Heuristics For Selecting And Using Behavioural Design Methods, Nynke Tromp, Reint Jan Renes, Jaap Daalhuizen Jun 2018

Heuristics For Selecting And Using Behavioural Design Methods, Nynke Tromp, Reint Jan Renes, Jaap Daalhuizen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design for behaviour change is a young and developing practice grounded in the belief that using insights from the behavioural sciences leads to more effective interventions for behaviour change. Although a wide range of tools, techniques and methods exist to support this, few are well introduced in terms of their underlying values or paradigm for understanding behaviour. As a result, designers are often limitedly aware of why and how methods fit their personal beliefs and way of working. This not only obstructs professional development; it decreases the effectiveness and efficiency of behavioural design. In this paper we present an initial …

Design For Profit Or Prosper, Else Skjold, Frederik Larsen Jun 2018

Design For Profit Or Prosper, Else Skjold, Frederik Larsen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Over the past decade, it has become increasingly popular to position design as an excellent tool for companies and organisations to foster innovation and growth. As an adaptable practice design can be applied to serve many ends, and in the field of sustainable transition design has the potential to create new solutions due to its capacity to ‘reframe’ large-scale problems of a ‘wicked’ nature. However, as we will argue in this paper, the innovation and change promoted through design risks becoming merely a vehicle for promoting the values associated with 20th century neoliberal capitalism. We therefore want to question the …

The Emerging Transition Design Approach, Terry Irwin Jun 2018

The Emerging Transition Design Approach, Terry Irwin

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper outlines an emerging Transition Design approach for addressing “wicked” problems (such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, crime, poverty, pollution, etc.) and catalysing societal transitions toward more sustainable and desirable futures. Wicked problems are “systems problems” that exist within large, socio-technical systems and therefore require new problem-solving approaches. The Transition Design Framework brings together an evolving body of practices that can be used to: 1. visualize and “map” complex problems and their interconnections and interdependencies; 2. situate them within large, spatio-temporal contexts; 3. identify and bridge stakeholder conflicts and leverage alignments; 4. facilitate stakeholders in the co-creation of …

Designers By Any Other Name: Exploring The Sociomaterial Practices Of Vernacular Garment Menders, Marium Durrani Jun 2018

Designers By Any Other Name: Exploring The Sociomaterial Practices Of Vernacular Garment Menders, Marium Durrani

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Studies around the cultures of design indicate a mutually constitutive relationship designers share with materials when in practice. However, professional designers are not the only ones experiencing proximate relations with materials. With the recent emergence of community-based repair workshops, non-professional designer practices of fixing things like garments reveal sites of active material tinkering possibly aiding transitions in current clothing disposal patterns. Using qualitative research methods and a sociomaterial theoretical lens, this paper takes the mending activities of non-professional menders in communal repair workshops in the city of Helsinki, Finland, as its point of departure. The study identifies these menders as …

The Design And Social Enterprise Ecosystem: How Can Design Be Applied To A Developing Social Enterprise Ecosystem?, Kwon Hyejin, Choi Youngok, Lam Busayawan Jun 2018

The Design And Social Enterprise Ecosystem: How Can Design Be Applied To A Developing Social Enterprise Ecosystem?, Kwon Hyejin, Choi Youngok, Lam Busayawan

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The United Kingdom’s social enterprise sector has grown radically over the past two decades, as a result of various government-led efforts to create an environment which enables social enterprise development. However, financial weaknesses still impede the sustainability and growth of most social enterprises. Typically, businesses recognise design as an important factor in the growth of their potential competitiveness which is crucial to making profits, and as a tool enabling stakeholders and organisations to work better as a system. Design is thus regarded as potentially playing a significant role in overcoming the financial weaknesses of social enterprises, in order to encourage …

Towards A Circular Economy: Exploring Factors To Repair Broken Electrical And Electronics Products By Users With Pro-Environmental Inclination, Marie Lefebvre, Vicky Lofthouse, Garrath Wilson Jun 2018

Towards A Circular Economy: Exploring Factors To Repair Broken Electrical And Electronics Products By Users With Pro-Environmental Inclination, Marie Lefebvre, Vicky Lofthouse, Garrath Wilson

