It Was Tv: Teaching Hbo's The Wire As A Television Series, Todd Sodano
Media and Communication Faculty/Staff Publications
Unlike most courses dedicated to The Wire that have examined race, class, criminal justice, urban studies, or education, Sodano foregrounds The Wire as a work of television and examines how it was taught to media majors and non-majors from aesthetic, cultural, technological, economic, and sociological perspectives. It is crucial to recognize The Wire as a piece of television because the circumstances surrounding its appearance on HBO provide context for how it was produced, distributed, and received.

Listen. I Have Something To Say! A Critical Inquiry Into The Educational And Socio-Cultural Context Of African-American Male Student Achievement In An Urban School Setting, Patricia P. Watson
Theses and Dissertations
There is a general awareness that a substantial gap exists between the educational achievement of the White and African-American populations in our nation. Several prominent researchers have attempted to address this issue of the achievement gap. Kinjufu (1985), with his seminal work on the fourth-grade failure syndrome, Noguera (2008), Ferguson (2001), Tatum (1997), Payne (2005), and Gordon and Gordon (2006) all point to issues of race and income. Leary (2005) offers a theory of multigenerational trauma; Fordham and Ogbu (1986) present their theory of oppositional culture; while Sewell (1998), Gurian (2005), Kozol (1991), and Sax (2007) suggest that the gap …

Tedxund: An Escape Strategy For The War On Crime: Healing The Criminal, Tedx, David T. Link
1975–1999: David T. Link
People in prison are more than the crimes they commit, declares Rev. David, Link, a professor emeritus of Notre Dame Law School. Drawing on his experiences both in law and in prison ministry, he was inspired to plan an escape strategy for the so-called War On Crime. Put simply: Heal don’t punish.

New York’S “Close To Home” Initiative – Did It Work?, Jeffrey A. Butts
Publications and Research
The report presents an overview of John Jay College of Criminal Justice's Research and Evaluation Center's study of the Osborne Association's Close to Home initiative, which aimed to reform the juvenile justice system by placing young offenders in community-based programs instead of distant facilities. It analyzed early outcomes, focusing on placement rates, arrest trends, system expansion, and detention impacts, highlighting successes and areas needing further research.

New York’S “Close To Home” Initiative — Lessons Learned, Jeffrey A. Butts
Publications and Research
The Close to Home initiative is a policy reform that brings young people home from far-away correctional institutions to be served by programs closer to their families. New York plans to implement a second phase of the program in March 2015, bringing back youth from “limited-secure” programs that house more serious offenders. The program appears to be effective in helping youth maintain positive connections to their families and communities, increasing Regent Exams scores of justice-involved youth, and returning youth to their neighborhood schools following placement. Although more research and analysis needs to be done on the effects of Close to …

Social Disorganization, Institutional Anomie And The Geographic Patterning Of Instrumental Crime: Progress Towards An Integrated Theory, Eric Ramsey Louderback
Social Disorganization, Institutional Anomie And The Geographic Patterning Of Instrumental Crime: Progress Towards An Integrated Theory, Eric Ramsey Louderback
Open Access Theses
In comparison to other industrialized, capitalist societies, the United States is characterized by far higher rates of economically-motivated crime, also known as instrumental crime. These acts are directly harmful to immediate victims, are more than seven times more prevalent than violent crime, and they involve billions of dollars of economic losses yearly. Drawing from previous criminological research that shows that higher levels of social disorganization and institutional anomie are associated with higher rates of crime, the present study develops an integrated theoretical approach involving neighborhood-level measures of social disorganization and state-level indicators of the strength of economic and noneconomic institutions …

"In the past year, the nation’s attention has been repeatedly drawn back and forth from Ferguson to New York City as events in the two cities have had an eerie and disturbing resonance with one another. From an officer-involved death that set off controversy in Ferguson to one in New York, from a no indictment in one city to one in the other, and, now, tragically, the ambush killing of two officers in New York has been echoed in the ambush shooting (thankfully not fatal) of two officers in Ferguson."
