There are millions of street-connected children worldwide, with thousands estimated in Kenya. Many child-serving organizations - including Agape Children’s Ministry (Agape) in western Kenya - provide rehabilitation and family reintegration services to remove children from the streets and reunite them with their families. This study aims to elucidate barriers and facilitators of Agape’s Family Strengthening Program (FSP) and elicit feedback. Twelve children and 12 caregivers who participated in the FSP, as well as 11 Agape staff, participated in semi-structured, in-depth interviews for this study. Salient child/caregiver themes include: (1) spirituality/religion, (2) reflections on the FSP, (3) reflections on Agape, and …

Scholars and advocates are at odds about how to achieve higher levels of child safety and permanency. Calls for change include the recent upEND focus on eradication of child welfare services to a radical refocusing of the present system towards prevention/early intervention. To clarify the implications of reform over abolition, we seek to portray a future in which the abolition of child welfare has occurred, in juxtaposition to maintaining four core elements of established child maltreatment programmes around the world: (1) receiving and responding to community signals about the risk to children; (2) assessment of need coupled with a proportionate …

Workplace Implications For Female Leaders: Exploration Of Stereotype Threat Within Video Conferencing., Roisin Donnelly, Anthony Ryan
Workplace Implications For Female Leaders: Exploration Of Stereotype Threat Within Video Conferencing., Roisin Donnelly, Anthony Ryan
Journal Articles
A significant body of research has documented the effect to which stereotype threat can be triggered by both the physical environment and by the use of various technology media. However, there is a dearth of research exploring the relationship between stereotype threat, defined here as “the concrete, real-time threat of being judged and treated poorly in settings where a negative stereotype about one’s group applies” (Steele, Spencer & Aronson, 2002, p.385), and video conferencing software features - specifically virtual backgrounds. This literature review suggested that this feature might, in certain circumstances, negatively affect the performance of groups not stereotypically associated …
A Qualitative Study Of In-School Support For Lgbtq+ Students, Sara Barry
A Qualitative Study Of In-School Support For Lgbtq+ Students, Sara Barry
Undergraduate Review
Research suggests that LGBTQ+ students experience higher rates of bullying and harassment due to their gender identity in school. Therefore, the need for schools to create a positive school climate and provide interventions for these students is imperative. This study aimed to understand the effectiveness of these interventions from the perspective of adjustment counselors. This study followed Moustakas's methods of transcendental phenomenology and used semi-structured interviews to collect data. The sample consisted of seven adjustment counselors interviewed on their usage and perceived effectiveness of in-school supportive interventions for LGBTQ+ students. Five themes surfaced: an open and accepting climate, policies, professional …

The Impact Of Community-Based Programs And Restorative Justice On Reducing Black Youth Involvement In The Juvenile Justice System, Carla Victoria Alves
Undergraduate Review
What are the contributing factors that lead Black youth into the juvenile justice system? This inquiry aims to delve into the experiences of Black males categorized as juvenile delinquents. With arrest and conviction rates significantly higher among Black youth compared to their White counterparts, it is crucial to assess whether their experiences are comparable and to identify the underlying reasons for these racial disparities. The researcher is tasked with uncovering evidence-based practices to address and rectify these racial inequities within the juvenile justice system in the United States. This paper concentrates on adolescents aged 13 to 19, specifically Black youth, …
Left Out: Chronic Absenteeism In Elementary Schools, Catarina Morrissette
Left Out: Chronic Absenteeism In Elementary Schools, Catarina Morrissette
Undergraduate Review
In Massachusetts in 2022, approximately 33,000 students were chronically absent (missing ten percent of the 180- day school year) students (Buyinza, 2022). The purpose of this research project was to learn what strategies and programs work to support elementary students who are chronically absent, and why students are missing school. Chronic absenteeism impacts all academics but particularly reading levels; social skills and future career opportunities are also negatively impacted (DESE, 2022). Having resources to support educators and their students during these trying times is important for the success of a child’s educational future. As part of this project, teachers, administrators, …

Integrating Clinical Intuition For A Whole Person Approach To Empowerment, Jennifer Sousa
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This paper is a summary of a study utilizing constructivist grounded theory to examine the process of accessing and applying clinical intuition in psychotherapy. Intensive interviews were conducted with 19 psychotherapists to explore their experiences with clinical intuition, including training on the topic, supportive conditions for accessing intuition, and decision making around its application in session. Engagement in an iterative process of data collection and analysis occurred to arrive at the constructed theory: integrating clinical intuition for a whole person approach to empowerment. The theory is comprised of the core categories (a) building trust and confidence to access and use …

