Examining The Spatial Inequities Of Urban Heat Islands And Tree Canopy In Conway, Sc, Patrick W. Da Silva
Examining The Spatial Inequities Of Urban Heat Islands And Tree Canopy In Conway, Sc, Patrick W. Da Silva
Honors Theses
This study examines spatial inequities in urban heat island (UHI) effects and urban tree canopy (UTC) distribution in Conway, South Carolina, through an interdisciplinary environmental justice framework. Integrating qualitative field observations, quantitative temperature measurements, and geospatial analysis using GIS and remote sensing techniques, the research evaluates how land surface characteristics and vegetation influence localized temperature variation across eight representative sites, including residential neighborhoods and downtown streetscapes. Results demonstrate a consistent relationship between reduced tree canopy cover, increased land surface temperatures, and elevated ambient temperatures. Areas with limited vegetation—particularly lower-income public housing communities—experienced the highest thermal burdens, while locations with established …

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is common in infants and young children, and thediagnosis and characterization of the disease continues to evolve in recent times. The typicalsymptoms thought to be related to GERD in young children are often nonspecific andubiquitous, underscoring the need for diagnostic testing in patients who have severe symptomsor complications related to GERD. Combined multichannel intraluminal impedance and pHtesting (MII-pH) is a diagnostic tool that can be used to study the frequency andseverity of gastroesophageal reflux. Compared to other diagnostic devices, MII-pH hasthe advantage of detecting both acidic and alkaline reflux events, as well as allows the study …

Investigation Of Its-Cvo Technologies, Mallory Brown, Andrew Martin, Valerie Keathley-Helil, Jennifer Walton
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Staff shortages and reduced budgets have made transportation agencies increasingly reliant on intelligent transportation systems (ITS) for commercial motor (CMV) vehicle enforcement activities. Technologies such as license plate readers, US Department of Transportation (USDOT) number readers, weigh-in-motion scales, static scales, and preclearance systems like PrePass and Drivewyze help automate enforcement and free up personnel to focus on inspecting those vehicles most likely to pose compliance and/or safety risks. To document adoption rates of different technologies, researchers surveyed transportation agencies, vendors, and law enforcement agencies. Surveys responses provided useful insights into how jurisdictions are approaching the use of advanced technologies to …
Analyzing Attitudes On Social Welfare: Partisanship Versus Self-Interest, Jack D. Ryder
Analyzing Attitudes On Social Welfare: Partisanship Versus Self-Interest, Jack D. Ryder
Student Publications
What influences Americans' attitudes on social welfare? Why do some Americans vote seemingly against their interests? Using data from the 2020 National Election Survey, this paper will test hypotheses examining how rurality and Republican partisanship are associated with lower favorability toward social welfare spending. This paper will also analyze the current literature on immigration, locality, and partisanship to see how they shape attitudes toward welfare spending. Overall, the regression models show that Republican partisanship is more correlated with support for social welfare cuts than an individual’s rurality. This study is important for understanding how partisanship shapes attitudes on policy and …
Echoes Of The Goddess: Reclaiming Power-Within In The Modern Workplace, Chloe E. Hanousek
Echoes Of The Goddess: Reclaiming Power-Within In The Modern Workplace, Chloe E. Hanousek
Student Publications
This work examines gender inequality in the American workforce as part of a broader cultural system that consistently devalues care, embodiment, and relational labor. Rather than treating issues such as the wage gap or the motherhood penalty as isolated problems, it situates them within a historical pattern shaped by patriarchal power, medical dismissal, and the domination of nature. Through an interdisciplinary feminist approach, this work traces how the suppression of the feminine influences women’s working lives, health experiences, and relationships to their bodies. By connecting labor inequality to burnout, ecological harm, and the erosion of inner authority, it argues that …

Air Traffic–Collegiate Training Initiative Program Feasibility In Kentucky, Gayle Marks, Bryan Gibson
Air Traffic–Collegiate Training Initiative Program Feasibility In Kentucky, Gayle Marks, Bryan Gibson
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Each day, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) air traffic control specialists (ATCSs) handle over 44,000 flights and oversee 29 million square miles of the United States National Airspace System. However, staffing shortages have grown more acute over the past 10 years, which has led to delayed and cancelled flights, a higher number of close misses over a short period of time, and frustrating air travel experiences. While the FAA has redoubled its efforts to recruit more ATCSs, it has limited training capacity. To expand training options available to prospective ATCSs, the FAA is working with postsecondary educational institutions to expand its …
The Role Of "Light Plagiarism" In Legal Writing , From A Recent Practitioner's Perspective, Donna L. Eng
The Role Of "Light Plagiarism" In Legal Writing , From A Recent Practitioner's Perspective, Donna L. Eng
UF Law Faculty Publications
Because practitioners are pressured to complete their tasks as quickly and efficiently as possible, lawyers regularly use documents previously drafted by other lawyers as a starting point for their drafting. Law students may be surprised to learn that in the modern practice of law, plagiarism is so widely accepted and encouraged. This article proposes several reasons why Legal Writing Professors should consider addressing that fact by discussing the process by which many lawyers draft documents in the real-world practice of law today.
First, the rules against plagiarism do not relate to the real-world practice of law. Unlike law students, who …

Across law schools, LAWR programs differ in credit hours, professors’ status, and the level of autonomy professors have in the syllabus, textbook, assignments, or deadlines. Regardless of the type of program you are entering, there are a few things that you can focus on up front when moving from practicing law to teaching law and developing Teacher You: (1) managing expectations (both yours and your students); (2) providing feedback to your students; and (3) managing your own professional development and well-being. What follows are our thoughts and suggestions for taking your first steps in becoming Teacher You.

