Benerd College Faculty Articles

A large body of research has documented weaker student performance in online courses relative to face-to-face courses across multiple outcomes, including grades, course completion, and persistence. These gaps are particularly pronounced for underserved students. In response, colleges and universities have sought to improve the quality of online instruction by providing technology resources, student and faculty technical support, and, the focus of this study, professional development for faculty teaching online. However, despite the increasing popularity of professional development for online instructors, evidence on its effectiveness in shaping faculty practices and confidence remains limited. This study used survey data from 82 faculty …

Exploring Generative Artificial Intelligence (Genai) And Developing Ai Competencies Through Joint Media Engagement In Family Settings, Tolulope Famaye

All Dissertations

As generative AI (GenAI) becomes increasingly prevalent, institutions seek to understand how students can explore AI in classrooms and develop AI literacy. However, little is known about how, families use these Large Language Models (LLMs) at home and how such engagement supports the development of foundational AI literacy skills. This study examines family engagement with generative AI to understand how AI competencies develops outside formal classrooms and to provide insights for designing contextually relevant AI learning experiences in schools. The study employs a single case study design, integrating quantitative analysis, thematic analysis, and quantitative ethnography to examine and analyze data …

Ai-Optimized Resource Management In Next-Gen Wireless Networks, Fatemeh Lotfi Dec 2025

Ai-Optimized Resource Management In Next-Gen Wireless Networks, Fatemeh Lotfi

All Dissertations

Next-generation wireless networks must deliver highly adaptive, scalable, and intelligent connectivity to satisfy the heterogeneous demands of emerging services, including enhanced mobile broadband, massive machine-type communications, and ultra reliable low latency applications. The Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) paradigm has emerged as a key enabler of this vision, introducing openness, virtualization, and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven control into the RAN ecosystem. O-RAN’s disaggregated architecture facilitates multi-vendor interoperability and empowers intelligent management through the RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC). However, achieving real-time, autonomous, and generalized optimization in such a dynamic environment remains a significant challenge due to its distributed nature, non-stationary traffic, and …

Wacsaw: An Adaptive, Statistical Method To Classify Movement Into Sleep And Wakefulness States, Austin Vandegriffe, V. A. Samaranayake, Matthew S. Thimgan

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Wearable actimeters can improve our understanding of sleep in the natural environments. Current algorithms may produce inaccuracies in specific individuals and circumstances, such as quiet wakefulness. New hardware allows data collection at higher frequencies enabling sophisticated analytical methods. We have developed a novel statistical algorithm, the Wasserstein Algorithm for Classifying Sleep and Wakefulness (WACSAW), to identify behavioral states from recordings of everyday movement. WACSAW employs optimal transport techniques to identify segments with differing activity variability. Functions characterizing the segments' movement distributions were clustered into two groups using a k-nearest neighbors and labeled as sleep or wake based on their proximity …

Maria Gaetana Agnesi And The Proto-Feminist Movement, Katherine D. Wahnsiedler Dec 2025

Maria Gaetana Agnesi And The Proto-Feminist Movement, Katherine D. Wahnsiedler

Honors College Theses

Maria Gaetana Agnesi, a mathematician and scholar from the 18 th century, is an important historical figure who received a position at the University of Bologna. She is the second woman ever to be appointed to a University professorship, laying the foundation for other women in academia later to come. Many historians interpret Agnesi’s life to be representative of early feminist ideas and would therefore be an example of a proto-feminist. However, this is not accurate, nor is it an ideology Agnesi likely would have subscribed to. Analyzing primary sources written by Agnesi and her contemporaries helps provide insight into …

Adaptive Deep Learning In Physical Layer Applications, Ali Owfi Dec 2025

Adaptive Deep Learning In Physical Layer Applications, Ali Owfi

All Dissertations

Traditionally, signal processing models in communication systems have been designed based on solid foundations in statistics and information theory, often assuming linearity and optimizing for simplified models. However, real-world communication systems exhibit numerous imperfections and non-linearities that traditional linear models struggle to capture accurately. Deep Learning (DL)-based approaches, unconstrained by rigid mathematical models, have shown promise in optimizing system performance by accommodating specific hardware configurations and dynamic channel conditions as an alternative to the traditional methods. Despite all the recent research efforts on DL-based methods for physical layer applications, DL models have still not been widely applied to physical layer …

How Do Server-Based Architectures Compare To Serverless Architectures In Terms Of Development, Deployment Process, Scalability, And Cost-Effectiveness?, Natalio Fernandes Gomes

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Applications are tested in developers’ machines before deployment, since this is the standard practice that ensures the software is functioning as it should before deploying it to a standard practice that ensures the software is functioning as it should before deploying it to a specific environment. The deployment process consists of setting up the environmental requirements, infrastructure configuration on cloud or on-premises servers. Consequently, developers often run into the infamous "It works on my machine" problem. This issue is defined by the fact that applications function correctly in development environments but fail during deployment to production. Furthermore, scalability concerns and …

European-Islamic Ceramics From The Eighteenth Century Onward, Katherine Collins

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The foundation for this examination rests upon prior research analyzing ceramic traditions and trade routes across East Asia and the Islamic Empires from the eighth to the sixteenth centuries. This knowledge establishes how East Asian innovations, such as porcelain and underglaze techniques, flowed westward through the Middle East via silk trade routes, profoundly influencing South Asian, Middle Eastern, and Ottoman ceramic production and aesthetics. They were able to trace how crucial Islamic technical traditions, including lusterware and tin-glazing, were subsequently transmitted to the Mediterranean basin through conquest and trade. This provided the technical vocabulary necessary for European precursors such as …

This qualitative desktop research study, employing discourse analysis, critically examines the complex relationships between aid, neocolonialism, and recolonisation in Africa, exploring the implications for the continent's future development. Drawing on a critical discourse analysis of existing literature, policy documents, and online archives, this study reveals how the aid paradigm has perpetuated neocolonialism and recolonisation in Africa, undermining the continent's sovereignty, agency, and self-determination. The study illuminates the power dynamics and relationships …

How Is South Africa's Black Economic Empowerment Policy (Bee) Addressing Historical Inequalities And Promoting Inclusive Development As Of 2024?, Nasim Uz Zaman Dec 2025

How Is South Africa's Black Economic Empowerment Policy (Bee) Addressing Historical Inequalities And Promoting Inclusive Development As Of 2024?, Nasim Uz Zaman

Southern African Journal of Policy and Development

South Africa’s Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) policy was introduced to dismantle apartheid-era economic disparities; however, its corporate-driven model has fostered symbolic compliance rather than substantive transformation. This study critically examines BEE’s structural limitations, specifically its failure to generate mass employment, its susceptibility to elite capture, and the prevalence of "fronting" practices. By juxtaposing BEE with affirmative action frameworks in Malaysia, India, and the United States, this research elucidates why ownership redistribution alone has failed to translate into inclusive economic mobility. Employing a qualitative policy analysis, this study synthesizes unemployment trajectories, implementation distortions, and systemic governance inefficiencies to highlight the constraints …