Transpersonal Approaches To Clinical Supervision, Harris L. Friedman
Transpersonal Approaches To Clinical Supervision, Harris L. Friedman
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Transpersonal psychology can provide unique approaches to clinical supervision by offering an interconnected self-expansive view of the self across time and space, as well as can provide a secular avenue to consider the importance of spirituality without relying on supernatural assumptions. Transpersonal supervisors can challenge conventional notions about what and how supervisees know, and even the nature of being a knower, through providing a more inclusive, perhaps even holistic, vantage that is both critical of mainstream approaches and surpasses their ability to provide a coherent “super” (i.e., going beyond the usual more-myopic understandings) vision. Background on transpersonal psychology related to …

Child Care Advocacy: Tennessee House Bill 1669, Madelyn Kearns, Julio Rodriguez, Destiny Welch, Dillan Williams
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
House Bill 1669 aims to require day child facilities to alert parents or guardians of
enrolled children sixty days prior to the permanent closure of the facility. The main purpose of this bill is to protect hard working parents in Tennessee from being
blindsided by their childcare service by giving them the right to know 60 days in advance before permanent closure of the childcare agency their child or children are currently enrolled in or are currently on the waitlist for (Tennessee General assembly, 2024). This is an important issue because
72 percent of working parents said they cannot afford …

Hb 1844- Free Breakfast And Lunch Programs In Tennessee, Cora Sm Williams, Bailee M. Walker, Lynn D. Fawcett
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
In 2022, more than 13 million children went to school hungry in the United States. According to the USDA, 1 in 5 children do not know where their next meal is coming from (Child Hunger in America, n.d.). In Tennessee, this number is 1 in 4 (Hance, 2020). Far too many students come from households where they may not have access to regular, nutritious meals. Hunger can significantly impact a child's ability to learn and thrive in school. By providing free breakfast and lunch, schools can ensure that students have access to essential nutrition, which can improve their academic performance …

The following article presents a historical and anthropological analysis of the political context experienced in Puerto Rico during the 1960s and 1970s, within the Cold War and the Vietnam War period. Since 1898, Puerto Rico has been a US territory and since 1952, a Commonwealth. During the Cold War and Vietnam War era, Puerto Rico suffered the worst political tension experienced among the supporters of independence against the government of Puerto Rico and the United States. This article analyzes the impact of the most important events during this period such as the mandatory recruitment program of the US Army, the …

Discharge Implementation Project: Ascertaining If Discharge Implementation Orders Overall Improves Discharge Metrics At A Texas Hospital, Zachary Paras, Omar Nawab, Komthorn Cunvong, Jackson V. Littlejohn, Sathish Karmegam
North Texas GME Research Forum 2024
There are several factors preventing discharges out of the hospital within 24 hours that ultimately affects metrics for both hospital systems and physicians. These factors include pending labs, imaging, or procedures; pending placement approval at a facility outside of the hospital upon discharge; notification of family and caretakers; secured funding for devices and medicines; and others. In an attempt to mitigate preventable extra days spent in the hospital once a patient is medically ready for discharge, a Texas hospital implemented a discharge order set for providers to utilize that informs all involved parties including case management, PT/OT, social work, nurses, …

Reimagining Equitable Care: Simulation-Based Education And The Dismantling Of Implicit Bias And Stigma Of Vulnerable Populations In Hospitals, Vanessa Smith
Nursing | Senior Theses
Background: Simulation-based education consists of using high-fidelity mannequins and equipment to provide a safe space for healthcare professionals to practice crucial skills within healthcare. Used within hospitals and schools, simulation most commonly surrounds practicing hands-on skills such as central line insertion, IV insertion, Ultrasound-guided procedures, code blue response, etc. However, a large portion of healthcare that is overlooked is tackling issues within patient-provider relationships. Simulation can help dismantle the negative behaviors and feelings providers push onto patients through the use of standardized patients and role-playing. By using these methods, simulation can reduce providers’ personal implicit biases and the stigma associated …

How Do Babies Come To Know What Babies Know?, David S. Moore, David J. Lewkowicz
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
Elizabeth Spelke’s What Babies Know is a scholarly presentation of core knowledge theory and a masterful compendium of empirical evidence that supports it. Unfortunately, Spelke’s principal theoretical assumption is that core knowledge is simply the innate product of cognitive evolution. As such, her theory fails to explicate the developmental mechanisms underlying the emergence of the cognitive systems underlying that knowledge.

Community Impact: Murals & Public Art, Annie Dong
Theses & ETDs
This thesis project integrates social practice and multiculturalism theory with public art murals and involves producing art in both gallery spaces and public spaces resulting in two large mural installations that examine the benefits that public art and social activism have on communities, drawing inspiration from artists including Judy Baca and Michelle Angela Ortiz. Through this work, I examine both the role of public murals as a catalyst for community building as well as the impact of adolescent participation in the creation of community murals on their well-being using the Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction Theory (BPNS). As part of the …
