Learning is a lifelong process exercised within and beyond the classroom and a vital skill in almost all technical professions. Engineers, in particular, are impacted by rapidly evolving technologies and practices that require continuous learning and adaptation long after their training and the initial transition into their professional careers. However, despite the critical role of learning in their academic success and profession, engineering students experience academically rigorous and challenging courses with very little emphasis or conscious focus on learning strategies that power effective learning. Often-used learning strategies such as rereading, highlighting, repetition, and memorization are intuitive for many students, yet …
Towards A Critical Legal Tech Education: A Decolonial Approach, Diego H. Alcalá Laboy
Towards A Critical Legal Tech Education: A Decolonial Approach, Diego H. Alcalá Laboy
Seattle University Law Review Online
The intersection of law, technology, and decolonial theory offers a critical framework for exposing and challenging power asymmetries embedded in both legal and technological systems. Drawing from his experience as a criminal defense attorney and legal academic, Diego H. Alcalá Laboy critiques how surveillance technologies, often framed as tools for justice, disproportionately harm marginalized communities. Grounded in Latin American decolonial theory, particularly the modernity/coloniality/decoloniality triad and the concept of pluriversality, he argues for reimagining legal scholarship and pedagogy to disrupt Eurocentric and universalist assumptions. Using a colonizer/colonized framework, he advocates for bottom-up knowledge creation that centers the voices of those …

Cancer is rapidly on the rise as a cause of morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, despite the increasing importance of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) as a pillar of cancer therapy, access in these settings lags well behind that in high-income countries (HICs). Increasing the evaluation of ICIs through local clinical trials and demonstration projects, and inclusion in multinational clinical trials is the first step to improving access. In particular, the epidemiology and clinical presentation of cancer in LMICs is often distinct from that in HICs, and the impact of immune checkpoint blockade in these settings …

Philosophy, despite its proclivities towards history and contextualization, often neglects to properly note various characteristics of ideas. In particular, there seems to be a kind of blindness to a key component of how ideas come into being: namely, the role of writing that leads to the preservation and transmission of ideas. Textbooks, for instance, are a key instrument for containing, disseminating, and archiving knowledge of a specific domain that can be used to introduce those complex concepts to newcomers and the unspecialized. As such, a textbook is an epistemic device used for transmitting a condensed constellation of ideas, concepts, formulas, …

BACKGROUND: Dysferlin (DYSF) has a crucial role in sarcolemmal repair. While DYSF mutations commonly manifest as limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMDR2) or distal Miyoshi myopathy, atypical manifestations, such as asymptomatic hyperCKemia and pseudometabolic myopathy, are rarely reported. We describe clinical, serologic, radiologic, genetic, and muscle pathology findings of three patients with rare dysferlinopathy phenotypes and long-term follow up in one of them. We also review the literature pertinent to uncommon forms of dysferlinopathy presenting with hyperCKemia and pseudometabolic phenotype.
RESULTS: Patient 1 is a 51-year-old female with exercise-induced myalgia predominantly affecting calf muscles for 7 years. She had a 22-year history …
The Impact Of The Chevron Ruling On Medicare, Sana Sherali
The Impact Of The Chevron Ruling On Medicare, Sana Sherali
DePaul Journal of Health Care Law
The Supreme Court’s historic decision to overturn the Chevron doctrine in June 2024 received national attention due to its implications for how much power agencies will hold in the years to come. The Chevron doctrine originally comes from the Supreme Court’s 1984 decision in Chevron, U.S.A., Inc. v. Natural Resources Defense Council.Chevron addressed the requirements imposed on states by The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1977. This decision set the precedent that if federal legislation is unclear or leaves an administrative gap, courts have to follow the regulatory agency’s interpretation of the law, as long as the interpretation is …

The Opioid Crisis: How The United States And Countries Abroad Are Making Strides, Maura Mcginnity
DePaul Journal of Health Care Law
The opioid epidemic has been an ongoing problem in the United States since the 1980s. The United States has had a very negative attitude towards individuals suffering from addiction. This attitude is clearly shown through the United States’ handling of the opioid crisis. Hundreds of thousands of individuals have died due to opioids. In the forty years since this epidemic became prevalent, the United States has still failed to implement a country-wide solution to combat the crisis. Certain states, like New York and Illinois, have made strides toward helping individuals suffering from opioid use disorder, but nationally, the country is …

The Critical Definitions For Measuring Homelessness: Implication For Homeless Policy Formulation From Developed Countries To Thailand, Surasak Wongsa
The Critical Definitions For Measuring Homelessness: Implication For Homeless Policy Formulation From Developed Countries To Thailand, Surasak Wongsa
Journal of Demography
Homelessness phenomenon is facing in countries. In the past, the definition of homelessness was based on a materialistic mindset or the principle of objectivity, which viewed problems as tangible and visible objects. Looking at social problems based on objectivity leads to a definition of homelessness that includes only those who are sleeping on the streets and people living in government shelters by identifying the causal factors of homelessness at the individual level, especially mental illness, crime, and drug use. Defining homelessness objectively also involves counting methods that measure the characteristics of homelessness using street counts from the locations where homeless …

