Framing And Contesting Unauthorized Work, Angela D. Morrison
Framing And Contesting Unauthorized Work, Angela D. Morrison
Faculty Scholarship
Unauthorized workers face precarity in the workplace and the threat of forced expulsion from their communities. Some of the reasons for that precarity result from how the law frames unauthorized workers. The law views unauthorized workers as lacking full human or civil rights, as “unauthorized,” to the exclusion of their other identities. The legal system also creates a binary that views unauthorized workers as either criminals who are complicit in their exploitation or passive victims for employers to exploit. This Article draws on social movement literature to theorize the processes that result in this framing and to explore how immigrant …
Green-Line: Nature In An Urban Setting, Hunter Chaput
Green-Line: Nature In An Urban Setting, Hunter Chaput
Architecture Theses
Many cities lack one of the most beautiful and important aspects of life, nature. When people think of cities they think of traffic and concrete and congestion. It can be a big turn off to people who are used to trees and grass and the empty sounds of nature. With the ever-expanding construction of cities nature gets pushed farther and farther out. Grass turns into concrete, trees get chopped down and in their place businesses are built. Thus, the question arises: how can architecture help bring nature back into the city? For the past century cities have been designed around …

Edgar Allan Poe Rare Books Library At Yale University: The Rematerialization Of Language, Luke Devries
Edgar Allan Poe Rare Books Library At Yale University: The Rematerialization Of Language, Luke Devries
Architecture Theses
Michel de Certeau states, “The current industrial mass production of visual imagery tends to alienate vision from emotional involvement and identification and turns imagery into a mesmerizing flow without focus or participation” (Pallasmaa). Based upon a critique of the expedient exchange of information in our modern culture, this thesis examines how creative language and the act of reading itself might open an interpretive dimension for new pathways that are more and more lost in our current cultural milieu. Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s story La Ligeia, which follows a grieving lover through the death and reemergence of his first true …
Wellness In Educational Facilities, Carol Carpenter
Wellness In Educational Facilities, Carol Carpenter
Architecture Theses
Universally children are sent to attend school to gain basic knowledge in most communities. In the United States the standard is about 7 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 13 years. These educational institutions that are in place have a strong impact on the growth and development of young individuals. Many schools are historical or show strong elements that speak to the time they were built. These elements include architectural style, classroom size, amounts, and types, and systems within the building. As communities grow from the framework in which the school was originally constructed, there lies the opportunity …
Natural Disasters, Institutions, And Economic Recovery: Effects Of Hurricane Katrina, Corbin Carl Thomas Clark
Natural Disasters, Institutions, And Economic Recovery: Effects Of Hurricane Katrina, Corbin Carl Thomas Clark
Agribusiness and Applied Economics
This study analyzes the effects of Hurricane Katrina on formal and informal institutions in Louisiana, Florida, and Mississippi to provide insights into the recovery trajectories of the states. I use the synthetic control method to construct counterfactual states. I find that the hurricane had large and lingering effects on population and per capita income in all three states, with differing impacts on formal and informal institutions. In Louisiana, the hurricane led to increases in labor market freedom, minimum wage freedom (i.e. deregulation), and property tax freedom (i.e. tax reduction), along with permanent increases in government spending and the government employment. …
Mapping The Unconventional Monetary Policy Of The Fed With Financial Market, Proma Sen Gupta
Mapping The Unconventional Monetary Policy Of The Fed With Financial Market, Proma Sen Gupta
Agribusiness and Applied Economics
The value of currency in circulation and the value of the assets side of the balance sheet has become a choice variable for implementing policy under the monetary policy framework introduced by Ben Bernanke during the 2008 financial crisis. While policy responses to changing economic conditions are obvious, the macroeconomy's response to these policy changes requires more thought. To evaluate, directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) have been used to analyze the monetary policy's reaction to shifting economic indicators. I am also interested in mapping the effects of changes as well as to find out the interdependencies among the policy variables along …
Impacts Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Housing Markets, Tuhinur Rahman Chowdhury
Impacts Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Housing Markets, Tuhinur Rahman Chowdhury
Agribusiness and Applied Economics
Efficient housing markets are critical for economic stability in the United States. Over one million people died in the United States from COVID-19. One method employed to halt the spread of the virus were stay-at-home orders. The effects of stay-at-home orders on different distributions of housing prices in 101 housing markets were investigated in this study. To estimate the effects of executive orders on house prices, an unconditional quantile regression model was employed for analysis. Results suggest that lower-priced houses experienced a larger price increase while the executive order was in effect. Following the expiration of the executive order, larger …