DRS Biennial Conference Series

User repair can prolong product lifespan and support, in turn, the transformative Circular Economy agenda. Current research concerning user motivations and propensity to repair differs as to the extent at which users’ environmental concerns influence repair propensity. Because of this, the focus of this study is on potential individuals with pro-environmental inclination, as a mean to identify the factors supporting and hindering repair. To this end, an in-depth survey exploring factors influencing repair propensity for electrical and electronic goods was executed. Findings from 208 respondents affiliated with pro-environmental communities identify innovativeness and frugality traits as significant factors influencing repair propensity. …

The Beauty Of Making Hot Chocolate - An Enquiry On Designing For Everyday Rituals, Pierre Lévy Jun 2018

The Beauty Of Making Hot Chocolate - An Enquiry On Designing For Everyday Rituals, Pierre Lévy

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The everyday is often mentioned in design, yet hardly inquired. The everyday is about what is banal, infraordinary, not memorable, as well as about the force that makes things habitual, endotic. In the research encompassing this paper, we question the everyday and explore opportunities to enchant it by design. This paper focuses more specifically on the design of everyday rituals, and aims to propose a descriptive framework to ‘read’ and compose such rituals. The elaboration of the framework is done based on a case study: the making of a hot chocolate in the morning. Through an autoethnographical approach, the main …

Design For Multi-Dimensional Stages Of Lymphoedema Self-Management, Teksin Kopanoglu Jun 2018

Design For Multi-Dimensional Stages Of Lymphoedema Self-Management, Teksin Kopanoglu

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This study investigates the experience of people with the chronic medical condition lymphoedema, to inform the design of new products. Articles from literature that describe lived lymphoedema experiences are thematically synthesised from a behavioural lens. People with lymphoedema go through stages toward achieving levels of expertise, motivation and routine, to maintain effective self-management in the long-term. A preliminary framework is proposed that presents four themes (competence, autonomy, daily routine and socio-psychological) and their stages. The purpose of the framework is to assist designers in understanding how people with lymphoedema experience self-management. Focusing on facilitating a transition through these multi-dimensional stages …

Have I Got A Proposition For You: Developing The Capability For Compelling Arguments Through Rhetorical Practice Inthe Design Studio, Veronika Kelly, Myra Thiessen Jun 2018

Have I Got A Proposition For You: Developing The Capability For Compelling Arguments Through Rhetorical Practice Inthe Design Studio, Veronika Kelly, Myra Thiessen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Designers draw implicitly on rhetorical modes of appeal (ethos, pathos, logos) in the way they talk about their work in terms of its strategic, social, and cultural impact. Rhetorical practice on its own, however, may not align with an ethical position. Yet design’s increasing emphasis on values, behaviours, and social action indicates a practice that requires expertise in formulating compelling design propositions that inspire people to act. This has significance for design education in relation to developing learners’ capabilities in making more compelling arguments for their design work that emphasise the social and ethical impact of design in use. This …

Pioneering Alternative Forms Of Collaboration, Rebecca J. Hogue, Jeffrey M. Keefer, Maha Bali, Keith Hamon, Apostolos Koutropoulos, Ron Leunissen, Lenandlar Singh Jun 2018

Pioneering Alternative Forms Of Collaboration, Rebecca J. Hogue, Jeffrey M. Keefer, Maha Bali, Keith Hamon, Apostolos Koutropoulos, Ron Leunissen, Lenandlar Singh

Current Issues in Emerging eLearning

One key experience of human work, life, and play is people working together on a common goal. Yet this aspect of working together does not have one primary recognizable instantiation of what it means to work together. Words like collaboration and cooperation are often used to describe such instances, but even words like ‘collaboration’ don’t always have a neat formula for working through a collaboration. In this article we examine and reflect on our own collaborative experiences as a research group. We do this through an examination of past experiences, and through a method of writing that developed in our …

The Educational Emphases Of Science Teachers In Us Evangelical Protestant High Schools, Albert Cheng Jun 2018

The Educational Emphases Of Science Teachers In Us Evangelical Protestant High Schools, Albert Cheng

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

I examine the educational emphases of science teachers in Evangelical Protestant (EP) schools, including (1) teaching basic content knowledge, (2) improving scientific reasoning skills, and (3) presenting real-world applications of science. Using a nationally representative sample of US ninth-graders, I find differences in these educational emphases between science teachers in EP schools and science teachers in secular private, Catholic, and public schools. I also find suggestive evidence that differences in STEM-related student outcomes across school sectors, which have been demonstrated in prior research, are associated with cross-sector differences in the emphases of science teachers.

