Performance Analysis Of Mobile Edge Computing Deployment Models In 5g Networks, Safaa Alali, Abdulkaim Assalem
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
5G networks and Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) are two main pillars of the next technological revolution. The first pillar provides ultra-reliable, high-bandwidth connectivity with ultra-low latency, while the second pillar gives mobile networks cloud computing capabilities at the edge of the network, enabling compute-dense, context-aware services for mobile users. So the next generation of mobile networks will see close integration between computing and communication. Therefore, it was necessary to study the different deployment options for edge hosts in 5G network, to know the effect of those options on the overall performance of the network. In this research, (Omnetpp 6.0) network …

An Affirmation Of Coexistence Between Artificial Intelligence (Ai) And Human Intelligence (Hi): An Inquiry Into The Structure Of Kazuo Ishiguro’S Novel, Klara And The Sun, Shiva Hari Mainaly
Critical Humanities
A narrative reflective of the perils and promises of automation entering the subjective realm of humankind, Kazuo Ishiguro’s latest novel, Klara and the Sun, confronts us with the notion of coexistence between artificial intelligence (AF) and human intelligence (HF) by uncovering a robust structure arising from the contestation amidst a host of binaries: Human versus machine, AI versus HI, self versus the other, science versus nature, and the list goes on. Although a vast majority of analytical inquiries into this novel uncover the incoherence of human identity and consciousness in the society deeply invested in affordances of the fifth industrial …

Threatening National Security Or Bridging The Digital Divide? A Case Study Of Huawei’S Expansion In Brazil, Julie Jin Zeng
Threatening National Security Or Bridging The Digital Divide? A Case Study Of Huawei’S Expansion In Brazil, Julie Jin Zeng
Rosenberg Institute Scholars
China’s digital footprint has been expanding rapidly in Latin America in the last two decades. Neither the U.S.-China tech war nor the U.S.-led global campaign aimed at Chinese tech firms seemed to be able to reverse the trend. Much of the policy discussion in the western media surrounding China’s digital expansion focuses on the supply side, emphasizing the potential risks of adopting Chinese technologies. Yet there remains scant research on the demand side— namely, how policymakers in developing countries perceive Chinese tech firms and how they maneuver amid the intensifying rivalry between the U.S. and China. Why did Chinese tech …

In the popular imagination, sustainability is often synonymous with environmentalism, but it encapsulates much more. While environmentalism and conservation are often a focal point of sustainability efforts, so too are the people who impact the environment through their actions and associated activism. In this paper, we examine the discourse on sustainability, nature conservation and climate change. We focus, in particular, on the relationship between humans and the seas, where three main topics entangle: eco-feminism, ocean conservation and well-being. This paper highlights its implications for research on sustainability, nature conservation and climate change by outlining an aqueous logic — a fluid …

Learning Technology With Beginner-Friendly Software: Design Students' On Attitude Towards Software Alternatives, Jeffrey C. F. Ho, Ryan Ng, Hebitz H. C. Lau
IASDR Conference Series
When teachers introduce a new type of technology, they often choose a beginner-friendly software option. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether and how design students' perception towards a beginner-friendly software influences their perception, attitude, and intention to learn other more advanced software. Based on the Technology Acceptance Model, we proposed and tested correlations between students' perception towards beginner-friendly software and their perceptions of other software in the same category. To introduce computational tools for conducting big-data research, we developed a beginner-friendly software called Onion, which allows design students to use computational tools such as data retrieval …

Transforming Resilient Healthcare Systems: Mapping The Pathway Forward With Healthcare 4.0 Technologies, Valentina Marques Da Rosa, Flavio S. Fogliatto, Tarcísio A. Saurin, Guilherme L. Tortorella, Leandro M. Tonetto
IASDR Conference Series
Traditional approaches to healthcare service design usually seek resilient healthcare relying on social interactions between care providers. The current growth in the adoption of digital technologies in healthcare systems, usually grouped under the acronym H4.0 (Healthcare 4.0), calls for the integration of Resilience Engineering (RE) principles and Information and Communications digital technologies in the design of healthcare services. This paper offers an expert-based mapping of how H4.0 technologies may impact four abilities that characterize resilient healthcare systems, namely: monitor, anticipate, respond, and learn. Based on our findings, we discuss how designers and healthcare managers should jointly consider RE and H4.0 …

A Design-Driven Approach To Distributed Ledger Technologies For Small Farmers Communities: A Case Study In Portugal, Sabrina Scuri, Catarina Ribeiro, Valentina Nisi
IASDR Conference Series
Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) has the potential to transform the agri-food sector, empowering rural and underserved farming communities by enabling the creation of a more environmentally sustainable and socio-economically inclusive food system. Several PoC and pilot projects are running all over the world to test this specific use case. However, the success rate of these initiatives is still limited. A critical analysis of the state-of-the-art suggests as a possible explanation for the observed trend that the current research approach to DLT for agriculture is mostly technology-driven. This limits our ability to develop solutions that provide benefits to the communities they’re …

