Adaptation Of Forage Species To Drought, D. J. Barker, J. R. Caradus Sep 2021

Adaptation Of Forage Species To Drought, D. J. Barker, J. R. Caradus

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Variability in rainfall is the single greatest cause of variation in forage production for a given site. Current climate scenarios predict future annual rainfall to decrease at some geographic regions. The intensity of future rainfall is also predicted to increase at other regions, with the expectation of greater variability in soil moisture. The adaptation of forage species to drought is an issue that is likely to remain with us into the future.

Precise definitions are critical to water relations work, and imprecise use of terms has complicated comparisons of some studies on plant response to drought. Drought is a purely …

Representing Africa In The ‘Coming To America’ Films, Samuel K. Bonsu, Delphine Godefroit-Winkel Sep 2021

Representing Africa In The ‘Coming To America’ Films, Samuel K. Bonsu, Delphine Godefroit-Winkel

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

Through an interpretive analysis of the two Eddie Murphy films "Coming to America" (CTA) and "Coming 2 America", spaced nearly 30 years apart, this review essay underscores the persistence of Orientalist Othering of Africa. The negative images of Africa that are so engrained in people have been facilitated in significant part by a strategic, but perhaps unconscious, effort to socialize audiences into an identity construction process that casts Africans as inferior. Despite attempts at favorable depictions of Africa, these processes continue to play out.

When We See Us: Coming 2 America And The Intricacies Of Black Representation And Diasporic Conversation, Terri Bowles Sep 2021

When We See Us: Coming 2 America And The Intricacies Of Black Representation And Diasporic Conversation, Terri Bowles

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

This is a review essay of the film Coming 2 America (2021) by Craig Brewer, a follow-up to the 1988 comedy classic Coming to America , which stars Eddie Murphy as a newly crowned African king confronted with shifting family dynamics and evolving challenges to his royal authority. The review examines the cultural space occupying the 30 years that separate the first film and its sequel, and interrogates the structures of popular film and comedy that situate representational discourses of gender and diasporic Black representation.

Nomadland: The New Frontiers Of The American Dream At The Periphery Of The Market, Aleksandrina Atanasova, Giana Eckhardt

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

This Dialogue contribution is based around the film Nomadland, which won five Oscars, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress. Nomadland, a captivating ode to resisting market logics of accumulation, delivers a gripping image of what life looks like in the absence of possessions. Navigating between the extremes of lack and social displacement, and community and newfound ability to live life with little, the nomads find ways to live in the face of despair and disenchantment. Nomadland is a critique of the death of the American dream while at the same time a story of solidarity amongst the dispossessed.

Trust, Power, And Transformation In The Prison Classroom, Fran Fairbairn Sep 2021

Trust, Power, And Transformation In The Prison Classroom, Fran Fairbairn

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

This article does three things. First, it asks a new question about transformative education, namely ‘what is the role of power and trust in the decision of whether to transform one’s meaning scheme in the face of new information or whether to simply reject the new information?’ Secondly, it develops a five-stage model which elaborates on the role of this decision in transformative learning.[1] Finally, it uses grounded-theory and the five-stage model to argue that power and trust play an important role in facilitating transformative learning.

[1] This account should be thought of as complementary to (not exclusionary of) Mezirow’s …

What Is Philosophy In Prison? George Eliot And The Search For Moral Insight, Alison Liebling Sep 2021

What Is Philosophy In Prison? George Eliot And The Search For Moral Insight, Alison Liebling

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

I argue in this article that people in prison make excellent philosophers, for reasons related to what they are deprived of. I also suggest that great novels constitute, or at the very least, introduce us to, philosophy. Some of the deepest questions about human life can be addressed by fusing philosophical thinking with empirical research in prisons. Prisoners talk with depth and insight about what it is to feel human, what matters most in human experience, and the importance of the ‘vibrations of fellow feeling’.

