The New Phoenix: Maine's Innovative Standards For Guardians Ad Litem, Dana E. Prescott
The New Phoenix: Maine's Innovative Standards For Guardians Ad Litem, Dana E. Prescott
Maine Law Review
In a 2014 article in the Maine Law Review, the author reviewed the historical and legal foundations for guardian ad litem (GAL) appointments by judges on behalf of children in Maine. GALs are appointed to provide the court with investigative facts and recommendations concerning the best interest of a child. The implications and frustrations expressed during political and policy discussions reflect a broader national debate deeply rooted in the power of family law courts when child custody or abuse and neglect are alleged. Whether in the form of child protection or child custody litigation, the sheer volume and complexity of …

Evaluation Of Parenting Education For High-Risk Fathers: Relationship With A Child’S Mother As An Indicator Of Paternal Involvement, Paige Forcier
Evaluation Of Parenting Education For High-Risk Fathers: Relationship With A Child’S Mother As An Indicator Of Paternal Involvement, Paige Forcier
Honors Scholar Theses
This study evaluates the implications of parenting education programs for high-risk fathers. Participants were young, underprivileged, minority, and unmarried fathers in urban Hartford. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted to identify participants’ perceptions of the program, their roles as fathers, and motivations for change. Interviews were coded using a modified version of Prochaska’s Theory of Change. Additionally, grounded theory was employed to identify major themes in the interviews regarding father involvement. A priori-like coding was used to capture the quality of relationships between the father, his co-parent, and his motivation for change. Consistent with literature, fathers that had more positive relationships …

Woman-To-Woman Rape And Sexual Assault, And Its Impact Upon The Occupation Of Work: Victim/Survivors’ Life Roles Of Worker Or Student As Disruptive And Preservative, R Twinley
School of Health Professions
BACKGROUND: Woman-to-woman rape and sexual assault globally remains largely unknown and unaddressed. Expectedly, victim/survivors often cope alone, or with limited support, in the traumatic aftermath of their sexual victimisation. Work is one occupation that is impacted upon at this time. OBJECTIVE: The study explored the perceived impacts of woman-to-woman rape and sexual assault, the subsequent experience of disclosure, reaction, and support, and the consequences for victim/survivors’ subjective experience of occupation. METHODS: The study combined a sociological auto/biographical approach with an occupational science perspective. A web-based survey generated initial data, and was also used as a sampling tool; subsequently, 10 respondents …

Retaining Volunteers In A Non-Profit, Kristina D. Ward
Retaining Volunteers In A Non-Profit, Kristina D. Ward
Senior Honors Theses
Non-profits are a vital part of today’s society. Non-profits fulfill a vital role in today’s society, providing much needed services that the government cannot or will not provide. These services include health care, education, religion, and humanitarian aid which are all imperative to any society. These organizations are unique in that they run primarily on the volunteer work of others. This type of system is very different from any other kind of organization in the world. Non-profits are powered by the motivation of people to help people. Understanding the volunteer is the key to understanding how a non-profit can thrive …
The Mechanism Of Sex Trafficking And What You Can Do About It, Benjamin J. Huebner
The Mechanism Of Sex Trafficking And What You Can Do About It, Benjamin J. Huebner
Senior Honors Theses
Awareness for sex trafficking is on a steady incline. Many organizations and events help to raise awareness for sex trafficking and often collect money to combat the issue. However, the unfortunate reality is that the public has gained a non-functional awareness of the issue. The public knows about the problem, they know that the number affected is astronomical, and they know that it is ugly, but they know of no tangible way to work toward the solution. Nothing is wrong with donating to an organization that is working to resolve the issue, but people need to be made aware of …

Immigrating To Northeast America: The Kenyan Immigrant's Experience, Jane Kabuiku
Immigrating To Northeast America: The Kenyan Immigrant's Experience, Jane Kabuiku
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Immigrants lose their unique psychosocial context when their experiences are subsumed under panethnic labels such as Hispanic, Latina/o, Asian, or African. The stress from navigating different cultural contexts becomes problematic when immigrants operate within mainstream cultural norms that are in conflict with their traditional values. The number of Kenyan immigrants to the United States has steadily increased since the 1980s. The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study was to study the lived experience of Kenyan immigrants by focusing on their integration experience and how the integration processes may have affected their mental functioning. Transition theory and social constructionism theory were …
Asset Limits For Means-Tested Public Assistance: Considerations For Child Development Account Proponents, Sondra G. Beverly, Margaret M. Clancy
Asset Limits For Means-Tested Public Assistance: Considerations For Child Development Account Proponents, Sondra G. Beverly, Margaret M. Clancy
Center for Social Development Research
If low-income families believe that having savings will jeopardize their public assistance benefits, they are unlikely to participate in Child Development Account (CDA) programs. This policy brief (1) documents the impact of CDA savings on five public assistance programs (Medicaid, CHIP, SNAP, LIHEAP, and TANF) and (2) identifies opportunities for policy change at the state level. CDA savings held in agency-owned accounts do not affect public assistance because students and families do not own the savings. Personal deposits held in individually-owned CDAs may affect assistance, but our review shows that they often do not, especially when held in 529 college …
An Organisational Study Into The Impact Of Mobile Devices On Clinician And Patient Experience In Auckland, New Zealand, Kelly L. Bohot, Rebecca C. Hammond, Teresa A. Stanbrook
An Organisational Study Into The Impact Of Mobile Devices On Clinician And Patient Experience In Auckland, New Zealand, Kelly L. Bohot, Rebecca C. Hammond, Teresa A. Stanbrook
Patient Experience Journal
Mobile technology has potential to improve workflow, patient safety and quality of care, and has been identified as an important enabler of community services. However, little is known about the impact of mobile device use on clinician and patient experiences. Eleven community allied health clinicians were provided with live access to electronic health records, their email and electronic calendar, peer reviewed education and therapy mobile applications via a mobile device. Three data measures were collected over 19-weeks. First, quantitative time and motion data was gathered at baseline and follow-up to enable longitudinal analysis of clinician workflow. Second, a questionnaire consisting …

Male Sexual Victimization: Victim Response, Reporting Barriers, And Treatment, Jordan Leith
Male Sexual Victimization: Victim Response, Reporting Barriers, And Treatment, Jordan Leith
Honors Capstones
This thesis provides an overview of the research on victim response, reporting barriers, and treatment in the area of male sexual victimization. Male sexual victimization is an area of study that is roughly 20 years behind the research conducted on sexually victimized females. This thesis advocates for increased research in the area of male sexual victimization to further understand barriers that prevent males from reporting sexual victimization. Existing research on sexually victimized males shows both response similarities and differences to female victims.
