One major topic of debate during the 2014 gubernatorial elections was the functioning of the Department of Children and Families (DCF) in Massachusetts. Prior to the debates and subsequently as well, the media has highlighted some challenges and issues that plague DCF, and several high-profile cases have sparked not only the attention of our state government, but the public at large as well. After consultation with legislators, we decided that our 2015 Massachusetts Family Impact Seminar would focus on this crisis.

Florida's Stand Your Ground Law: Enforcement Inconsistencies And Inherent Ambiguities, Albert E. Mccormick Jr.
Florida's Stand Your Ground Law: Enforcement Inconsistencies And Inherent Ambiguities, Albert E. Mccormick Jr.
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
Theory maintains that immediate and consistent enforcement of a new rule is required for clarification of behavioral expectations. Inconsistencies in the implementation of Florida’s Stand Your Ground (SYG) law are examined, based upon 302 decisions rendered from 2005 through 2012. It is argued that, by removing the duty to retreat, SYG has turned justified self-defense from a more objective interpretation of the law by legal actors into a more subjective one.

Examining Aggravated Assault On College Campuses: A Differential Association Approach, Edlin Veras, Jason Davis Dr
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
Despite its status as the most common violent crime committed on college campuses, very little is known about factors that cause students to participate in aggravated assault. In this paper, we offer a theoretical proposal that utilizes Edwin Sutherland’s differential association theory to better anticipate factors that may contribute to assault. In general, we propose that students that hold favorable definitions of crime and less conventional attitudes will be more inclined to participate in assault. At the same time, we postulate that students that have deviant peer associations would be more likely to commit an aggravated assault on campus as …
Psychopathy And Perception Of Vulnerability, Barbara Joyce Dinkins
Psychopathy And Perception Of Vulnerability, Barbara Joyce Dinkins
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Prior research has shown that psychopathic traits correlate with ability to make more accurate assessments of vulnerability based on nonverbal cues (Wheeler, Book, & Costello, 2009; Book, Costello, & Camilleri, 2013). The current study aims to provide further support for this finding, examine effect of criminal experience, and determine if the finding generalizes to females and non-Caucasians. An online survey was conducted, where each participant was shown several videos of people walking alone down a hallway. After each video, they were asked to rate the vulnerability of the depicted person. Higher levels of psychopathic traits (measured by the Elemental Psychopathy …

Low Desire, Trauma, And Femininity In The Dsm-5: A Case For Sequelae, Alyson K. Spurgas
Sociology and Criminal Justice Studies Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
The recently released DSM-5 (2013) includes a new sexual dysfunction: Female Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder (FSIAD). For the first time, the low sexual desire disorders are split along gender lines, and lack of sexual ‘receptivity’ is offered as a criterion for diagnosis in women only. Although ‘severe relationship distress’ or other ‘significant stressors’ are to be considered during evaluation for FSIAD, the patient’s trauma history is not evaluated as part of the protocol. The presence of violence or distress can potentially elicit a differential diagnosis, but what constitutes ‘severity’ is not articulated either, except to designate ‘partner violence’ as the primary …

Studies in molecular ecology depend on field-collected samples for genetic information, and the tissue sampled and preservation conditions strongly affect the quality of the DNA obtained. DNA yields from different tissue types have seldom been compared, and the relative performance of storage media has never been directly tested, even though these media may influence DNA degradation under field conditions. We analyzed DNA yield from buccal swabs and wing punches harvested from live bats using nucleic acid quantification as well as quantitative PCR for a single-copy nuclear locus. We also compared DNA yields from wing tissue preserved in three media: ethanol, …

The victims' story here is a heartbreaking one, and sadly, all too familiar. Too often, victims are targeted, advertised online, and transported for purposes of prostitution while subjected to poor conditions, coercion, and often physical violence. Recognizing that human trafficking is a pervasive and troubling epidemic, Congress and state legislatures around the country have taken actions to criminalize trafficking, punish its offenders, and provide necessary services for trafficking victims. In 2011, Massachusetts enacted An Act Relative to the Commercial Exploitation of People ("Massachusetts Anti-Trafficking Statute") to address the problem of trafficking in the Commonwealth. Among other key provisions, the Massachusetts …

Estimating Vertex Measures In Social Networks By Sampling Completions Of Rds Trees, Bilal Khan, Kirk Dombrowski, Ric Curtis, Travis Wendel
Publications and Research
This paper presents a new method for obtaining network properties from incomplete data sets. Problems associated with missing data represent well-known stumbling blocks in Social Network Analysis. The method of “estimating connectivity from spanning tree completions” (ECSTC) is specifically designed to address situations where only spanning tree(s) of a network are known, such as those obtained through respondent driven sampling (RDS). Using repeated random completions derived from degree information, this method forgoes the usual step of trying to obtain final edge or vertex rosters, and instead aims to estimate network-centric properties of vertices probabilistically from the spanning trees themselves. In …
A Holler To My Sisters On Welfare: Mothers In The Works Of Shakur And Hughes, Wesley Turner
A Holler To My Sisters On Welfare: Mothers In The Works Of Shakur And Hughes, Wesley Turner
BYU English Symposium
For the purposes of this paper, I will juxtapose the work of Tupac Shakur with Langston Hughes in order to reveal Shakur’s engagement with African American literary history. Both Hughes and Shakur have recurring maternal relationships in their works. However, both artists incorporate these relationships very differently. Hughes primarily discussed mothers and children in order to show how far African Americans have come in gaining equal rights in their country. His mother-child relationships are ones that hope for continued steps towards equality and a breakdown of the black/white color line. Shakur, however, discusses children and mothers in the context of …
