Tax Evasion And Illicit Cigarettes In California: Prevalence And Demand-Side Correlates, James Prieger
Tax Evasion And Illicit Cigarettes In California: Prevalence And Demand-Side Correlates, James Prieger
School of Public Policy Working Papers
Unlike some areas of crime, participation in illicit tobacco markets is not rare and spans most sociodemographic groups. Measurement of the scale of illicit trade in cigarettes usually are for markets with recently increased (or continually increasing) excise taxes. This study examines survey data from adult cigarette smokers in California at a time when prices and taxes had been fairly stable for many years. Even with no recent price shocks in the market, the results indicate that one-third of cigarette packs may lack a valid tax stamp and that between 18% to 25% of smokers avoided taxes by bringing cigarettes …
Associate And Baccalaureate Degree Nursing Students' Knowledge Of The Attitudes Toward Medication Errors And Reporting Medication Errors: Implications For Curriculum Development, Tabatha D. Teal
Dissertations
This paper evaluates senior nursing students' knowledge and attitudes of medication errors and reporting errors. This study was conducted to evaluate a need for improvements to nursing education on these two concepts. This mixed method study was conducted using a modified version of the Medication Administration Error Reporting Survey by Wakefield, Uden-Holman, and Wakefield (2005) and focus group sessions at four nursing programs in the Southern United States. Medication errors continue to be a threat to patient safety and underreporting exists due to the stigma surrounding admitting a mistake. Evaluating nursing students' knowledge and attitudes on these concepts is a …
Where They Sing Solo: Accounting For Cross-Cultural Variation In Collective Music-Making In Theories Of Music Evolution, Aniruddh D. Patel, Christopher Von Rueden
Where They Sing Solo: Accounting For Cross-Cultural Variation In Collective Music-Making In Theories Of Music Evolution, Aniruddh D. Patel, Christopher Von Rueden
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
Collective, synchronous music-making is far from ubiquitous across traditional, small-scale societies. We describe societies that lack collective music and offer hypotheses to help explain this cultural variation. Without identifying the factors that explain variation in collective music-making across these societies, theories of music evolution based on social bonding (Savage et al.) or coalition signaling (Mehr et al.) remain incomplete.
“Sweep All These Pests From Our Midst”: The Anti-Chinese Prostitution Movement, The Criminalization Of Chinese Women, And The First Federal Immigration Law, Laura Curry
West Virginia University Historical Review
Often forgotten in light of later pieces of anti-Chinese legislation, the Page Act of 1875 and the anti-Chinese prostitution movement were critical in creating a legal precedent for racially exclusionary immigration laws. Religious leaders in California aggressively campaigned against Chinese prostitution by creating rehabilitation centers for former Chinese prostitutes, investigating Chinese women arriving at the port, and focusing media attention on the issue. Concentrated specifically on Chinese prostitution, religious leaders created an implicit association between Chinese women and prostitution while ignoring the larger white prostitution trade. The potential for Chinese women to give birth to Chinese American citizens also made …
Y’All Means All: The Southern Queer Experience And Grassroots Archives As Places Of Remembrance, Emma R. Johansen, Emma R. Johansen
Y’All Means All: The Southern Queer Experience And Grassroots Archives As Places Of Remembrance, Emma R. Johansen, Emma R. Johansen
The Cardinal Edge
While the burgeoning field of queer history grows in academic prominence and scholarship, southern queer identities and histories are left in the gaps of this trailblazing research. As a segment of a larger senior honors thesis on gay press in Kentucky and the broader American South, this brief research report will specifically examine queer rurality, visibility, and space in the archive. This report also aims to highlight the political and sociological importance of remembering, studying, and teaching queer heritage, especially in the rural American South. This report argues that the complexities of southern queer histories are especially felt in the …

Organizational Change: Where Have All The Leaders Gone When Creating Anti-Harassment Cultures, Krystal Brue
Organizational Change: Where Have All The Leaders Gone When Creating Anti-Harassment Cultures, Krystal Brue
Administrative Issues Journal
Media coverage of recent high-profile sexual harassment scandals and subsequent #MeToo publicity confirms that sexual harassment continues to plague corporate cultures. Organizations have previously relied on professional training and policy creations to address workplace misconduct. These initiativesare primarilypredicatedon legal and compliance efforts to reduce misconduct and maintain more harassment free environments. Even with calls from regulatory agencies and media coverage, corporate cultures do not appear to have changed. This exploratory investigation suggests that organizationscontinue to rely on established methods of addressing sexual harassment and shouldutilize behavioral modeling to improve corporate cultures. Ideas forwarded within thispaper will begin discussions regarding the …