Enhancing Engagement And Learning In Radiology: Integrating Game-Based And Case-Based Learning In Medical Education, Lisa Willson
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this mixed-methods action research is to integrate game-based learning (GBL), specifically an educational escape room, into case-based learning (CBL) and evaluate its impact on the engagement and academic performance of fourth-year medical students in an elective radiology course at a medical school in the southeastern United States. Sixteen students participated in the study; all identified as white. National trends indicate a significant decrease in student engagement and academic performance across various educational settings, including medical education (Kay & Pasarica, 2019). Locally, this trend is reflected in declining test scores and student feedback indicating disengagement and poor retention …
A Theory Of Calibrated Fiduciary Duties In Firms, Robert J. Rhee
A Theory Of Calibrated Fiduciary Duties In Firms, Robert J. Rhee
UF Law Faculty Publications
Although the laws of firms state the same traditional duty of loyalty, they diverge in expressing the duty of care and the concept of good faith. The differences are not subtle shades of refinement, but quantum contrasts of discrete legal states. The law shuffles, reclassifies, and relocates core elements of the duty of care and the concept of good faith uniquely in each form of firm. Why? Despite apparent legal divergence, a single fiduciary rule governs all forms of firms. This Article presents a theory of calibrated fiduciary duties that explains important variations in the formulation of fiduciary duty and …

Finding Black Girl Joy: The Lived Experiences Of Rural Black Girls, Tisha Scott-Addison
College of Education
This qualitative study examines the lived experiences of rural Black girls to gain a deeper understanding of how structural inequities manifest in their daily school lives. Grounded in intersectionality theory, the research examined how the convergence of race, gender, age, and geography influences the treatment and perceptions of Black girls within rural school settings. The central research questions guiding the study were: How do rural Black girls describe their experiences with school discipline, adultification, and a sense of belonging, and how do these experiences shape their educational journeys? Twenty Black female students in rural schools participated in semi-structured interviews. Data …
Learn To Fly: Enabling Deep Learning Based Perception And Control In Aerial Robotics, Krishna Muvva
Learn To Fly: Enabling Deep Learning Based Perception And Control In Aerial Robotics, Krishna Muvva
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly deployed in dynamic, GPS degraded, and cluttered environments, yet their autonomy remains fundamentally constrained by limitations in onboard perception and real-time control. This dissertation addresses these challenges by proposing a unified framework that co-designs deep learning-based perception and model-based control, organized around three core thrusts: Learn to Track, Learn to Localize, and Learn to Evade.
Learn to Track develops dynamic and adaptive perception control mechanisms that optimize CNN inference for target tracking. A control-aware CNN framework dynamically adjusts inference frequency based on UAV motion, reducing latency while maintaining visual lock. An adaptive CNN with …

Exploring Student Perceptions Of Culture Within An Algebra Unit: A Qualitative Action Research Study, Alesha Marie Love
Exploring Student Perceptions Of Culture Within An Algebra Unit: A Qualitative Action Research Study, Alesha Marie Love
Theses and Dissertations
Many barriers exist when teaching and learning mathematics. Although the mathematics curriculum is rigid and rigorous by design it is often not culturally relevant for the students engaging with the content. As a result, many students of color do not have an appropriate amount of representation to connect to a subject area that already seems exclusionary. This qualitative action research study examines the effects of introducing culturally relevant references into an Algebra unit for students of color, exploring the influence of exposure to cultural references and the minimal display of cultural and racial identities within the mathematics curriculum on students …

Criminalization Of Landlord/Tenant Law: Arkansas’ “Failure To Vacate” Statute, Anastacia Greene
Criminalization Of Landlord/Tenant Law: Arkansas’ “Failure To Vacate” Statute, Anastacia Greene
Law Faculty Scholarship
Arkansas is not a notable state. It is often confused with Kansas or Alabama. It is difficult for most Americans to find on a map. Perhaps Arkansas has few distinctions. However, it is the only place in the country where a tenant can be thrown in jail for missing a rental payment. The legal landscape of Arkansas is unique in many ways, primarily in its old-fashioned, even archaic, view of property law.
First, this article examines the history behind the Failure to Vacate statute. Next, this article reviews the constitutional challenges that the statute has faced, and recent litigation. Then, …

Contracting For Consumer Trade Compliance, Christine Abely
Contracting For Consumer Trade Compliance, Christine Abely
Law Faculty Scholarship
Export compliance is becoming increasingly important for parties required to abide by U.S. law, including many online sellers of consumer products. These retailers' contractual terms with their customers set forth a number of provisions governing the relationship between them, including those which deal with arbitration, indemnification, disclaimer of warranties, and other issues. Many such agreements also purport to create obligations on the part of the consumer as to export control and sanctions compliance relative to the products they purchase. These contract provisions attempt to do so, however, in often markedly different ways, and with language that may leave notable gaps …
