Pre-Breeding To Combine Diverse Disease Resistance And Agrotype Genes In Hard Winter Wheat, Sagar Adhikari
Pre-Breeding To Combine Diverse Disease Resistance And Agrotype Genes In Hard Winter Wheat, Sagar Adhikari
Plant Sciences
The NDSU hard winter wheat (HWW) breeding program aims to develop improved varieties that are better equipped to cope with the environmental and disease challenges of the northern prairies. To achieve this, it is necessary to continually acquire and employ useful disease resistance and adaptation genes from other sources of HWW and hard spring wheat (HSW) germplasm. The first study pursued the transfer of the FHB resistance QTL Qfhb.rwg- 5A.1 and Qfhb.rwg-5A.2 (obtained from HSW PI 277012) through continued backcrosses into the HWW cultivar, ND Noreen, utilizing previously derived cross segregates and markers. A second study used modified single seed …
Non-Chemical Weed Management In Annual And Perennial Organic Cropping Systems, Zachary Pull
Non-Chemical Weed Management In Annual And Perennial Organic Cropping Systems, Zachary Pull
Plant Sciences
Weedy pests, especially perennial weeds, are among the most challenging barriers to organic crop production. Improving non-chemical weed management tactics for established organic productions systems, like cool-season grains, and emerging crops like perennial flax could benefit producers. We compared three crop sequences for creeping perennial weed suppression in organic grains. Three years of alfalfa was associated with reduced densities and aboveground biomass of perennial weeds compared to sequences that alternated grain and cover crops. Interseeding cover crops with perennial flax for weed management was attempted, but neither flax nor cover established well. Flame weeding and cultivation in perennial flax were …
Kentucky Bluegrass Establishment Under Saline, Waterlogging, And Saline-Waterlogging Conditions, Kevin Rue
Kentucky Bluegrass Establishment Under Saline, Waterlogging, And Saline-Waterlogging Conditions, Kevin Rue
Plant Sciences
Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) (KBG) is commonly used for golf fairways, however, it is sensitive to salinity and waterlogging. The objectives of this research were to determine (1) KBG growth response to saline, waterlogging, and saline-waterlogging conditions and (2) efficacy of seed priming in stress enhancement. Nine KBG cultivars were subjected to the aforementioned stresses at the seedling stage for four weeks. The combined saline-waterlogging caused more severe damage than individual stress. ‘Sudden Impact’, ‘Award’, ‘Limousine’, and ‘Kenblue’ were relatively tolerant to the stresses based on results from tissue biomass, root length, and specific root length stresses, while ‘Moonlight’ …
An Examination Of Land Preparation Methods To Alleviate Common Issues Associated With Pipeline Reclamation, Jarrett Lardy
An Examination Of Land Preparation Methods To Alleviate Common Issues Associated With Pipeline Reclamation, Jarrett Lardy
Soil Science
Post-seeding land preparation methods can improve reclamation success; however, limited research is available for the Williston Basin. A field study evaluated four treatments: land imprinting, hydromulch, straw crimping, and the combination of hydromulch and land imprinting for their abilities to reduce simulated rainfall runoff and sediment losses and for their ability to promote plant growth. Straw crimping reduced total runoff and may likely be the best option for providing surface cover. However, vegetation establishment was found to be not significant among the treatments. Additionally, a laboratory study examined seven soils for their penetration resistances (PR) across variable water contents (Θg) …

Rchb.], when subjected to cyclical flood and drought, varying submergence depths and durations, NaCl, and NaCl with petroleum hydrocarbons. Chinese silvergrass and switchgrass survived cyclical soil flooding and drought and submergence for 7-d at a depth of 30 cm …
Soil Biological Functioning And Recovery In Soils Disturbed From Bakken Oil And Gas Activities, Zachary John Bartsch
Soil Biological Functioning And Recovery In Soils Disturbed From Bakken Oil And Gas Activities, Zachary John Bartsch
Soil Science
Oil and gas activity-related soil disturbances can alter soil properties and reduce microbial function, which is crucial for nutrient cycling and proper soil function. The goal of this research was to investigate effects of remediation techniques on soil biological property recovery following various types of oil and gas disturbances. A series of studies evaluating microbial abundance, crop growth, and biological properties were conducted on crude oil-contaminated subsoils remediated either with thermal desorption or land farming. Thermally desorbed subsoil achieved similar yields to non-contaminated topsoil after four years. Additionally, biological properties in blended soil (1:1 topsoil to subsoil) were studied using …
Calcium Acetate: An Alternative To Gypsum For Brine Impacted Soils, Annalie Peterson
Calcium Acetate: An Alternative To Gypsum For Brine Impacted Soils, Annalie Peterson
Soil Science
With North Dakota being ranked as a leading producer of oil and natural gas in the United States, the possibility of accidental produced water (aka “brine” or “salt water”) spills is a continuous concern. Brine water poses numerous threats to soil properties as it has the potential of causing soil dispersion by increased concentrations of sodium. The goal of this research was to compare the effectiveness of several calcium amendments: calcium acetate, flue gas desulphurization gypsum and pelletized gypsum, on improving the saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) and removing sodium of three brine impacted soils. Ultimately, increasing rates of calcium acetate …