The Role Of Motivation In Online Professional Learning, Minseong Kim, Tami L. Knotts, Nancy D. Albers
Administrative Issues Journal
The importance of online learning has been highlighted by higher education, and online program administrators have looked for management strategies to establish competitive advantages through student satisfaction and loyalty. This research investigated theroles of various learning motivations (i.e., autonomous motivation, external motivation, need achievement, goal setting, social comparison, and reinforcement), perceived value, and satisfaction to predict students’ loyalty toward an online program in the MBA context. Data were collected from online panel members of Qualtrics who were currently enrolled in online MBA programs in the United States. The empirical findings identify that perceived value was significantly influenced by external motivation, …
Historical Experience Of Tackling Original And Leading Problems Of Science And Technology—Case Study Of National Superconductivity Research, Chao Gu
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Tackling original and leading problems of science and technology (TOLPST) is the key to strengthening national strategic scientific and technological forces and achieving scientific and technological self-reliance of China. The national superconductivity research which began in 1987 is a typical TOLPST. It has helped China's high-temperature superconductivity research leap from backwardness, follow-up phase to parallel running state or even leading position, but it did not produce original innovation. The historical experience of national superconductivity research has important implications for TOLPST: (1) Basic research should be categorized and accurately implemented, especially the original innovation should be distinguished from the application-oriented research …
A Qualitative Examination Of Female Sex Offender Grooming Of Child Victims, Mollee Katherin Steely Smith
A Qualitative Examination Of Female Sex Offender Grooming Of Child Victims, Mollee Katherin Steely Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Sex offenders often engage in manipulative and coercive behavior to begin, conceal, and continue to sexually abuse children over time. They utilize grooming behaviors to gain the trust and compliance of their victims. Grooming is the process by which an offender prepares a victim, significant adult and peers, and the environment for the eventual abuse. Most of what is understood regarding grooming behavior derives from exclusively male samples, which is problematic because male and female sex offenders vary widely in their offending patterns, motivations, and behaviors. For the present study, I examined the nature of sexual grooming among a sample …
Agency: What Does It Mean To Be A Human Being?, Richard N. Williams, Edwin E. Gantt, Lane Fischer
Agency: What Does It Mean To Be A Human Being?, Richard N. Williams, Edwin E. Gantt, Lane Fischer
Faculty Publications
This paper will look at the results of what has been termed “the crisis of modernism” and the related rise of postmodern perspectives in the 19th and 20th centuries. It concentrates on what is arguably the chief casualty of this crisis – human agency – and the social science that has developed out of the crisis. We argue that modern and postmodern social science ultimately obviate human agency in the understanding of what it means to be a human being. Attention is given to the contemporary intellectual world and the way in which it has been deeply informed by neo-Hegelian …

Agency To Transform: How Did A Grade 5 Community Co-Configure Dynamic Knowledge Building Practices In A Yearlong Science Inquiry?, Jianwei Zhang, Dan Tao
Educational Theory and Practice Faculty Scholarship
This study explores emergent reflective structuration as a new form of shared regulation. The purpose is to support students in taking on high-level epistemic agency as they co-configure dynamic inquiry pathways that unfold over long periods of time. With the teacher’s support, students not only regulate their inquiry and collaboration following pre-scripted structures, but they also co-construct shared inquiry pathways to frame and reframe their community practices in response to progress and needs that emerge over time. Our data analysis investigates the temporal and interactional processes by which members of a Grade 5 classroom co-configured their knowledge building pathways in …
Collapse At The Confluence: A Comprehensive Analysis Of The Binghamton City School District, Bryn Lauer, Lucas Peterka
Collapse At The Confluence: A Comprehensive Analysis Of The Binghamton City School District, Bryn Lauer, Lucas Peterka
Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal
This project analyzes student exam scores in the Binghamton City School District (BCSD) in comparison to New York State averages and to the school districts in Troy, Schenectady, Utica, and Niagara Falls. By collecting data from twenty-one different school years, provided by New York State on the New York State Education Data Site (NYSED), we illustrate a clear decline from the state mean in Binghamton’s academic performance that remains in line with the pattern of academic performance in the other four, previously mentioned, school districts. To look at why this is occurring, we collected population data from the U.S. Census …