Digital Transition, Sustainable Product-Service System (S.Pss), And Environmental Sustainability - A Systematic Review, Hang Su, Carlo Arnaldo Vezzoli, Nan Xia
IASDR Conference Series
Recently, the ongoing digital transition has brought forth both new risks and opportunities for environmental sustainability. However, despite some attention given to potential relationships between related areas and a growing research interest therein, a limited number of studies have holistically explored the nexus between digital transition, PSS, and environmental benefits. This research is a systematic literature review focused on the relationship between S.PSS and environmental sustainability during the digital transition process. We propose a novel analytical perspective by synthesizing and mapping the existing literature to derive a potential pathway for digital technologies to optimize four S.PSS relevant factors through four …

Hypo-Cathexis And Impotence In The Facilitating Environment Of The Anthropocene: Towards Digital Humanities, Brian W. Millen
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis is an attempt to understand why there does not seem to be enough will to take proper action in light of the information we have about the destructive effects of the Anthropocene, in particular: climate change and the destruction of biodiversity. It is an attempt to follow the injunctions of French philosopher Bernard Stiegler to re-examine and re-evaluate knowledge in terms of the primary role of technics in human experience, and to preliminarily situate the digital humanities within such a project. In this paper, I investigate Sigmund Freud's concepts of cathexis, decathexis, and hyper-cathexis as psychic mechanisms whereby …
Digital Art: An Incomplete Story, Conor Mcgarrigle Dr.
Digital Art: An Incomplete Story, Conor Mcgarrigle Dr.
Books/Book Chapters
This chapter asks what it means to speak of digital art today in the context of Irish art. It argues that while digital technology infuses all aspects of daily life, including art making, that digital art is not simply art made with digital tools. Applying a historical perspective, digital art is seen as developing from a long history of art and technology that stresses tactical critical engagement. The chapter finishes with an overview of the forgotten history of Irish digital art to argue that, without this history, the story of Irish art is incomplete.

Use Of Eeg-Based Machine Learning To Predict Music-Related Brain Activity, Charles Skutt
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Music has many awe-inspiring characteristics. Some may refer to it as a “universal language” with the ability to transcend the barriers of speech, while others may describe its ability to evoke intense emotional experiences for the listener. Regardless of the description, it is a commonly held view that music can have many profound effects. Studies of music’s effects have found these beliefs to be more than pure conjecture, finding that music interacts with and changes our brains in physical and emotional ways. Music can even have clinical applications, such as music therapy. This type of therapy has been shown to …

Visual Pollution Classification Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Jacob Vogelpohl, Heba Elgazzar
2023 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
Visual pollution is an impairment on an individual's ability to enjoy their surroundings. It usually takes the form of a messy and chaotic environment that can cause overstimulation of the visual senses. This includes trash, advertisements, construction, electric cables, and similar objects. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are a form of artificial intelligence that use supervised learning to process and classify images. In this research, a CNN processed images of city streets and classified them as polluted or not polluted based on the visual characteristics that it learned from during its training period. The CNN achieved a training accuracy of 98% …

Affordable Computation For Architecture, António Leitão, Renata Castelo-Branco, Inês Caetano
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Current architectural requirements prioritize the need to minimize the ecological footprint. By taking advantage of computational design approaches like Algorithmic Design (AD), architects can enhance their design processes with analysis, optimization, and visualization mechanisms, which are critical to explore design solutions that meet this need. However, these mechanisms are also highly time- and resource-consuming, often implying a quality tradeoff or the acquisition of High-Performance Computing (HPC) machines. The latter are not yet affordable for most design studios but, fortunately, they can be contracted as a service. This paper evaluates the impact of computation as a service in architecture and, more …

Amazon Web Services, The Lacanian Unconscious, And Digital Life, Marshall N. Armintor
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In late 2011, ex-Amazon developer Steve Yegge’s rant about his former company described Amazon’s rapid transformation from an online bookstore to a web-services entity with a ruthlessly unified platform, all guided by the idea that the company’s effort to streamline its internal efficiency could be monetized, and the resultant software products sold through Amazon Web Services. The media consumerism that fed Amazon’s early years funded a surveilling behemoth, one that everyone feared Microsoft would become. As such, AWS has become a manifestation of the internet’s Lacanian unconscious (even providing the services and hosting for Reddit), structured around the optimization of …
Lacan And The Algorithm, Clint Burnham
Lacan And The Algorithm, Clint Burnham
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Exploring the development of algorithms in Lacanian theory, specifically the "R schema" in the 1950s, I argue that psychoanalysis, read through contemporary debates about the "algorithmic cult" of Netflix and other avatars of popular culture, can be said to reveal the inhuman, machinic essence of subjectivity. The etiology of algorithms, mathemes, and other formulae and diagrams in Lacan’s oeuvre has been under-studied, in part because for some readers they are not as attractive as his more bravura flourishes of word play as exegetical excess, and in part because they derive largely from the ‘hard’ structuralist moment of his work in …

The Application And Impact Of Digital Technology In Jewelry Art, Lai Tai
MA Theses
Since the invention of the first electronic computer in 1946, digital technology
has gone through three stages: the computer, the Internet, and a new-generation of information technology. The form of digitalization has different background and
environment, and the meaning explained is also different. The digitalization of
specific affairs is actually in a narrow sense, while the digitalization of enterprises and organizations is mostly in a broad sense. Digital technology has a big feature, which is that it can let you leave the physical world and come to the digital world. The digital technology revolution promotes the digital transformation of mankind. …
