Through The Eyes Of A Guard: Watson Kirkconnell And Great War Internment In Canada, Daniel R. Meister Jun 2025

Through The Eyes Of A Guard: Watson Kirkconnell And Great War Internment In Canada, Daniel R. Meister

Canadian Military History

Histories of internment in Canada have paid much attention to internees’ experiences but far less to those of the guards. Correcting this trend, this article offers a detailed case study of one soldier, Watson Kirkconnell, who worked at the Fort Henry and Kapuskasing internment camps. Drawing on his valuable but heretofore unutilised archive of material, this article provides a vivid social history of the camps through Kirkconnell’s eyes. Nuancing the historiography of wartime internment, this article demonstrates how commandants determined the experiences of both internees and guards alike and, at the same time, that staff could sometimes mitigate their superior’s …

“Your Lads […] Looked Much Like The Reappearance Of Jesus Christ To Us”: Canada, The Iccs And The Release Of Us Prisoners Of War In Vietnam, Jean-Michel Turcotte Jun 2025

“Your Lads […] Looked Much Like The Reappearance Of Jesus Christ To Us”: Canada, The Iccs And The Release Of Us Prisoners Of War In Vietnam, Jean-Michel Turcotte

Canadian Military History

Abstract : Between January and July 1973, 240 Canadian military personnel took part in the International Commission for Control and Supervision (ICCS), responsible for monitoring the Paris Peace Agreements ending the American war in Vietnam. Canadian military observers notably supervised the release of 595 Americans prisoners of war (POWs) as well as over 32,000 Vietnamese captives. This article suggests that the ICCS, often viewed in the historiography as ineffective because of the numerous violations of the agreements, was much more successful in terms of monitoring US POW releases. In addition, it argues that helping the ally was a priority for …

Journal of Maine Medical Center

Introduction: Although there is extensive evidence supporting harm reduction strategies for managing substance use disorders, wide implementation in clinical settings has been limited. In this study, we examined clinicians’ harm reduction experiences and comfort with providing harm reduction resources.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we distributed surveys electronically to clinicians employed in our institution’s outpatient and inpatient settings. We measured comfort using a 10-point scale and practices by asking participants if they had prescribed or provided specific harm reduction resources. We measured perceived importance of various factors in providing harm reduction resources using a 5-point Likert scale.

Temple Of Terry: A Prime-Symbolic Knowledge Engine With Mermaid-To-Python Quantum Compiler, Fulton D. Bridwell, Fulton D. Bridwell

Defensive Publications Series

This invention presents a novel symbolic-intelligence system that combines prime-number-based concept compression, visual logic diagrams, and automated code synthesis into a single architecture. Each concept is assigned a prime identifier, and multi-dimensional ideas are expressed as factorizable composites (e.g., 613 = consciousness × genome × human-scale). This system is powered by a symbolic compiler that reads Mermaid-style visual flowcharts and generates optimized Python code through a multi-stage transformation process.

Key symbolic operators (Ξ, ∇, Φ, Ψ, etc.) represent universal principles such as consciousness, learning, structure, and energy. The engine runs this code in a quantum-style runtime that simulates parallel logic …

nfluenza A viruses (IAVs) can infect birds and various mammals. In this study, we retrospectively isolated and characterized IAVs (n=8) from oropharyngeal and cloacal swab samples of free-grazing ducks collected during December 2018 to December 2021, by using egg inoculation and whole-genome sequencing. The IAVs could be subtyped as IAV-H4N2 (n = 3) and IAV-H4N8 (n = 5) using real-time RT-PCR assays. Genetic and phylogenetic analyses revealed that all eight genes of Thai IAV-H4 belong to the Avian Eurasian lineage. Both Thai IAV-H4N2 and IAV-H4N8 exhibited low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) characteristics and were susceptible to oseltamivir and amantadine. This …

Leadership Faculty Publications

Planning is a ubiquitous dimension of service-learning and community engagement (SLCE) partnership practice. How SLCE administrators conceptualize, inhabit, and negotiate their roles as planners remains empirically under-investigated, however, as does when and why planners experience shifts in perspective that affect partnership quality and outcomes. We introduce the concept of planning orientations and report on a study in which SLCE administrators reflected on their desired and practiced planning orientations as they planned and implemented a partnership reflection process. Key findings illustrate the utility of intentional reflection on planning orientations for examining and enhancing community-academic partnership practice, including the recognition that the …