Chemistry Faculty Publications
A thermal desorption-pyrolysis gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (TD-Pyr-GC-MS) method was developed that enables a comprehensive analysis of preservatives as well as native wood constituents in treated wood. The developed method is based on thermal desorption, i.e., extraction of wood preservatives, followed by pyrolysis to investigate changes in the occurrence of characteristic wood building blocks (e.g., guaiacol derivatives). We implemented combined MS data acquisition (i.e., SITI) consisting of selected ion monitoring (SIM) and total ion current (TIC) and allowing for low limits of detection of preservatives in SIM mode and TIC detection of any evolving species. The matrix detection …

Peer Mentor Training Program: A Policy Proposal, Laura Paul
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Peer mentoring is an evidence-based strategy to improve student retention. However, for this approach to be sustainable, the students providing mentoring must be intentionally prepared for this role. This project introduces an evidence-based policy for training Bachelor of Science (BSN) students as peer mentors to enhance student outcomes and retention of first-year students. This policy was created for a small BSN program at a work-study college with a financially disadvantaged student body, which places the students at increased risk of not persisting in their degree. The training policy is intended to be implemented with nursing lab staff who are students …

METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System was queried to identify facial fractures from 2014 to 2023 as well as associated demographic data. …
Egyptian Public Economic Policies Between The Supreme Constitutional Court And The State, Dina Sherif Abdelrahman
Egyptian Public Economic Policies Between The Supreme Constitutional Court And The State, Dina Sherif Abdelrahman
Theses and Dissertations
To fully understand the present, it is useful to trace the past. The relationship between the rule of law and economic development has been a significant topic in the literature. In the 1960s, it was believed that economic development required regulated markets in which the state played an active role. However, when it became evident that the state's involvement in the economy yielded few of the promised benefits, economic neoliberalism emerged. This involved the state withdrawing from the economy and allowing the market to take the lead. Still, the state must govern the institutional conditions necessary for the markets. These …

Potential Effect Of Statins As Adjuvant Anti‑Tuberculosis Agents: A Short Communication, Mehwish Hanif, Ayesha Tariq, Laiba Zahoor
Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine
Tuberculosis is a chronic pulmonary infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and can affect other parts of the body such as bones, brain, and lymph nodes (extra pulmonary Tb). Statins, primarily used for hyperlipidemia, have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties that may help prevent and manage TB. They inhibit HMG-CoA reductase, reduce cholesterol synthesis and interfere with phagocytosis crucial for TB infection. Given the rise in resistance to first-line anti-tubercular therapies, Statins have shown promise as adjunctive agents by potentially shortening treatment duration, reducing adverse effects, and improving outcomes, particularly in immunocompromised and diabetic patients. Based on these findings, Statins …

Communication Faculty Articles and Research
During the 2020 worldwide lockdowns due to COVID-19, qualitative researchers were restricted to online communication (e.g., Zoom) to gather qualitative interview data. Since that time, qualitative researchers have increasingly transitioned from conducting interviews primarily in person to conducting interviews using online communication technologies such as Zoom, but little is known about how interview approaches may impact the interview experience or data quality. This study explores differences between face-to-face (FTF) and online (Zoom) interviewing approaches, data quality, and interviewee perceptions of rapport, empathy, and conversational involvement. Participants were assigned to an interview condition (FTF or Zoom) and randomly assigned to one …

Involving patient advocates as partners in cancer research improves research and provides favorable experiences for both the researcher and the advocate. Previous work demonstrates challenges to establishing relationships between researchers and advocates, including uncertainty about why the relationships are necessary, how to establish them, what to say, and how they should be structured. To overcome these challenges, we established the Metastatic Breast Cancer Research Conference (MBCRC) Advocate Researcher Program (MARP) at the MBCRC in 2023. We outline the approach to the program to serve as a model for others interested in performing similar activities and report findings from surveys to …

A Modern Approach To Classifying Medieval Latin Scripts, Robert L. Lane Jr, Rafia Mirza, Robert Slater
A Modern Approach To Classifying Medieval Latin Scripts, Robert L. Lane Jr, Rafia Mirza, Robert Slater
SMU Data Science Review
Paleography, the study of historical handwriting, is essential for preserving societal understanding of cultural, social, and legal frameworks from the past. Medieval manuscripts, often exhibiting refined craftsmanship, present unique challenges to modern readers due to differences in handwriting conventions and the absence of standardized punctuation and spaces. These texts hold valuable insights into the evolution of written communication, literacy, and language development. However, interpreting them requires specialized knowledge and technological solutions. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) can be leveraged to classify scripts, an important step in Historical Document analysis. These models extract and analyze hierarchical features from images, addressing inconsistencies in …

SMU Data Science Review
Large Language Models (LLMs) are transforming conversational AI, yet their dependence on prompt-supplied context exposes them to context-switch attacks that covertly steer dialogue toward sensitive or malicious ends. A 70 one-sided conversation transcript evaluation set was constructed spanning various fraudulent scenarios. Each transcript embeds adversarial patterns drawn while preserving natural conversational flow. We introduce a hybrid defense that pairs a BERT-based semantic-drift detector (cosine-similarity threshold = 0.70) with a curated keyword and hack-phrase scanner to counter these threats. In aggregate, the system delivered 100 % recall, intercepting every simulated phishing or data-harvesting attempt. The keyword layer achieved perfect precision, generating …

Abstract. Social Media platforms serve as central hubs for global discourse, where political dialogue is widely shared and echoed. This exchange shapes civic participation and influences electoral outcomes, often with both intended and unintended consequences. In its inception, social media platforms served as message boards for the masses, yet manipulation and exploiting of systems via bot usage has made platforms susceptible to outside forces.