Police Officers’ Best Friend?: An Exploratory Analysis Of The Effect Of Service Dogs On Perceived Organizational Support In Policing, Kenneth M. Quick, Eric L. Piza
Publications and Research
This study explored the effectiveness of a novel technique for police departments to support their officers and promote wellness: the use of service dogs. We evaluated officer perceptions in two mid-sized, municipal police departments that have wellness programs with a service dog that is permanently assigned to a full-time police officer handler: Groton and Naugatuck, Connecticut. We assessed 6 factors believed to influence police officer wellness including: operational and organizational stress using the Police Stress Questionnaire (McCreary & Thompson, 2006); topical stressors including those related to the COVID-19 pandemic, police use of force and community relations, and police reform efforts; …
Widowed Young: The Role Of Stressors And Protective Factors For Resilience In Coping With Spousal Loss, Jane Marie Chami, Julie Ann Pooley
Widowed Young: The Role Of Stressors And Protective Factors For Resilience In Coping With Spousal Loss, Jane Marie Chami, Julie Ann Pooley
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
While distressing, late life spousal loss is considered a normative life event and most demonstrate resilient recovery from grief. However, for 5–7% of the population spousal loss comes early, before the age of 50, and little is known about the factors that influence adjustment in this population. We used the DPM integrative framework to examine correlates and predictors of mental wellbeing and grief intensity in an international sample of 603 young widows and widowers. Contrary to existing bereavement research, loss-orientated stressors (e.g., expectedness and cause of death) did not predict bereavement outcomes. Employment and financial wellbeing were the only statistically …

Making It Just In Time: Author-Creator Matsumoto Taiyō, Natsume Fusanosuke, Jon Holt, Teppei Fukuda
World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations
Translated by Jon Holt and Teppei Fukuda
The first time I can remember encountering Matsumoto Taiyō’s work was probably when he released his short story collection, Blue Spring (Aoi haru - Matsumoto Taiyō tanpenshū [stories published from 1990 to 1993; Shōgakukan, 1993]). All of the stories concern a bunch of young dudes -- full of desires, frustrations, and violent tendencies -- and no chance they can ever get past those things. I thought to myself at that time, “Ah, I bet this stuff means a lot to readers in their teens, but they don’t really do anything for me.” …
Heat Exposure Effect On Ghanaian Mining Workers: A Mediated-Moderation Approach, Victor Fannam Nunfam, Ebenezer Afrifa-Yamoah
Heat Exposure Effect On Ghanaian Mining Workers: A Mediated-Moderation Approach, Victor Fannam Nunfam, Ebenezer Afrifa-Yamoah
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The lack of empirical evidence on the effect of heat exposure on the health and safety, productivity, psychological behaviour and social well-being outcomes of small- and large-scale mining workers in Africa has derailed concrete policy directions and interventions. An explanatory cross-sectional survey involving 320 small- and large-scale mining workers was used to assess this research gap. A path analysis was used to model health and safety, productivity, psychological behaviour and social well-being as a function of heat exposure, mediated and moderated by adaptation strategies and barriers, while controlling for age, gender, level of education, years of working experience and workplace …
Adaptation Of Forage Species To Drought, D. J. Barker, J. R. Caradus
Adaptation Of Forage Species To Drought, D. J. Barker, J. R. Caradus
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Variability in rainfall is the single greatest cause of variation in forage production for a given site. Current climate scenarios predict future annual rainfall to decrease at some geographic regions. The intensity of future rainfall is also predicted to increase at other regions, with the expectation of greater variability in soil moisture. The adaptation of forage species to drought is an issue that is likely to remain with us into the future.
Precise definitions are critical to water relations work, and imprecise use of terms has complicated comparisons of some studies on plant response to drought. Drought is a purely …
Representing Africa In The ‘Coming To America’ Films, Samuel K. Bonsu, Delphine Godefroit-Winkel
Representing Africa In The ‘Coming To America’ Films, Samuel K. Bonsu, Delphine Godefroit-Winkel
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Through an interpretive analysis of the two Eddie Murphy films "Coming to America" (CTA) and "Coming 2 America", spaced nearly 30 years apart, this review essay underscores the persistence of Orientalist Othering of Africa. The negative images of Africa that are so engrained in people have been facilitated in significant part by a strategic, but perhaps unconscious, effort to socialize audiences into an identity construction process that casts Africans as inferior. Despite attempts at favorable depictions of Africa, these processes continue to play out.
When We See Us: Coming 2 America And The Intricacies Of Black Representation And Diasporic Conversation, Terri Bowles
When We See Us: Coming 2 America And The Intricacies Of Black Representation And Diasporic Conversation, Terri Bowles
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
This is a review essay of the film Coming 2 America (2021) by Craig Brewer, a follow-up to the 1988 comedy classic Coming to America , which stars Eddie Murphy as a newly crowned African king confronted with shifting family dynamics and evolving challenges to his royal authority. The review examines the cultural space occupying the 30 years that separate the first film and its sequel, and interrogates the structures of popular film and comedy that situate representational discourses of gender and diasporic Black representation.
