The Effect Of Self-Esteem On Perceptions Of Abuse, Tabitha Dibacco
The Effect Of Self-Esteem On Perceptions Of Abuse, Tabitha Dibacco
Honors Projects
Intimate partner violence has been shown to have serious mental, physical, and emotional consequences for both men and women. Past research has considered low self-esteem as a risk factor, outcome, and moderator of abuse; however, less is known about whether self-esteem influences abuse perception. This study sought to examine the relationships between self-esteem, gender, and type of abuse in college students’ perceptions of abuse. The sample consisted of 207 undergraduate students (140 female, 64 male, and 3 preferred not to answer) between the age of 18-23 years (M= 19.7, SD= 2.4). The procedure included an Abusive Scenarios Survey, the Rosenberg …

Receptive identification skills are important for any child to learn. Without these skills, various aspects of development can become impaired. There are many ways to teach receptive identification. This project pulled ideas from previous studies on within-session progressive gestural-prompt delays as well as the different methods of teaching receptive identification skills, simple-conditional method and the condition-only method. The student was not acquiring receptive identification skills with the traditional methods used in the classroom. Within-session progressive gestural-prompt delay was used in this project to teach receptive identification of objects. An AB single-subject design was used in this project. The student responded …

Grounded Theory And The Conundrum Of Literature Review: Framework For Novice Researchers, Mohamed T. El Hussein, Andrea Kennedy, Brent Oliver
Grounded Theory And The Conundrum Of Literature Review: Framework For Novice Researchers, Mohamed T. El Hussein, Andrea Kennedy, Brent Oliver
The Qualitative Report
The issue of the literature review remains a conundrum and a controversy within the discourse on grounded theory methodology. Grounded theory researchers are expected to minimize preconceptions to ensure the concept of interest is grounded in data, yet at the same time are required to evaluate existing literature to support institutional ethics and scientific review of the research proposal. In addressing this dilemma, we espouse that literature review in grounded theory should comprise a multistage nonlinear approach to the literature and introduce a framework for novice grounded theory researchers. This framework offers a reflexive, dynamic and integrative process for conducting …
Mexicans In The U.S And Hiv: Reviewing Social And Cultural Factors, Eduardo Alvarez
Mexicans In The U.S And Hiv: Reviewing Social And Cultural Factors, Eduardo Alvarez
Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society
Mexican immigrants in the United States continue to struggle with disproportionate incidences of HIV infection. Behaviors that contributed to the development of AIDS among Mexican immigrants were the lack of condom use, engaging in risky sexual behavior, and not having HIV testing (Martínez Donate, et al., 2015). While these risk factors are preventable, religious and social stigmatization present within the Mexican community generate shame and embarrassment. This discourages Mexican immigrants from seeking health services, such as HIV testing. An estimated 20% of HIV positive Mexican immigrants are unaware of their condition, and contribute to the spread of the virus (Hall …
The Impact Of Motivational Interviewing On Criminal Offenders, Hayley Mena
The Impact Of Motivational Interviewing On Criminal Offenders, Hayley Mena
Academic Festival
For my research project I will be studying the effects that Motivational Interviewing has on criminal offenders in a probation office setting. Motivational Interviewing has been proven effective with substance abusers, so if implemented correctly it may also be effective with criminal offenders, and those that are also substance abusers. I believe that motivational interviewing will help to decrease recidivism, and the original LSI score that the client is assigned at intake. The clients took their LSI during intake, and the LSI tells probation what their top three criminogenic needs that need to be addressed are, in addition to what …

The Impact Of Breastfeeding Education On Attitudes Toward Breastfeeding In Adolescents Attending Public Urban, Suburban, And Rural High Schools, Shauna Santos-Dempsey (Class Of 2017)
Academic Festival
The medically supported benefits of breastfeeding for mothers and their children include, but are not limited to : decreasing the risk of pneumonia, diarrhea, and type-II diabetes, acting as a method of hormonal birth control, and decreasing the incidence of post-partum depression (World Health Organization, 2015). According to the World Health Organization (2015), breastfeeding is also the most economically secure way to ensure proper nutrition for an infant. However, cultural norms of the United States, as evidenced in the media and public opinion, exploit and sexualize the bodies of women. Many families, therefore, are hesitant to breastfeed for fear of …

The Center for Disease Control ranked suicide as the second leading cause of death for American adolescents (2015). This crisis of adolescent suicide warrants evaluation and improvement of current suicide prevention practices. The Emergency Department (ED) offers 24-hour services and may be the only organized healthcare for utilized by some individuals. Nurses are the front-line provider of care in the ED and this role offers opportunity to identify an adolescent with increased suicide risk. The purpose of this EBP project is to evaluate nursing attitudes toward suicide prevention by implementing the best practice screening tool for adolescent suicide risk assessment. …

Unknown Identities: How Transracial International Adoptees Racially And Culturally Identify In College, Amy Williamson
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This qualitative research study investigated transracial international adoptees (TRIAs) and how they racially and culturally identify in college. This study was meant to bring an awareness to student affairs professionals to increase their knowledge about a population they may encounter. Four TRIAs were interviewed. The findings from the data analysis revealed many TRIAs were uninterested in their birth country growing up, they were connected to their adoptive culture, and they racially identified with their birth race. Areas for future research and recommendations for student affairs are included.

From Caution To College: The Effects On Veterans With Self- Reported Trauma Symptoms Sharing Their Experiences With The Campus Community, Jemerson Diaz
McNair Research Journal SJSU
Over 900,000 veterans are using benefits for higher education today; the vast majority of them served in the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). Over 25% of GWOT service members that have been treated by the Veterans Affairs (VA) are reported to have symptoms of posttraumatic stress or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTS/PTSD). PTS/PTSD negatively impacts student veterans’ abilities to navigate stressful environments such as college and university settings. The Veterans Embracing Transition (VET) Connect Program at San José State University (SJSU) is designed to connect veterans with non-veterans as peer educators. Five of the 13 VET Connect peer educators (38.5%) who …
Using “Evil” To Combat “Evil”: The Regulation Of Prostitution In Renaissance Florence, Lilah F. Abrams
Using “Evil” To Combat “Evil”: The Regulation Of Prostitution In Renaissance Florence, Lilah F. Abrams
Young Historians Conference
In accordance with the general opinions towards women at the time, the establishment of the Office of Decency (known as the Onestá) in Florence, Italy during the Renaissance served to dehumanize the women participating in the profession. While many argue that the Florentine Onestá was established to preserve the city’s image, the ultimate intention of the ordinances was to use women as tools to regulate male behavior. Drawing on the remaining ordinances established by the Onestá as primary source material, this paper identifies the utilization of prostitutes to restrict the defiling of “virtuous” women by men through regulations on attire …

Effects Of Training On Suicide Assessment And Intervention, Vanessa Phillips Bosshart
Effects Of Training On Suicide Assessment And Intervention, Vanessa Phillips Bosshart
Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal
The rate of suicide is increasing in America. Healthcare professionals are an instrumental part of suicide prevention. The APNA has acknowledged that there are serious gaps in nursing education, specifically in the area of suicide risk assessment, prevention, and intervention, and there have been continued efforts to increase competencies in these areas among behavioral healthcare workers. Evidence shows that suicide specific training programs have a positive impact on healthcare professionals. Training programs such as the RRSR training program and the GSAP for nursing personnel improves nurses' confidence and abilities to assess for and intervene with suicidal patients. These programs also …
