Self-Efficacy Of Female School Board Presidents, Vicki L. Vantuyle, Sandra G. Watkins Apr 2017

Self-Efficacy Of Female School Board Presidents, Vicki L. Vantuyle, Sandra G. Watkins

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Women’s representation on school boards nearly equals that of males today. As a result women are ascending to the leadership role of school board president in greater numbers. This qualitative study of female school board presidents examined the phenomenon of being a female school board president. Eight female school board presidents from Illinois participated, responding to interview questions about their role, responsibilities, and relationships with regard to the position of board president. The response data were explored using narrative analysis. The theoretical framework for analysis was based on Bandura’s Self-Efficacy theory. Responses from the interviews were interpreted vis-à-vis themes aligned …

Cross Crossings Cautiously: Uses Of African American Vernacular English In American Literature, Emily Crnkovich Apr 2017

Cross Crossings Cautiously: Uses Of African American Vernacular English In American Literature, Emily Crnkovich

English Honors Projects

This project uses sociolinguistics to theorize the use of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) in literature across three time periods: the Antebellum era, the post-bellum/Reconstruction era, and the Harlem Renaissance. Different dialects of English encode different power structures, and in order to interrogate those power structures I track how white and black authors represent the language of African American characters on the page and how audiences interpret that language. I find that African American authors tend to embrace the variability and diversity of natural language better than their white counterparts, whose use of literary dialect often falls into essentialist clichés.

Sources Of Sexual Knowledge, Sex Negativity, And Sexual Shame: Honors Capstone Thesis, Tara Joyce

KSU Journey Honors College Capstones and Theses

This study examined relations between (a) the sources of people’s knowledge about sex, (b) their trust in information obtained from each source, (c) sex-negative attitudes and misinformation about sex (SNAM), and (d) sexual shame. Using an online questionnaire, 354 participants from a large, comprehensive university in Georgia indicated the relative amount they learned about sex from 11 sources, the degree of trust in each as a source of sexual information, agreement with the 45 items comprising the measure of SNAM, and the Kyle Inventory of Sexual Shame (Kyle, 2013). The more participants expressed sex-negative attitudes and endorsed misconceptions about sex …

Let’S Talk About Weight Bias Attitudes Among Future Health Professionals, Rees Checketts Apr 2017

Let’S Talk About Weight Bias Attitudes Among Future Health Professionals, Rees Checketts

Student Research Symposium

Weight bias has been linked with obesity epidemic and other weight-related concerns such as eating disorders in our society. Previous studies have found that healthcare providers such as medical doctors, nurses, and dieticians showed stigmatizing attitudes toward patients who are categorized as overweight or obese individuals. Due to those professionals’ negative attitudes toward the particular vulnerable population, patients expressed lack of willingness to seek out for help or students experienced negative psychological states. To find needs of weight bias training for undergraduate students in health education and related fields, we investigated weight bias attitudes among undergraduate students in the rocky …

Vegetarian/Vegan Nutrient Intake At Usu, Richard Thomas, Jesse Magliari, Rebecca Nelson Apr 2017

Vegetarian/Vegan Nutrient Intake At Usu, Richard Thomas, Jesse Magliari, Rebecca Nelson

Student Research Symposium

This research study focuses on the vegetarian and vegan groups in our community, specifically undergraduates at USU. The specialized diets vegetarians and vegans follow can cause nutritional deficiency in iron and protein. Iron and protein are particularly difficult for vegetarians and vegans to obtain, especially for those new to the diet. Our research study seeks to identify whether on and off campus vegetarians and vegans obtain sufficient iron and protein levels according to the USDA’s recommended daily amounts. This was accomplished through participant 24 hour diet recalls. Data gathered from the 24hr diet recall included time of day, amount, type, …

Be Fruitful And Multiply: Fertility And Tradeoffs In Latter-Day Saints, Amanda Cook, Claire Hanson Apr 2017

Be Fruitful And Multiply: Fertility And Tradeoffs In Latter-Day Saints, Amanda Cook, Claire Hanson

Student Research Symposium

In humans, there are evolutionary trade-offs between energy allocated to reproduction and embodied capital (investing in extended development). We see selection toward early and frequent reproduction over embodied capital in the predominantly Latter-Day Saints (LDS) culture of Utah.

