(Another) Battle In The Clouds, Mél Hogan Aug 2017

(Another) Battle In The Clouds, Mél Hogan

The Goose

At age ten, in 1918, Rachel Carson entered a writing contest and won. In "Battle in the Clouds", Carson wrote about the sky as a battlefield, where a soldier’s life is momentarily spared because of an act of bravery undeniable even by his enemies. They watch in awe and admiration rather than shoot. For my reimagining of the present as womb rather than grave, I reflect on the current use of the cloud in “cloud computing” to discuss the role of the internet and its material infrastructures in shaping earthly possibilities. I imagine the pace and place of awe rather …

Artificial Intelligence And Public Trust, Shannon Vallor Jul 2017

Artificial Intelligence And Public Trust, Shannon Vallor

Philosophy

The future is here. With the exploding commercial market for high-powered, cloud-computing AI services provided by the likes of Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, the reach of artificial intelligence technologies is virtually unlimited. What does this mean for humans? How will we adapt to a world in which we increasingly find ourselves in economic, creative, and cognitive competition with machines? Will we embrace these new technologies with the same fervor as we embraced televisions and smartphones? Will we trust them? Should we trust them?

The Strand Theatre Fire Mar 2017

The Strand Theatre Fire

Nicole Casper

On March 10, 1941, at 12:38 a.m., the Brockton Fire Department responded to Fire Alarm Box 1311, which was pulled for a fire at the Strand Theatre. Fire Alarm dispatched the deputy chief, three engine companies, a ladder company and Squad A. Within six minutes, a second alarm was struck. Less than one hour after the first alarm, the roof of the Strand collapsed, and what appeared to be a routine fire turned into a disaster that killed thirteen firefighters and injured more than twenty others. The disaster marks one of the largest losses of life to firefighters from a …

Technology has shaped the personal experiences of Teaching Assistants (TAs) of French at the collegiate level in the United States (US), what they feel about the technology tools that are accessible in their work environment, and how they use these tools in their practice of teaching. Yet, there is limited research on the specific topic of the attitudes of TAs of French toward the instructional technologies that are available to them. This study sought to investigate the attitudes of a singular TA of French at a southern US university toward instructional technology (IT) by exploring the dynamics of IT use …

The Geometry Of Loss: A Novel, Elidio La Torre La Torre Jan 2017

The Geometry Of Loss: A Novel, Elidio La Torre La Torre

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In the year 2025, Orlando Aniello, nicknamed “Or,” a Puerto Rican poet with a broken life, becomes a “consciousness in virtual space.” Tricked by a couple of goons that devote most of their duties to bootleg memories for people who lead dull and meaningless lives, Orlando’s personality splits into fragments. As consequence, his actual experiences blend the host’s own recollections, which accidentally upload to Orlando’s brain. If bootleg mnemonic technologies glitch, Orlando does not know who he is anymore. Indeed, Orlando/ Gogo/ Alejandro suffers anterograde memory loss, and the narrator becomes merely a voice without a body. A geometry of …

Towards Building An Efficient And Economical Cloud System Using Mobile Infrastructure, Shahid Al Noor Jan 2017

Towards Building An Efficient And Economical Cloud System Using Mobile Infrastructure, Shahid Al Noor

All ETDs from UAB

Cloud computing has become the dominant computing paradigm in recent years. As cloud computing technologies evolved, researchers have explored the possibility of building clouds utilizing ubiquitous mobile computing devices and extend the domain of cloud services from traditional SAAS, PAAS, or IAAS models to distributed storage, computation, and sensing as a service models. Given the number of unused mobile devices in our environment and the invention of low cost and powerful IoT devices, we hypothesize that building a mobile cloud will be economically feasible and will provide cloud services at cheaper rates than existing cloud computing models. We prove our …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Imperceptible Realities: An Exhibition – And – Digitalisation: Re-Imaging The Real Beyond Notions Of The Original And The Copy In Contemporary Printmaking: An Exegesis, Sarah Robinson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This PhD practice-led research project provides a broad overview of how newer print technologies can bring about enhanced understandings of the world whilst simultaneously questioning the value of such processes in contrast to traditional means of image making. My curiosity pivots on the worry that something essential about representation of the real might be lost if humanity were to embrace digital methods only. Through my creative project I address my concerns to re-image representations of the real beyond notions of the original and the copy through contemporary printmaking. The research culminated in the exhibition Imperceptible Realities and an exegesis.