Rangeland Forage Growth Prediction, Logistics, Energy, And Economics Analysis And Tool Development Using Open-Source Software, Subhashree Navaneetha Srinivasagan
Agribusiness and Biosystems Engineering
Forage availability was crucial for livestock production across the United States. Rangelands occupied vast areas 31 % of land and were the primary source of forage for livestock. However, extreme climatic conditions such as drought affect rangeland forage production and pose a serious threat to the rangeland enterprise. This increases the need to monitor forage in vast rangelands and adapt to other measures such as cultivating or buying forage to balance demand and supply. Despite this need, resources (studies and tools) on rangeland forage monitoring and existing forage production, handling, and economics were scattered and scarce. Therefore, a comprehensive systematic …
Using Uas Imagery And Computer Vision To Support Site-Specific Weed Control In Corn, Ranjan Sapkota
Using Uas Imagery And Computer Vision To Support Site-Specific Weed Control In Corn, Ranjan Sapkota
Agribusiness and Biosystems Engineering
Currently, a blanket application of herbicides across the field without considering the spatial distribution of weeds is the most used method to control weeds in corn. Unmanned aerial systems (UASs) can provide high spatial resolution imagery, which can be used to map weeds across a field with a high spatial and temporal resolution during early growing season to support site-specific weed control (SSWC). The proposed approach assumes that plants growing outside the corn rows are weeds that need to be controlled. For that, we are proposing the use of “Pixel Intensity Projection” (PIP) algorithm for the detection of corn rows …

The Effect Of Hemp Byproduct Supplementation On Beef Quality, Kiersten Gundersen
The Effect Of Hemp Byproduct Supplementation On Beef Quality, Kiersten Gundersen
Animal Sciences
The supplementation of hempseed cake (hemp byproduct) could be considered an alternative protein and fiber source for ruminants such as cattle. Hempseed cake might be a successful alternative feed source due to cattle’s digestive abilities. Yet, the physiological effects caused by cannabinoids in hemp (cannabidiol [CBD] and (-)-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinaol [THC]) are of concern. However, hemp with much less than 0.3% THC on a dry matter basis can remain a potential alternative feed ingredient. The objective of this study was to evaluate the significance of hempseed cake inclusion in a late finishing ration on carcass characteristics, meat quality characteristics, retail shelf-life, proximate …
Understanding Consumer Acceptance Of Multiple Red Meat Products And Perceptions Of The American Meat Science Association’S Intercollegiate Meat Judging Program Benefits From Participants, Michaella Fevold
Animal Sciences
Per capita consumption of red meat products totaled 67 kg in 2017. Given the popularity of meat, it is important for meat scientists to monitor consumers acceptance of red meat products. Consumer acceptance of red meat products is driven by meat quality characteristics such as tenderness. The objectives of the second and third chapter was to investigate the influence of beef ribeye steak weight and thickness on purchasing behaviors of consumers and to better understand the effects of frozen storage on protein degradation, lipid oxidation, meat quality, and sensory characteristics of lamb. As beef carcasses have grown over the time …
Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Size, Feeding Behavior, And Feed Efficency In Beef Cattle, Macie Mosher
Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Size, Feeding Behavior, And Feed Efficency In Beef Cattle, Macie Mosher
Animal Sciences
Feed efficiency in cow-calf operations can be influenced by multiple environmental and physiological factors. The current study examined the association between body size (weight, frame score, and volume), linear body measurements, and feeding behavior with different measures of feed efficiency in multiparous lactating beef cows. Prediction models for dry matter intake in cows using linear body measurements were also developed. Our findings indicate that body size measurements and feeding behavior may influence measures of efficiency. The inclusion of body measurements in prediction models of intake may serve as accurate and feasible methods for estimating intake of cows on farm. The …