Bridging A Gap Of Understanding: A Model Of Experiential Learning For Incarcerated Students And Non-Incarcerated Undergraduates, Dale Brown, Zoann K. Snyder Sep 2021

Bridging A Gap Of Understanding: A Model Of Experiential Learning For Incarcerated Students And Non-Incarcerated Undergraduates, Dale Brown, Zoann K. Snyder

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

Service learning has evolved as a primary experience-based curriculum for undergraduate students. But much of what universities put forward as service learning is not a genuine engagement with community partners to help advance meaningful social change to address social problems. In this paper, we outline our preliminary attempt to do just that—what we call The Bridge Model. The discussion that follows occurs in the context of a semester-long project between undergraduate students at a Midwestern University (MU) and incarcerated participants from the university’s prison education program. First, we briefly situate the partnership in terms of its theoretical background in experiential …

No Cell For The Soul: Prison, Philosophy And Bernard Stiegler - A Short Appreciation, Rod Earle Sep 2021

No Cell For The Soul: Prison, Philosophy And Bernard Stiegler - A Short Appreciation, Rod Earle

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

Bernard Stiegler was a French philosopher who served 5 years in prison for a series of bank robberies committed in his youth. He died in August 2020, aged just 68, a professor celebrated in the highest ranks of continental philosophy. Stiegler subsequently published over 30 books, at the core of which is the series tellingly gathered under the title ‘Time and Technics’. His essay, ‘How I became a philosopher’, convinced me he, and it, should be on every prison philosophy course. In this article I outline why, as a convict criminologist, I feel an affinity with Stiegler’s project.

Rethinking Social Reintegration And Prison: A Critical Analysis Of An Educational Proposal For An Alternative Model In Brazil, Sergio Grossi Sep 2021

Rethinking Social Reintegration And Prison: A Critical Analysis Of An Educational Proposal For An Alternative Model In Brazil, Sergio Grossi

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

The call for social reintegration of prisoners, in many cases, does not work or has been abandoned, leaving the question of inclusivity regarding the imprisoned an open challenge in contemporary societies. My study provides a critical analysis of a model defined as an educational system of social reintegration, which aspires to be an alternative to imprisonment in Brazil and worldwide by proposing a reduction in the recidivism rate at a lower cost. I discuss the possibilities of social reintegration and the educational conceptions and practices that can emerge from it, though a document analysis and ethnography of two model units. …

Philosophy In Prisons And The Cultivation Of Intellectual Character, Duncan Pritchard Sep 2021

Philosophy In Prisons And The Cultivation Of Intellectual Character, Duncan Pritchard

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

There have recently been a series of prominent projects in the UK that aim to bring philosophy into the heart of prison education. The aim of this paper is to consider a possible rationale for this pedagogical development. A distinction is drawn between a content and a sensibility approach to teaching philosophy, where the latter is primarily concerned not with teaching a particular subject matter but rather with developing a certain kind of critical expertise. It is argued that the sensibility conception of teaching philosophy dovetails with an influential account of the epistemic aim of education in terms of the …

Exploring The Relationship Between Education And Rehabilitation In The Prison Context, Lorraine Higgins Sep 2021

Exploring The Relationship Between Education And Rehabilitation In The Prison Context, Lorraine Higgins

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

This article examines the relationship between education and rehabilitation within the prison context. It begins by exploring the concept of rehabilitation, examining if prison rehabilitation is possible or if it is what Pat Carlen describes as a “penal imaginary”. Drawing on this idea, it considers how rehabilitation may act as a way of legitimising imprisonment and whether rehabilitation is in fact damaging and criminogenic. It then moves to explore other models of rehabilitation and imprisonment that may offer a more person-centred approach. Section two of the article begins by discussing understandings of adult education. It examines conflicting interpretations of education, …

