Sustainable Surface-Subsurface Water Use In Ergene River Basin Turkey, Mohsen Mahmoody Vanolya, Ahmet Dogan Prof. Dr, Güleda Engin Prof. Dr. Jun 2018

Sustainable Surface-Subsurface Water Use In Ergene River Basin Turkey, Mohsen Mahmoody Vanolya, Ahmet Dogan Prof. Dr, Güleda Engin Prof. Dr.

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

A methodology known as Multi-Objective Water Cycle Algorithm (MOWCA) was developed for sustainable use of water at the river basin scale. This novel metaheuristic technique is similar to a Genetic Algorithm that uses natural hydrologic cycle components i.e., rainfall, evaporation, flow routing, as elements of evolutionary optimization tools. This methodology has been applied to the Ergene River Basin that has an area of 11 020 km2 in northwestern Europe and part of Turkey near the Istanbul metropolitan area. In this basin, groundwater has been exploited densely by seven organized industrial zone centers since 1995. Their waste water is discharged into …

Exploratory Participatory Modeling With Fcm To Overcome Uncertainty: Improving Safety Culture In Oil And Gas Operations, Ahmed Alibage, Antonie J. Jetter, Payam Aminpour, Steven A. Gray, Steven Scyphers

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This work combines qualitative text analysis, participatory modeling with Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCM) with Exploratory Modelling and Analysis (EMA). FCM is suitable for modeling in data-poor environments when the system under study is not well described in quantitative terms. A case in point is safety culture, which describes the values, routines, and work processes that allow an organization to prevent disasters by avoiding and quickly bouncing back from mistakes. The concept is particularly relevant in oil and gas industry, where initially small errors have potentially devastating environmental, social, and economic impacts. In this setting relevant quantitative data on safety culture …

Citizen-Activist As Journalist: Network Journalism And Professional Practices In The Coverage Of The Aleppo Offensive, Jenny Hauser

Irish Communication Review

The global news flow of the Syrian conflict has been characterised by citizen journalism since its outset. In the absence of professional journalists on the ground, collaborative newsgathering with citizen activists has posed challenges for newsrooms seeking to align this practice with professional norms and values in journalism. This research investigates the sourcing of news content from the Aleppo offensive in November 2016. Quantitative content analysis and textual analysis of news texts by BBC World Service, France 24 English and Al Jazeera English examines how professional sourcing routines were adapted to a news context dominated by citizen activists and how …

Ttip And Ceta In Irish Newspapers: Expertise And Plurality Of Editorial Bias, Barry Finnegan Jun 2018

Ttip And Ceta In Irish Newspapers: Expertise And Plurality Of Editorial Bias, Barry Finnegan

Irish Communication Review

This paper analyses Irish newspaper coverage of two international free-trade and investment-protection agreements, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (herein, TTIP) between the EU and the USA whose negotiations are currently in suspension, and the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (herein, CETA) currently provisionally applied in law between the EU and Canada. The paper demonstrates that they constitute two good examples of substantive matters of public importance with which to analyse the editorial balance of Irish newspapers. Using agenda-setting and framing theory, the research sets out the importance of the role of media in democratic life, and contextualises newspapers’ editorial …

Media Literacy And Disciplinarity: A Case Study, Clare Scully Jun 2018

Media Literacy And Disciplinarity: A Case Study, Clare Scully

Irish Communication Review

Recent years have seen a number of changes and developments in Ireland’s third-level education sector. Increasing concerns about student literacy issues have been accompanied by an apparent institutional logic in which generic ‘one size fits all’ modules are privileged on the basis of their expediency in the context of an underfunded, neoliberal educational landscape. While these modules may offer efficiencies at an administrative, teaching and practical level, there is little research that investigates their impacts and effectiveness on students in terms of disciplinary identity and knowledge, grades or quality assurance. As a contribution towards this topic, this exploratory paper discusses …

