pottery suggests that occupation began as early as the thirteenth century, with some vessels clearly dating to the Frankish period. The numismatic study adds credence to this conclusion. The historical data and the archaeological finds, including a seventeenth-century coin, hint that the site was also occupied in the first half of the Ottoman period; however, no building remains from this period were identified.

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
In developing countries in Africa and Asia, meeting challenges of water scarcity and pollution has often been hampered by shortcomings in higher education, including insufficient research productivity and funding, lack of opportunity for university graduates, and a mismatch between university activities and societal needs. To address these issues, we developed novel programs integrating technical instruction and preparation for professional practice in hydrology for cohorts of graduate students from Morocco and Egypt (2012–2013) and from Türkiye and Indonesia (2013–2014). Students participated in an initial online course and a follow-up workshop featuring geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and hydrologic modeling with …

Red Herring: The Overstatement Of Soviet Power In The Early Cold War (1945-1953), Ronald R. Shaw
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The early Cold War (1945-1953) was a defining period for the 20th century, setting the grand strategic approach to the post-World War II era for the United States and Soviet Union. A common method employed by both sides was to overstate the power, capability, and aggression of the Soviet Union to enable grand strategic planning objectives. While acknowledging the tangible menace of communist expansion, President Truman used the illusion of an immediate Soviet existential threat to stoke fear, reject traditional isolationism, and facilitate American international engagement to protect free and open markets in Europe. Josef Stalin made use of American …

“Dead Stars” The Revolutionary Politics Of The Edenic Past, Rosario Cruz-Lucero
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
This study undertakes a comprehensive, close reading of the original version of Paz Marquez Benitez’s (PMB’s) “Dead Stars,” published in the Philippines Herald in 1925. Previous critical essays have explicated selected aspects of the 1975 version edited and published by Leopoldo Yabes, based on some of its elements and techniques. On the other hand, this close reading is supplemented by empirical data gathered through historical research, including the cultural forms of the three Philippine traditions: indigenous, Hispanic, and colonial American. Weaving through the intertextual reading is the use of PMB’s biography, sources and influences, specifically the story’s historical context, milieu, …

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Perineal lacerations remain a common occurrence amongst vaginal deliveries. While there are some recommendations for supportive techniques throughout the literature, position is typically not included in these. Perineal trauma can have a lasting effect on the individual and increase health care costs. The purpose of this review is to identify what birthing positions are most effective at preventing perineal injury.
Methods: A formalized search of the literature was conducted via PubMed, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and SCOPUS databases. Of the 344 articles identified, 22 original studies met the inclusion and exclusion criteria for this review. A literature matrix and quality …

Breaking Barriers: Women's Struggle For The Vote In Jacksonville, Brett M. Nystrom
Breaking Barriers: Women's Struggle For The Vote In Jacksonville, Brett M. Nystrom
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
During the first half of the twentieth century, women in Jacksonville brought women’s suffrage to the forefront of the city’s discourse through increased engagement in the public sphere. By forming women’s organizations such as the Woman’s Club of Jacksonville, the Florida Equal Franchise League, and the Duval County League of Women Voters, White women addressed concerns regarding women’s voting rights. However, these White women’s organizations and Jacksonville’s White, male-dominated authority excluded African American women from participating in the public sphere. Therefore, African American women in Jacksonville established the City Federation of Colored Women’s Clubs, which served as a platform for …

Factors Affecting Freshwater Fish Communities In Two North Alabama Counties, Joshua Fitts
Factors Affecting Freshwater Fish Communities In Two North Alabama Counties, Joshua Fitts
Theses
This study examined how physical habitat characteristics influence freshwater fish diversity in streams of Madison and Limestone Counties, Alabama. Ten 150-meter stream reaches were sampled using backpack electrofishing and seining, with habitat variables measured at fixed transects. Principal component analysis identified four main habitat gradients representing flow and substrate, channel size, gravel dominance, and canopy–bedrock conditions. Although overall species richness and Shannon diversity were not significantly related to these gradients, species-specific correlations revealed clear ecological preferences. Regression models showed that root wads, herbaceous vegetation, and riprap modestly increased richness, emphasizing the role of structural diversity. These findings highlight the importance …

From Backlash To Brand Loyalty: How Self-Congruity And Generation Shape Consumer Intentions After A Failed Influencer Campaign, Dexter L. Purnell, Kimberly V. Legocki, Steven R. Barnes, Jessica Chapman
Atlantic Marketing Journal
This study examines consumer responses to corporate social advocacy (CSA) surrounding Bud Light’s partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. We fielded a cross-sectional survey of U.S. beer drinkers (N = 386) measuring actual and ideal self-congruity, generational cohort, and purchase intention. Using PROCESS Model 4 with bootstrap confidence intervals, we tested whether self-congruity mediates the relationship between generation and purchase intention. Self-congruity strongly predicted purchase intention, and indirect effects of generation via both actual and ideal self-congruity were statistically significant. Conditional (contrast-specific) indirect effects were observed only for Gen X, indicating cohort-specific pathways from CSA to purchase intention through identity …