Unraveling The Relationship Between Sexual Shame And Father-Child Sex Communication, Hannah Mireya Brundage Jun 2025

Unraveling The Relationship Between Sexual Shame And Father-Child Sex Communication, Hannah Mireya Brundage

Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to understand the relationship between father’s sexual shame and children’s sexual shame. Parents play a role in shaping their children’s behaviors and perceptions in regard to sexuality. Most of this research analyzed data from the viewpoint of the mother, missing the potentially unique perspective and influence of fathers. Using longitudinal survey data from 361 fathers-adolescent dyads, I proposed to study the relations between father sexual shame and child sexual shame, and the possible mediating role of father-child sex communication. I predicted that quality of sex communication, including controlling and open communication, would mediate father sexual shame and …

Enhancing Fault Tolerance In Tmr Soft Risc-V Fpga Socs Through Failure-Driven Mitigation Strategies, Andrew Elbert Wilson Jun 2025

Enhancing Fault Tolerance In Tmr Soft Risc-V Fpga Socs Through Failure-Driven Mitigation Strategies, Andrew Elbert Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) leveraging soft processors, particularly those implementing the open-standard RISC-V Instruction Set Architecture (ISA), are increasingly important for space missions due to their adaptability and reconfigurability. However, their susceptibility to radiation-induced Single Event Upsets (SEUs) presents significant reliability challenges, necessitating robust fault-tolerant strategies such as Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR). This dissertation evaluates the effectiveness of TMR-based mitigation techniques for Linux-capable soft RISC-V System-on-Chip (SoC) implementations deployed on SRAM-based FPGAs operating in high-radiation environments. Using a combination of deterministic fault injection and neutron radiation testing, this work identifies critical residual single-point failure modes that persist in TMR-protected designs. …

The Perfect Pairing: Early Stand Dynamics In Conventional Aspen And Mixedwood Forests In Northern Minnesota, Usa, Chelsea C. Semper, John M. Zobel, Sawyer S. Scherer, Michael R. Reinikainen, Matthew B. Russell, Tyler S. Gifford, Marcella A. Windmuller‑Campione

Aspen Bibliography

In North America, mixedwood management is being increasingly considered by natural resource managers as an alternative to single species management for a variety of ecological, economic, and cultural reasons. In northern Minnesota, USA, natural resource managers are increasingly using treatments to establish mixedwood forests in aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx, Populus grandientata Michx) dominated ecosystems by planting white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench). However, little quantitative information is known regarding differences between stand structure and composition in conventional aspen and aspen-white spruce during early stand development. To provide greater clarity for managers, we sampled 40 aspen stands across a chronosequence …

Development Of A Near Terahertz Backward Wave Oscillator Using Standard Waveguide, Alexander Glick Jun 2025

Development Of A Near Terahertz Backward Wave Oscillator Using Standard Waveguide, Alexander Glick

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

There is a demand for terahertz (THz) frequency radiation sources. Applications include, but are not limited to, imaging for medical and security purposes, biochemical and organic spectroscopy, and velocimetry. Historically, there was a limited supply of THz devices due to technological limitations. In recent years much progress has been made to reduce this “gap” in supply and demand for THz sources. This work proposes a vacuum electronic device that produces high power, extremely high frequency radiation in the G-band, by utilizing a backward wave oscillator (BWO) based on WR3 standard waveguide. This device is compact, fundamentally simple, and has great …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Anastomotic leaks after colorectal resection are serious surgical complications. We have compared the integrity of two common colorectal anastomosis techniques, end-to-side (ES) and end-to-end (EE), to control specimens using a novel experimental setup that mimics anastomotic air leak tests, which are typically performed during surgeries. Freshly harvested porcine colonic sections from 23 F1 cross-species pigs were used. Pressure measurements and video imaging were used to monitor the ex vivo experiments on EE, ES, and Control specimens. Using EE (n = 16), ES (n = 12), and Control (n = 22) specimens, leak pressure was 282.6 ± 3.0 mm Hg for …
