Strategies For Integrating Aging And Older Adulthood Into Counselor Training, Matthew C. Fullen, Jordan Westcott, Kailey Bradley, Natese R. Dockery, Jungeun Lee, Rumbidzai Mushunje, Afroze N. Shaikh

Adultspan Journal

Following recent changes to Medicare mental health law, counselors will have expanded opportunities to work with older adults. Historically, there has been a dearth of counselor training dedicated to counseling older adults, necessitating greater attention to understanding and applying best practices for preparing counselors to serve older adult clients. Looking to professions that have a longer history of serving older adults, specifically gerontology, social work, and geropsychology, we describe approaches to training counselors to work with older adults that may prove helpful for the counseling profession.

The Efficacy Of Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy: A Literature Review, Erica Thiem

Counselor Education Capstones

Equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) is a growing form of psychotherapy that has yet to establish a solid research base. The present literature review sought to determine for which adult population(s), if any, this method is the most recommended. This author completed a literature review that involved reading twenty-one studies on a variety of adult populations. Studies were found about veterans and/or people diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder, patients with substance use disorders, survivors of interpersonal violence, psychiatric patients, college students, older adults, women with eating disorders and more. Zero incidences of harm were found by using EAP. However, the literature was …

The Role Of Intuitive Reasoning In Lawyering And Legal Education, N. E. Millar Jan 2024

The Role Of Intuitive Reasoning In Lawyering And Legal Education, N. E. Millar

St. Thomas Law Review

Intuition-a process of "rapid cognition" that offers foresight and helps with creative problem-solving-is a powerful tool that lawyers can use to inform strategic decisions, avoid ethical pitfalls, enhance communication, and increase career satisfaction. However, many law students come to law school after decades of being taught to trust only external sources-such as data and authority figures-and out of touch with their internal, intuitive resources. Law schools exacerbate this disconnect by prioritizing grades, awards, rankings, prestigious jobs, and other external sources of satisfaction and meaning. Indeed, the study of law is primarily the study of external sources of guidance, such as …

Social Work Faculty Publications

Background: Approximately 16.5% of U.S. young adults have a cannabis use disorder (CUD) and are at risk for negative outcomes. Treatment can reduce cannabis use, but young adults are less likely to seek help than older adults. Peer Network Counseling-txt (PNC-txt) is a brief, text-delivered, Motivational Interviewing-informed substance use intervention focusing on peer relations and activity spaces as mechanisms for behavioral change. PNC-txt has shown evidence of reducing tobacco and cannabis use with adolescents and young adults, but it has not been tested in the context of legal cannabis use. The current randomized controlled trial sought to expand the evidence …

The Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences On Child Development And Communication: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Tyler Johnson

Undergraduate Research Posters 2024

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can be defined as possible early childhood traumatic and stressful events that could result from a variety of sources including abuse, neglect, toxic stress, or household dysfunction. The original ACE study described ten ACEs. In the United States, 34.8 million children are estimated to have been exposed to more than one adverse childhood experience. ACEs have been studied by several healthcare professionals. However, there is very little work investigating ACEs in the Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD; Speech and Hearing) literature. This study sought to explore the impact of ACEs on communication development, and behavior, and …

Reflexivity Of The Lived Research Experiences Of A Doctoral Student Through Communities Of Practice, Shui Kau Chiu Jan 2024

Reflexivity Of The Lived Research Experiences Of A Doctoral Student Through Communities Of Practice, Shui Kau Chiu

School of General Education & Languages (THEi)

Doctoral students and apprentices are much alike. Doctoral students are treated as junior academic scholars. They must follow and learn different knowledge and research skills from their senior academic scholars, mainly supervisors and other congenial faculty members within the department. During the process, reflectivity is one of their vital self-fulfilment tools to elucidate, contemplate, ruminate, and then internalize all the given prescriptions. By adopting communities of practice as a theoretical framework, this article has employed an auto-ethnographical approach aimed at reflecting the author’s lived research experiences as a doctoral student in Hong Kong. By revealing the journeys of accommodating reflexivity, …

Student Attitude About School Resource Officers, Olivia Dunn Jan 2024

Student Attitude About School Resource Officers, Olivia Dunn

Undergraduate Review

Maintaining safety is a goal that has remained steady in the United States education system's history (Kober, 2020). Throughout changes in society, such as the increase of drug and alcohol crimes, school shootings, and the COVID-19 pandemic, the safety of youth has become a main priority and changes to the education system have adapted to such changes to ensure safety. The topic of student perception on school safety and the role of school security measures is also important. While students are directly impacted by security measures put into place, they are the best source of data to receive feedback about …

Examining Psychology Majors: Perceptions, Motivations, & Goals, Madison Wetherell Jan 2024

Examining Psychology Majors: Perceptions, Motivations, & Goals, Madison Wetherell

Undergraduate Review

While psychology is one of the United States’ most popular undergraduate majors, we face a shortage of mental health workers which has created a lack of access to quality care. A gap exists between students’ interest in psychology as an academic subject and their interest in mental health careers. Using quantitative survey data from psychology majors in a required orientational course, this study assessed why students major in psychology, their feelings about the psychology major, and their post-graduate plans. Many psychology majors reported wanting to help others, which was associated with wanting a psychology-related career. Students of color reported a …

An Investigation Into Academic Clustering Among Division Ii Student Athletes, Michael Monahan, Amit Shah Jan 2024

An Investigation Into Academic Clustering Among Division Ii Student Athletes, Michael Monahan, Amit Shah

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

Academic clustering occurs when at least 25% of the student athletes on any given team have the same academic major. In and of itself, academic clustering is neither good nor bad, however there is the temptation for students to gravitate toward a major which is perceived to be easier, to seek to associate only with team members, or to enlist in majors which do not align with their career ambitions. Is it for flexibility and scheduling to choose an academic major to have the least impact on their sport? This study examined the athletic program at a Division II four-year …

This report uses criminal justice metrics (e.g., arrests and drug court participation) and treatment resource information (e.g., number of individuals served through M110 monies) to better understand how individuals are connecting with services in Oregon, and the role that the criminal justice system can play as one component of a larger network.