We hypothesize that encouragement toward reproduction in LDS individuals has tradeoffs with embodied capital compared to non-LDS individuals. We collected data through an anonymous online survey (Qualtrics) distributed to a stratified random sample of LDS and non-LDS college students and recent graduates of Utah State University in Logan, UT (n=45) and Texas A&M in College Station, Texas (n=17) . We include questions …

Supervised Release Sentences Of Child Pornography Offenders In U.S. District Courts: An Examination Of Disparity, Niquita Marie Loftis Apr 2017

Supervised Release Sentences Of Child Pornography Offenders In U.S. District Courts: An Examination Of Disparity, Niquita Marie Loftis

Dissertations

The statutory supervised release sentencing range for child pornography offenders convicted in U.S. District Courts is five years to life. However, the guideline policy statement contained in the Federal Sentencing Guidelines recommends lifetime supervision for all child pornography offenders. U.S. Sentencing Commission (USSC) data for fiscal year 2012 indicate that only approximately 33% of child pornography offenders were sentenced to lifetime supervision. This variation suggests the possibility of unwarranted supervised release sentencing disparities. The dissertation explores this possibility by examining the effects of individual-level legal and extralegal factors and district-level contextual factors on supervised release sentences for child pornography offenders. …

Abstract: News and social media tycoons including YouTube and Facebook give the world access to social injustices on a day to day basis. A particular injustice that riddles the African American community is the unjust killing of men and women at the hands of police. Often times, these men and women leave behind children that require assistance in which is not offered. There has …

The Anchor: 2017

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). The Lived Experience Of Relationship Transition In Significant Others Caring For A Partner With Younger Onset Dementia, Diane Peyser Apr 2017

The Lived Experience Of Relationship Transition In Significant Others Caring For A Partner With Younger Onset Dementia, Diane Peyser

Theses & Dissertations

Background

Approximately 5% of dementia sufferers are individuals younger than age 65. The majority of studies have focused on individuals with late-onset dementia. The limited studies conducted on caregivers of younger onset dementia individuals identify that they have a different set of needs based upon their unique experiences. Significant others such as spouses frequently fulfill the role of caregiver for a partner with younger onset dementia. Little is known about the lived experience of significant others caring for a partner with younger onset dementia in the context of relationship transition that occurs in this dynamic situation. This study illustrates the …

“Expanding That Story:” How Nonprofit Leaders Portray The Population They Serve, Sarah N. Koth Apr 2017

“Expanding That Story:” How Nonprofit Leaders Portray The Population They Serve, Sarah N. Koth

SCOM Undergraduate Research Conference

This research aims to understand how nonprofits leaders portray the populations they serve, specifically populations in low-economic status who receive material resources. Previous literature exploring the nonprofit sector considers volunteers and their experiences, although leaders set the tone for the organization’s language, and ultimately the quality of service. Five nonprofit organization (NPO) leaders from different organizations participated in semi-structured, in-depth interviews that lasted between 33 to 72 minutes. Questions inquired about their average week on the job, their contact with clients and volunteers, and how they want the public to view the population they serve. Accounts showed that nonprofit leaders …

Speech-Language Pathologists’ Estimates Of Bolus Sizes Used During Dysphagia Evaluations, Joyanna E. Struzzieri Apr 2017

Speech-Language Pathologists’ Estimates Of Bolus Sizes Used During Dysphagia Evaluations, Joyanna E. Struzzieri

Theses & Honors Papers

Dysphagia evaluations play an important role in the assessment and treatment of people with swallowing problems. Protocols and methods for assessment vary greatly among clinicians, however, all assessments involve trials of food and liquid boluses given across different consistencies and in varying amounts. Thin and thick liquids, thin puree, thick puree or pudding, and solid consistencies are widely utilized for dysphagia evaluations. The amounts of food and liquids that are given drive therapeutic recommendations for bite and sip sizes. It is unknown if the bite and sip sizes used during dysphagia assessments also vary among SLPs and/or if these amounts …
