Smarter Disease Detection From Electronic Health Record Data: An End-To-End Ai-Augmented Pipeline For Computable Phenotyping, Dylan Owens Oct 2025

Smarter Disease Detection From Electronic Health Record Data: An End-To-End Ai-Augmented Pipeline For Computable Phenotyping, Dylan Owens

Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations

Electronic Health Records (EHR) contain a wealth of structured and unstructured patient data that can be leveraged for computable phenotyping, the process of algorithmically identifying patient cohorts with specific diseases or conditions. Traditional rule-based phenotyping approaches, while interpretable, often struggle with scalability, portability across institutions, and effective use of unstructured clinical narratives. Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) present new opportunities for synthesizing complex free-text information into concise, clinically meaningful representations. However, integrating LLMs into phenotyping workflows requires careful design to maintain transparency, interpretability, and measurable uncertainty—features essential for clinical adoption and downstream applications such as decision support.

Urban Political Ecology And Informal City: Using The Capabilities Approach In Co-Designing With Slum Communities, Patrick Vance S. Nogoy Oct 2025

Urban Political Ecology And Informal City: Using The Capabilities Approach In Co-Designing With Slum Communities, Patrick Vance S. Nogoy

Philosophy Department Faculty Publications

Slum communities which compose an informal city offer a serious challenge to urban metabolism approaches that promise to be inclusive in confronting environmental injustice. In particular, urban political ecology (UPE) frameworks critically examine power structures and relational dynamics in the environment where objectionable injustices are identified and corrected. However, Holifield (2009) finds UPE limiting as it excludes marginalized communities and other important factors. The main reason Holifield highlights is the dominance of Marxist UPE frameworks that interpret environmental injustices narrowly as results of uneven social power relations and dynamics driven primarily by neo-liberal capitalist behaviors, institutions, and activities. Alternatively, he …

Copyright, Learnright, And Fair Use: Rethinking Compensation For Ai Model Training, Frank Pasquale, Thomas W. Malone, Andrew Ting Oct 2025

Copyright, Learnright, And Fair Use: Rethinking Compensation For Ai Model Training, Frank Pasquale, Thomas W. Malone, Andrew Ting

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

Generative AI can rapidly output vast amounts of expressive content, some of which has great value for society. This new computational process also raises a deep question of fairness: Will the original creators of the content used to train these systems share in the value they create? The question becomes particularly urgent as the potential effects of generative AI on markets for creative works become clearer. Artists with a distinctive style may find it nearly impossible to sell their new work when very low-cost substitutes can be generated automatically. News publishers whose content can now be paraphrased by generative AI …

Ai Ballet Corrections: Applying Current Ballet Technique To An American In Paris, Anne-Duncan Enright Oct 2025

Ai Ballet Corrections: Applying Current Ballet Technique To An American In Paris, Anne-Duncan Enright

IPHS 391: Interdisciplinary AI Frontiers

This project explores the feasibility of using a Large Language Model (LLM) to provide technical ballet critiques, a task traditionally reliant on oral tradition and person-toperson instruction. To test accuracy, current-day ballet technical standards were applied to clips of Leslie Caron in the 1951 film An American in Paris. Seven clips of classical ballet were analyzed by both the researcher (a dancer with 15 years of pre-professional training) and Gemini. Using a structured, technique-focused prompt, the LLM was tasked with providing technical corrections. The results were compared to evaluate whether an AI can accurately identify specific technical flaws in real-time …

Disagreement Among Ai Models As A Metric Of Economic Uncertainty: Testing Ai Disagreement Against Traditional Uncertainty Metrics, Peter Dunson, Andre Mccloud, Gwen Eisenbeis Oct 2025

Disagreement Among Ai Models As A Metric Of Economic Uncertainty: Testing Ai Disagreement Against Traditional Uncertainty Metrics, Peter Dunson, Andre Mccloud, Gwen Eisenbeis

IPHS 391: Interdisciplinary AI Frontiers

This study proposes an AI-based economic uncertainty metric built from disagreement among three frontier large language models (Claude, Google Gemini, and ChatGPT) that score daily market sentiment across five dimensions: equities, inflation, labor, consumer confidence, and forward guidance. We quantify both across-model and within-model disagreement using cosine distance between 5-dimensional sentiment vectors and assess whether these disagreement measures track or relate to established uncertainty benchmarks (VIX, EPU, and the Citi Economic Surprise Index). Results suggested that across-model disagreement moved more closely with new and policy-based uncertainty than with option-implied volatility, as it was strongly positively correlated with the Economic Policy …

