Are The Fcc's "New" Regulations Really An "Obamacare For The Internet"?, Donald Roth

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

"A few days ago, news services everywhere were abuzz with news about the Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC) new “Net Neutrality” regulations. While many internet sources have been advocating for this concept for a while now, recent coverage has increased not only because of decisive action by the FCC but also because of a rising tide of criticism and outcry, particularly from Republican politicians and commentators."

Mental Health Courts: The Criminal Justice Response To The Rise In Mentally Ill Prisoners, Amberle Heath Mar 2015

Mental Health Courts: The Criminal Justice Response To The Rise In Mentally Ill Prisoners, Amberle Heath

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In 2005, more than half of all prison and jail inmates had a mental health problem, and correctional institutions had replaced all other mental health facilities to become America's primary venue for the treatment of mental disorder. Further, the proportion of the correctional population that is mentally ill is increasing significantly faster than the correctional population itself. From 1998 to 2005, while the overall correctional population increased 20.8 percent, the mentally ill correctional population increased 27.3 percent. This thesis discusses the most recent literature that documents this increase, and presents reasons for it, including deinstitutionalization, the criminalization of the mentally …

Imagining The Kingdom: The Intersection Of Religion And Violence, Donald Roth Mar 2015

Imagining The Kingdom: The Intersection Of Religion And Violence, Donald Roth

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

"All religions must grapple honestly with issues of violence, both in terms of the limits and means of righteous zeal and in terms of the ultimate goals of the movement. One potentially instructive way for the monotheistic religions to do this may be to ask the question “How do we imagine the Kingdom of God?”

Posting about the intersection of religion and violence from In All Things - an online hub committed to the claim that the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ has implications for the entire world.

The Foul, Or What's Up (Wassup) On The Court?: A Study Of African-American Male Social Interactions On The Outdoor Basketball Court, Craig E. Soaries Mar 2015

The Foul, Or What's Up (Wassup) On The Court?: A Study Of African-American Male Social Interactions On The Outdoor Basketball Court, Craig E. Soaries

Student Scholarship

There is a vicious cycle of drug addiction and displacement for many undereducated, and low skilled African-American men, that leads to a life of frustration, defeat and despair. These groups of African-American males for various reasons, culturally as well as sociologically, have not participated in what is considered mainstream American society but rather have created a social order of their own. Evidences of this alternative order are demonstrated in street gangs, prison life and other socially unacceptable lifestyles. An alternative order is genuine, unrecognized and coexists with the dominant American social order. This study examines offensive, foul, behavior on a …

School Resource Officer And Patrol Officer Perceptions Of Roles And Job Satisfaction, Trisha Rhodes Mar 2015

School Resource Officer And Patrol Officer Perceptions Of Roles And Job Satisfaction, Trisha Rhodes

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Despite growing research on police in schools, there is relatively little known about how the school environment influences officers. School resource officer (SRO) programs increase the range of traditional roles and include activities that may conflict with law enforcement roles, such as mentoring, advising, and teaching. Officers who experience ambiguous or conflicting role expectations may be less satisfied with their work. Officer job satisfaction may also be influenced by individual characteristics, such as locus of control. Importantly, job satisfaction is linked with work performance, and SROs’ work affects the lives of youth, parents, and school staff. The present study examined …

Violently Possessed: Johnson As The Vehicle For Limiting Sentencing Enhancement Under The Armed Career Criminals Act, Jonathan Robe Mar 2015

Violently Possessed: Johnson As The Vehicle For Limiting Sentencing Enhancement Under The Armed Career Criminals Act, Jonathan Robe

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

This commentary previews an upcoming Supreme Court case, Johnson v. United States in which the Court will decide whether conviction for mere possession of a short-barreled shotgun qualifies as a "violent felony" that warrants sentence-enhancement under the Armed Career Criminals Act. The Author argues that he plain text of the statute and the Court's prior cases on the issue suggest tat convictions for "mere possession" do not satisfy the definition of "violent felony" and that the Court should overturn the Eighth Circuit's ruling upholding Johnson's sentence enhancement.

Defense Counsel Obligations To Screen For Mental Illness, Paul R. Gormley Mar 2015

Defense Counsel Obligations To Screen For Mental Illness, Paul R. Gormley

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

Anecdotes and peer-reviewed studies report that large percentages of the criminal justice population (arrested, defendants, detainees / inmates) are mentally ill. For many, mental illness is identified only post-trial during incarceration. Defense attorneys likely provide these clients Constitutionally defective representation. This representation wastes resources, triggers legal and personal consequences for the defendant, and impairs public safety while increasing costs in all components of the justice system. Use of screening instruments by counsel would reduce the instances of mentally ill defendants receiving ineffective representation and passing undetected through counsel's hands into corrections and ultimately back to society without treatment.

It is important for students to understand the emotional impact of the Holocaust and not limit their studies to facts and statistics. Holocaust survivors are invited into the classroom to share their experiences and interact with students. Through this workshop, students create a Story Expression Project using multiple art forms. The projects serve as a tribute to the survivors and as a way to share their stories for future generations.

Binary logistic regression and classification and regression tree (CART) analyses were conducted to predict criminal conviction in violence-related police crime arrest cases. Finding indicate that conviction of police officers on one or more offenses charged are driven by …
