Attachment To God, Locus Of Control, And Outcomes In The Brief Alcohol Screening And Intervention For College Students, Misty Schoephoerster Apr 2017

Attachment To God, Locus Of Control, And Outcomes In The Brief Alcohol Screening And Intervention For College Students, Misty Schoephoerster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research shows that aspects of religion and spirituality can influence drinking behavior among university students. Some believe that an internalized commitment to God, or to another spiritual force, is an important component in explaining relationships between religion, spirituality, and drinking behavior. One way of understanding and measuring this internalized commitment to God is based on attachment theory. Another way of measuring and understanding internalized beliefs about the degree to which God shapes behavior is based on the social learning theory concept called locus of control. Conceptually, low God locus of control indicates that one believes God is passive and not …

Event Centrality And Bereavement Symptomatology: The Moderating Role Of Meaning Made, Benjamin W. Bellet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The centrality of a loss to a bereaved individual's identity is associated with greater symptomatology, whereas meaning made of a loss is associated with positive outcomes. This paper examines meaning made as a moderator of the relationship between event centrality and symptomatology. Our sample consisted of 204 bereaved undergraduate university students. Centrality was assessed using the Centrality of Events Scale (CES), meaning made was assessed using the Integration of Stressful Life Experiences Scale (ISLES), and symptomatology was assessed using the PTSD Checklist-Civilian (PCL-C) and Inventory of Complicated Grief-Revised (ICG-R). Meaning made had a significant moderating effect on the relationship between …

In the Fall semester of 2016, I was part of an advocacy project from the School of Social Work. Together, my class and I provided donations to families affected by the 2016 Louisiana flooding in Baton Rouge, working in tandem with their Young Women’s Christian Association Early Head Start program.

I personally implemented Google Drive into the project, publicly sharing a document from Baton Rouge’s YWCA by use of a Quick Response (QR) code and a short link.

My research focus is that Information Communications Technology (ICT) can provide for communities affected by natural disaster, as evidenced from my work …

Increasing Global Context In Social Work Education: Role Of Internationally Experienced Faculty, Sarah Dababnah Phd, Mph, Msw, Sara Goodkind Phd, Msw, Caren J. Frost Phd, Mph, Jody K. Olsen Phd, Msw

Interdisciplinary Journal of Best Practices in Global Development

The infusion of global social work concepts into social work curricula enhances the educational experience and understanding of practice, policy, and research for students at all levels. Having faculty members who participated in global work augments the presentation of these concepts in ways that connect to student learning. Yet, no known research has investigated the role of internationally experienced faculty in promoting a global perspective in social work education and practice. One mechanism for obtaining global experience is through service in the U.S. Peace Corps, an organization that has been available for U.S. citizens to serve their country since the …

Mapping Community Space And Place In Mto Wa Mbu, Tanzania Through Surveys And Gis, Jessica Craigg

Georgia College Student Research Events

Cities throughout the African continent have been developing at an unprecedented pace, many of them due to the influence of the tourism industry. This is particularly true in Tanzania, a country famous for its national parks and their draw to tourists who help provide money for development. However, the only way to get the whole story on how to spend this money is through the experiences and needs of the people themselves. This study focuses on a small town in northeastern Tanzania, Mto wa Mbu, situated near Lake Manyara National Park, and its people’s perceptions of the park and community. …

Cultural Competence Of Pre-Licensure Nursing Faculty, Colleen Marzilli, Beth Mastel-Smith

Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this study was to determine the level of cultural competence (CC) in Texas pre-licensure nursing faculty and examine the relationships between demographics and CC scores. The researchers conducted a study to determine if demographics predicted the level of CC and explored the perceptions of CC. A convergent parallel mixed-methods design used data from a 2014 online survey with a qualitative interview component. Demographics were evaluated with descriptive statistics and CC was measured with The Nurses’ Cultural Competence Scale (NCCS). Qualitative data were analyzed using a constant comparative method. The level of CC was low to moderate. Three …

Teach-Back And Its Impact On Hospital Consumer Assessment Of Healthcare Providers And Systems (Hcahps), Terri Cronbaugh

DNP and Student Works

Successful patient outcomes rely heavily on patient engagement, patient/family education, and promotion of self-management. Teach-back methodology offers the healthcare team a proven technique to determine learner's health literacy and true understanding of post-acute care needs. Based on supportive literature the following PICOT (problem, intervention, comparison, outcome, time) question was developed: For medical/surgical patients, can teach-back methodology utilized during teaching improve patient satisfaction as measured by transitional care HCAHPS scores over a 12-week period? The Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice (Iowa Model) was utilized to implement an evidence-based practice (EBP) intervention training nurses to use teach-back methodology for all education.