Zigzagging Outer Space: The Legal Complexities Of Mega-Constellations, Alex S. Li
Nebraska Law Review
The rapid rise of satellite mega-constellations is reshaping the “spacescape” of Low Earth Orbits (LEO). This Article explores the unprecedented challenges introduced by these vast networks and proposes a comprehensive governance framework to ensure their sustainable operations.
It begins by examining the transformative potential of mega-constellations and offering an overview of current deployments and upcoming projects. It then evaluates the existing legal landscape, highlighting the key treaties, international organizations, and national regulators that can influence these systems. The Article then describes how the fragmented nature of the current regulatory architecture leaves us ill-equipped to address the critical challenges, such as …

Death Of A Doctrine: The End Of Classical Deterrence In A Complex Multipolar World, Daniel H. Wang
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Today's deterrence is dramatically different from that during the Cold War. This thesis examines how changes in global geopolitics altered deterrent frameworks and how those changes threaten strategic stability. Traditional nuclear deterrence is built on clear adversaries, established escalation protocols, and predictable outcomes that are increasingly obsolete when facing modern realities. Adversaries employ hybrid strategies below the traditional thresholds of nuclear deterrence while integrating nuclear capabilities into these hybrid tactics, driving a distinct disadvantage for traditional deterrence frameworks. Russia uses nuclear signaling with gray zone operations, China combines multidomain operations with nuclear deterrence to employ a full spectrum of capabilities, …

Intra-African Trade And Economic Growth In Africa: The Role Of Foreign Direct Investment, Anthony Kyereboah-Coleman, Joshua Yindenaba Abor, Daniel Ofori-Sasu
Journal of African Trade
This study examines the role of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the relationship between intra-African trade and economic growth. Employing a sample of 54 African countries over the period 2004-2022 and a two-step System Generalized Methods of Moments, the study finds that FDI inflows have a positive effect on intra-African trade, which in turn positively affects economic growth; however, FDI has a negative independent effect on growth. The study further provides evidence to support the hypothesis that FDI magnifies the positive effect of intra-African trade on economic growth, by establishing that intra-African trade and FDI are complements in enhancing economic …

A Unified Rheological Parameter For Concrete: Application Of The Shear Work Index In Flowability Optimization, Wang Yao, Jihong Gao, Kunmiao Xu, Baolin Guo, Yongzhi Guo, Qinfei Li
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Adequate flowability is crucial to ensure proper homogeneity, mechanical properties, and durability of hardened concrete. A new parameter called the Shear Work Index (SWI), which combines yield stress and plastic viscosity, was recently proposed by the authors to evaluate concrete flowability. Factors that can influence SWI are analysed in this paper. Application methods of SWI are demonstrated through case studies involving the evaluation of rheology-modifying materials, the selection of the optimal manufactured sand replacement ratio in mixed sand, and the determination of concrete vibration time. The findings highlight the effectiveness of SWI as a comprehensive parameter for optimising concrete mix …

Objective. BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) perinatal patients often face systemic, cultural, and logistical barriers to accessing mental health care during pregnancy and postpartum. These challenges contribute to disparities in outcomes, yet patient perspectives remain underrepresented in community health settings. This quality improvement initiative aimed to identify key barriers, raise awareness about perinatal mental health, and improve access to care at a community health clinic in Shoreline, Washington. A culturally inclusive educational handout was developed to support awareness and connect patients with mental health resources.
Methods. A mixed-methods approach was used to explore barriers both quantitatively and qualitatively. …
The Interplay Of Gender And Humor In The Workplace, Charlene Marie Baghdadi
The Interplay Of Gender And Humor In The Workplace, Charlene Marie Baghdadi
CMC Senior Theses
Humor is a key element in workplace dynamics, influencing leadership, team cohesion, and career advancement. However, its impact is not equal among genders. This paper explores the interplay between humor and gender in professional settings, examining how different types of humor – positive (affiliative, self-enhancing, coping sense of humor) and negative (aggressive, self-defeating) – are perceived and used by men and women. Specifically, it investigates how gender and team composition moderate the relationship between types of humor and workplace outcomes, with gender stereotypes acting as a mediator. This analysis highlights that men often benefit from a broader acceptance of humor …