Optimizing Prediction Power Of Rna-Seq On Intrinsic Characteristics In Breast Cancer, Yuan Liu
Statistics
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide, and accurate and early detection of breast cancer is vital in characterizing the disease. Transcriptomic expression is embedded abundant tumor and cell state information. However, selecting a good pipeline in applying mRNA expression is critical in downstream characteristics prediction. We designed a study that focused on determining the best combinations of preprocessing processes in predictions. We tested six normalization methods, two gene selection methods, and over ten machine learning algorithms. By using appropriate evaluation metrics, we recommend using FPKM normalization method combined with either gene selection method and employing RF …
Up In Flames: Using Anthropology To Analyze The Increasing Cremation Rates In North Dakota, Natalie Anne Basta
Up In Flames: Using Anthropology To Analyze The Increasing Cremation Rates In North Dakota, Natalie Anne Basta
Sociology and Anthropology
Cremation rates within North Dakota, and the greater US, have been rapidly increasing over the recent decades. Funeral directors, coroners, and death investigators alike have noticed the increase; however, nobody has made a positive determination for why the increase was occurring. Using an anthropological lens, I evaluated the state of cremation with North Dakota and with the use of GIS analysis and interviews with local funeral directors, I was able to determine that there is not one specific reason for the rising cremation rates. Instead, there are multiple factors at play, one of which is cost.
Does Social Capital Always Affect Immigrant Employment? Analyzing The Mediating Effect Of United States’ Cultural Context On The Relationship Between Social Capital And Immigrant Employment, Debarati Kole
Sociology and Anthropology
The paper investigates if culture mediates the relation between immigrants’ social capital and the likelihood of employment in a host country. It applies Social Capital Theory to predict potential effects of culture and then, conducts statistical tests on data for two distinct periods in United States history. Results are consistent with prior findings that social capital enhances the likelihood of employment for immigrants. In general, culture did not affect the efficacy of social capital on increasing the likelihood of immigrant employment, though there was an effect of culture on the quantity of bridging capital and immigrants’ trust in members of …
Siege Starvation: A War Crime Of Societal Torture, Tom Dannenbaum
Siege Starvation: A War Crime Of Societal Torture, Tom Dannenbaum
Chicago Journal of International Law
A recent amendment to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court has drawn unprecedented attention to the war crime of starvation of civilians as a method of warfare. It comes at a time when mass starvation in war is resurgent, devastating populations in Yemen, Ethiopia, Syria, South Sudan, Nigeria, and elsewhere. The practice has also drawn the scrutiny of the United Nations Security Council. And yet, despite this heightened profile and sharpened urgency, what precisely is criminally wrongful about starvation methods remains underspecified.
A common way of thinking about the criminal wrong is as a form of killing or …
The Persistent Objector Doctrine: Identifying Contradictions, Shelly Aviv Yeini
The Persistent Objector Doctrine: Identifying Contradictions, Shelly Aviv Yeini
Chicago Journal of International Law
The persistent objector doctrine (POD) in international law provides that a rule of customary international law (CIL) will not oblige a state that has persistently objected to the development of the rule. The doctrine requires that the objection be “persistent” and “consistent” and that it not be contradictory. Yet, while in this context the meaning of persistency and consistency, in this context, has been discussed in the legal literature, the term “contradiction” has not. Therefore, it is not clear what type of behavior would represent a contradiction that would disqualify a state from persistent objector (PO) status. In practice, this …
Searching For Justice For Australia’S Stolen Generations, Keila Mayberry
Searching For Justice For Australia’S Stolen Generations, Keila Mayberry
Chicago Journal of International Law
Until the early 1970s, Australian federal and state government agencies forcibly removed tens of thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and placed them up for adoption or in group homes and church missions. These children are known as the “Stolen Generations.” Domestic remedies have proven insufficient in securing justice for the Stolen Generations and international adjudication may be a viable alternative. This Comment examines whether Australia may be haled before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for violations of the Genocide Convention for its Stolen Generations policies. Australia’s policies likely constituted a violation of Article …