Forbidden Knowledge: School Libraries, The First Amendment, And The Right To Receive Information, Natalie H. Berg Oct 2025

Forbidden Knowledge: School Libraries, The First Amendment, And The Right To Receive Information, Natalie H. Berg

Washington Law Review

In the past five years, numerous Republican legislators and conservative parental groups have aggressively pushed to restrict sexual content in public schools. Many school districts have adopted policies that limit what topics are covered in class, and several statewide laws have legitimized and mandated these policies. Consequently, books featuring queer themes or characters are rapidly disappearing from public school libraries. These library restrictions, or book bans, have sparked substantial controversy and litigation.

This Comment examines state laws restricting public school libraries in Texas, Florida, and Iowa, arguing that these library restrictions violate the First Amendment on multiple grounds. Additionally, it …

Making Youth Matter, Kimberly Ambrose Oct 2025

Making Youth Matter, Kimberly Ambrose

Washington Law Review

Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children and adolescents in the United States. The harm caused by this public health crisis falls disproportionately on Black and Brown youth. While it is broadly accepted that children are less blameworthy than adults for their criminal behavior, what does this mean when they have access to and use guns? The Supreme Court held that youth matters when juveniles face life without parole sentences because children are different from adults—they fail to appreciate risks and consequences; are more impulsive; more susceptible to peer and family influence; less able to remove themselves …

Another Broken Promise: The Mmiwg2s Crisis And The Violation Of The Federal Indian Trust Obligation, Marley Forest Oct 2025

Another Broken Promise: The Mmiwg2s Crisis And The Violation Of The Federal Indian Trust Obligation, Marley Forest

Washington Law Review

Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people go missing and are murdered at rates nearly ten times the national average in the United States. This disproportionate epidemic of violence has been labeled the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit (MMIWG2S) crisis. Several factors exacerbate this crisis. First, European colonizers used violence against Native people, especially women and Two-Spirit people, as a tactic of control and domination since first contact in the 1600s. Second, nearly two hundred years of legislative actions and case law have effectively stripped Native Nations of all criminal jurisdictional power over crimes committed on their land …

Economías De Reciprocidad En Un Paisaje Neocolonizado: La Plaza Almirante Brown Como Nodo Socioecológico Repensar La Belleza, La Pertenencia Y Las Plantas Desde La Educación Ambiental Y El Valor Plural Isp Report, Yereni Bruno-Sanchez

Argentina: People, Environment, and Climate Change in Patagonia and Antarctica

This study seeks to understand how ecological imperialism present in urban green spaces affects the optimal functioning of the reciprocal economies that sustain these places, through the case of Plaza Almirante Brown in Río Grande, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. The perceptions, values, and emotions that visitors attribute to this urban ecosystem are analyzed, as well as the social dynamics that keep it alive. The work acknowledges and respects the sense of place already established, while identifying a gap in the plaza's relational economy linked to the limited presence and public understanding of native flora. It proposes that the incorporation of …

Public Perception And Awareness Of Shark Nets In New South Wales, Drew Rosenfeld Oct 2025

Public Perception And Awareness Of Shark Nets In New South Wales, Drew Rosenfeld

Australia: Rainforest, Reef, and Cultural Ecology

Shark nets have been in use along the beaches of New South Wales since 1937, with the purpose of the nets to reduce human shark encounters near popular beaches. While the purpose of the nets is to protect personal safety, the nets also entangle and harm non target marine life. This study examined public perception and awareness of shark nets in NSW through a mixed method approach that utilized survey and interview data. In total, 201 surveys were administered on Bondi and Coogee beach. Five interviews were also carried out with key stakeholder groups. Results have shown that public perception …

Learning From The Roost: An Exploration Of Public Perceptions And Education Around Grey-Headed Flying Foxes At Centennial Parklands, Sydney., Gigi Pandole