A Case Study Exploration Of Internships In Undergraduate Business Education, Kawana W. Johnson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A single case study was used to examine internships at an (AACSB) accredited business school located at a Research 1 university in the southeastern United States. Internships are the dominant form of experiential learning used within the college under study and the “preferred method of business schools worldwide to give students practical experience and help them transition to the real world” (Kosnik, Tingle, Blanton, 2013, p. 616). The Grant University College of Business, pseudonym selected for this case, supports an internship and career services office that oversees nine internship courses representing six departments within the college. At minimum, each department …

Measuring Parent Engagement, Sheldon Rothman, Clare Ozolins, Jo Doyle Jun 2018

Measuring Parent Engagement, Sheldon Rothman, Clare Ozolins, Jo Doyle

Early Childhood Education

The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), working with the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth (ARACY), undertook the task of creating a set of measures of parents’ engagement in their children’s learning. The aim was to develop a tool that individual schools could use to measure their efforts in parent engagement and monitor those efforts. A second aim was to use the data from the tool to examine the conceptual model of parent engagement previously published by ARACY and whether it fit with the data collected through the tool. The intended result was an evidence-informed definition of parent …

Predicting Family Forest Owner Decision-Making, Jonathan Holt Jun 2018

Predicting Family Forest Owner Decision-Making, Jonathan Holt

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Family forest owners (FFO’s) play an important role in the complex interactions between development decisions and ecosystems. Determining the conditions of FFO engagement with natural systems will facilitate projections of future decision-making and subsequent ecosystem responses. We establish agent functional types (AFT’s) of landowners as a form of dimension reduction, effectively assigning individual FFO’s to a particular decision-making class, each with unique behavior rules. The objectives of this study are to (1) characterize AFT’s of New England FFO’s and (2) model AFT membership as a function of demographic and geographic data. Accomplishing (1) will establish differences in social, economic, and …

Agricultural Model Exchange Initiative (Amei), Andreas Enders, Pierre Martre, Helene Raynal, Ioannis Athanasiadis, Marcello Donatelli, Davide Fumagalli, Dean Holzworth, Claudio Stöckle, Gerrit Hoogenboom

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Model development of managed environmental systems and in particular agricultural systems is complex and driven by both biophysical and socio-economic processes. Additional complexity is created reflecting context- and scale-dependency of the main drivers. It has to offer to the scientist the possibility to create highly diverse models (modelling solutions) combining model components from different domain seamlessly. The AgMIP initiative could show it is not sufficient to run one model to estimate changes in agricultural systems.

The AMEI aims to rise to different challenges exchanging model components by

- defining standards to describe model component exchange format specifically

- developing a …

When Brother Becomes Other: Communitas And Conflict Along The Camino De Santiago, Megan E. Havard Jun 2018

When Brother Becomes Other: Communitas And Conflict Along The Camino De Santiago, Megan E. Havard

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

It is widely believed, both by scholars and practitioners of pilgrimage, that during the rite most if not all pilgrims experience communitas - a sense of community, of mutual understanding and acceptance of their fellow ritual initiates that is unfettered by traditional social structures or markers of difference. Nevertheless, evidence indicates that conflict also regularly arises among pilgrims, even as they navigate the same liminoid space in pursuit of a common goal. Pilgrims may experience conflict with one another due to differences in personality, divergent cultural backgrounds, the perception of scarcity of resources, the intrinsic stress of transformation, or myriad …

Women's Words About Pilgrims To Santiago De Compostela, 1890 - 1920, Maryjane Dunn

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Many scholarly articles claim that the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela was moribund at the turn of the last century based on statistical surveys of the Cathedral and Hospital Real registers, but these numbers only represent a fraction of the persons who devoutly visited Santiago Cathedral. In reality, the late nineteenth and early twentieth century pilgrimage as described by five turn-of-the-nineteenth-century female authors.- Emilia Pardo Bazán, Katherine Lee Bates, Georgiana Goddard King, Annette Meakin, and Catherine Gasquoine Hartley - is itself in a liminal state, between the traditional pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela and the newer tourist-pilgrim. The writings by …