Unhrc Resolution 26/9: Is A New International “Red Card” Enough To Keep Fifa And Others Accountable?, Griffin A. Clark
Chicago Journal of International Law
The lead-up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar has generated significant controversy due to the host country’s exploitative labor system and sub-standard human rights record. While FIFA has not remained completely insulated from criticism for its involvement, the sport’s principal governing body has avoided all serious threats of liability for its connection to human rights violations associated with the 2022 World Cup. This immunity largely stems from limitations on domestic courts in adjudicating domestic corporations’ foreign business activities. Yet, the ongoing development of a new treaty under the U.N. offers a different approach to liability for transnational business …
Understanding Water Quality, Vegetation Establishment, And Stakeholder Success For The Fargo Project: A Multi-Stakeholder Led Community-Based Green Infrastructure Project., Jesse Riley
Natural Resources Management
The Fargo Project is a dry detention basin that holds stormwater drained from urbanized and impervious areas that serves as a component of a greater stormwater infrastructure network. The project goals were to design a multi-use green infrastructure area that would invite neighboring residents into the basin. From its conception, the project has relied on partnerships between stakeholders. A survey was developed and deployed to all stakeholder groups that participated in the community-based project to access stakeholder success. The Fargo Project was viewed as a success by most stakeholders. Project partners felt that the basin’s main goal was to serve …
Improving North Dakota's Arboreta: Utilizing Living Museums To Their Greatest Capacity, Stephen Lee Ahrenholz
Improving North Dakota's Arboreta: Utilizing Living Museums To Their Greatest Capacity, Stephen Lee Ahrenholz
Natural Resources Management
North Dakota has roughly 20 arboreta, though many of them are in decline. NDSU Extension developed an arboretum improvement project that included field visits, site inventories, and educational programming. North Dakota’s arboreta are a diverse group with over 70 genera and more than 500 tree and shrub species represented. Soil Conservation District (SCD) arboreta have an average of 31 species per arboretum while non-SCD arboreta average about 70. Labeling methods and accuracy, condition, and maintenance varied greatly. We conducted four educational workshops for arboretum managers, but attendance was relatively low: only 21 individuals attended. Attendees include SCD employees, Extension agents, …
The Impacts Of Exotic Species On Native Bee Communities And Interactions In Novel Northern Great Plains Grasslands, C. K. Pei
Natural Resources Management
Human alterations to landscapes impose novel conditions on native plant and animal species. Exotic plants are among these changes and are presently common and prevalent across Northern Great Plains (NGP) grasslands. Their introductions alter plant communities and influence the wildlife species that rely on the resources provided by plant communities. Exotic plants displace native plant species, but we do not understand how or if some exotic plants can provide resources to pollinating insects requiring floral resources. Considering the spread of exotic plants and the important ecological services bees provide, it is important to understand how native bees value and interact …

Plant Blindness Represents The Loss Of Generational Knowledge And Cultural Identity, Stacie Blue
Natural Resources Management
Elders from the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians (TMBCI) who have gathered plants within the region have seen the plant numbers reduced and species of plants disappear. Their statements of concern for the plants and their hope for increased plant diversity led to the development of the current research study. Increasing plant knowledge is vital to rebuilding and maintaining the diversity of vegetation within the forest, grassland, and wetland habitats. The present study used an online survey to assess citizens’ ability to identify plants that belong in wetland, grassland, and forest habitats in the area; names of plants; learn …

We present the first fully analytic evaluation of the transition amplitude for the scattering of a massless into a massive pair of fermions at the two-loop level in quantum electrodynamics. Our result is an essential ingredient for the determination of the electromagnetic coupling within scattering reactions, beyond the currently known accuracy, which has a crucial impact on the evaluation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. It will allow, in particular, for a precise determination of the leading hadronic contribution to the (g − 2)μ in the MUonE experiment at CERN, and therefore can be used to …