Pedagogical Design Research For University Police Uniforms, Brooke Brandewie, Injoo Kim, Myoung-Ok Kim, Robin Engel, Kevin Karpiak Jun 2018

Pedagogical Design Research For University Police Uniforms, Brooke Brandewie, Injoo Kim, Myoung-Ok Kim, Robin Engel, Kevin Karpiak

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper explores issues and opportunities for new university police officer uniform designs by utilizing a User-Centered Design Methods course as a qualitative pedagogical research approach. As a way of introducing problem-based learning, we brought the uniform redesign project to the junior level class in the School of Design. Since the design brief focused on university police, we viewed this as critical since students are key stakeholders of the uniforms. From the students’ interviews with the officers, key themes were identified about the current uniform items (i.e. hats, shirts, vests, pants, hats, and accessories) among other uniform topics. Findings indicated …

Reframing Design Problems Within Women’S Health, Sarah Homewood Jun 2018

Reframing Design Problems Within Women’S Health, Sarah Homewood

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper begins by offering a feminist reading of the visible increase in design research within the category of “women’s health”. A critical feminist reading of menstrual cycle tracking technologies is then used to investigate how the way that we frame design problems influences the artifacts produced and their impact within society. I argue that by re-framing design problems from the perspective of third and fourth wave feminism we can develop women’s health technologies that are more affirmative, inclusive and which celebrate difference and reflect the complexity around what it means to be a woman in today’s society. I illustrate …

Critique And Post-Critique In Social Innovation Projects: Between Speculation And Realism, Sissel Olander Jun 2018

Critique And Post-Critique In Social Innovation Projects: Between Speculation And Realism, Sissel Olander

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper discusses notions of critique, post-critique, speculation and realism, as it reflects through a practice-based design research project, which worked as part of a bigger Danish public innovation program with the involvement of citizens in the design of a new library and cultural house under construction. Specifically, the paper sets out to challenge what seems to be a dichotomous “either-or” thinking in the descriptions and analyses of practice-based design research projects. Accounts of design research that operates in overlapping landscapes of academia, public sector and business are often depicted as too solution-orientated and therefore not reflexive, too engaged and …

Longitudinal Change In High-Cost Prosocial Behaviors Of Defending And Including During The Transition To Adulthood, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Madison K. Memmott-Elison, Matthew G. Nielson Jun 2018

Longitudinal Change In High-Cost Prosocial Behaviors Of Defending And Including During The Transition To Adulthood, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Madison K. Memmott-Elison, Matthew G. Nielson

Faculty Publications

Despite high profile examples that are highlighted in the popular media, we know little about high-cost prosocial behaviors such as defending and including, and how these behaviors might change over time and vary by individual. Thus, this study explored defending and including behaviors across the transition to adulthood by assessing growth and profiles of these high-cost prosocial behaviors over a four-year time span. In addition the study explored gender, emotional (sympathy), cognitive (personal values), individual (self-esteem), and relational (maternal warmth) factors during adolescence that predicted profiles of defending and including during the transition to adulthood. Participants were 469 individuals (52% …

The Social Provision Of Healthcare To Migrants In The Us And In China, Van C. Tran, Katharine M. Donato Jun 2018

The Social Provision Of Healthcare To Migrants In The Us And In China, Van C. Tran, Katharine M. Donato

Publications and Research

This article develops a comparative analysis of healthcare provision to migrants in the US and in China. It proceeds in three parts. First, we begin by describing the growth of the unauthorized population and trace the evolution of social provision of healthcare to immigrants, highlighting the restrictive nature of federal social provisions and greater autonomy of state and local governments in redefining eligibility criteria in the US. Second, we examine the impact of legal status on healthcare access and utilization among Mexicans, using original data from the 2007 Hispanic Healthcare Survey and the Mexican Migration Project. We find that unauthorized …

Transdisciplinary Doctorates In The Making Disciplines, Anne Solberg Jun 2018

Transdisciplinary Doctorates In The Making Disciplines, Anne Solberg

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This article is a discussion on interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity in doctoral works in the making disciplines, which include art, design, architecture and affiliated areas. The article includes examples from nine doctoral theses in the making disciplines that are the objects of investigation in the doctoral thesis of the author. This article holds that while interdisciplinary approaches contribute to sharing knowledge and have the potential to communicate research outputs to a broader audience, transdisciplinarity has an even wider scope of knowledge sharing. Hence, inter- and transdisciplinarity are catalysts, by the crossing of discipline borders, that allow knowledge and understanding to be …