Australia: Rainforest, Reef, and Cultural Ecology

Grey-headed flying foxes (Pteropus poliocephalus) have become a familiar feature of many Australian cities, and this visibility often prompts a mix of curiosity, uncertainty and concern. In Sydney, the long-term colony at Lachlan Swamp in Centennial Parklands brings thousands of visitors into close contact with the species each week. Some people respond with interest or appreciation, while others feel uneasy due to noise, smell or common misconceptions about disease. These everyday encounters raise an important question for conservation: how do people form their perceptions of flying foxes, and what role does education play in shaping coexistence in urban environments? This …

Urban Noisy Miner Populations And Vegetation Composition Hinders Small Bird Communities In Urban Sydney, Australia And Canberra, Australia, Libby Hennes Oct 2025

Urban Noisy Miner Populations And Vegetation Composition Hinders Small Bird Communities In Urban Sydney, Australia And Canberra, Australia, Libby Hennes

Australia: Rainforest, Reef, and Cultural Ecology

Increasing urbanization to prioritize habitats that are eucalypt dominant with poor understory density has resulted in an overabundance of the native honeyeater the Noisy Miner (Manorina melanocephala). Noisy Miners are incredibly aggressive, especially towards birds that are smaller than them. This is believed to have contributed to declining small bird populations in remnant woodland patches that are dominated by Noisy Miners. This same pattern was discovered in urban greenspaces across Sydney, Australia and Canberra, Australia during November 2025. Small birds were almost completely absent in sites in Sydney and small birds in Canberra had a strong negative correlation with the …

It's Alive! Comparing Wet And Dry Sclerophyll Revegetation In Wollemi National Park Following The 2019-2020 Bushfires, Bethany Hall

Australia: Rainforest, Reef, and Cultural Ecology

Wollemi National Park is part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Areas and contains many endemic plants and animals. Increasingly severe fires are threatening the area. This study aims to compare how dry and wet sclerophyll sites are recovering after the 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfires. We surveyed eight wet sites and nine dry sites that were burned early in the bushfires. Diameter at breast height (DBH) and resprouting vigor was measured to determine if and how well trees were recovering. Dry sites experienced higher resprouting vigor compared to wet sites. Wet sites had a higher number of unique trees …

Rethinking Courtroom Presence In The Virtual Era, Jenia Iontcheva Turner Oct 2025

Rethinking Courtroom Presence In The Virtual Era, Jenia Iontcheva Turner

Indiana Law Journal

Technological innovation has made virtual appearances by criminal defendants increasingly common. These appearances have advanced efficiency but also raised questions about the scope of both the right and the duty of defendants to be physically present in court. Should judges, for example, be allowed to hold virtual arraignments, even if a defendant wishes to appear in person? Can defendants opt for virtual appearances at will? While courts are beginning to address these questions, they have yet to develop a coherent framework to evaluate when virtual appearances are constitutional and appropriate. This Article seeks to contribute to this project by examining …

Breaking The Echo Chamber: Market Failures In The Social Media Information Market And The Need For Reform, Aleco M. Hamrick Oct 2025

Breaking The Echo Chamber: Market Failures In The Social Media Information Market And The Need For Reform, Aleco M. Hamrick

Indiana Law Journal

Traditionally, the information market is centrally controlled. Once information consumption transitioned from the physical world to the digital world, the barrier of entry to the information dissemination market was reduced from printing presses and distribution networks to a smartphone and an internet connection. Ostensibly anyone can distribute any idea at any time. This strains the traditional information governance model that has dominated the information market for centuries; where epistemic authorities once controlled both the streams of information and the kinds of information that entered them, now social media companies exert limited control over information streams and no control over what …

The Stewart Lecture In Labor And Employment Law: Employment And Identity, Matthew T. Bodie Oct 2025

The Stewart Lecture In Labor And Employment Law: Employment And Identity, Matthew T. Bodie

Indiana Law Journal

Work shapes our identities, and our identities shape our work. The tension between personal identity and work identity drives popular culture, as seen in shows like Severance and The Bear, and it frames our conceptions about who we are and what gives our lives meaning. In many respects the law has assumed a clear separation between work lives and personal lives, divvying up control and responsibility over these realms on that basis. But the divide, never absolute, has blurred considerably through technological change, legal developments, and social expectations, resulting in a more pervasive employer presence in both our workspaces …