What Is Pilgrimage?, George D. Greenia Jun 2018

What Is Pilgrimage?, George D. Greenia

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The term ‘pilgrimage’ has become a commonplace in modern conversations about any travel that is announced as ‘intentional,’ ‘purposeful,’ ‘transformative,’ or simply promises to be ‘authentic.’ Scholars have to navigate between the twin advantage and liability that pilgrimage studies operate under no one disciplinary lens or unified methodology, and the historical range is infinite. Many feel that modern tourism needs to preserve a place for the respectful non-believer without degrading the experience of traditional religious pilgrims. To some degree all intentional travelers are open to an experience of the transcendent that’s compatible with their belief systems and they are willing …

Intersectional Education, Claire Lee, Claire Marsh, Mikaela Meyer, Jessica Sullivan Jun 2018

Intersectional Education, Claire Lee, Claire Marsh, Mikaela Meyer, Jessica Sullivan

Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs

Education leads to higher future success, freedom, autonomy over one’s lifestyle, and an overall better quality of life. Unfortunately, women make up seventy percent of the world’s out-of-school youth. Additionally, minority groups are suffering from lack of access to educational resources, including native tongue instruction (Intel 2012). Not only are both groups suffering separately, but the intersection of female and minority groups are not achieving the same educational outcomes as majority or male groups. This brief explores this problem and examines how some governments are trying—or not trying—to address it.

Pathways Over The Life Course: Patterns Of Depressive Symptoms In Adolescence And Their Potential Impact On Educational Attainment, Stephen Carneiro Fernandes Jun 2018

Pathways Over The Life Course: Patterns Of Depressive Symptoms In Adolescence And Their Potential Impact On Educational Attainment, Stephen Carneiro Fernandes

MA Research Paper

This analysis draws on life course sociology to investigate the association between depression in adolescence and postsecondary completion in young adulthood. Three gaps in the mental health and education literature are addressed: lack of attention to the duration and timing of depressive symptoms, the overuse of high school degree receipt and college entry as outcome variables, and the exclusion of theoretically important confounders, such as self-rated health. Using panel data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, distinct mental health pathways that are based on a 12-item revision of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale are …

Nostalgia And Culture: The Relationship Between Indicators Of Acculturation And Nostalgia, Borsali Awicha Amina, Benhabib Abderrezak

Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets

In this article we test the relationship between indicators of acculturation (language, media, selfidentification, religion, food and clothing) and nostalgia. It checks empirically, on a sample of 201, the existence of a significant effect between our independent variables and our dependent variable. The results of analysis of variance, One-Way Anova, reveal that the home language, the food of home country, the media, self-identification with the origin country and the religion of the origin country have a signifi cant impact on nostalgia. This article contributes to new theoretical elements in the field of nostalgia and culture as a complement of several …

Heuristics For Selecting And Using Behavioural Design Methods, Nynke Tromp, Reint Jan Renes, Jaap Daalhuizen Jun 2018

Heuristics For Selecting And Using Behavioural Design Methods, Nynke Tromp, Reint Jan Renes, Jaap Daalhuizen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design for behaviour change is a young and developing practice grounded in the belief that using insights from the behavioural sciences leads to more effective interventions for behaviour change. Although a wide range of tools, techniques and methods exist to support this, few are well introduced in terms of their underlying values or paradigm for understanding behaviour. As a result, designers are often limitedly aware of why and how methods fit their personal beliefs and way of working. This not only obstructs professional development; it decreases the effectiveness and efficiency of behavioural design. In this paper we present an initial …

Design For Profit Or Prosper, Else Skjold, Frederik Larsen Jun 2018

Design For Profit Or Prosper, Else Skjold, Frederik Larsen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Over the past decade, it has become increasingly popular to position design as an excellent tool for companies and organisations to foster innovation and growth. As an adaptable practice design can be applied to serve many ends, and in the field of sustainable transition design has the potential to create new solutions due to its capacity to ‘reframe’ large-scale problems of a ‘wicked’ nature. However, as we will argue in this paper, the innovation and change promoted through design risks becoming merely a vehicle for promoting the values associated with 20th century neoliberal capitalism. We therefore want to question the …