Implementing Adult Waist Circumference Measurements In Primary Care, Terryl Lynn Johnson
Implementing Adult Waist Circumference Measurements In Primary Care, Terryl Lynn Johnson
Nursing
Overweight and obesity negatively affect multiple acute and chronic disease conditions (USDHHS & ODPHP, n.d.). Two of the most valid and reliable measurements of overweight and obesity are body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) (NHLBI, n.d.). Despite evidence that waist circumference measurement (WCM) can aid in stratifying risk, the predominant measurement of obesity is BMI alone (Ross et al., 2020). The purpose of the practice improvement project involved creating a workflow to measure adult WC at wellness visits, increase the frequency of adult WCM, and documentation of WCM in the electronic health record (EHR). The project included increasing …
Influenza Vaccination Rates In Primary Care, Kara Kreft
Influenza Vaccination Rates In Primary Care, Kara Kreft
Nursing
Influenza is a common and highly contagious upper respiratory illness that affects an average of 8% of Americans each season. The flu was associated with 18 million medical visits, 400,000 hospitalizations, and 22,000 deaths during the 2019-2020 flu season in the United States (US). The best protection from the flu is to receive an annual vaccination. However, only 56.5% of North Dakotans received a flu vaccine for the 2019-2020 season, well below the Healthy People 2030 goal of 70%. Suboptimal vaccination rates, along with increasing vaccine hesitancy and misinformation associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, make efforts in improving vaccine uptake …

Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Knowledge, Beliefs, Attitudes, And Barriers: An Educational Intervention For Male College Students To Increase Knowledge, Vaccine Intent, And Vaccine Uptake, Shannon Marie Thompson
Nursing
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. When the virus does not spontaneously resolve, HPV infections can develop into papillomas or cancers (CDC, 2020d). While interventions promoting the HPV vaccine as a means to prevent cervical cancer have been successful, HPV-related cancer in men has been commonly overlooked. Current data shows low rates of HPV immunization for young adult males in North Dakota (NDIIS, 2020). To address this low uptake, an intervention was designed to address the following clinical question: In college males ages 18 to 26, will the provision of education regarding …

Machine Learning Approaches To Improve Prediction In Health Care, Sadaf Kabir
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The availability of data and advanced data analysis tools in the health care domain provide great opportunities for the discovery of unknown or hidden patterns in clinical data. However, medical data is often incomplete and has poor quality, e.g., it contains missing values or too many unnecessary features. Majority of these issues are induced by uncertainty in clinical trials and examinations, such as human error, patients’ withdrawal during studies, malfunctioning of data collection equipment, and are generally inevitable. Properly addressing these issues can lead to the development of precise predictive models and consequently more reliable clinical decision making. Accurate predictive …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Adverse drug events represent a key challenge in public health, especially with respect to drug safety profiling and drug surveillance. Drug-drug interactions represent one of the most popular types of adverse drug events. Most computational approaches to this problem have used different types of drug-related information utilizing different types of machine learning algorithms to predict potential interactions between drugs. In this work, our focus is on the use of genetic information about the drugs, in particular, the protein sequence and protein structure of drug protein targets to predict potential interactions between drugs. We collected information on drug-drug interactions (DDIs) from …
Stormwater Runoff Response Under Changing Climate And Land Uses Across Gradients Of Inland And Coastal Urban-Natural Basin, Mahmood Khan
Stormwater Runoff Response Under Changing Climate And Land Uses Across Gradients Of Inland And Coastal Urban-Natural Basin, Mahmood Khan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Climatic variability has caused significant shifts in the magnitude, frequency and spatiotemporal distribution of precipitation, generating excessive runoff that leads to frequent occurrences of extreme hydrologic events such as the pluvial (rainfall accumulation) and fluvial (riverine) floods. The conversion of natural areas into urban lands is further exacerbating the rainfall accumulation by increasing surface imperviousness that hinders infiltration of water into the soil. This dissertation predicts and characterizes potential shifts in the future annual stormwater runoff
volumes and runoff extremes under the standalone and coupled changes in climate and land use across inland and coastal urban-natural settings. The research was …