Adolescent Victim Types Across The Popularity Status Hierarchy: Differences In Internalizing Symptoms, Sarah T. Malamut, Molly Dawes, Yvonne Van Den Berg, Tessa A.M. Lansu, David Schwartz, Antonius H.N. Cillessen Sep 2021

Adolescent Victim Types Across The Popularity Status Hierarchy: Differences In Internalizing Symptoms, Sarah T. Malamut, Molly Dawes, Yvonne Van Den Berg, Tessa A.M. Lansu, David Schwartz, Antonius H.N. Cillessen

Faculty Publications

Previous studies have called attention to the fact that popular youth are not immune to peer victimization, suggesting there is heterogeneity in the popularity of victims. Yet, no study to date has determined whether victims with different levels of popularity status can be identified using person-oriented analysis. Such analysis is critically needed to confirm the existence of popular victims. Further, there remains a paucity of research on internalizing indices of such popular victims, especially compared to other victim and non-victim groups. To address this gap in the research literature, the current study used latent profile analysis to identify subgroups of …

Gender Discrimination In Accessing Finance By Women-Owned Businesses: A Review, Sumanjeet Singh, Bishnu Mohan Dash

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article comprehensively presents evidence of shared gender economics in accessing credit for women-owned ventures. The ‘she’ based approach has faced financial-market differentiations when it comes to women’s access to finance. By reviewing and analysing approximately 125 articles, the researchers try to seek an overview of the degree of influenced financial availability to women-owned businesses, proclivity covers existing, and relevant studies based on pragmatism of gender bigotry, deep-rooted gender biases, and differences in cost and conditions observed by women-owned enterprises in accessing credit, which is an essential driver for businesses’ success. Assessing The Extent Of Domestic Violence Against Indian Women After The Implementation Of The Domestic Violence Act Of India, 2005, Archana Singh, Pushpendra Singh

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper aims to dissect and analyze the trends of domestic violence against women in India. It will explore the factors contributing to the risk and prevalence of violence against women following the implementation of the Domestic Violence Act of India in 2005. This study also assesses the magnitude of violence that makes women vulnerable. In addressing the above-mentioned objective, this study has used data from the National Family and Health Survey collected in 2005-06 and 2015-16. In the first stage of analysis, the magnitude of violence was estimated using socio-economic and demographic measures. In the second stage, the risk …

‘A Night Of Shame’: A Quantitative Content Analysis Of Newspaper Narratives Of The Mass Molestation Event In Bangalore, India, Vaibhav Shwetangbhai Diwanji, Awais Saleem, Jaejin Lee Sep 2021

‘A Night Of Shame’: A Quantitative Content Analysis Of Newspaper Narratives Of The Mass Molestation Event In Bangalore, India, Vaibhav Shwetangbhai Diwanji, Awais Saleem, Jaejin Lee

Journal of International Women's Studies

On December 31, 2016 amidst New Year’s Eve revelry in Bangalore, India, about 700 young women faced a mass molestation. This research analyzed and compared 299 news articles (N=299) between January 1, 2017 and February 1, 2017 from three leading English language newspapers in India through a quantitative content analysis. Results indicated that there were differences in how the regional and national newspapers framed their stories. While national newspapers deployed the episodic frame in their news stories, the local newspaper used both thematic and episodic frames. The episodic frame focuses on individual events, whereas the thematic frame focuses …

The Arab Spring And Women’S (Cyber)Activism: “Fourth Wave Democracy In The Making?” Case Study Of Egypt, Tunisia, And Morocco, Maha Tazi Sep 2021

The Arab Spring And Women’S (Cyber)Activism: “Fourth Wave Democracy In The Making?” Case Study Of Egypt, Tunisia, And Morocco, Maha Tazi

Journal of International Women's Studies

According to Huntington’s (1991) theory of “reverse democracy”, countries undergoing (or having undergone) a transition to democracy during a wave are always subject to democratic backsliding in the subsequent wave. During the third wave democratization, the fall of the Soviet Union and other despotic regimes in Latin America led to the gradual “autocratization” of many of these countries in the late 1990s and early 2000s. More recently, in 2011, the collapse of several authoritarian regimes in the Middle East and North African (MENA) region underscored important aspects of democratization, a process in which both women and new media technologies …