Pieces Of The Whole: Using The Research Process To Integrate Data Management And Information Literacy Skills, Patricia Condon, Megan Bresnahan, Eugenia Opuda
Faculty Publications
The research process is naturally embraced as part of the academic curriculum in higher education. Graduate students write theses and dissertations based on their original scholarships, undergraduate students produce papers for courses and work in labs or in the field, and both participate in faculty-led research projects. The research process is tackled holistically through coursework, yet when library instructors are invited to teach students about information literacy and research data management topics, these may be presented as tangential to or mistimed with other course content and learning activities. In this chapter, the authors present a comprehensive, student-centered model for teaching …

On Fatigue Detection For Air Traffic Controllers Based On Fuzzy Fusion Of Multiple Features, Yi Hu, Zhuo Liu, Aiqin Hou, Chase Wu, Wenbin Wei, Yanjun Wang, Min Liu
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Fatigue detection for air traffic controllers is an important yet challenging problem in aviation safety research. Most of the existing methods for this problem are based on facial features. In this paper, we propose an ensemble learning model that combines both facial features and voice features and design a fatigue detection method through multifeature fusion, referred to as Facial and Voice Stacking (FV-Stacking). Specifically, for facial features, we first use OpenCV and Dlib libraries to extract mouth and eye areas and then employ a combination of M-Convolutional Neural Network (M-CNN) and E-Convolutional Neural Network (E-CNN) to determine the state of …
Synthesis Of Novel Biomass-Derived Diol And Epoxide Monomers For Coatings Applications, Catherine Sutton
Synthesis Of Novel Biomass-Derived Diol And Epoxide Monomers For Coatings Applications, Catherine Sutton
Chemistry and Biochemistry
There are few monomers or precursors in the polymer industry that are more ubiquitous than bisphenol A (BPA). According to the CDC, about 5-6 billion pounds of BPA are produced worldwide annually. For the synthesis of coatings and polymeric materials, BPA is polymerized directly as a diol into polycarbonates or, to a lesser extent, glycidated into an epoxy monomer or resin. For coatings applications, BPA epoxy resins are utilized in protecting metal cans from acidic foods and beverages to heavy machinery like farm equipment from weather-related corrosion. In part, this popularity has led to scrutiny of the popular monomer from …
The Planetary Rift: Awakening The Senses To The Necessity Of Nature, Trevor Guck
The Planetary Rift: Awakening The Senses To The Necessity Of Nature, Trevor Guck
Architecture Theses
Around the world, confirmation of the deterioration of our planet’s ecosystem is evident. It’s become so common that we are no longer disturbed by the incineration of ancient rainforests and depletion of drinkable water and breathable air. History shows that ancient humankind always saw themselves as fundamentally intertwined with Nature and understood that a balanced co-existence was vital for survival. However, as humankind advanced, we have severed ourselves from this life-giving force perceived in the rituals and symbols in the traditional world, pursuing instead an intellectualized agenda of productivity which has had a tremendous impact on our treatment of “Nature.” …

Architecture Theses
The traumatizing effects of homelessness on families can have long lasting consequences, especially for children who often miss considerable amounts of school due to their newly disrupted life. Without a solid education, these children may struggle in the future to secure stable jobs which then places them at risk of entering back into homelessness. Additionally, homelessness in the United States comes with an attached stigma of being lazy, amoral, or even delinquent, so for parents or single mothers, the shame of being homeless can prevent them from seeking assistance and creates a barrier between them and the surrounding community. This …