Because I Care: The Effect Of Value Congruence And Compensation Scheme On Target Setting In Social Mission Organizations, Wioleta Olczak, Tyler F. Thomas, Dimitri Yatsenko Oct 2025

Because I Care: The Effect Of Value Congruence And Compensation Scheme On Target Setting In Social Mission Organizations, Wioleta Olczak, Tyler F. Thomas, Dimitri Yatsenko

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

Many organizations, including for-profit firms, seek to support a social mission. This study experimentally examines how superiors' value congruence and compensation scheme affect superiors' target-setting decisions in social mission organizations. We predict and find that more value-congruent superiors set higher targets for their subordinates than less value-congruent superiors to motivate

their subordinates to advance the organization's social mission. We also find that superiors set higher targets for their subordinates when compensated with performance-based pay rather than a fixed wage. We highlight the importance of superiors' value congruence with the organization's social initiatives and compensation scheme on their target-setting decisions. Organizations …

Assessing Market Efficiency In Corporate And Securities Litigation, Charles Korsmo, Minor Myers Oct 2025

Assessing Market Efficiency In Corporate And Securities Litigation, Charles Korsmo, Minor Myers

Indiana Law Journal

In recent decades, courts have increasingly looked to trading prices as evidence—often conclusive evidence—in high-stakes corporate law disputes over a company’s fair value. This development has been especially dramatic, and consequential, in Delaware. Where a stock trades in an efficient market, the logic goes, the prevailing trading price can be used to resolve any disputed issue of valuation. But this expedient comes with an unavoidable question: When is a market “sufficiently efficient” for a court to rely on it as a measure of value?

Federal courts have long experience evaluating the relative efficiency of trading markets in the context of …

The Pastor As Romantic Author: Ai, Preaching, And The Unacknowledged Inheritance Of Authenticity, Daniel Plate, James Hutson Oct 2025

The Pastor As Romantic Author: Ai, Preaching, And The Unacknowledged Inheritance Of Authenticity, Daniel Plate, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

This article interrogates contemporary reactions to sermons produced with generative technologies through a historical–conceptual lens, arguing that widespread judgments of such outputs as “soulless,” “generic,” or lacking a “beating heart” are best explained by an unacknowledged inheritance from nineteenth-century Romantic expressivism. Rather than treating resistance to machine authorship as a theological verdict on computational incapacity, the study reconstructs how Romanticism centered authorship in sincere self-expression and solitary genius, displacing earlier heraldic expectations that prized fidelity to a received message. Methodologically, the analysis combines intellectual history with discourse analysis of global Christian experiments in synthetic composition (2020–2025), denominational guidance, and media …

‘Invest!’: Liberty Bonds And Stock Ownership Over The Twentieth Century, Gillian Brunet, Eric Hilt, Matthew Jaremski Oct 2025

‘Invest!’: Liberty Bonds And Stock Ownership Over The Twentieth Century, Gillian Brunet, Eric Hilt, Matthew Jaremski

Economics: Faculty Publications

The Liberty Bond drives of World War I were nation-wide interventions aimed at increasing financial literacy and associating bond ownership with patriotism. Using data from the first year of the Survey of Consumer Finances, 1947, through 1971, we investigate whether exposure to the drives shaped investing behavior over the long run. We find that households residing in counties that had high Liberty Bond participation had greater stock and bond ownership rates in later decades, and held more favorable opinions towards retirement saving and stock investment. These effects are present only among cohorts actually exposed to the bond drives, and not …

Disparities In Health Insurance And Delayed Care Among Hispanic Immigrants In The United States., Temitope Ayodele, Connor Fletcher, Kirk B Beredjiklian, Michael Valenzuela, Zane Mazur

Orthopedic Surgery Resident Research

BACKGROUND: Hispanic immigrants in the United States face persistent barriers to healthcare, including lower rates of insurance coverage and a greater likelihood of delaying care due to cost. Clarifying the independent effects of ethnicity and nativity on these disparities is essential to inform effective policy.

METHODS: We analyzed pooled data from the 2019-2023 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), accessed through the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS). Primary outcomes were being uninsured and delayed medical care due to cost in the past 12 months. Key independent variables were Hispanic ethnicity and nativity (US-born vs. foreign-born). Covariates included survey year, age, …