A Deviant Or A Victim Of Pervasive Stigmatization: Wicked Women In Kavita Kané’S Lanka’S Princess, Meenakshi Meenakshi, Nagendra Kumar Sep 2021

A Deviant Or A Victim Of Pervasive Stigmatization: Wicked Women In Kavita Kané’S Lanka’S Princess, Meenakshi Meenakshi, Nagendra Kumar

Journal of International Women's Studies

Building on the foundational theories of Judith Butler and Edwin Schur, this paper scrutinises the traditional myth of the Hindu epic the Ramayana and argues: (1) how socially constructed gender performance is naturalised by cultural ideology and (2) how infringement of this performance leads to labelling individuals as deviant. Women who transgress these cultural ideologies are defined as deviant and subjected to various punishments, from public humiliation to genital mutilation. Through an exploration of the novelist Kavita Kané’s mythology inspired novel Lanka’s Princess (2017), this paper focuses on the mythical figure known as Surpankha whose character embodies masculine attributes …

Warrior Mothers: Narratives Of Women From The United Liberation Front Of Assam (Ulfa), Munmi Pathak

Journal of International Women's Studies

The archetype of the mother is always perceived as ‘pacifist’ in war and conflict situations. However, there are numerous examples when mothers are not ‘pacifist’ but become participants and perpetrators of war. This article, through the analysis of the experiences of the mothers in the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), an armed nationalist organization waging war against the Indian nation-state to establish ‘sovereignty’ and ‘liberate’ Assam since1979, argues that mothers can also be warriors, going beyond their ‘pacifist’ archetype. With the analysis of the oral narratives of the women cadres of the organization, this article discusses how these mothers …

Understanding The Hidden Aspects Of Sex Trafficking Of Girl Children In Central India, Usha Rana

Journal of International Women's Studies

This study examines the deep-rooted socio-cultural practices of institutional prostitution, which is one of the factors contributing to sex trafficking in Central India. There are some states where women and girls are vulnerable to trafficking. The Honorable Supreme Court of India became aware of the issue and directed the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) to make a special report on the missing women and children. According to the NCRB report, Madhya Pradesh (M.P.) state ranks first in child trafficking and third in women's trafficking. The study discusses traditional prostitution practices among some communities in the state, such as Banchhada, Bedia, …

Making Change On Gender-Based Violence: Assessing Shifting Political Opportunities In Canada, Lisa Boucher Sep 2021

Making Change On Gender-Based Violence: Assessing Shifting Political Opportunities In Canada, Lisa Boucher

Journal of International Women's Studies

Feminist anti-violence organizations provide much needed services and advocate for changes to culture and policy. However, their ability to continue with this work is jeopardized by fraught and changing relations with governments. This is especially the case for state-funded feminist service organizations which, through their ties to state funders, risk their ability to engage in advocacy. While scholars and activists warn of the challenges associated with state funding, situating funding relationships within particular social, historical, geographic, and political contexts can illuminate both the threats facing feminist service organizations, as well as openings in the political opportunity structure. Using the Canadian …

The Fight Goes On! Intersections Of Oppression In The Spanish Feminist Movement, Adriana Sandu, Victoria Pérez Fernández

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article provides a critical exploration of alliances amongst women’s groups within the feminist movement in Spain during and prior to the International Women’s Day strike on the 8th of March, 2018. The main focus of the article is on the Spanish feminist fight against gender violence, aiming to understand how this debate is framed, who makes the claims, and what structural inequalities are being preserved in this process. Following on from previous work on this topic, it aims to identify positions of power and privilege within the feminist movement in Spain. Drawing on social movement theory as well …
