Challenging Race-Based Stereotypes About Gay And Bisexual Men’S Sexual Behavior And Perceived Penis Size And Size Satisfaction, Christian Grov, Lena D. Saleh, Jonathan M. Lassiter, Jeffrey T. Parsons

Publications and Research

Racial prejudice and stereotyping in gay and bisexual communities may be important contextual factors that contribute to racial disparities in HIV. In an effort to challenge race-based stereotypes regarding gay and bisexual men’s sexuality, we sought to determine the extent to which race and ethnicity were associated with (1) racial homophily (i.e., same-race partnerships), (2) sexual behavior (e.g., number of partners, condomless anal sex (CAS), sexual position (top/versatile/bottom)), and (3) perceived penis size and size satisfaction. Data were taken from a survey of 1,009 gay and bisexual men recruited using a street-intercept method at gay, lesbian, and bisexual community events …

Mimosa 2014/2015, Jacksonville State University Jan 2015

Mimosa 2014/2015, Jacksonville State University

JSU Yearbooks

The JSU Yearbook Collection spans the years from 1926 to the present. The publication began in 1926 as the Teacola (some volumes spelled "Teacoala") and continued under this title through 1933. The yearbook appears to have ceased printing after that year; the student newspaper took the name Teacola (later changed to the Collegian and finally the Chanticleer) and began publication in 1934. The yearbook started up again in 1947 under the name Mimosa. The Library holds all volume years that were printed: 1926-1933, 1947-1950, 1952-present.

A Study On Visible Minority Immigrant Women's Experiences With Domestic Violence, Masiya Ahmadzai Jan 2015

A Study On Visible Minority Immigrant Women's Experiences With Domestic Violence, Masiya Ahmadzai

Social Justice and Community Engagement

The purpose of this exploratory and qualitative research was to better understand the personal experiences of visible minority immigrant women seeking help with domestic violence in Southern Ontario, Canada. Over the course of two months, I interviewed two survivors of domestic violence and three professionals about their personal and professional experiences on the issue of domestic violence impacting visible minority immigrant women. A gender-based analysis of the participants’ narratives revealed that a number of diversity-related axis such as, gender, visible minority, immigrant status and economic status influenced women’s experiences with abuse. The results exemplify the various barriers they experience and …

Make Them Hear You: Participatory Defense And The Struggle For Criminal Justice Reform, Janet Moore, Marla Sandys, Raj Jayadev

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

This Article introduces participatory defense as a powerful new model for improving public defense and challenging mass incarceration. This grassroots movement empowers the key stakeholders — people who face criminal charges, their families, and their communities — to become change agents who force greater transparency, accountability, and fairness from criminal justice systems. After introducing the model’s core principles and goals, the Article offers innovative analyses from doctrinal, theoretical and empirical perspectives. First, the Article connects participatory defense with the crisis-ridden history of the constitutional right to counsel, including that doctrine’s roots in the Due Process right to be heard. Second, …

Gender And Social Capital: Implications For Women's Civic Engagement In Ecuador And Peru, Pamela Medina Jan 2015

Gender And Social Capital: Implications For Women's Civic Engagement In Ecuador And Peru, Pamela Medina

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Civic engagement is a fundamental component of a healthy democracy, contributing to higher government accountability and overall improvement in "good governance". Civic engagement is particularly critical to subgroups which are under-represented in formal political structures, such as women, as it affords these groups the opportunity to voice their unique concerns. However, women participate less in many important forms of civic engagement. The United Nations and other international organizations have emphasized the importance of increasing women's voice and empowerment in an attempt to improve women's overall well-being, particularly in the developing world. Individual and contextual factors have demonstrated contributions toward influencing …

Statistical Errors In Aviation Psychology: Commonsense Statistics In Aviation Safety Research, Christopher D. Wickens Jan 2015

Statistical Errors In Aviation Psychology: Commonsense Statistics In Aviation Safety Research, Christopher D. Wickens

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2015

I discuss problems with the use of null hypothesis significance testing, as it is particularly applied to safety research such as that in aviation psychology. Such problems are manifest in the inherent bias of traditional statistics to avoid type 1 statistical errors, and hence to discourage findings of safety improving effects as significant, when low powered experimental designs are required by necessary constraints. In contrast, I offer several approaches or remedies. Researchers should think about the decisions made by consumers of their research, based on the costs and values of those decisions; they should form alternative hypotheses, use smart planned …

Challenging The Political Assumption That “Guns Don’T Kill People, Crazy People Kill People!”, Heath J. Hodges, Mario Scalora Jan 2015

Challenging The Political Assumption That “Guns Don’T Kill People, Crazy People Kill People!”, Heath J. Hodges, Mario Scalora

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Every time an infamous mass shooting takes place, a storm of rhetoric sweeps across this country with the fury of a wild fire. “Why are we letting these people carry guns?” “Why were they not hospitalized?” “The government needs to crack down on this issue!” What is the government’s response to these cries of concern? Politicians and the media attempt to ease public fears by drawing tenuous connections among a handful of poorly understood tragedies. The salient commonality is that these high-profile shooters had some history of mental illness. A cursory review of the Internet will paint a troubling picture …

The Immortal Accusation, Lindsey Webb Jan 2015

The Immortal Accusation, Lindsey Webb

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

In the American criminal justice system, accusations have eternal life. Prosecutors, judges, and prison officials regularly consider dismissed charges and even prior acquittals in the defendant’s criminal history when making decisions ranging from the filing of charges to the imposition of punishment. This Article argues that the criminal justice system’s reliance on “accusation evidence” should be understood as furthering its larger allegiance to attaining and preserving findings of guilt.

Once the government obtains a guilty plea or verdict, appellate courts rarely overturn convictions based on concerns about the accuracy of the conviction; indeed, post-conviction review procedures often are structured to …