Improving New Graduate Critical Care Nurse Practitioner Knowledge And Retention Using A Dedicated Orientation And Mentoring Program, Katherine Huffer Apr 2017

Improving New Graduate Critical Care Nurse Practitioner Knowledge And Retention Using A Dedicated Orientation And Mentoring Program, Katherine Huffer

Dissertations

Abstract

Background: There has been a significant amount of research into the many challenges that nurse practitioners (NPs) face as they transition from school to practice, however, there is limited research on how to improve this transition. Regardless of the setting in which the NPs are working, novices NPs alike report feelings of being unprepared and experiencing high levels of stress, anxiety, fear, and frustration. New research suggests that a comprehensive NP orientation and residency programs may provide a way to integrate the new NPs into their practice environment successfully.

Method: Kern’s Six Step Approach to Curriculum Development for Medical …

Equine Assisted Therapy: Supporting Treatment For Substance Use Disorders In Alaska, Claire Gelvin-Smith Apr 2017

Equine Assisted Therapy: Supporting Treatment For Substance Use Disorders In Alaska, Claire Gelvin-Smith

Counseling

The State of Alaska demonstrates exceedingly high rates of interpersonal violence, child neglect, depression, and drug related arrests when compared with national rates. Substance use disorder is often linked with instances of interpersonal violence, child neglect, depression and judicial consequences. An equine assisted therapy program could provide support for the treatment of substance use disorders in Alaska. This project asks one basic question, "What benefits could an equine assisted therapy program provide for individuals in a level II, Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in interior Alaska?" Currently, no residential or level II treatment programs for substance use disorder in Alaska offer …

Exploring Perceptions Of Goodness Among The Malaysian And Chinese University Students: A Focus Group Study, Madiha Hashmi, Moniza Waheed, Ezhar Tamam, Steven E. Krauss Dr., Abdul Muati Ahmad

The Qualitative Report

The notion of goodness is implicitly central to the discourse relating to person perception. To date, no empirical research has focused solely upon understanding the notion of goodness and how it’s perceived and discerned in others. Utilizing focus group interviews, this paper explores how people perceive and interpret goodness in collectivist cultures of Malaysia and China. Findings revealed that Malaysian and Chinese participants had somewhat similar notions about goodness. “Concern for others’ welfare” was found to have the most resonance across the two nationalities as a key element in discerning goodness in others. Another category emerging from the findings was …

Usefulness Of Collaborative Family Engagement At Casa Of Montgomery County, Chelsea Bankes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When children are in CPS care, there is a strong desire to ensure that their cases are executed so the children end up in safe, permanent environments as quickly as possible. To facilitate this goal, there is a partnership between CPS and an organization called CASA, which provides advocacy and support to ensure that the children have their rights represented in court proceedings. To help achieve this goal, Montgomery County has implemented the Collaborative Family Engagement (CFE) model. This model seeks to obtain better outcomes for children by engaging with the child’s family and the community around them. This study …

Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Among Pediatric Nurses And The Impact On Patient Satisfaction, Maribeth Thornton Apr 2017

Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Among Pediatric Nurses And The Impact On Patient Satisfaction, Maribeth Thornton

Nursing ETDs

Compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction are two inter-related concepts. Individuals in helping professions may occasionally face compassion fatigue from giving so much of themselves to others. Compassion fatigue has been studied in a variety of settings: medical, social work, nursing, law enforcement, and fire departments, to name a few. While some researchers have studied nurses, little published work has focused exclusively on nurses who care for specialty pediatric populations. Additionally, there is scant research on whether compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue are associated with patient satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of compassion satisfaction and …