Orienteering Design Through Data: The Data-Driven Design Model, Juan Carlo Quiñones Gómez Jun 2018

Orienteering Design Through Data: The Data-Driven Design Model, Juan Carlo Quiñones Gómez

Until recently, the processes and methods used by designers have been rather traditional. As times have changed, so too have the tools used by designers to bring their inspirations into reality and develop their concepts. Now, the majority of results of the design process can be attributed to intelligent products or services. We are rapidly advancing towards an era of Industry 4.0, which is radically transforming the creative process. Data can now be part of the creative process in new and innovative ways. Many businesses in a wide range of fields are already using data to provide personalised experiences to …

Natural Materials – Nature Of Materials, Damla Tonuk, Tom Fisher Jun 2018

Natural Materials – Nature Of Materials, Damla Tonuk, Tom Fisher

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The material world is recently and very rapidly changing; altering the relationships between materials – the substance of everyday life – and designers – the professionals who are responsible for transforming materials into daily life objects. This vibrant context prompts us to explore and attempt to conceptualise these fluid relationships and review conceptual tools that will help to open up the scope of materials-based research in design. To address the multiple and multi-faceted relationships designers are situated in, we borrow concepts from social sciences that explore materiality within its multiple environments. We draw on conceptualisations of materials as active and …

Design For Self-Inclusion: Supporting Emotional Capability, Stella Boess Jun 2018

Design For Self-Inclusion: Supporting Emotional Capability, Stella Boess

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper contributes to inclusive design. It seeks to extend the current definition of Inclusive Design, addressing motion, sensory and cognitive capability, by introducing emotional capability for self-inclusion as an additional component. To illustrate this perspective, the paper presents two constructive design research cases of designing for self-inclusion. One of these cases presents a finished design to support autistic children in self-inclusion. The other case presents a design exploration method to support participants in determining the emotional priorities which should underlie design interventions. The participants in this case sought to compensate a physical disability, one, a permanent one, and the …

Investigating Perceptions Related To Technology Acceptance & Stigma Of Wearable Robotic Assistive Devices By Older Adults - Preliminary Findings, Linda Shore, Adam De Eyto, Leonard O'Sullivan

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Longevity, and good Quality of Life enhances a positive ageing experience by post- retirement adults. However, physical decline and limitations may affect independence and autonomy to conduct and engage in day to day tasks and social activities. Assistive robots can offer support to assist, and become embodied features that are accepted and worn by older adults. To date, research is limited and little is known about older adults’ opinions of assistance by robots in personal and home life. There are a number of Technology Acceptance Models (TAMs) presenting quantitative based questionnaires that attempt to gauge acceptance and usefulness of robots …

Responding To Diversity Including Disability, René Sørensen Overby, Camilla Ryhl Jun 2018

Responding To Diversity Including Disability, René Sørensen Overby, Camilla Ryhl

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper constructs a framework for understanding how notions of disability influence the discourse on accessibility and Universal Design as well as the present understanding of the user role in Denmark. Implications are that the understanding of disability and design of architecture are not mutually opposed to one another. Instead they are closely interwoven in the fabric of designing for diversity. Through the perspectives of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Disabled People's Organisations Denmark and the practicing Architects, the paper discusses three notions of disability. Initial findings of the PhD research project “Generating Inclusive Built …

Designing Machines With Autonomy: From Independence To Interdependence To Solidarity, Yuxi Liu, Larissa Pschetz Jun 2018

Designing Machines With Autonomy: From Independence To Interdependence To Solidarity, Yuxi Liu, Larissa Pschetz

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Current notions of design are strongly influenced by user- and human-centred approaches. However, with technologies that present increasing computing power and context-awareness, and algorithms that ‘design themselves’, designers are beginning to face issues that go beyond the needs of users. In this paper, we argue that the focus on humans not only neglects the increasing potential of machines, but also other forms of life, limiting design’s possibilities. We attempt to investigate the design of machines with autonomy, beyond human-centred and anthropocentric views, and present an alternative approach, in which machines do not serve or command humans, but exist and evolve …
